Egg Collection Strategies for Heritage Turkeys

Heritage turkeys are intelligent- you need a strategy for collecting the eggs without causing problems. The answer is pretty simple... I also mention my stragegy for selective breeding in regards to egg collection.

Since I use mine for stockdog training, I can't let them go broody. So I put up at night, free range/ work till midday, put up for 2 hrs, free range/ work, then put up at night. Most then lay in the coops, and maybe one or two out of 30 attempt to nest during free range. They are smart!

This was very helpful, thank you. Most of my chickens actually do the same thing. I have to sneak their eggs out of their nests and leave some or they will try to hide their nests from me. I even had a hen stop laying for a week when she caught me taking her eggs because she got sad. The again, out of our 12 hens we only have two production birds and they don't care much if we take all the eggs, its the other ten that I have to be sneaky around. Our ducks don't care and our turkey hasn't started laying yet so its nice to know I have to be sneaky with her when the time comes. Thank you for all your insightful videos, they have been a big help to me in caring for our turkey since we received her.

Thanks this helps me. Got broad breasted bronze. Going into 2nd laying season with them now. Ate 1st 2 last year then left ALL rest alone. All eventually went to rot. They mate often, but either don't fully connect or need to be incubated. Ate 1st 2 again yesterday. I will start marking with dates and removing so no rot this year. It is like an Easter hunt for months with their little side stashes. Intelligent like little fluffy velociraptors 🦃

Very nice turkey set up :)
Im not very prepared but willing to build something
We have ours in a rabbit run without the rabbits for the first few days
Its lagre enough to keep them for a few days or so till they get used to us bringing them treats
They like me chirping bot talking lol

My turkeys are already one years old and they don't mate and no eggs ,what is the problem

Great info. What about when they abandon a nest and decide to make another? can you throw them all in the incubator? had one abandon their nest box with 14 in about a week into its sitting. Was going to try to go natural but it decided it wanted to move to a different box and has started to lay there. Any suggestions?

Then you take them to the incubator or have the turkey sit on them in a safer place???

Use fakes and maybe swap in a duck or chicken egg let them build up a couple.
Take some, swap some, incubate some, counterfeit some.
