Apple and many other companies figured out a long time ago that allowing their customers to easily distinguish between new and old products is a bad idea because then they can't trick people into emptying their old stock.

Depends on the product. For the ones they want you to upgrade every year and for the "New generations" they want to make it as diffrent as posibile so there is that brag factor.

Tim Cook is one of the best manufacturing managers in the business. That’s why Apple has the lowest time-to-customer in the industry. Since Apple doesn't have much stock, the lockdown in China caused Apple’s recent lead time to increase dramatically.
So I don't think they are selling the old model just for stock clearance.
(Sorry for my poor English lol)

Actually, I think they does, why do you think they always launch newer iPhones with similar design but new colors?
You could argue because it give people more choices, but I personally thinks it just so people could distinguish the old ones and new ones.

    • @Gilamath.
      @Gilamath. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@CYKuo-yl9lg I tend to agree. That said, I think the reason for the M2 MBP is not stock clearance, but manufacturing inertia. Apple has a lot of manufacturers who can make the current MBP chassis and parts
Apple was able to get this device to customers much faster than the all-new M2 MBA, and are also likely selling the M2 chip at an increased profit margin with the MBP versus the M2 MBA. The current low-end MBP will likely be discontinued once initial costs of changing the MBA design have been paid off and supply lines free up a bit. The M1 MBA will also likely stick around for about the same time. That said, this is informed guessing at best, and Apple has surprised me before

    I mean, real reason:
M2 13" has a fan and longer battery life.
I have the M1 Pro 13", but these are my thoughts:
    1) I can take it on the road and don't have to charge it as soon as I would any other laptop (apart from the M2 13").
    2) I can play games on my lap, using a custom, but quiet, fan setting, and it never gets warm to the touch.
    3) The only function keys I ever use are brightness and sound, both of which work great on the touchbar.
    4) You can make use of the extra GPU power on the M1 and M2 Pro 13", whereas you cannot on the Air.
I also have an M1 Max 16", which I somewhat regret purchasing. Excellent machine, but I tend to use my MSI GE67HX for similar workloads.
I honestly think every mainstream reviewer missed the mark on the M2 Pro 13. I find it almost flawless. I even like the rounded shape when its on my lap, and the black bezels when consuming media.

A lot of ways to think about this, I see the reason that people still prefer M2 pro is because of the fans and touch bar, even you dont recognize M1 or M2 from the chassis, but you can definitely tell it is a 13 pro. People also purchasing 13pro because it is special, classic chassis, and they honestly dont care about 720p webcam, however the screen revolution is already awesome and very stable performance in a long run, most of people wouldnt even use macbooks as a speaker anyway, but its sound quality is fantastic, where 14 pro is even better, but Im pretty sure that nobody choose 13pro mainly considering the sound quality. For M1 13pro users, definitely not worth for the upgrade to M2 13pro, but for first Macbook users like me, Id for sure go with the M2 13pro for its uniqueness, and the classic thick chassis with fans is the way to go for long term usage, and I believe that was the main reason Apple had courage to use the same M1 13pro chassis for the M2.

I used to work in a staples back in high school and apple has for a long time made it incredibly difficult for anyone to distinguish which model is which. This is particularly annoying if you're a store that carries multiple models.
We had a few people come back to the store and return iPad models specifically for this reason lol---one of our team members handed them over the wrong year's iPad without knowing the difference.
    EDIT:
I know that they've always included model numbers on the back of the packaging, but finding which model is which is surprisingly difficult. It's also not always in a standardized location, so it's very confusing. Really they should just work more on their packaging lol. It got so bad to the point that our electronics manager had to spend an afternoon developing an organization system for our backroom stock of them, and basically personally took over making sure they were in the right places so people would avoid handing out the wrong models.

-Fully legitimised the decision to use old hardware
-Allowed them to keep it in the lineup for a quadrillion years if needed, without looking tacky
-Made sense relative to the iPhone naming scheme
-Cleverly and side-winkishly made reference to the Macintosh II/Macintosh SE market positioning. Almost too cleverly assuming the below dot point.
-Been expected to sell for at LEAST 30% less... Hell, potentially making the Air look like the bad value option in comparison.

What Apple has in fact done is rather than run with the M1 (first version of Apple Silicon) for another year whilst they wait for 3nm, they have improved what did not work as well on their first go. Why people would complain about this or not want a much improved version seems almost agenda-driven? That being said, I just bought an M2 MacBook Pro, yes the Touch Bar for me makes a huge difference, the 0.3 screen difference from the m2 air was not a deal breaker as its mostly use to relocate the app menu on the top. M2 Air is thinner but I find the Touch Bar quite useful and to be was a deal breaker, the cooling system is a littler better when playing games or compigin vids. I had the option to purchase the base 14' but I severely disliked the squared design, the thickness and weight were also drawbacks as I travel constantly and the extra space taken and extra weight were an inconvenience. What was the point of comparing microphones, webcams and speakers in 2 essentially identical laptops? It has a faster processor. That is basically the only difference. And they are still selling this product for 2 reasons.
    1. Because people still want them.
    2. Because they have parts to use up.
I don’t know why Apple should get a hard time for making a computer that people want. Yes sure, people more technically literate would always go for either the air or the 14” Pro, but I know a million students/parents/grandparents who literally couldn’t care and want to buy a Pro because of the name and the history of MacBook Pro’s being great. I imagine that 90% of people buying these M2 Pros had a Pro of an older generation before.

The whole model number thing doesn’t make any sense. The venerable A1278 (the non-Retina 13’’ MacBook Pro) never changed its model number throughout its insane 7-year-long production run but still underwent *significant* internal changes, to the point that the chassis are not all interchangeable and many components, such as SATA cables, aren’t, either, owing to subtle logic board layout rearrangements. You can only identify a Mac model generation by looking at its ID, i.e, the “MacBookProX,X” string, or at its SKU code on the box.
And this can actually be beneficial for procurement of the parts that *are* indeed interchangeable, and for organizing repair guides and whatnot. It’s much easier to keep track of the exceptions and order machines by year of release, than to keep track of a profusion of different model numbers. I speak from experience, as trying to buy hinges and a display back for an ASUS was an absolute nightmare, as they’d have different model numbers even based on region, just because they had a different keyboard, whereas an A1278 was *always* an A1278 for stuff such as trackpads, MagSafe connectors, fans, bottom covers, hinge covers, batteries (or at least there were just two models and are, IIRC, interchangeable), etc.

In fact configured the same way, they cost the same across the board. You get faster charging, newer design, larger screen, better camera and guess what you can charge it and still have two working ports. Not the case for the pro. Pro has only two advantages: cooling and battery. If you need sustained better performance where you will significantly benefit from more power, get the 14 inch. By the time you spec the 13 inch to be a decent spec with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD or above the gap is 300 at MSRP. The aesthetic of a device doesn't have to be redone with every release if it's abilities, both functional and aesthetic, were nailed the first time. What I'm saying is, our society seems to think that in order for something to be new and improved in the inside, it's has to look differently on the outside as well. Function ≠ cosmetics but I do understand where each are important. I can't recall the exact name for this concept, but the idea is perceived as cosmetic obsolescence.

I have a (14”) MacBook Pro and I don’t think I’ll need to upgrade again until m5 or 6, definitely not every year. I mainly use it for music production and it barely can be arsed to break a sweat at almost anything I throw at it, including some relatively heavy photoshop and da Vinci stuff. I still haven’t heard its fans lol. I’m not sure why you’d need an m2 pro if you already have an m1 pro - what is it pushing up against from a performance perspective?

Apple should make the MacBook thicker for louder thicker fans and thicker heat pipes to more push more heat out. Give the m2 a redesigned taller slim heat sink give it a bezel less screen 5K standard all models.
The base models should have these specs
Before any upgrades with retaining the same price currently.
16GB memory 512Gb SSD 5K bezel less monitor for all standard models. Starting price 1299. That would be fair 🍏 🍏.

Also I don't get the "but my function keys" argument everyone seems to use. Like, does nobody realize that pressing the "fn" key in the bottom left turns the touch bar into function keys? Or that there's a toggle in the settings to make it show function keys by default, and have the "fn" key show the regular touch bar controls? Similar to how most computers with actual function keys also map them to brightness, volume, media controls, etc. with the "fn" key.
I love my function keys as well but it's not like they're missing or anything, they're just in touch screen form (which allows for a wider range of functionality like offering a volume/brightness slider instead of up/down buttons). The biggest problem with the touch bar is that it was never supported. They introduced it then never bothered to improve upon it or expand its functionality/customizability aside from shrinking it to fit the escape key back in.

  • @benlu

I think the whole reason if the M2 MacBook Pro (I’ma call it M2 pro) was released was to essentially get rid of it once and for all, given the fact that the prices have risen the gap between the M1 pro chip models and the base air (M2) is a lot closer now, and for quite some time the M2 pro based laptops were starting to make less and less sense.
I think they intentionally (and hopefully) kneecapped the performance of the M2 pro to make the other products (M2 air and M1 pro/max) have a greater share and as a result more resources available for fewer products.
I’m praying for the M2 Air to not follow the pro but at this point it’s looking a lot like it

      1. A more expensive M1 pro MacBook Pro
      2. A MacBook Air which is better in the majority of ways currently and is more mainstream.
If you think, the pro dosent make sense unless you are trying to get rid of old parts and cut off a lineup to reduce the spread of parts required.

Even the most 2 recent iPhones use the same processor. Apple is good at maintaining a walled garden ecosystem and quality, but definitely not innovation. • @3X3-n3j
      @3X3-n3j 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@xXlURMOMlXx I’m mainly going to focus on the “kneecapping” bit.
Out of the entire MacBook range the air is the most sold followed by the M1 Pro/Max MacBooks with the M2 pro dead last. They put 1 nand chips in the M2 pro MacBook along with the outdated design to shift off any old dead stock and to reserve the 2 nand Ssds for the Air. Why? Because the air is the most sold. By me saying kneecap I’m saying they intentionally didn’t put the best available components in it. Why? Don’t really know, but one reason could be the fact that there is a global chip shortage and 1 ssd is cheaper than 2 Ssd.
Regarding design, yeah apple isn’t revolutionary in that department at all, but I appreciate when they do change the design because when they do it’s good.
Plus how have other companies innovated in the laptop/phone space recently and have made it a mainstream product. Because from my point of view apple dosent do it because there is a high risk mid reward, and it being a company which is kinda lazy until there is something obvious that’s in their reach (ARM computer chips) they won’t do it.
