  • I decided to tackle the valve clearance adjustment on my L120 tractor and made a video to help out anyone who might be thinking about trying it. It's not hard to do. There are a few details to pay attention to but YOU CAN DO IT!
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks for watching.

      No problem. Since doing this mine has started up REALLY quick and just runs better. Even commented to my wife today after it started up when i barely turned the key.

    Next time, take the hood off, it is way easier to gain access.

    Adjust intake 3, exhaust 5. If having problem cranking, go to 2and 4, It will be fine.

    Did you know that the Cam has a compression release and your supposed to turn the motor like 1/4 inch after set to dead center. When the motor build to much compression it's a release. If that breaks on the cam no good! How does your mower run after the adjustment?

    • @thehandyhomeowner9781
      @thehandyhomeowner9781  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mower runs amazingly well ever sonce adjustment. It already ran well but took a few cranks to start up. Now it starts when the key is bumped and runs as good as ever.
      Thanks for the comment

    My L118 manual valve clearance has a different spec’ for the intake valve versus the exhaust valve. Just curious as to why the difference.

    • @thehandyhomeowner9781
      @thehandyhomeowner9781  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm guessing the exhaust valve spec is larger and i suspect becsuse the hot exhaust causes the metal to expand that much more so it needs just a bit more room to end up at the correct size when hot. Maybe somebody else has a better reason.
      Make sure you adjust the valves with the engine stone cold.
      Thanks

    At 4:00 you say you have a video on how to modify this and I cannot find that video in the list? Can you advise?

    • @thehandyhomeowner9781
      @thehandyhomeowner9781  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. It's gone. Well basically i think i simply changed the screw and nut holding it together and used a nylock nut so it cannever fall apart and you end up with all the little pieces of feeler guage all over the floor. Haha. Sorry for the confusion.

    I have black oil like on my muffler and it smokes at first start. How do I fix that. I have John Deere L120

      I'm not 100 percent sure all of what might cause that. Hopefully someone else will commebt here for you. Otherwise i suggest the john deere lawnand tractor group on facebook

      The crank seal on the bottom of the motor can fail and get oil all over the frame and muffler. Not sure that is your issue but I have seen it before. If the bottom of the engine and frame are covered in oil, keep a close eye on the oil level as a bad leak will run the engine dry and then you will have junk. Best to have a repair shop look at it and fix what is wrong.

    People be careful here the hex nut is the adjuster and the torx is the lock. Not the other way around. Once adjusted hold the hex nut with wrench and turn the torx as the lock

      Mine is just the opposite, the hex is the lock.
