"Keith's playing was like standing in front of a Jet Engine"- R Daltry. He knew the Drums were what made the songs work. Gave them something no other band had. Took a while for the WHO to catch on, but once they did they entered the Pantheon of British Classic Rock.
Honestly, my favourite Live performance ever is: The Who Live At The Philadelphia Spectrum 1973 - Drowned (Length: 8:58) But this version is an easy runner up, im so glad this was caught on film.
I believe this was the first show ever to be played at Houston’s Summit. So many classic videos from the ‘70s were filmed there. It was one of the first arenas with modern amenities including video screens and video recorders. Now it’s Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church. smh Not too many Houstonians were happy when that happened, especially considering the tax payers still had many years left to pay it off. At that time The Summit was only 25 years old and in excellent condition. But the Rockets demanded a new arena as part of a downtown revitalization project, and they got the Toyota Center. After The Who, Queen, Kiss, and many other bands filmed some of their most classic concerts at the Summit in the late ‘70s.
I dont believe that to be true. He was very musical and said himself that playing with the Who completely changed his style. I think he just tapped into the energy already there and amplified it times ten. Theres no telling what his playing would have sounded like with another band. Him finding the Who though might well be a match made in heaven...
I’m not sure about that. About this time in the ‘70s drummers started removing the bottom heads from their toms, usually at the request from the soundman. It completely changed the way the drums sounded on recordings. With the bottom drum head removed, the mics were placed into the drum from the bottom. The sound that was captured was more muted. When drummers used double sided heads, the mics were placed on top of the drum, which captured a louder more melodic and resonant sound. Many drummers seemed to sound weaker in the mid -70s, until they began putting heads back on the bottom of their toms in the late 80s and 90s. If you listen closely to the sound of Moon’s toms here compared to the late ‘60s, you’ll notice a huge difference!
8:06 After looking more closely the large tom on the left, from the audiences point of view, has a bottom head. The toms in the middle and to the right have their heads removed. For whatever that’s worth.
You bastard , I just saw your comment . .. guitar dickhead ..everybody else is loving it, you are the only negative turd on this page, you know what I'm heading down to your place of employment and get this cleared up HERE and NOW.....HERE..and........NOW. .
Best live rock band ever! Quadrophenia is a masterpiece!!
Had the original release album when I was 13 , love everything on Quadrophenia
Keith Moon is the best ever no doubt
Watching Keith is like watching a ballet on the drum kit. He even has a hi-hat here.
He had a hi-hat more often than people realized. Sometimes even played it! 😅
Awsome go Keith
Anyway you look at it, Moon dominates The Who...
Once Keith got the row of concert toms of different sizes, his drumming really expanded.
Great version! All on top form !
The Who literally on fire.....
