I will be streaming the Full game over at www.twitch.tv/primalliquid92 on Thuursday the 28th and Friday the 29th at 7PM GMT come hang out and learn some of the secrets the game has to offer!
Pirilka did the translations. Check out the extended character descriptions in the data shop. In the Demo, many of them are unfinished, and partially copy and pasted from the related class.
@@unnamedunnexist9707 literally all of them? You had male and female variants of classes, sometimes with slight skill difference. Like Ninja and Konuichi
im not, its artificial classes, one of the biggest complaints people had with D6 is a lack of classes and now we still have the lack of them, we just have male/female vareity.
@@Primalliquid92Except the different gendered versions have different inherent abilities, and gendered classes go back all the way to the first game anyway. I guess have Warrior/Valkyrie and Mage/Skull is redundant? Except with different abilities, Warriors are a front line tank that deals more damage when around more enemies, and Valkyrie deal more damage after moving. Entire different abilities that lead to entirely different uses. My mans really calling having more options "artificial" lol
actually, not all of them have different inherent abilities, some are identical. and in terms of different main class evilities, that doesnt make them unique in anyway, those evilities could very easily be put on an actual new class
@@Primalliquid92 Well in that case, why bother having different classes at all? You COULD make a character with any evilities and skills. So I guess we should just have one standard generic class and just have them learn everything from the get go since you CAN give them different abilities later, yeah? A healer that heals twice as much, or heals and cure statuses at the same time are not the same. A mage that does more damage but uses more SP and a mage that deals normal damage for less SP are not the same. There are skills that target specific genders, so having variety based on something that certain skills target adds that extra little touch of tactics. If your argument is that it's "artificial" just because genders, then you have a very, very narrow point of view.
@@Primalliquid92 5 had both genders also, thats where most of it comes from. that said id like to see every class ever in one game as well as all uniques from previous games in one game as dlc
I'm glad there's somebody out there who loves these games as I do. Rented the first one with my cousin back in 03' and was immediately hooked. I'm definitely looking forward to this. Hopefully better story than 6. Keep doing what you do man. Thanks!
@grimreaper5864 my favorite forever will be the first one. The story was so good it was funny and all the characters were great. The battle system was easy and so fun.
The story in 6 was a mix, outside of the frequently reused boss models there were some twists and turns. I especially enjoyed how each party members had an introduction chapter, that lead to a false conclusion then were revisited and each got over their character flaw. Lol if I remember correctly every Disgaea game from 1-4 was loosely based on a fairy tale or popular classical story. It's been a while since I figured that out, but it was Disgaea 4's Wizard of Oz connection that made me notice it.
@@Primalliquid92 they technically billed the male thief as a new unit for some reason in one of those trailers I watched on their channel. Which is weird since I think male thief existed in 1 or 2?
@@Primalliquid92 I think part of the confusion is due to them mislabeling that class. The class name is Evil Eye, but for some reason they labeled it "Catoblepas" which is the Rank 1 name, not the class name.
Thanks for this mechanics focused review. Much more helpful to me than the previous review I watched from another TH-camr who kept going on about how cringe the plot and characters were and barely mentioned game mechanics.
In defence of having the different gendered classes, to a lot of players the generics aren’t just numbers assigned to a unit but they’re characters unto themselves. Even more so if they’ve been using certain characters since the beginning. If someone that’s played since D1 has always had the f healer be a starring role in their party and has named them the same thing in every game then it really had to be a let down when that particular class was just left out of D6 and no amount of “well they’re basically the same as the male healer” is going to help that
i feel like alot of people are missunderstanding my point when it comes to the gender roles, i LIKE having them in. what i DONT like is NIS counting them as SEPERATE classes when they try and advertise "hey look we have all these new classes" when its not
@@Primalliquid92 I do understand that. I feel like that’s NIS sort of acknowledging that them being cut in the previous game was a mistake and letting us know that they’re back in since it was one of the very loud complaints from 6.
@@Primalliquid92 But this kind of details is what we have always had at the franchise. Who's surprised by two almost identical classes being counted differently due to technicisms by this point? Technicisms are the look point of Disgaea as a whole (and ridiculous numbers, of course).
I'm very shocked that the mistranslations are as bad as they are, given that previous games had the evilty descriptions correct. Item reincarnation seems like and annoying added rng-style mechanic to a system that normally didn't need it. Either way great review can't wait to play it!
@Primalliquid92 guess I just never noticed but if i recall stuff like the skill exp evilties was properly displayed as skill exp boosts back in like 5 so I'm shocked they missed it here
A few things that weren't mentioned that I'm curious about... - Are weapon skills back? Or is it like 6 where the skills learned are entirely based on characters? - Can Monsters use weapon-change again? Monster units felt kind of boring without it in 6. Regardless, thanks for the early review.
@@Lucy_the_Pomeranian yep, this 3D graphics dont pass over to us the "sense of speed" , it looks like a ps2 game with high resolution , all stiff and slow
@@____trazluz____9804 The whole move to 3D has been a complete failure. It looks worse, it makes the game look cheaper and more amateurish, all the old charm is gone. And probably the worst: they have set themselves back very far with this change, since they've barred themselves from re-using all of the 2D visuals they already had. That last part I bet is exactly why the last two games did not even come close to 5 and feel like they are lacking content. They have shot themselves with the foot and, for no discernable benefit, forced themselves to re-do so much of their work they've had YEARS to perfect. I am still very confused and perplexed they did not immediately go back to 2D after 6 proved it was not a good idea. It would be really sad if such a stupid thing will be what ultimately sinks this franchise.
@@RiskOfBaer i totally agree i have no idea why they wanted to go 3D it just doesn't work, its basically Castlevania all over again, it just doesn't work in 3D it should stay 2D, 3D in Disagea has no charm, looks flat and lazy
I just finished the demo. I am so glad it went back to the style it is in now. 6's numbers and gameplay was not something i liked. It was the only Disgaea game i didn't complete. This feels like a return to form and i can't wait to play the full game now.
I finished 6 story. The game did not excite me. Dis 7 feels like a return to what it was. At least from the demo. That was enough for me to want the full game
I desperately tried to clear the post-game, but after multiple nights of leaving the game on in the item world auto-battling only to come back to it having wiped at some random place for no reason, I gave up. I'd much rather actually PLAY the post-game rather than let it play itself.
for me 6's number weren't an issue. ridiculous numbers in Disgaea have always been a thing. my problem was the speed at wich you got to the big numbers. from fresh start do one mission and you get multiple levels for it. that is so much NOT how Disgaea has ever been. They seem to steadily get quicker to level from 0 thruought the series, but 6 was too stupid fast, even ignoring the auto gaming aspect
Evil Eye, the minotaur-looking girl monster, is from Disgaea 6. The Bandit is brand new, but it seems like he inherited some of the evilities from 6's Thief, which now reverted back to mostly just stealing like it was in every other game aside from the half-assed stealing + item world hybrid it was 6. So new classes are: Bandit, Maiko, Zombie Lady and Big Eye. And new returning ones are: - Female Fighter (D1), Healer (D1), Gunner (D3), Kunoichi (D2), Professor (D4), Android/Mecha Girl (D4, but with D6 design), Angel (D1), Sorcerer (D3) - Male Archer (D3), Skull/Mage (D1, with D2 and onwards design), Samurai (D2), Armor Knight (D2) - And the monsters Orc (D2), Slumber Cat (D3? But also in D2's newer versions), Ghost (D1), Mushroom (D3), Felynn (D1), Flora Beast (D2) and Rifle Demon (D2). So 4 completely new classes, but 23 new ones in general to debut in 3D. Which is already more than D6's 19 total classes. It's fair to remember that even if a lot of these function similarly to each other, they still need to model, voice (some of them are old, some are new) and create new unique animations for each of them, as this is the first time they're appearing in 3D. EDIT: Ok, to be DOUBLY fair, there was a lot of DLC characters in 6, and, at least for now, not so many new ones in 7. But if they're being sold separately from the main game, I don't think they should be considered as something that took away development time from the actual game.
@@DLOArceus Wasn't it just a male Thief? Cuz Bandit is more focused on treasures and Item World, while Thief has better stealing skills. Technically in D1 Strider was the Item Worlder job.
@@Hambs23 Disgaea 1's thief was male, yes Bandit looks different from male thief, by a pretty large amount really, but functionally they work about the same.
What bummed me out about disgaea 6 was the stats being in the thousands at level 1. I want to BECOME absurdly powerful, not start that way. It feels kind of like they missed the punch line of the joke.
100% agreed. It also had a massively negative impact on story playthroughs. Upgrading weapons gave like 100 more attack which means far less when you already have 3k they didnt do a good job with the % increases to keep the gameplay the same. Shame cuz the story is excellent
Like honestly it was the worst story to do that with too, since it was literally the story about the weakest monster type starting from nothing and building himself up to literally kill a god... meanwhile the zombie with supposedly no strength is stronger than every other protagonist in the series at level 1.
The translations of the status effects IN battle appear to be correct. So if you want to discover what the evilities do you don't have to figure it out by calculation, you can view status effects of a character in battle to see what kind and values they are. Obviously this is less ideal than ... you know ... proper translations but it's at least easier than "equip the evility and try to calculate the difference in exp or class exp or skill exp you get"
As somebody who works in the industry, it kinda baffles me that I am seeing text overrunning its allocated space at 18:21. Such an easy thing to fix with scrolling text boxes... Really disappointed in the lack of general polish for the smaller details.
Thanks for the review Primal. The translation issues have already been fun to sort out in the demo. I hope someone might release a spreadsheet or something similar with what properties and evilties actually affect the stat or the damage. (Hint hint lol) i wouldnt count on the translation fixes since we havent really seen corrections before. But who knows. Appreciate you, your guides got me to a full team of 9999s in the demo. Ready for carnage!
im waiting to hear back from NIS now they have asked me for examples of some issues, so who knows maybe it will happen and yea i do hope for a spreadsheet to be done
Damn I hope they fix these translations, the fact that more people are going to either test items out or look up what they actually do us going to be a pain in the ass
Playing the demo and previous game on switch, I use graphics mode when docked and performance when handheld. There is a noticeable difference on switch.
I mean it could of been upgraded to her wanting to get a game of a specific genre, an actual console game then some side-story or mobile game or just straight up want to rub it in certain previous characters faces, especially Badass Overlord Zetta.@@LetholdusKaspyr
I played the Japanese version on the switch. It's not nearly as smooth as the PC/PS versions, but the portability was nice. I repeated my mistake again this time too as I have spent way too much time on the English demo on the switch too.
I haven't completed the game 100 % meaning ive beaten the storyline but only played up to carnage 14 and i havent seen 2 of my favorite female uniques return 😮😢 it wouldn't constitute as a bad review or dislike of the game in my opinion but the game would definitely loose points lol and those 2 units are Prier and Marjoly 🥰❤️ they are my favs.
No post game character is quite bad to be honest, espescially when you consider they probably don't have that much work to do if they were allready done in disgaea 6
Yea, there are some post game character unlocks. Without spoiling it the last boss joins up with you for example. Characters like Laharl or Valvatorez they lock behind DLC though. That especially hurts for Valvatorez because of his useful evilties.
On the topic of translations/localisation the one thing that's been bothering me the most is that some of the stage names are longer than the text box background. Even though I don't know how their UI is implemented, I would have thought they'd at least have considered text length changes and made the text field multi-line or dynamically size the text. Though being in the software development industry I know how often localisation is treated as an afterthought.
Thanks for the review, I got really disappointed with Disgaea 6 and was going to drop the series altogether, but this review made me get it, complete version and all, and I don't regret a penny. Great work!
I’m enjoying the game however I’m quite upset with no Combo attacks anymore. Meaning stacking close together and then some silly attack with everyone together. Unless that’s somewhere else besides just boosting the power of a move
I'm glad to hear they returned to the earlier days of the franchise. Disgaea 6 was a BIG let down for me. I wish they would bring pirate invasions in the Item World, and chara-world back.
Nice video review.. A word to the Autosave lag you demonstrated: I have played it on PS4 (Hybrid-HDD) and PS5 (NVMe with DRAM Cache) (I just had the chance to buy a PS5, so I continued in PS4 mode on PS5) and I don't have observed that lag at all, I can just walk after a stage and don't get a stutter... (Version 1.0.0) (Yes, I did get an early access for review purposes too.) Also, I about your translation issues. Yesterday came a patch with the note "Fixing translation issues". I wonder if that was addressed.
I'll wait for the complete version, the way they've split dlc characters (Laharl, Etna and Rozalin instead of Flonne) up to make people have to buy multiple packs for the trio they like is a joke tbh. I was literally about to buy the game before i noticed they'd done that.
I think that, now that NISA gave Asagi her own mobile game, they decided to let her recurring meme die with Disgaea 6, so Asagi is gone from Disgaea forever. I mean, now that they have 99 characters from all the other precursors, they have to cut some minor characters and Asagi was just a meme so... :p You also have the description copied from your Final Fantasy stream.
What does increasing the items rarity actually do? Also in this game i was a bit concerned about the power creep not being enough.. i did like +100 levels to an Imperial Seal and the stats hardly changed at all.. but looking at some of your gear it looks to not be a problem at all xD! I'm also SO happy about the auto battler system in this now.. in 6 it felt like you were forced to use it otherwise you were wasting your time but leaving it on overnight and the game beating itself for you completely negates the purpose of a Disgaea game IMO xD
Totally agree. I hated how in 6, you physically HAVE to auto-battle the item world, since you have to do thousands of floors to make an item good enough to beat Baal. Same with leveling, you had to auto-battle for close to an hour just to get to level 99,999,999, every single time you reincarnated.
@@AnaverdGaiden Autobattle, itself, was actually a great quality of life feature to add to the game, grinding is a big part of the game after all. The problem was they keep trying to balance the game with auto-battle in mind, which ultimately negates all the good it does since they keep adding mechanisms to make the autobattle system "balanced" forcing you to use it or get bored during the grind.
@@SherrifOfNottingham My big issue with it in 6 was that the game forces auto-battle. In previous games you did 100 Item World floors then you were done, and could get to max level in one map. Because of the auto-battle, however, it took thousands of floors to max out an item and an hour of leaving your game running to hit max level again. So you're effectively just leaving your console on for dozens of hours while you sit there doing literally nothing. I love auto-battle in 7, though, since you can either play the game normally OR use auto-battle. Adding a currency required to use it was brilliant.
The sad part is 6 was a story about literally starting from a low level zombie that just doesn't quit until he can literally kill a god. A story that was so disconnected from the gameplay of your level 1 characters hitting things for 15k-30k damage, ludo narrative dissonance and all that. Also I hated how the story convinced people to super reincarnate when you had like no mana to pick the better inheritance and stat boost from the reincarnation options.
Probably, "Performance Mode" just sets the framerate to "Unlimited", which means the PS5 uses all it's power to boost the game to 1,000 fps or some nonsense like that xD That issues on PC for a couple of recent games where, when I did not lock the framerate to 60 fps, my PC would almost lift off when being in menus or loading screens, but totally fine during normal gameplay (Baldur's Gate 3 character level up screens, for example).
Is it possible Performance mode is just uncapped framerate for 120hz displays? Remember that the PC version has totally uncapped framerate as an option. The PC version of 6 had some major disk IO bugs at uncapped framerate that caused loads to go _slower_ the higher the framerate. I wonder if they've been fixed in 7.
Although I'm buying it regardless I just want to ask is the Cheat Shop making a return once more as well as the best joke weapon in Disgaea history "Horse ****"?
cheat shop yes, horse weiner no idea, not come across it yet im still missing a couple of joke weapons as you have to speak to NPCs in the item world multiple times for them so RNG is screwing me
No Asagi!? Blasphemy! I do admit her D5 version is the best but I hope they just decide to throw her in as an update or something. She was always a fun random character.
Glad to see they toned down the Auto Battle mechanics. It was useful but I think it resulted in me moving on too quickly. The stories of Disgaea Games aren't normally strong enough on their own to make it without the combat. Making everything auto battle might as well remove combat from the game as an element.
I'm happy to hear this is more like D4 and D5 I wasn't a big fan of D6. Does the autobattle work with just any clear of thestage or do you need to get all rewards first? I'm a little out of practice with Disgaea games so I look forward for some early game tips on classes to use and things to open up early for a smooth start.
I hate the jumbi mode. Once the enmy enters it it just kills the fight and its like im playing a different game. You bassically have to respong by going huge yourself, which pretty mich guarantees the enemy rage gage will fill up and guess what... non-stop back and forth garbage
I am glad they took a few steps back to the older games. 6 was a disappointment, I'm especially glad they restricted auto battle somewhat. Almost felt like 6 was designed around auto battle to me, just afk it, rebirth, afk it again.. Didn't feel nearly as rewarding as the older games did.
Is Magical Discipline really for Class Proficiency? I haven't noticed any number changes when equipping it. I play the Japanese version and that one also says it raises skill proficiency by 50%.
Hate jumbification because the AI uses it constantly. Gone are the days when your party is surrounding a lone boss just barely hanging on and whittling him down. It's 100% going to jumbify across the map forcing you to do the same. Would be a fun gimmick if it were some rare geo panel instead. The characters and story also didn't blow me away, nothing approaching the level of Valvatorez or Axel or Laharl for sure. Also didn't care for how every single skill has an instanced cutscene and how weapons didn't have rare and legendary variant special color skins which would've been very easy to tack on. Aside from that the game is solid. Very much an improvement over 6. They should continue this momentum in 8 bringing back even more old characters and monsters. Particularly the newer Disgaea titles lack the creepy spooky monsters of the old days and are replacing them with moe garbage. Marionette, hellhound, holy beast, manticore. Just some of the great designs of the past which didn't make the cut but catsaber and eryngi did.
it's been many many years since I played a disgaea game and am looking to get one to fill my current SRPG cravings (replayed tactics ogre reborn an ungodly amount of times). would you recommend just going for 7 or getting one of the older entries like 4 or 5 first? any feedback is appreciated.
ignore the haters on 6, alot of arguments for it being bad are just dumb imo, 7 is regarded very widely as being better than 5 aswell. if you're new to the series, get 7 its more friendly and then after that dable in 4-6, going any older than these games and you give up insane quality of life benefits which i would only suggest doing if your a big fan of the series
@@Primalliquid92 The issues with 6 was the fact that it moved to 3D, which forced them to literally remake every single unit in the game making the game only have a fraction of the classes we had in the previous games available, which was a huge departure from 5, which had almost every single class from previous games (apart from some story characters deemed "unpopular" or remade classes like the male thief) While the jarring change to 3D, from a studio that clearly had very little 3D model animation experience, was an obvious thing people pointed out, the lack of classes, the weird decision to artificially inflate stat numbers by multiplying all the starting stats of characters by 1000, and the requirement to use auto-battle to be able to progress at a reasonable rate were the real issues with D6 and why its recommended most people skip the game.
Will you have different/faster/more efficient guides for farming for the full game? Or is it still worth starting in the demo with the methods outlined in your current videos?
Question. Is it possible to change the player character in the lobby, like in past games? I assume yes but I haven't seen anyone do this, so I'm wondering.
As long as the translation issues don't send me on a wild goose chase looking for a material that doesn't exist (Legend of Nayuta) or use a term that already means something else for item descriptions (Labyrinth of Refrain series) I'll be fine
i liked it aswell and i wish it was available in the item world for perfect item creation this time around, the grind is as bad as D6 only now we have to do it manually
Thanks for the review. Just one thing. Evility is not pronounced Evil-tea. It's Ability, except replace "Abil" with "Evil" (yes I know it's such a nitpick 🤣 I otherwise couldn't find anything else to criticize)
are they aware of the translation issues especially related to evilities? This can be a serious issue and create some massive problems... I hope it is fixed for the full release.
I have the means to play the Japanese demo currently Fuji is level 14 on the English demo with 5k+ mana and 10k HL. I’m not far into the Japanese demo.
You should have mentioned if the easy xp or easy mana and lottery shop method still work in the English version in the game ect ect now that you have the full released version. Because they limited on what we could do in the English beta. Can you confirm the advance methods work now and such?
it was never "nesessary" in 6 it just spead it up alot, and yes its the same in 7, you can perfectly max everything without DLC, item maxing is just infinitely faster with Mao though
in the demo, the descriptions of the classes in the Data Shop were really messed up (things like lines from one class being placed halfway into another class's description); is that in the base game as well?
@@Primalliquid92 cool. Thanks. I think the most noticeably wrong description was under the Cleric (female healer) where it says their biggest pet peeve is being mistaken for a girl. Obviously that’s part of the description for the male healer class. From there it became apparent that all the split gendered descriptions were messed up for at least one of each pairing.
I'd like to correct something you said, when you said they're 4 entirely brand new classes the cow one isn't entirely new as it was in diegaea 6 just under a different name. However if they entirely reworked her please do tell me. I remembered her as being a actual red-mangus clone. Edit: thanks for talking about the mistranslations I thought i was dumb since some of the wording was just bad on some of the skills that i even got confused.
I feel like a 7/10 coming from a huge Disgaea fan is a huge indictment against the quality of the game considering this is already a really niche franchise that REALLY appeals to its specific audience. The English translation has usually been spotty at times but having a core feature of your strategy such as evilities so horribly mistranslated is a huge turn off for me. I feel like this might be the first Disgaea game ever that I don't get on release and that is so disheartening. Here is to hoping they take it seriously and address the concerns we have.
in fareness i would NEVER give a game a 10-10 because that would mean its perfect in every single way. and nothing in life is so perfect. Disgaea 7 is an amazingly fun game, but it lost points with me because of item reincarnation being annoying to create perfect gear with and also of all the text errors
@@Primalliquid92 I agree, i don't use the 10 scale specifically for that reason. Even so, what i have always loved about Disgaea is the mechanics and strategy. The idea that different paths of optimization open up as you progress and learn is what made the grind fun to me. It's hard to optimize a strategy when the tooltips literally lie to you.
For me personally, 1, 2, and 4 where peak Disgaea. D2 and 3 where decent, but those 3 games are the ones I couldn’t help but 100% multiple times even. The progression felt meaningful, the levels felt fair. It was all great. Disgaea 5 scared me a bit as everything started to feel more inflated. They added a bunch of extra mechanics, which where somewhat cool, but they also trivialized a bunch of my favorite mechanics. Capturing units and adding them to your party was now a lesser option compared to making a unit from scratch. The main campaign passed by way to quick. They just gave me too many options for grinding too early and I’d pass multiple chapters before feeling challenged even a little again and by then there would be even more options. The fun of slowly catching staticians and other innocents became trivialized with the breeding mechanic. I liked staticians better when the game wasn’t designed around you having them. They where a hard to accrue resource that felt really rewarding. Then the act of leveling became trivialized with all of the other stat upgrade mechanics that max out at a progression point where your maxed out character is too weak to deal with the post game, so now you have to engage in the other mechanics. I’m usually pretty good at breaking the game with the given mechanics, but it took a lot of grinding to get to a point where I could beat all of the post game, even with a ton of OP Evilities. Maybe that’s a skill issue on my part seeing how there are reasonably fast speed runs of the game. Then the final straw was that characters no longer had unique evilities. The only reason to have a unique character is their abilities and there where only like 2 or 3 characters with descent unique, non transferable abilities. Late game isn’t infinite configurability because everyone has to take the same routes and usually by the same means if you want to do it in a almost reasonable amount of time. I was really scared for Disgaea 6 after finishing 5 and when it finally came out I was kind of heartbroken. Like I beat the very first level and shot right up to level 50. I know that doesn’t mean too much, and maybe I could have overlooked it, but the progression was completely different from the other games even accounting for the inflated levels. None of the encounters or levels felt even a little interesting. The only part I found fun in was figuring out the grinding mechanics and even then it felt kind of superficial because it was designed around auto battles which would make the game way to easy if not for the fact that your expected to use auto battles and the rate of grinding is brought down to a crawl because of it. I know you enjoyed it a lot and I’m happy you did, but the Disgaea series has left what I loved about it for the most part and I’m not too hopeful that 7 is gonna make any changes in the direction I like because that would feel like a regression of mechanics where the developers are concerned. You’ve given me a little hope saying it’s designed a little more like the older games, but even then you likened it to 5 which for me was the turning point where everything I liked started to feel meaningless and degraded. Maybe someday I’ll get it for cheap and see how I like it. Thanks for this review. I hope you at least have a great time with the series. And if they ever have a return to form or maybe just do another Makai kingdom or phantom brave without implementing a ton of conventions systems to water them down I can have an awesome time again.
Fully agree with you mate, it seems like Disgaea lost his charm the further the serie went on, Disgaea 6 was the only Disgaea game that I stopped playing, and only after 2 hours! it really felt playing a mobile game, the stats inflation made everything felt meaningless. I miss the simplicity and charm of the first Disgaea, now they have so many mechanics I feel like it would be easier to get a degree than figuring out all the ins and out of every game...
@@AlyssaMcNeil I enjoyed Disgaea 5 gameplay wise, but storywise, yeah it ended with 4. It's the last game that had characters from previous games (now they're only in DLC), last game that had bonus chapters and it barely has any post game. They said in interview that the series is back to it's roots. No it's not. It's empty and soulless.
It appears NIS still has poor standards for optimization and I totally believe you that performance mode makes the fan takeoff like a helicopter, as bizarre as that may sound to most. Disgaea 6 would run better on my laptop after INCREASING the graphical fidelity and turning off the on-the-fly scaling options. Bizarre, man--just bizarre.
On the Switch I notice a difference in the graphics mode. It isn't a huge deal though. It is probably removing some minor GPU bottleneck on the PS5 and thus ramping up the CPU heat or something.
I personally like the male and female versions of many of the classes, because I feel like they all play differently enough from each other to still be pretty useful and still be pretty unique. I will say a complaint I have that I noticed in the demo was that certain male and female versions of the same class would have a unique ability or two, but then have the same ability that they shared with their counterpart, which I will admit, feels a little lazy to me, but not enough for me to throw that big of a fit over it because generally it feels like the skills that are on both are solid skills that did make sense on both. I still think generally overall it’s a positive thing I will admit, though I feel like there are way too many abilities that are just kind of meh and fillers that you’re not really going to use almost ever. Which I get not everything can be like top-tier the best of the best, but a lot of them just feel not that solid on their own to really be worth considering.
Love the vid but one nitpick I have, and many content creators over the years are guilty of it. The word is "Evil-i-ty" not "Evil-ty". Much like "prosperity" isn't pronounced "prosper-ty"
Wait I thought the Catoblepas were from 6? Only they went by the name 'Evil Eye' instead. Or did they update the monster? Anyways, thanks for the review! Probably gonna get this game after waiting a bit, so can't wait to see what you cook up for an ultimate updated guide!
sadly when i see the new D7 all my love from this series was crushed and decimated just gonna pray if D8 will be better or will D7 will be the Last 😢@@Primalliquid92
It isn't perfect. Far from smooth FPS, but playable. I played the full game on the Switch in Japanese and it performed the same as the English demo more or less so you can check it out if you want. Strange that there was a hitching while saving on the PS5 though. I don't remember that on the Switch.
I will be streaming the Full game over at www.twitch.tv/primalliquid92 on Thuursday the 28th and Friday the 29th at 7PM GMT come hang out and learn some of the secrets the game has to offer!
Item world floors going from 100 to 30 is huge for me now that older. I have so little time to grind anything these days 😢
Yeah with the Item reincarnation, reducing it to 30 makes it easier
But is the stat increase with only 30 floors not smaller?
@@arkadiuszjandylewski152 old comment, but you get plenty of levels from floors now, including the stage bonuses
Pirilka did the translations. Check out the extended character descriptions in the data shop. In the Demo, many of them are unfinished, and partially copy and pasted from the related class.
I’m so happy male and female classes are back. I’m truly excited again for Disgaea this is by far my favorite game
what disgaea has gender before ?
@@unnamedunnexist9707 the first, for many classes
I enjoy Etna mode with a mostly all girl squad. As much as you can anyhow
@@unnamedunnexist9707 literally all of them? You had male and female variants of classes, sometimes with slight skill difference. Like Ninja and Konuichi
I'm actually 100% okay with them doing male/female again to pad out the class numbers.
im not, its artificial classes, one of the biggest complaints people had with D6 is a lack of classes and now we still have the lack of them, we just have male/female vareity.
Thanks!
Still prefer d5 but d7 demo was good might buy it
@grimreaper5864 my favorite forever will be the first one. The story was so good it was funny and all the characters were great. The battle system was easy and so fun.
@@ricknewman5874 already played the demo was thinking about buying this game already got d5
I'm afraid I have to make a correction: The Catoblepas monster unit debuted in Disgaea 6.
oh was it? couldnt actually remember it being in 6. thats my mistake then, so only 3 new units this time around
@@Primalliquid92 they technically billed the male thief as a new unit for some reason in one of those trailers I watched on their channel. Which is weird since I think male thief existed in 1 or 2?
@@Primalliquid92 the shy NPC of that class manages the Squad Shop and one of the DLC idol characters is also one.
@@Primalliquid92 I think part of the confusion is due to them mislabeling that class. The class name is Evil Eye, but for some reason they labeled it "Catoblepas" which is the Rank 1 name, not the class name.
@@DiabolicalCountBleck Yeah, Male Thief isn’t so much new as a return of a class that only ever had one game, previously.
Thanks for this mechanics focused review. Much more helpful to me than the previous review I watched from another TH-camr who kept going on about how cringe the plot and characters were and barely mentioned game mechanics.
Disgaea to me is a game about the gameplay not the story, hence why i didnt even touch on it
In defence of having the different gendered classes, to a lot of players the generics aren’t just numbers assigned to a unit but they’re characters unto themselves.
Either way great review can't wait to play it!
oh no even previous games had massive errors with skills and evilities ect, just no where near this many
@Primalliquid92 guess I just never noticed but if i recall stuff like the skill exp evilties was properly displayed as skill exp boosts back in like 5 so I'm shocked they missed it here
@@Dslayer89 Disgaea 5 had many translations errors, there is an excel sheet with the complete list of skills properly translated if you are curious
@@brunocastelo2026 I am definitely curious
A few things that weren't mentioned that I'm curious about...
- Are weapon skills back? Or is it like 6 where the skills learned are entirely based on characters?
- Can Monsters use weapon-change again? Monster units felt kind of boring without it in 6.
Regardless, thanks for the early review.
Weapon skills are back yea but magichange isn't
Weapon skills are back, yes worse than ever with stiff and lazy animations
@@kuchiku-kanzo759 oh for sure that's why I am so pumped It'll be out in 2 days.
Thanks. This channel is always my first stop for Disgaea content!
And new returning ones are:
- Female Fighter (D1), Healer (D1), Gunner (D3), Kunoichi (D2), Professor (D4), Android/Mecha Girl (D4, but with D6 design), Angel (D1), Sorcerer (D3)
- Male Archer (D3), Skull/Mage (D1, with D2 and onwards design), Samurai (D2), Armor Knight (D2)
- And the monsters Orc (D2), Slumber Cat (D3?
Bandit is from Disgaea 1
@@DLOArceus Wasn't it just a male Thief? Cuz Bandit is more focused on treasures and Item World, while Thief has better stealing skills. Technically in D1 Strider was the Item Worlder job.
@@Hambs23 Disgaea 1's thief was male, yes
Bandit looks different from male thief, by a pretty large amount really, but functionally they work about the same.
Dude I just want Overlord Priere to be featured in a game again. Underrated waifu.
Obviously this is less ideal than ... you know ... proper translations but it's at least easier than "equip the evility and try to calculate the difference in exp or class exp or skill exp you get"
yea im hoping eventually somebody creates an actual list

As somebody who works in the industry, it kinda baffles me that I am seeing text overrunning its allocated space at 18:21. Such an easy thing to fix with scrolling text boxes... Really disappointed in the lack of general polish for the smaller details.
Could be a stylistic choice so that all the black marks look the same?
yeh same here man, im waiting until its patched and updated (if it ever is)
Thanks for the review Primal. The translation issues have already been fun to sort out in the demo. I hope someone might release a spreadsheet or something similar with what properties and evilties actually affect the stat or the damage.
No post game character is quite bad to be honest, espescially when you consider they probably don't have that much work to do if they were allready done in disgaea 6
i never said there are no post game characters, i said no post game characters from previous titles
Yea, there are some post game character unlocks. Without spoiling it the last boss joins up with you for example. Characters like Laharl or Valvatorez they lock behind DLC though. That especially hurts for Valvatorez because of his useful evilties.
So its like d5, you unlock characters from the enemy side as post game unlocks?
@@knightmare938 kind of. You get several converted enemies throughout if I recall. It's fairly par for Disgaea games like that.

Japanese companies are mostly notorious for only making the game based on japanese and not caring about the other language releases in the future
Primal can say "I am three orders of magnitude ahead of you" and mean it.
Hi primal. Question.. Is the warlady class as powerful and able to destroy the game by herself the way she did in part 6?
Yep

Well I'm glad there is a demo on switch. The music is great.
(Version 1.0.0) (Yes, I did get an early access for review purposes too.)
Also, I about your translation issues.
Was kinda hoping for a majin / dark Knight return but the eldritch horror and the psychic will work
Yep... Seems they basically don't like the good old edgelord op MALE units, which is a let down for me :(
Dam the barbarian class has never returned after 3 and for whatever reason Nis hasn't rereleased 3. That sucks
acctualy primal , the cow monster femal thing was in a prior game that not a new one it was in 6 or 5 but its definatly not a new one
You guys are God tier game reviewers. Thank you so much for all the hard work and content you guys provide, you've always been trustworthy.
You also have the description copied from your Final Fantasy stream.
I HATED the number inflate of Digaea of 6. I couldn't keep up with things being improved or not. Plus Super Reincarnation was doing some odd shit.
Probably, "Performance Mode" just sets the framerate to "Unlimited", which means the PS5 uses all it's power to boost the game to 1,000 fps or some nonsense like that xD
That issues on PC for a couple of recent games where, when I did not lock the framerate to 60 fps, my PC would almost lift off when being in menus or loading screens, but totally fine during normal gameplay (Baldur's Gate 3 character level up screens, for example).
That mis-translation/mis-labeling issue is pretty huge. Hope the jump on that. Thanks for the review.
You and me both!
@@Primalliquid92 any update on them fixing the translation error?

cheat shop yes, horse weiner no idea, not come across it yet im still missing a couple of joke weapons as you have to speak to NPCs in the item world multiple times for them so RNG is screwing me
Rip Disgaea will always love you
No Asagi!?
Is the Cheat Shop pretty much the same as usual? How soon can it be unlocked? Looking forward to your full release guides!
Yea same as always and chapter 3

I'm happy to hear this is more like D4 and D5 I wasn't a big fan of D6. Does the autobattle work with just any clear of thestage or do you need to get all rewards first?
I'm a little out of practice with Disgaea games so I look forward for some early game tips on classes to use and things to open up early for a smooth start.
just need to clear the stage
asagi must be getting her own game, that can be the only explanation
The last Nippon Ichi game I played was in 2007. That gag is still going? xD
In the demo on switch i get slowdown at the start of enemy turn, like the game micropauses for the ai to think
I hate the jumbi mode. Once the enmy enters it it just kills the fight and its like im playing a different game. You bassically have to respong by going huge yourself, which pretty mich guarantees the enemy rage gage will fill up and guess what... non-stop back and forth garbage
those translations…. now i HAVE too watch primalliquid guides. extra views for my favorite disgaea content creator. something seems fishy here 😂
its all part of the plan!
I am glad they took a few steps back to the older games. 6 was a disappointment, I'm especially glad they restricted auto battle somewhat. Almost felt like 6 was designed around auto battle to me, just afk it, rebirth, afk it again.. Didn't feel nearly as rewarding as the older games did.
im so happy disgea 7 seems to be getting better. hope it plays well on switch
It okay
I'm kind of shocked you forgot that the Evil Eye is from Disgaea 6 when you made so many walkthroughs for that game o.O
generics are just easy to overlook when they're so bad
Sad that auto battle doesn't work on item world, I can't stand the boredom and slowness of item world.
5 is the best recent one out.
@@BestNeekoNA it seems like a lot of people really like 5 and call it their favorite after doing some research
ignore the haters on 6, alot of arguments for it being bad are just dumb imo, 7 is regarded very widely as being better than 5 aswell. if you're new to the series, get 7 its more friendly and then after that dable in 4-6, going any older than these games and you give up insane quality of life benefits which i would only suggest doing if your a big fan of the series
@@Primalliquid92 The issues with 6 was the fact that it moved to 3D, which forced them to literally remake every single unit in the game making the game only have a fraction of the classes we had in the previous games available, which was a huge departure from 5, which had almost every single class from previous games (apart from some story characters deemed "unpopular" or remade classes like the male thief)
While the jarring change to 3D, from a studio that clearly had very little 3D model animation experience, was an obvious thing people pointed out, the lack of classes, the weird decision to artificially inflate stat numbers by multiplying all the starting stats of characters by 1000, and the requirement to use auto-battle to be able to progress at a reasonable rate were the real issues with D6 and why its recommended most people skip the game.
Will you have different/faster/more efficient guides for farming for the full game? Or is it still worth starting in the demo with the methods outlined in your current videos?
Still start in the demo to get you straight into carnage mode, but yes better farm's in the full game for everything
Question. Is it possible to change the player character in the lobby, like in past games? I assume yes but I haven't seen anyone do this, so I'm wondering.
yes
You can do it even on demo, as soon as you unlock the dark assembly
Item World going to 10/20/30 floors instantly makes it at least 9 out of 10 for me |-)
As long as the translation issues don't send me on a wild goose chase looking for a material that doesn't exist (Legend of Nayuta) or use a term that already means something else for item descriptions (Labyrinth of Refrain series) I'll be fine
Am I the only one who likes auto battle haha I turn it on for the boring stuff and play another game so I feel like I’m not wasting my time
i liked it aswell and i wish it was available in the item world for perfect item creation this time around, the grind is as bad as D6 only now we have to do it manually
Thanks for the review. Just one thing. Evility is not pronounced Evil-tea. It's Ability, except replace "Abil" with "Evil" (yes I know it's such a nitpick 🤣 I otherwise couldn't find anything else to criticize)

You should have mentioned if the easy xp or easy mana and lottery shop method still work in the English version in the game ect ect now that you have the full released version. Because they limited on what we could do in the English beta. Can you confirm the advance methods work now and such?
this is a review, not a guide im not going to talk about "tricks" in it. and yes they still work
Is the DLC nesessary for min maxing like 6 was?
it was never "nesessary" in 6 it just spead it up alot, and yes its the same in 7, you can perfectly max everything without DLC, item maxing is just infinitely faster with Mao though
in the demo, the descriptions of the classes in the Data Shop were really messed up (things like lines from one class being placed halfway into another class's description); is that in the base game as well?
i cant say i've actually noticed that in ether the demo or the full game so cant comment, i will take a look next time i fire the console up though
I wanna play these games but I’m not really into strategy rpg games
Excellent very thorough review.
Thank you kindly!
It's empty and soulless.
so what do the gold, silver and bronze trophies do?
It appears NIS still has poor standards for optimization and I totally believe you that performance mode makes the fan takeoff like a helicopter, as bizarre as that may sound to most. Disgaea 6 would run better on my laptop after INCREASING the graphical fidelity and turning off the on-the-fly scaling options. Bizarre, man--just bizarre.
its probably doing something to the FPS in the background, i just couldnt notice any difference personally
Which I get not everything can be like top-tier the best of the best, but a lot of them just feel not that solid on their own to really be worth considering.
where is the ugly? is it okay? is it safe?
Do i learn more weapon skills than 3 in the full game? Seems 3 weapon skills and weapons level 19 is all i can get in the demo
you can yes, last skill unlocks at level 50 for each weapon
@@Primalliquid92 thank
Love the vid but one nitpick I have, and many content creators over the years are guilty of it. The word is "Evil-i-ty" not "Evil-ty". Much like "prosperity" isn't pronounced "prosper-ty"
Evility, like Ability, but more evil.
Wait I thought the Catoblepas were from 6? Only they went by the name 'Evil Eye' instead. Or did they update the monster?
Anyways, thanks for the review! Probably gonna get this game after waiting a bit, so can't wait to see what you cook up for an ultimate updated guide!
yea somebody just corrected me about it, so theres only 3 new classes in D7
sadly when i see the new D7 all my love from this series was crushed and decimated just gonna pray if D8 will be better or will D7 will be the Last 😢@@Primalliquid92
why was it crushed? its still a hugely fun game
yep but it's a redundant of a little upgrade on gameplay and some nerf dunno if they will keep going spiral backward from D2 gameplay@@Primalliquid92
@St.Zoomer I'm sorry, you think every game after D2 was worse gameplay wise?
I mean, it's certainly an opinion, it's just wrong lol
Maybe you did say it when you were talking about that we don't have asagi, but do we have access to overlord priere?
no
No
I wonder how the game performs in Switch
It isn't perfect. Far from smooth FPS, but playable. I played the full game on the Switch in Japanese and it performed the same as the English demo more or less so you can check it out if you want. Strange that there was a hitching while saving on the PS5 though. I don't remember that on the Switch.
I see the Beast Master/Tamer is still missing... RIOT!
Is Sage class in the game or planned to be added in later?
No
Did they update the translation?
Are they going to have a season pass so you can get all the DLC in one bundle?
i dont know
Yes
How/why is there STILL no online co-op!? :'( Seems like such an obvious choice but they're not the only ones making the wrong one . . .
Thanks for this!
