STOP WASTING MONEY?! M2 MacBook Air vs M2 MacBook Pro

  • Should you buy the M2 MacBook Air or the M2 MacBook Pro? Apple sort of made a mess with the M2 MacBook Pro and M2 the MacBook Air. You see - just like with the previous models, we have 2 very capable laptops. But when we look at pricing and features - I’m not sure the MacBook Pro makes a whole lotta sense - with maybe two exceptions. Now, I bought all of these laptops with my own money and I’m going to help you get more by paying less.
Both laptops start out with 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage. The M2 MacBook Air sells for $1200, and the M2 MacBook Pro sells for $1300 - so we’re looking at a $100 difference - which is not much separation.
With the M1 model, there was a $300 difference between the two base models, and the more expensive MacBook Pro had some better features, but this year it’s not that simple.
So let’s take a look at both of these from the perspective of an everyday user and I’ll also add some context for more demanding users.

Have been watching so many vid's on new Mi equipment. Getting way to saturated in my head. So I did a dump, figured out how I wanted to live with a new machine, then which one ( believe me it gets confusing). In the end I bought more than I need, but want the screen size, So the MacBook Pro 16" was my choice. Because the 14" was to small, and, Mac mini doesn't yet support the M1pro chip. So today I say thanks for all your help and I very satisfied with the uptick in cost. Best of all worlds, as you always say..."buy it nice or buy it twice" ,lol

I work in show production and I use my MBP for playback video, as a very sophisticated media player. In my case, the MBP 12" is the machine to go, but for regular use, it would be the air. I mean, I need to stream 4 HD videos from the laptop and the pro can do that. The air will get hot. And that is the only reason to get a pro, other than that it makes no sense at all. As a pro machine, it should have SD ports and such.

Why the hell did they get rid of the speaker grille in the m2 mba? it was part of the aesthetic and it could have helped with the cooling. They should have placed the speaker grille horizontally above the keyboard and also gotten rid of the sides to make the keyboard the edges like they did on the 12” macbook and the dell xps 13. For me, it comes down to the screen. I don’t strictly need the power of the Pro to edit photos professionally, but the screen is sooo much nicer. The Air only has 500 nits of brightness (100 nits less than even my iPad Pro) and no HDR. The 14 and 16” Pro have up to 1600(!!!) nits of brightness, and full HDR capabilities. I don’t need the 120Hz refresh rate of the Pro, but it’s nice. If the Air’s screen was even 70% the quality of the 14/16” Pro’s, I’d get that one and be very happy to save a bunch of money.

I live in Mexico and the difference between the Air and Pro entry models aren’t as tight as they are in the US ($5,000 MXN which are around $250 USD). I decided to get the 512GB Air (M3 I suppose) and work with it for between 6 and 8 months and then sell it to get a 14’’ Pro.

Your video is greatly appreciated regarding your point that we don't run benchmark software all day long or export 8k video. I think the pundits on TH-cam have a bad habit of posting sensationalized headlines about how terrible a new product is based off of benchmarks alone. The M2 Air is fantastic and although I wish Apple would have more storage on the entry model, I also realize that they (Apple) have historically always offered relatively small amounts on entry models for storage with the idea of pushing you to upgrade. How else do you become a two trillion dollar company I suppose.

@@billiamnotbob I got my M1 Air around a year ago. B&H Photo had crazy sale on the gold 8 core CPU/GPU, 8 RAM and 512 SSD and ended paying like $1099. Like 2 weeks later they lowered the price even more and provided a credit. For the time being, I’m ok with it. If in the near future I need more performance, I might consider a refurbished M1 Air with 16 RAM.

m1 air has the very similair performance to the m2 air.
the m2 air is more powerful for the first 20 mins of sustained load.
after 30 mins, the performance equalises.
even the 10 core GPU performs worse than the 8 core GPU on the m2 air, because of the thermal throttling.

I got the M2 Pro after debating quite awhile, ultimately went with the m2 Pro because it was about 180 dollars cheaper surprisingly than the M2 air. The m2 came with 512 gb of ssd whilst the air m2 had 256. there was the m1 air available at 650 dollars but had to be pre ordered with a 2 week estimated wait time and I needed the laptop urgently. something I noted which was getting overlooked by a lot of people was that the pro comes with a fan while the air does not, this is important because where I'm from temperatures outside are hot.
Though I do wish the pro came with that 1080p camera and better screen

    Hey everyone!!
I need help deciding on whether to go for the MBP m2 or the MBA m2.
I looking for something as I am a student. I wanted a laptop that was durable and capable of performing tasks.
I am new to the MB scene and wasn’t too sure on what decision to make, as I don’t want to regret the purchase.
I love the look of the MBA although also like the features the MBP provides.

I would like to switch from windows to Mac but the price puts me off and also that some my programs I have on windows will not work on Apple.
Also another thing lack of ports and a sd card reader annoys me that you got to buy further adapters to use these. It’s a further more expense when the Mac book air is already expensive to buy.

For a software developer who will need that continuous sustained speeds when coding, simulating, etc., having a fan in the system is a no brainer. Also, if budget is tight, going with the 13’ compared instead of the 14’ mcbk pro can surely save a lot of cash. That’s just my opinion.

Heyyy, I am using a 2014 macbook air with 4 gb ram and 128 gb… And I want to upgrade. I’m a nursing student so I use my computer for typing, research, entertainment and browsing… I don’t think buying the MBP M1 pro is worth it because of the price. But I am considering the MBP M2 because of the cooling system and I don’t really mind the older design or the 720p camera as it is going to be better than what I am used to anyway. I want performance over looks. On the other hand, the MBA M2 seems like a good option. But i tend to open multiple tabs at the same time and I have read that it gets hot and slower with tabs open. It scares me. What do you think ?

I mainly work on multiple office applications at the same time, switching back and forth and writing large documents. I’m working from and away from home and need a fairly mobile device. I still don't know which would be suitable for my use :( I'm currently using the macbook air 13" (2018). The only reason I want to upgrade is that my current macbook air heats up pretty quickly and is very loud. I need it for uni and having a lot of assignments, I always have a lot of tabs and PDFs open while working. But that overheats it a lot and it starts working slower (and louder...sounds like an airplane...), which is pretty annoying. So, which of the M2 would be suitable to avoid that problem?

Basic rule of thumb for all computers: never buy one with 256gb of storage. Especially when that storage is not upgradable.
After you install a few apps, have a few photos and a couple videos - your computer is full. Performance starts sagging, you’re buying expensive SSDs to increase your space, you’ve got dongles, dongles and cords - you’re life is a fucking mess and you’ve spent more money accommodating a stupid size of hard drive than just buying a proper one outright.
512gb is the minimum storage you need. Absolute minimum.
1TB is optimal and 2 is absolute cake.
      Never. Buy. 256GB hard drives.
