  • Hey All! We continue on through our The Last of Us journey. The climax of Episode 5 was amazing! I can only imagine how much the end of that episode had cost.
    This video is NOT a replacement for the show, and is solely for commentary purposes. Please watch the show.

    The big infected you were asking about is called a "Bloater". From what I have heard (never played the game), Bloaters are people who have been infected for the longest amount of time (up to twenty years). It's almost always a large person, since the person had to be physically big and strong enough to survive long term with the infection without the fungus consuming their body, like the one Joel and Tess found in the basement in episode one. Usually, after so long, a person infected will find a dark, secluded place and let the fungus consume them and they grow into the wall. A bloater will survive and grow an armor like shell and that protects them from gun fire and small arms.

    Bringing sam and henry to the big screen was epic . Making the scavs feel human (kathleen) was epic .. absolutely best show of the year...

    I'm sure you two were watching the post-episode BTS bits (or have since learned more about the show during this eight months) but the guy who played the bearded fella (Kathleen's homie) played Tommy in the game. Gabriel Luna even based his Tommy voice from the video game after he played it.
    And the guy who took the machete to the neck in episode 8 played Joel in the game. And Marlene is Marlene from the game!
    All the cameos.
    You guys should definitely try to find video game comparisons for some of these scenes.
    Just binged your reaction to the whole season tonight.

    That's why I like A HA, The Cure, the way it is played in the carrousel, Depeche Mode (Never Let Me Down Again, sung by Jessica Mazin), etc. Fun, sweet music, yet, scary, foreshadowing. The 80s mean danger.

    • @mikewatchesstuff
      @mikewatchesstuff  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh my god, I didn't even think about that, about the 80's meaning danger... that means they had not just one but two warnings in the mall.

    The problem with being the victim of brutal tyranny means that if/when you gain your freedom/power, you tend to want to inflict brutal tyranny on others.
    They say "turnabout is fairlplay", but you just end up becoming what you hate. A monster.

    Bella Ramsey is British. She has a small part towards the end of Game of Thrones.

    Now that you're finished with the show, I've always thought it was interesting how they used Sam & Henry's story to foreshadow Joel's and Ellie's. Kathleen arguing that maybe Henry should have just let Sam die (since he was already sick and "marked" for death in a way) instead of killing her healthy brother is a direct parallel to the massacre Joel commited at that firefly hospital to save Ellie. If you think about it, Sam had cancer. One drug wasn't gonna be enough, he'd need to undergo constant treatment. That's a lot of people Henry would have to betray. In Joel's case, the cost of ellie's life was a slim chance to save humanity. It's a very human story, albeit a tragic one. How far would you go to keep your loved ones safe? How many families destroyed in the way?

    • @mikewatchesstuff
      @mikewatchesstuff  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You know, I didn't piece that together, the similarities between Sam and Henry, and Ellie and Joel. But yep, you're right

      According to the creators of the game and show, a major theme of this story is the destructive side of love. Love is often looked at as a good thing, but it's also often the cause of violence and destruction. What makes Sam's life more important than Kathleen's brothers? What makes the love Kathleen had for her brother more important than the security of Kansas City? What makes Ellie's life more important than all of the lives that could have been saved? People will often do the most destructive things out of the need to protect those they love.

    Just something I noticed for the first time while watching your reaction. The older guy they meet in the beginning of episode 6 mentions the Wind River reservation. That actor is in a movie called Wind River set in/around that reservation, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you absolutely should.

      Hey thanks for commenting? What is that movie? A drama?

    • @ReadingOne
      @ReadingOne 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup, it’s a drama/thriller! The two main actors are Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner.

      YES!!! I didn’t even think that you would do a reaction to it, I just think that it’s one of those ‘everyone has to see this and learn from the lessons they’re trying to teach us’ movies.

    Thomithy? Sure, why not? :)
    The first ones are runners, like the gramma in episode 1, they look like zombies but are very alive and infected, developing tendrils in their mouths...yak
    Then second, there are stokers, some fungus in their faces but not a complete clicker. They make me sad, like the one kissing Tess, which makes me feel there is still someone inside.
    The third one the clicker,, 2-3 years developing the infection? and they either finally died or continued for decades in the fourth and last kind we know so far in season the bloaters.
    I suspect other mutations will come later.
