    Highly contemplated between the M2 MBA and 14" MBP. Settled on the Macbook Air M2, with 10 core gpu / 16GB Ram / 512GB SSD. Difference is around €200-250. For me it was simple, I wanted a laptop, in my opinion the MBA is more of a laptop than the pro. Laptop provides mobile computing, portability. The air is just better at that. Do i want the better performance of the MBP? Yes. Do i need it? No. But do i need a laptop? Yes. Simple as that.

      I'm in the same position. I'm looking for a new laptop for school in September and after upgrading the SSD and ram the price is very similar to the MBP 14. On one side I just need a simple laptop for school but I also would like a better screen and 120hz.

    I had the midnight m2 air 512/16gb 8cpu 10gpu on order. Then I saw videos of the m2 air vs M1 pro 14 and saw the better HDR and 120hz screen, better performance, better cooling and better speakers, more ports, so I cancelled my m2 air. I should mention I got $300 off the retail price or the M1 pro 14. I'm in Australia. I don't regret my change in choice. I went into the Apple store and tried both, saw the screen difference and tested both the speakers with the same song. Best decision I made was to swap to the M1 pro 14

    Was about to purchase MBA M2 16/512. But when got at the same store a new MBP 14 16/512 for the same price as the MBA M2, I decided on the MBP: better laptop overall for my current and future needs but in "portability"... (damn! MBA M2 is still quite tempting! ) However, I can comfortably live with the MBP extra 0.8 lbs (227 g) and 43 mm height.

After watching some of your videos I decided to order the base model with 1TB in SILVER. Now I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase...thank you. Love the Silver and extra memory. My last Apple laptop computer purchase was in 2012 the 15" Mid-2012 MBP unibody spec'ed out with the Matte screen, I hate to retire her 😞she is in mint condition. Agree. I’m assuming Apple trying to capitalize on early hype profits. Have had the 14” since November and there is absolutely no way the Air should be priced as is. If the only thing someone desires is less weight, then wait to buy this when the hype price comes down.

    I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought the m1 14 pro. I was going to get the Air 512gb but with the Pro Display and the SD card slot it just makes it more convenient if I ever want to edit photos on the go.
    Plus - the 14” display just seems like a pleasure to work on photoshop rather than the 13.6” air
    Best Buy has the m1 14 for 1599. Just made sense as I want to keep this machine for years to come. 1499 for 512gb m1 (or 1399 at Apple with education discount)
    It was a tough choice 😅

    Hey Dion!
    I just bought a MBP 14” base model from Best Buy since they have it currently sitting at $400 off! (Huge deal from what I gather)
    It’s just a personal laptop investment that I’ll use to make music, edit videos, learning to code, etc.
    Even with all of this - I’ve still been thinkin of maybe “downgrading” to the M2 air!
    With the reduction in price it seemed like a great deal, but curious to see what you think for someone like me!

    • @DionMedia
      @DionMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Austin, that is a huge deal. So if I understand well you just bought the MBP14” at a great price, but you are still considering switching it for the M2air? Well, if portability is your main concern the Air is the better option, but looking at your (other) requirements I would lean towards the MBP, especially if you want to learn to code (what in the longer run might require more power). Just my thoughts, let me know what you decide

      Have had the 14” pro since November upgraded the CPU and GPU to the next tier and put in 32 ram. I’m a print and graphics professional and have Photoshop and Illustrator open 24/7 with big files…constantly have at least 10 tabs running in the background and have never had any slowdown. Considering the performance of these things, I would t expect a HUGE bump in performance in next chip. I mean, there really is no reason. Even guys using these things and pushing them hard, still have the best laptops they e ever had. I mean, a laptop can only be maximized so far, if the software isn’t also in synch….

Their 8 RAM take you much farther than 8 RAM on not IOS devices. So for photoshop it should be, in my experience, more than adequate. Just upgrade your storage. If you still wish to upgrade RAM as well, then go the M1 Pro. Coming back to your question, I think you should be fine with your specs, with many years to come!

    Hello Dion, i'm going to uni in software engineering. I'm planning on running vscode on mac. When I went to the apple store, they told me the M2 Macbook Air would overheat while using vscode because of something called bootcamp (a new feature) making windows run at the same time as mac. Is this information true? I'm not sure on what to chose because the difference in price is significative. I'd really appreciate an answer! Thanks.

    Curious, you mention the silent performance of the M2 Air, so do you imply that the 14 in can get loud? Even when opening a ton of tabs or watching videos?

    • @DionMedia
      @DionMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Sebastian, that is a great question! Thanks for bringing that up. The fan noise on the M1 Pro 14" is only minimal. Virtually not audible during day to day use (even with many tabs open), only when doing heavier tasks like editing in Final Cut Pro can you hear them kick on. But even then the noise is not an issue, compared to previous MacBook pros that can almost levitate off the table ;) However, while the fans on the M1 Pro 14" are quiet, only the M2 Air is silent. Hope that can help :)

I came from a very much Mac oriented University, so basically had no choice (if I had wanted). When you choose Apple either of the two models would be fine; assuming price plays a role (normally it does :) ) I would go for the M2 Air, also because of its superior battery life

    Dion, have you tried Blender rendering/editing benchmark on these two machines?
    I am in a kind of dilemma because, speccing both machines the MacBook Air M2 (10-core CPU) and the 14" MacBook Pro M1 Pro (base model 8-core CPU) with the same memory and SSD options (512GB SSD and 16GB Memory) the price difference is extremely close (like, between USD 300-420 in our country.)
    The MBA M2 is tempting due to its faster single core CPU performance vs. base model M1 Pro chip MBP, more portability, and in some tests, the 10-core M2 even beats the binned 8-core M1 Pro, but the MBP has better features than the Air M2 (skipping the 13" MacBook "Pro" because it shouldn't exist tbh.)

    Good informative video. I also like how it was edited. A small piece of feed back though: maybe you can establish a short name for each item you’ll be comparing at the beginning of the video. When you hear the phrase “m2 MacBook air … M1 Pro MacBook Pro” almost every other sentence, it gets very repetitive. Or maybe show graphs to make more comparisons at once without verbalizing the models for each. I don’t know, just a thought. Good video nonetheless.

    Hi Dion! I'm thinking of buying the base model of the 14" M1 Pro, which right now costs €1,992 on Amazon, because if I maximize this model with 1Tb (which I really don't need, because I use an external SSD) and 32Gb of RAM, it would go up from Price up to €3,200. Do you think the base model would serve me for 3/4 years or is it worth the investment to maximize it? Mostly I would use Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma and Safari with multiple tabs on a daily basis, and occasionally edit photos in Capture One and videos in Final Cut or Premiere. Thanks!

Air M2 catches my attention for the design, but at the moment when I configure it to my liking, the price is similar or higher than the base M1 Pro. Thanks for the information!

    I’m an IT student and I do some tensorflow or pytorch python codes.
    And the second question is, is it better to upgrade the ram or ssd, due to its slower ssd on the base model?
    But something that bothers me is the price of MacBook air m2 with 16gb of ram and 512gb of ssd, I could buy a m1 air base model + an iPad air m1 for that pricing.
    Which one should I go with?
    The upgraded m2 air

      Hi, this is multi facetted question. I will break it down in parts. I would suggest upgrade storage over RAM, as with Apple’s efficiency 8GB of RAM will get you a very long way.
