    I disabled the VCM on my 2011 Odyssey at 59k Kms when we bought it. I also changed the plugs at that point and found the rears were really fouled up already. Since then, I change the oil every 5k Kms and the plugs have been changed at 120k Kms and will need to be changed again soon as we are at 190k Kms and still running perfectly.

      @@prokopprusek9134 I've had an S-VCM in for a year, about 20k km, in a 2010 Odyssey EX-L. The engine got a new cylinder three sparkplug at the same time as the S-VCM. I pulled the plug recently to look at it and there was no sign of oil burning. The prior plug had about 50k km on it (installed at 160k km), with VCM enabled, it was carboned and there was a short, transient, episode of misfires on the cylinder, and the oil was down to the bottom of the dip stick at 50% oil life, which was unusual, and indicated some oil buring had occured during. That prompted the S-VCM install. When I replaced the original plugs at 160k km there was carboning on plugs 1,2,3, and 4. It was worst on 3. Which is typical. The van now runs fine today, modest oil consumption, and I expect it will have VCM disabled for rest of its life.

    2015 Odyssey. VCM on since new. Works great and saves gas. No oil consumption according to the dipstick. Had transmission shutter at 60,000 and the dealer found service bulletin. They did a triple drain and fill with Honda ATF, then a firmware update. Problem resolved. I've done a double drain and fill every 30,000 since and the transmission is working great. Oh yea, I change my oil between 30-40% on the less than adequate maintenance minder, not the 15% that dealers recommend.

I attribute that to 1 The ONE, Original Owner had it's oil & filter changed every approx. 5000 miles, at a Honda dealer. 2 When I replaced the spark plugs, before the trip, I added a few ounces of Seafoam , then Gummout carb spray into each cylinder. letting it sit a few days. I also (with plugs OUT!) rotated the engine over, by hand. This to allow the solvents to really soak into the rings and ring "Lands" (the grooves in the pistons that rings sit it). Just some input on deactivation of VCM. I went with the S-VCM. It is better in that it deactivates the VCM by tricking the car that it’s a few degrees cooler than operating temperature BUT, it hooks up to battery and has a brain that monitors the actual temp and if it notices actual temp rising above normal then it deactivates itself so you’ll get the real guage readout and not have an overheat situation that your notified about too late.

      @@kalel0192Just Google s-vcm it's a small company making them, you give your vin to verify they are sending you the correct kit.
      My car had severe oil burn. Matches the 13-078 warranty recall on vcm accords. I had 1.5 qts per 1000 miles burned. Adding the svcm reduced it to 1qt per 1000miles and I proceeded with new piston rings and spark plugs. All the rings oil control rings had spun out of place and were carboned up. My catalytic converter were also destroyed and needed to be replaced.
      For the accord V6 2008-2010 with the j35Z2 engine it's a requirement. For the j35Z3 (2011-2012) I do not think it is necessary bc the vcm is not present on the engines valve train.
      The main issue was the vcm disabling the valve train on those cylinders increasing oil blow by and fouling the plugs when reenabled. Fouled plugs results in unburnt fuel in the exhaust over heating the cats and excessive burnt engine oil being sent down the exhaust also hurts the cats.

    Not only do they shut down the injectors and the spark, but the problem is that they KEEP THE VALVES CLOSED thereby creating a vacuum when the cylinders are going on the downward stroke thus sucking oil into the combustion chamber. The compression rings and the oil ring were constructed for compression, not vacuum. "The piston still goes up and down." Wow what an eye-opener that was.

  • @amcascooper90
    @amcascooper90 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    You said that when VCM is activated that the valves continue to open and close, that only the fuel is cut off, is that correct? I thought the valves opening and closing was deactivated as well. That is the whole purpose of the spool valve / oil control valves that are mounted on the cylinder heads, they hydraulically lock and unlock the rocker arms using oil pressure.

    • @georgejetson6230
      @georgejetson6230 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are correct, in that the valve operation is disabled by oil pressure using the control solenoid, which is the reason for the plugs and rings getting fouled up. It seems that the vacuum created by the the piston traveling up and down in the cylinder bore with the valves closed causes oil to get sucked up into the combustion chamber and ring lands, gunking it all up!

    Great video on an interesting topic for all Honda owners. I am very interested if they offer a VCM muzzler for the new DOHC J series as I am considering a future Passport myself.
    I do feel like VCM is one of those deals with the devil. We do get our NA V6, yes, but at what cost? Direct injection and VCM issues such as oil consumption, spark plugs fouling, motor mount wear and NVH. This is probably the last hurrah for Honda V6’s until the end of the decade. The Toyota 2GR-FE is on its way out and the older 4.0 V6 4Runner is on its last legs.
    Even tried and true platforms come with an increasing amount of compromises to meet CAFE regulations and the EPA fuel economy circuit for best MPG.
    It does make me appreciate the Honda Accord 6-6. SOHC V6, no VCM on the manuals, port injection, no stop start and of course, VTEC.

    I changed my plugs at 90 thousand on my v6 As a pre owned car not knowing how past has been driven the spark plugs I took out looked very good the perfect tan color
    No sign of oil burn so I think there so many variables that go into this and may be were the car is located and there temperature
    As i stated above the hotter the car runs for some reason the more it deactivates cylinders so if u live in Texas it can doing it all the time vs couple times
    In winter like never dose it lol
