I was there in '74 and back stage. I was with a bunch of guys from Strand Hotels who were asked to look after the band when they came off. It was amazing and never to be forgotten event!
I was there in 1974 and 1976 it rained all day in 76, I have remained a Who fan since my first sight if them in 1974 as live performers they were just the best.Although I have always felt the Who 's fans were mostly male I am a woman who loves the P Ooo
Keith did use a high-hat on occasion. During 'My Generation Blues' at Pontiac Stadium he adds some perfect high-hat parts as Roger is singing, during the slow first section of the song. Usually he seems to be looking for more cymbal volume, with his crashes and ride. The perfect drummer for the perfect band.
I think that's (partly) the key to the Who's sound... Kenney Jones was very heavy on the hi-hat live, and it gave them a much more rigid sound, whereas Keith had this constant wash of rides and crashes, with a much more fluid sound.
Terrific! Keith Moon has to be the most all out attach rock drummer ever! Jim Henson must of had him in mind when he came up with Muppet's drummer Animal. He and John gave the Who that wild riding bad ass, kick ass knock out kick & punch in the bass & rhythm foundation to frame work for Pete & Roger to open it up with fitting style as a line up. Whenever they wanted to, they easily punched out that hard ass rock attitude, style & sound as well as anyone! And then they could could back with songs that had heart & soul feel. Most of what they wrote is easy to relate to in life for anyone.
I had the good fortune to have been at this concert, absolutely excellent despite the poxy weather. You could see steam rising off the audience when the Who came on stage!!!
Skynrd opened for the Who,The Rest of the Band Couldn't Keep up with the Backing Tracks For Quad, Townshend Went Backstage and Ripped the Backing Tracks To Shreds then played Some Oldies
Moon's playing is particularly amazing on this performance. Try 2:55 to 3:58 throughout which Moon and Entwhistle are the obvious lead instruments covering an incredibly poor guitar break (ostensibly supposed to be the lead instrument throughout this section) from an obviously "tired and emotional" Townshend ( who would later admit that he was so drunk at this gig that he has no memory of playing it! I suppose this makes Moon's playing here doubly amazing as I doubt very much he was any more sober himself). I think that if this amazing rhythm section had been substituted (pun intended) for any other drummer and bassist for this section Townshend would have been left with a lot of egg on his face. (And I'm a guitarist who has Townshend as one of his biggest heroes and not particularly a Moon fanboy at all!). As it is, it's actually a bravura powerhouse of a section; albeit entirely due to the two instruments that should traditionally serve as backing to the lead guitarist throughout. (This isn't unusual for the Who however: one of the striking and unusual things about the band is the fact that distinct from any other band I can think of, the traditional function of each instrument is regularly subverted: bass playing lead, and / or being the core instrument setting and holding down the time; drums following the vocal inflections rather than locking in with the bass or following / setting the rhythm per-se, and a guitarist who's lead sections often as not employ chordal playing as opposed to single note exposition). But I digress! At 3:59 listen how Moon breaks stride almost seamlessly to follow Townshend and Entwhistle out of the lead section into a key change bridge. (Notice Moon's barely looking at Townshend as this change occurs so hasn't been prompted to come out of the solo section for this change by any kind of visual cue. Throughout the freneticism of his playing he is still obviously listening to the two guitarists therefore and not just clobbering away blindly). Again, at 4:13 listen to Moon's playing on the ride but, just as fantastic, watch what he does with the stick in his left hand as he leaves the ride to move over to the left of the kit to prepare for the proceeding section (at about 4:16)..... Stunning. Yes, it's flash, (and would sound crap on record 🙂) but..... still. Cracking!
Oque!?! DROWNED? Talvez essa seja a música de maior octanagem do Quadrophenia. Perfeita em suas primeiras execuções entre 1974/1975. Justificava a potência e a agressividade lendárias do The Who. Uma das minhas favoritas desta banda.
I was singing this in the shower,so had to hear it. It really is a brilliant little ditty ..clever guitar work makes its really work as a three piece .#Pete! Favorite album.
A Melvyn Bragg show called Open House. Interview with Pete where he ripped him, then this and Bell Boy, Baba and Substitute. There may have been more but I was still trying to find my 10 year old jaw at the time. Still the best band this world could ever conceive.
just realized i have beautiful close up glossy photos from roger at this show. one that he signed. they're beautiful and so is this video. great quality!! maybe i'll post them on my facebook page-
I was brought up with this album even seen The Who Play it when it just came out in Detroit The Greatest Band Ever I'll see u in Detroit on 28th of this month and there will be no other Concerts for me I retire U said Pete that if u ever tour again u would be in a wheelchair your not so do the Detroit fans a favor and do one more Jump keep on keeping on God Bless your Tour Oh like in the Album put those cigarettes out Meaning for the respect For Rodger and Pete Smoke your fatties before u get in to see them getting high u can't beat it
Post war. England. F all else to do. Influences POURING in. Tons of manic creative energy in young teenagers. Some, a few per million, focus it into musical talent and stick with it thru thick and some verrrrry thin. And by their late twenties they sound like this.
***** yeah and roger said as much many times over the years. he said Kenny was a bro from way back which was great but he was an awful choice as drummer. roger wanted to try stuart copeland.
***** good call...and that's about how Roger described Kenny too in a way: great bloke, 4/4 solid all day long but never anything beyond that artistically, which Roger was never shy about pointing out
it's not Charlton Athletics and Football Ground - it's the Charlton Athletic Football ground - the name of the soccer club is Charlton Athletic FC - just a nit-picky point! I was there.
This wans't there "Quadrophenia" tour. They had already abandoned playing a lot of Quad to the technical difficulties and played just a few numbers from it. This was one of the 3 Big Stadium Clubs they played in England between 74 and 76. Not part of a "tour".
This is one of the few vids of "Drowned" with Roger on vocals. They should have used for "Kids Are Alright". By the way, it looks like Pete has a toothpick or a cigarette in his mouth.
Love Keith but when the Who performed this song live in the early 80s Kenny Jones brought so much more to this song along with the added keyboards. Some songs Moon just destroyed.
Chaos under control.
Best band ever...
That's the f###ing truth my friend!!!!💜✊💪😎
I was at this one, saw them 40 years later at Hyde Park. Amazing.
@Gary Fletcher And they did it with pure talent, and word of mouth.
by far, Quadrophenia is the best.
Yes
The bass and drums are so locked together...
On top of ALL the other greatness here.......@5:38 Townshend's Kung Fu master high kick!!!!
I didn't know Drowned was captured on film....Incredible Who at their best.
I was there in '74 and back stage. I was with a bunch of guys from Strand Hotels who were asked to look after the band when they came off. It was amazing and never to be forgotten event!
***** and now you rip in peace before see this amazing band.
👍
Moon was all over this one. Brilliant.
True artistry...
My favorite album of all time. Strong from beginning to end.
4:00 Keith Moon is the best of all times
Capo on the 5th fret! Solo right thru it! Fantastic!
Best rock and roll bass ever..
Bands like this do not exist anymore....shame
You're just not looking hard enough
❤❤❤❤❤❤

Ooo
So You´ve been in Georgia at 1974. Fox theater in Atlanta in Utopia`s concert. Recall the music and take another one...
Wow!!!!...sounds exak...like album...yet better?????
Damn that was epic. Wish it would have been included in the "Kids are All Right" movie.

One of my top five Who songs and the definitive live version. John Entwistle is the Who.
Keith was whacking the heck out of his kit! A great performance by the band as a whole.
I was there, Charlton 1974, think we also had Montrose, Lindisfarne, Bad Company and Humble Pie
John is playing the shit out of that bass
freaking amazing live track by Moonie
the ox never moved or deviated, rock solid bass player, the best ever
Entwistle is my favourite musical instrumentalist along with cellist Jacqueline du Pre.
Terrific! Keith Moon has to be the most all out attach rock drummer ever! Jim Henson must of had him in mind when he came up with Muppet's drummer Animal. The OX and the Fenderbird!!!!!! Rockin it
I know the band is rocking and out of control but I am so impressed with the discipline of Roger Daltrey.
Roger said Keith was on top of his game in 1974. Magnificent, I think he said. And rightly so. 😊
I had the good fortune to have been at this concert, absolutely excellent despite the poxy weather.
You could see steam rising off the audience when the Who came on stage!!!
Around 3 minutes in I realized that they weren't playing for the audience, they were playing for each other. Great rendition
The Ox and a Fenderbird 3:57 one of my favorite John runs:
And the Real Me.
Awesome! The best Band ever.
You will never see Keith Moon use a high-hat.
+Brian B He had a hi-hat at this show. Watch Bell Boy
Skynrd opened for the Who,The Rest of the Band Couldn't Keep up with the Backing Tracks For Quad, Townshend Went Backstage and Ripped the Backing Tracks To Shreds then played Some Oldies
I was 16 and there. I remember the heavy rain, but a fantastic gig
we don't see guitar like this anymore. or bands like them :,(
That's one pretty good live band right there.
Great version from 74 period. Played without backing tapes - shame they didn't do more Quad tracks at this concert and others of that period.

Cracking!
don't see much footage of QUADROPHENIA stuff. 'the KIDS are ALRIGHT' ignores it. this is well done ,fresh Who stuff .THANX, BIG TIME.
I was fortunate enough to be there at the time... great festival and gig by the one and only Who..... les mayers
Thanks for this post!
The Who will always be special to me like the Stones, very distinct sounding songs. You always know it's them
Thanks for this post never seen footage of this before 49 years ago seeing them in St. Helens in July 23 amazing still brilliant ❤
this is one of my fav Who songs. Also, if I ave to listento other than album for this song it's this version. Brilliant!!
This is truly rock! This song is suprubly well done!
so yeah..i held that guitar at a festival in my area...fucking AMAZING
holy shit! Is John Entwistle human?! how does he play so damn fast?!
They don't call him Thunderfingers for nothing!
Cocaine 😁
Love Pete’s sound. The Les Paul Deluxe straight into the Hiwatt amps was a good setup for his style of playing. Great video. Thanks for posting.

If u look moon don't use the 5 drums in front of him
A sonic assault on your senses-for my $$ the best live band ever-the Allmans a very close second.
The greatest ever

Absolutely amazing to see footage from this concert!! Thanks 👍👍👍
just realized i have beautiful close up glossy photos from roger at this show. one that he signed. they're beautiful and so is this video. great quality!! maybe i'll post them on my facebook page-
5:38 holy cow
Keith crazy cute!!!!
i love the way the all play their own solos almost
thank you for the upload.
Je les ai vu à l'époque à Cambrai, c'était génial !! 😊
The shred masters !!
Saw one of the NYC shows, too. Unfortunately, it was the night they walked out during Punk/Godfather. But, up until then I was blissed
Pete Townshends obsessed with water.and he's a fucking genius🇬🇧😁

John and the black Fenderbird, BRAVO!
YES!!!!!!
Keith + John = the shizit! I wish I had players like this with me on stage!
Fenderbird!!!!!
Roger can handle the high notes. He has a great voice anyway.
They have no rhythm section in this band. They have four leads and they make it work ! Name another that has done that ?
How are Keith and John that good?
Post war. England. F all else to do. Influences POURING in. Tons of manic creative energy in young teenagers. Some, a few per million, focus it into musical talent and stick with it thru thick and some verrrrry thin. And by their late twenties they sound like this.
@@silasmarner7586 idk lots of people spend their lifetimes learning a craft and don't sound like that.
what about Pete, dude? Clearly underrated as guitar player. His fault ? being a genius composer. People don't give credit to multi-talented artists.
Hands down the greatest rhythm section of all time
@@silasmarner7586100% right.
How is it possible that Entwistle found all those amazing jackets?!?
watch keith on this and then watch kenny in 79 playing the same song.
boom-chicka-boom.
***** yeah and roger said as much many times over the years. he said Kenny was a bro from way back which was great but he was an awful choice as drummer. roger wanted to try stuart copeland.
Only Keith Moon plays Quadrophenia.. the same thing in studio
***** good call...and that's about how Roger described Kenny too in a way: great bloke, 4/4 solid all day long but never anything beyond that artistically, which Roger was never shy about pointing out
To be fair, the Small Faces had some of that Who wildness going on...but that was in the 60's.
Agreed. Moon was the man for the job.
it's not Charlton Athletics and Football Ground - it's the Charlton Athletic Football ground - the name of the soccer club is Charlton Athletic FC - just a nit-picky point! I was there.
5:38 Pete does karate.
Wasn't a "Rock n' Roll Animal" era Lou Reed playing at Charlton too? I always saw him on that famous show poster.
I wanna drooooownaaaaaaaahown yeah 😉 🇬🇧 😎 WATP
IN COLD WATER!
This wans't there "Quadrophenia" tour. They had already abandoned playing a lot of Quad to the technical difficulties and played just a few numbers from it. This was one of the 3 Big Stadium Clubs they played in England between 74 and 76. Not part of a "tour".
One of the few concerts where Keith's toms are clearly heard....you can here them in other concerts, just not quite as bold as they are here.
This is one of the few vids of "Drowned" with Roger on vocals. They should have used for "Kids Are Alright". By the way, it looks like Pete has a toothpick or a cigarette in his mouth.
I know this been up some while, but the word "And" is superfluous.
Live at Charlton Athletic's Football Ground.
haha, yeah John and Pete were wasted. But Moonie looked pretty together for a change lol
Whatever he was on on a given night, the vast majority of the times, he pulled it together and played brilliantly.
Amazing. Isn't this edited down though? Pretty sure on my bootleg of this gig its about 9 mins long
Love Moon's kit here! Poor Roger...why did Pete write songs with high notes? Just to piss Roger off? :)
Love Keith but when the Who performed this song live in the early 80s Kenny Jones brought so much more to this song along with the added keyboards. Some songs Moon just destroyed.
I glad Pete quit drinking
What's Pete on about at the beginning, right before the song starts?
Roger has one job, sing in tune.
Ox's black Fenderbird!!!
This is a PERFECT example of why Keith Moon and John Entwistle, were quite simply IRREPLACEABLE in THE WHO.
yah i was just thinking that:D
High as fuck
John BLING!
Amazing what one will say when deeply jealous...lol
why were they pissed ?
Because if u don't don't have attitude u can't play like that
i dont care what they say you cant wack the who.
Pete is so plastered!!
SWANEE MAINTHEME____________*
anyone care about sound quality?
haha john is shiny
