Hey yo, seems like alot of people ask questions here, I recently came into owning a 2007 honda pilot ex l, it has a J35A9 ij it, and I'm wondering if all these other parts from the other models will still fit on it, unsure, peace and love ✌
Honda downplays the numbers on the J35 (specifically, the J35Y2). It's producing close to or more than 300hp at the crank. I used to think the J35 was seriously an underwhelming engine until you realize engines like the VQ35 and Toyota's V6, the 2GR are running DOHC, a more advanced variable valve time system, higher compression numbers, direct fuel injection, and yet, the J35 still meets or exceeds their performance numbers with low compression (10:1), SOHC, relative V-TEC system, low r.pm. (6800 r.p.m.), and port-injection. If Honda were to employ DOHC, increase the compression numbers, add port/direct injection, a more advanced variable valve timing, and increase the redline (8000 r.p.m.), I have no doubt the J35 could easily 350+ whp (410 at the crank). However, having that much technology in a Honda V6 would increase the cost considerably. The J35 is an incredible well built engine that clearly shows how Honda doesn't have to overly complicate engine technology to meet or exceed their rivals. On the other hand, it would be nice if Honda did release Type-R variant of the J35. A nice good bye to show the world what Honda can do with NA V6.

2006 Ridgeline with 190k miles, checking in. J35 is still rock solid reliable in 2024 with just normal maintenance. Maybe it's not a truck. But after owning it for 18 years, I can confirm a 250hp V-TEC-powered AWD mini-van with a truck bed is still pretty bad-ass in its own way.

I never considered a J pipe. That is really nice. So thank you for your knowledge!
That camshaft wear was due to the rocker shaft bridge being torqued incorrectly from the factory. There was a TSB about it. Either way, VCM was always a load of unnecessary problems (keyword being unnecessary). There is another common issue with J series rear bank cams being spalled. That seems like a valve clearance or oil supply issue (to the head). You'll find a LOT of J series that "tick" and it sounds like a valve issue, but NOBODY knows what the sound is. It's not valves, because the noise isn't present for the first 15 seconds after startup. I've found countless people with this issue. Also, the original service manual scheduled valve lash adjustments for "when noisy." Major mistake. Other shops have found that valve lash adjustments were necessary after only 20K miles on most J series.
@@Npc5150 On the Odyssey forum after seeing many users' experiences, we've come to a general consensus that a valve adjustment is a good idea at some point between 150-200k miles.

Question what would cause this engine (Stock) to Break timing belts? i know age , bad idler bearings, weak belt tensioner or oil on belt. But this is not the case...so what is happening? Marks perfect, runs perfect then out of nowhere it breaks at low rpm , leaving a stop light or turning corner. Happened twice less than 2,500 miles on new Honda Belt? What should I look for to solve this????
I wish Honda made a DOHC V6 J-series 😂 It is interesting that for things like Porsche, Ferarri, BMW, Lotus, and Corvette track builds with 1000hp Honda engine swaps many people still prefer using the I4 K-series instead of the bigger displacement V6 J-series.
The J-series engines are not only bigger in size and harder to fit in certain chassis, but they especially weigh more. Great and reliable engine, though.
I know this is an old video, but I can say from my experiences that the J-series engines without displacement-on-demand are amazing engines. A good friend of mine has a 2007 Acura TL with the 3.2 liter and its been such a great engine. On long drives it is not unheard of for my friend to get 35 miles per gallon at 80 miles per hour. In town, it has no trouble pulling around at idle and it is willing to go as soon as you touch the throttle, even with the insanely tall geared 5 speed auto.
I have a 2007 Vue. The J35 came in the 2004 to 2007 V6 Vues. I gather the J35 engine in the Vue is the same one as the 2001 to 2002 Acura MDX. What I'm wondering is if it's the same tranny as well...

Do you have a video on the best j series parts swap for a power build? I'm thinking about making my Accord coupe worth driving ( it has a f23/auto in it currently).
A company just needs to make an awesome looking hood with a bump for j series swap (or rework/metal work oem hoods if people want to stay oem), like how the g2 eclipse has a bump to make up for the timing belt/cams.
Back in the spo-com years (mid 1990s to mid 2000s) there were a lot of aftermarket companies making car body styling parts, many of them made hoods with either vents, cowls or even taller that mimics hoods for American cars with tall engines. Too bad all them went out of the market. However I think with some creativity maybe the scoops available for the Imprezas can be put on the civics hoods and make that hole less noticeable.
Thank you, I love my J35 in my Acura MDX. Could you tell me why my engine has more power than a Honda Odyssey and other V6 Honda models have any modifications? MDX is very heavy but with 4 wheel drive it goes like a bullet

Sorry, had to give a thumbs down for not mentioning VCM problems, timing belt and cam pitting. Best bet is disable VCM via one of the many easy to install aftermarket devices, unless you don't mind burning ~qt oil ever 1000 miles, going through cat converters and engine mounts more often. Nothing you can do about timing belt beside changing every 105K miles and hope the tensioner doesn't fail in between TB changes, in which case engine is gone. Engine from a so called quality make like Honda should have timing chain, not belt. Honda cams suffer pitting wiithout the zinc levels oils of yesteryear had. Don't expect Honda to fix any of this on future years of this engine. There will be no more R&D to improve this engine given direction industry is going with hybrids and electric vehicles.
I have a 2009 accord exl 3.5 vcm with 170k miles did timing at 150k … still running strong. It does burn more oil than normal but that started at around 140k so I check it once in a while. Other than that, I’ve had non of the issues you mentioned. Most people don’t keep cars that long and rack up 170k miles.
Agreed. Most valuable thing I did was install S-VCM to bypass the VCM. Terrible design that sounded good in theory, sucked in reality. My 2014 Accord has 75,000 miles, doesn't use a drop of oil and is full time V6. Gets around 28mpg combined. Aside from the design flaws you listed, I'm hoping for another 100,000 miles if not more.
My ONLY complaint with the engine is that it still uses a timing belt. Honda needs to convert it to a chain, or make it a non interference engine...converting it to a chain would be easier and less expensive...
Timing belt engines are a little more forgiving about oil changes and because the belt is a maintenance item they make it accessible and easier to change. Timing chains are supposed to be good for the life of the engine but when things go wrong it's supper expensive to fix.
@@jacobvanbruggen5462 I've watched the video on replacing the timing belt on this engine and it's definitely NOT easy to change. I can see why mechanics charge $1000 or more to do it....
I have said saturn vue. I was wondering what info you might have on the this start-up rattling from under the hood. I can tell you i don't think it's the timing belt tensioner, and it is not the rh engine mount. I have read online about a fix that can be done...re-torque of the rocker shaft bridge .im not sure i am 100% confident to do this myself, but i could with the right instructions. The sound does go away once it is warmed up. 2007 vue. 186k mi. Regular oil changes with recommended oil.
Man just so you know the biggest culprit is a valve lash adjustment usually and if you haven't yet then do before any problems! ADJUSTMENT NEEDED (What sticker under hood should say) lol. This silver one is my 5th REDLINE and she was abused before me and barely ran! Now after a diet and some adjustments/swaps as well as teaching her how to breathe and fart better she's smashin fools at a 6sec 0to60.
I've seen an 08 Ridgeline burn the cyl 2 exhaust valve. Other than timing belts neglected that tear and bend valves, and neglecting oil changes I've never seen a j35 blow up. Extremely reliable engines. The older automatic transmissions bolted to them are a different story.
What do you think about changing the cam to shave down cam what I wanna do is switch it to 3.7 twin cam are you saying to 3.2 heads flow little better if I Port them
The best flowing head is the j32a2 heads. They're not the best flowing instake wise but exhaust wise they're fantastic. Honda moved to the integrated manifold on the head which hurts exhaust flow in most j series after 2003.

ironically k24 is legit the best 4cyl engine ever built. I’ve had 2 and they were both 200k plus before selling
Despite the trade-offs made for low vs high torque, the J30/35 in the Accords gives you nice 100 kph to 140 kph acceleration.

The car is a beast, but I blew the differential in my B7WA transmission recently. Don't know whether it was just a bad diff, or it's too weak by design for this kind of motor. Anyone know whether a differential from an old Honda Odyssey is any more durable?
Wow you did all of that?! How much did it cost, and what we’re the performance numbers?
@@MrSamPhoenix it was about 130 thousand rubles (I live in Russia), I don't remember the exchange rate in 2021, but let's say it was 75-ish to the dollar, that's about 1700-1800 dollars.
You can use the one from the oddessey. Now the pilot you cannot. You want the baya trans. From the 07 on up from the accord.
Honda had all kinds of issues with the early 5 speed autos simply because by designed it would get starved for lubrication on the second gear so it would end up slipping. The Honda trans was a different breed. It was setup like a manual. Why they were othen called the hondamatic.

Exactly which 8th gen and what j35 ? The manual coupes have the best one. As for the sedan they’re equipped with vcm and don’t use vtec lobes
I didn't expect this one, but well Bryce, thx, I've been considering at some point, a 10th gen Civic swapped with this very engine, try to compare it to the VQ35 or make the 2GR video and compare it to this very engine, these 3 have similar displacement though the J35 is the only one to have an undersquare bore-stroke ratio

Hoping for a follow up video on the J35Y8 3.5 V6 DOHC and No VTEC
You forgot about VCM. VCM is present in many J35s and has caused some issues. Some VCM J35 engines are also prone to premature camshaft wear.
I have an 08 accord v6 coupe auto trans, and have so far put on a takeda sri, tl type s cams, throttle body spacer, fully custom 2.5 in exhaust with one cat delete, on a 93 tune making 315 horsepower, putting on the j32 heads and j37 crank and intake tho I’m gonna need to look into that, especially that j pipe

This is an interference engine. How is it breaking belts without destroying the engine?
I wish Honda made a DOHC V6 J-series 😂
It is interesting that for things like Porsche, Ferarri, BMW, Lotus, and Corvette track builds with 1000hp Honda engine swaps many people still prefer using the I4 K-series instead of the bigger displacement V6 J-series.
K series has more support. Only reason
The new Acura tlx type s is a 3.0 dohc v6 Turbo 😏

How are you can I installed a 2012 crosstour 3.5 heads in a 3.7
Sorry, had to give a thumbs down for not mentioning VCM problems, timing belt and cam pitting.
Very well put .
Is the j35z2 a reliable engine if I have vcm disabled!?
So I have j30a4 engine can I put some j35 parts on my j30?
I drive a 05 rl. I have the rv6 j pipe but not sure what exhaust to get. Any suggestions???
Great content, do you plan on doing a video on the bmw v8s? m60 m62 and s62 :)
Do the benefits of the j32 head flow outweigh the decrease in displacement? Or does it not affect the displacement much
Heads do not play a part in displacement as the pistons only move inside the cylinder, in the block.

I have read online about a fix that can be done...re-torque of the rocker shaft bridge .im not sure i am 100% confident to do this myself, but i could with the right instructions. The sound does go away once it is warmed up.

Does anyone know if there is anyone who has figured out a way to mount this to a manual transmission and mount it longitudinally?? Any applications?
the J35A9 Ridgeline 06-08' engines have a common Cylinder 4 low compression (usually due to bent/leaking exhaust valve). Any thoughts?
I've seen an 08 Ridgeline burn the cyl 2 exhaust valve. Other than timing belts neglected that tear and bend valves, and neglecting oil changes I've never seen a j35 blow up. Extremely reliable engines. The older automatic transmissions bolted to them are a different story.
Does the 2011 accord coupe v6 have the J35?
Yes
What do you think about changing the cam to shave down cam what I wanna do is switch it to 3.7 twin cam are you saying to 3.2 heads flow little better if I Port them
The best flowing head is the j32a2 heads. They're not the best flowing instake wise but exhaust wise they're fantastic. Honda moved to the integrated manifold on the head which hurts exhaust flow in most j series after 2003.
