What's So Special About Heritage Turkeys?

  • Like most people who raise heritage turkeys, we were shocked to discover that they are intelligent, curious, and social- displaying a full range of emotional responses on par with dogs, cats, or any other pet. Equally surprising was how easily we became attached to them!

I am amazed how the turkey poults gave me the ability to stop using the medication I needed for my mental illness disability. Unfortunately I also learned that I needed the medication for my mental disability to keep them alive.

We also raised 5 turkeys. My sister took 4 back to her farm, and we kept one. As a pet. She is our special treasure. Smart, loving, and nothing like what we were all taught about turkeys. She will always be with us always. She greets us every day. Talks to us. Runs after us. Sits with us. Takes a nap when we sit with her. Her name is sweetpea. We are so glad she never went back to the farm. Her bothers ended up in the freezer. Thanks for encouraging everyone to re-evaluate turkeys..

I was surprised when I raised my first flock of Heritage Bronze Turkeys. Nothing like vcd what people explained to me.
One of my hens wont let me do ANYTHING in the run until she's had her quota of love and attention.
The boys absolutely love long conversations. Lol
    Loved the video

Well said!! I have 5 heritage turkeys (one red palm hen and four royal palms) and they are EXACTLY as you say. I tell the family I am going out for some turkey time when I feel like I need to chill out lol and they climb on me, lay down to be tickled, they preen me and are just completely adorable! This is a wake up call to me as we have had hens for many years and some geese, but these little ones are something on another level and so enjoyed as you say! Lively video, thank you 😊

You couldn't have said it better. We bought 5 white broad breasted turkeys from TSC and i am still shocked how chill they are and how they follow me. Never owned turkeys....but i am sold. Next year we will get a heritage breed and start a flock that will sustain our homestead with protein.
I will not eat the bugs. LOL

I walk my turkeys with my goats when taking them to pasture and the turkeys have very strong bonds with the great pyrenees live stock gaurdians. Its amazing how funny they can be I can't eat them I get way more enjoyment seeing them live life.

The turkey that was getting petted was so cute! By the way I have chickens and they are really sweet and have very strong personalities. I am not offended any more when people say bad things about chickens.

My 22 year old daughter loved her turkeys. When she asked for a turkey at the feed store I told her that her grandma had turkeys. My daughter had ducks and chickens from the time she was born. She prefers turkeys. Sadly they were good mothers and we had so many they ate everything in my yard and garden. They are now in the freezer. At least an eagle took our favorite so we didn't have to.

I just bought two boubon reds. I have some very friendly chickens, they hang out with us, but the turkeys are just as friendly.

I love our turkies! Gobbles made it but turkey lurkey drowned in kiddy pool which was probably my fault because my older ducks were being chased by turkies because the duck tried to bully the turkey but turkey said he'll naw and them they calmed down amd ducks got in pool. It was so hot we went in a sec to cool off and come back out and our larger turkey was drowned. Guessing the ducks seen him struggling and drowned him because it should've been plenty tall enough to stand up or get out. Learned the hard way but got 4 more white heritage since our first 2 were broad breasted and love them. My broad breasted seem really smart. Mine cried for me when I leave him outside and get excited an runs to me when I come back outside. Cutest things ever except for my little goose! He or she is an absolute sweetheart!

Preference of raising Bourbon Reds compared to Chocolates? We have had Reds, great turkeys by the way, but looking at Chocolates.

The only thing I would disagree is the statement that chickens are not as intelligent as heritage turkeys. Actually, they are pretty smart birds and can be tamed. And they are social too, but with different fashion. Especially breeds like brahma - the lovable gentle giants. Can't say the same thing about broilers though.

Please don't stop. Trillions of videos on chickens, which I love. We need just as many on turkeys.
PS I disagree with you about chickens. My chickens are everything you said about turkeys, which I also have, Narragansett turkeys.

Same here...we used to have free roam chickens and they would jump on your lap and cuddle...they loved being petted 😁

Thank you for the video I loved it! But one thing I'm very curious about with all that you learned about them do you still raise them and eat them? (I'm not looking to down you in any way I'm onistly curious)

We rarely eat them, only the ones that can't be kept as pets because they're mean, etc.
