    Out of the blue, my Brigs dropped a cylinder. Must be a shot coil right? Resistance was a bit low so I replaced the coil. No fix and now the "good" cylinder is acting up. Thanks Taryl for pointing me at the diode pack. Never thought of it. But knowing that I always enjoy your videos, I went looking and there you were with a very clear diagnosis. I did not find a reference to the diodes on any of the other small engine channels I checked. Thanks much!

    I subbed because of this video. I've got a mower with a Briggs 20hp v-twin & to cut a long story short my issue was the diodes in the kill wire. Ordered some diodes online, made up a new kill wire & now mower is running like a dream. Thanks very much for making this video. Kind Regards from Ireland👍🏼

    First time I read about those diodes! I probably lost two weekends on this!!!!!
    Now it’s got a rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, re-adjusted valve push rods, new battery, etc.... but... engine would not start even though I could see spark (I don’t have the right tool, so checking for spark with the plug out of the head).
    Glad you made this video! Very glad I found it too! :)

    After improperly wiring my new solenoid I fried some ground wires (2004 Cub Cadet ZRT 50 w Briggs and Stratton 22HP Intek). I pulled my main wiring harness and repaired/replaced damaged wires but mower would only crank without starting. After a week of checking switches, fuses, coils, spark plugs, etc. and killing battery trying I finally caught this video. Taryl nailed it.
    THANK YOU TARYL!!!! I can mow until I get the kill wires fixed. You're a gentleman and a scholar, I owe you a 6 pack of Hamm's.

    *** SPARK TESTER NOTE - See Video: 13:11
    I bought these exact spark testers (2), and while they work great, they are poorly made since
    the black heat shrink does not hold the glass tube tight, and that flashing element will
    soon break free.
    I secured mine with super glue.
    At 13:11, I see you secured yours with silicon, and that's a great fix also, probably better.
    I noticed over the past 10 years or so, everything I buy needs some little clever fix to keep
    it from breaking. International markets (Chinese/foreign) make things cheap for
    competitive reasons, which means they are poorly made, but the alert buyer will benefit
    from cheaper price by examining the product, and making it better!
    Thanks For Thinking!
    -- Mr Brown.

    Thanks for this video. A little story here. I have worked on engines all my life well about 55 years or more. Today was the first time I have trouble with a diode someone gave me a zero turn with a 16hp B & S twin he could not fix. Long story short he replaced the kill wire with one without diodes and this helped me fix this old mower. Thanks

    Thank you very much for your assistance in my briggs & Stratton V twin engine that has two Diles in it one day old was bad I traced it down myself but I also had a friend of mine check the diode‘s with a tester. Now the engine is doing it again it’s it’s shutting off while running and I think it’s somethings getting hot causing it to shut down. So after five or 10 minutes of waiting for it to cool off I can fire it back up again. Thank you and I’ll be keeping you on here. Thank you and God bless you and everyone in your family and everyone that works for you.

    Great Video Guys. I could have use that one a few years ago when I run into my first burnt Diode. Drove me crazy. I knew the Diodes were there just didn't understand how they functioned in the circuit, but knew what diodes did so with some study and some meter work finally figured it out. That's when I knew I needed two spark testers for the Briggs Balance test. Rock On

    I just bought a used snapper and it’s running intermittently on one cylinder. I just bought two new coils 😫. Hopefully it’s my problem. But if it isn’t I now know to check them stupid diodes. The previous owner had problems with the same thing costing two different shop bills at a cool 2800$. The one coil would shut it off if unplugged. The cap was so rusty I can’t believe the shop missed it and didn’t replace it. I replaced the cap and still running on one cylinder. Glad you explained the problems. I have a plan B now

  • @joevogelberger9922
    @joevogelberger9922 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    YES! I spent some time today figuring out what you just explained on my 1996 20hp Briggs IC V-twin I'm resurrecting.
    Thanks for reminding me that the gad-frappin' solenoid'll starve it for fuel even if the kill wires are removed. I had forgotten that.
    I learned (and your video confirmed) that the bands on the diodes must be on the *coil* side of the kill wire harness, unlike another TH-camr who had them the other way around in his schematic diagram, but came up with a good electrical solution in lieu of new diodes involving a DPDT switch with the coils on one end (electrically separate coil kill circuits controlled mechanically by a single switch) and the other ends of the switch wired together to the single harness kill wire in case your anti-after fire solenoid is buggered open, modded, or deleted.
    That way all your safety switches still work.
    A quick lookup says they're 1N4007 1000V 1watt diodes for anyone wanting to make their own harness.
    You explained their function better than you had to and the 'improper' wiring examples and their associated symptoms really drove the point home.
    Nice work, man!

    Great video Taryl! I've been working on small engines since I was a teenager and I did not know this. I had an old Briggs opposed twin that was running on one cylinder and I bet this was the problem all along!

    • @notajp
      @notajp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The opposed twin uses a single coil with two wires going to the plugs. It uses “wasted spark”, which means it fires both cylinders at the same time, one at TDC on the compression stroke, while the other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke.

    • @coolbluelights
      @coolbluelights 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey that there's the Brothers Gross at the end! They're rockers! Loved the video. Always wondered if the engine would still run with the kill wire removed, so I would know if the coil was bad, or something was cutting off spark (like one of those pesky safety switches). Thanks for the valuable troubleshooting tip!

  • @LarryMusgrave
    @LarryMusgrave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @Taryl Fixes All
    Is it true that if the diode failed that you should replace the coils because the coils likely caused the diode failure?
    And are the knock off coils at half the cost of OEM worth buying, or should one only purchase OEM coils?
    I'm dealing with this currently on a 2008 Intek 24hp Husqvarna tractor and not sure if I should replace just the diodes, or replace the coils as well.

    > a coil either works or it doesn't
    That's not necessarily true. I have come across coils that will break down when they get hot and either quit working altogether or they're hit-and-miss.
    > if these diodes are bad, I get a reading both ways
    Also, not necessarily true. Diodes can short - meaning that you get a reading both ways - or they can open - meaning that you don't get a reading in either direction. In either case, they would be defective.
    As for the video... wow. I must admit it was hilarious! I feel the need to watch more of your antics... I mean, informational videos :)

    I have a DR chipper that I got for free that has the 16 hp Vanguard twin cyl. Found out one coil was bad and part of the insulation on the kill wire was gone and it was grounding out. I went ahead and ordered two new coils and a kill wire and installed them. It started with starting fluid but did not stay running. So I tore the carbetrator apart and found it full of gunk and had a stuck needle valve. I now have the carbetrator apart and waiting for a new needle valve. Once that comes in everything will be cleaned and put back together and will move on to the next issue. My plan is to fix it a little at a time for a winter project then sell it.

    DIODE SPECIFICATIONS
    Those diodes look like 1N4007 and are rated at 1 AMP / 1000 Volts
    They can be found for about $2 for 100, enough to pass on to your children! (insert laugh track).
    - - -
    Very cheap part. Be AWARE when you replace them, they MUST be oriented correctly.
    One end of the Diode has a ring around it. Keep them oriented properly when you replace them.
    These little guys basically isolate the coils from each other, as Taryl so masterfully explains.
    Keep up the great work!
    And...

    I do not understand what the Diodes are preventing from flowing . Diodes are on the ground circuit so the ground attached to coils works to cause a direct short circuit of the coils ,correct? When ignition is keyed off it connects the coils to ground .Are the diodes necessary due to there being more than one coil? On single coil machines there are no diodes on the coil circuit . I am guessing the two coils hooked to each other in parallell could possibly send stray current from one coil to the other without Diode in line !

  • @lrayvick

    Thanks for the video. The following is somewhat off-topic. Will a 20 hp briggs V twin coil fit a Briggs opposed twin? Are the flywheels the same diameter? Ebay has a new v twin coil for $20 and the opposed twin coil for about $60. My 19.5 hp opposed twin Briggs starts fine, has good power but pops, misfires and surges at all rpm especially at lower rpm. Choke use doesn't help the way it runs. Recent Walbro carb clean with new fuel pump diaphragm, new fuel filter, fuel tank clean, flywheel key is good, new spark plugs with both sparking, re-gapped coil, no intake leaks. I have not increased the diameter of the fixed low speed jet. I looked through a lot of the 284 comments but did not find one like this.

    • @lrayvick
      @lrayvick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forget the above - I just realized my confusion. Ebay has an opposed twin coil listed as for a V twin. Of course the V twin has TWO coils! duh! Since an opposed twin has one coil I guess it has no diodes.

    @tarylfixesall, I’ve watched through all your related BS 20Hp Intel v-twin engine videos… luv the content you produce to help folks!
    Question pls… my JD L120 with above described engine will run / cut, do all, but within a completely random amount of time, independent of outside temperature, the engine will lose 1 cylinder. At times you catch an undeniable whiff of un-burnt fuel when continuing to mow.
    Do those symptoms sound like any past troubleshooting experiences you can recall?
    Thank you.

    So on the last part of the clip, when one diode was removed - the longer wire WITH the diode did not give spark, while the shorter wire WITHOUT the diode did give spark?I thought it should have been the opposite.If someone can explain i'll appreciate it.Thanks, Moses

      Gene Friedman Thank you very much. I understood from the beginning that the coil WITH the functioning diode should work and give spark, and the one without/non working diode should not give spark.That why I don't understand why in the clip it's the opposite - the short wire without diode did have spark, while the longer wire without diode didn't have spark. If you could please explain i'll appreciate that.Thank you again, Moses

      Gene Friedman Thanks again.1. So if the diode was missing on the longer wire, instead on the shorter wire (as shown by Taryl) - in this case we would get spark on the other side of the engine?2. Also, in the part where he shows the blue wire he made without any diodes - he didn't connect it to the ignition, but it still killed the engine, why is that?Thanks again, Moses

      mosheg77 I had trouble understanding it too. I understood from Taryls video that it needed those diodes but couldn't figure out what was happening with them. Think I got it now and glad you asked the question.

    so assuming my diodes are bad and I'm only running on one cylinder. by unm plugging the kill switch and opting not to use it. will it then run both cylinders? as you can tell I know nothing about this. but, I am learning thanks to your vids!

    I have a John steer lawn tractor lx255 with a kuler motor, has spark, shoot some either in the carb but still won't start, also the mechanical fuel pump doesn't pump, so I think the cam shaft is messed up, what are your thoughts, oh also the antibackfire selinoid doesn't work, but it does during test with a battery, so me thinks the John steer is really messed up.

    Great video, i almost got mine fixed. Do you or anyone know if i can run the kill switch wire directly to the ignition?(5 pin). The wire dead ends to nowhere.

    Hey. I just bought a craftsman yt4000 with a 24 hp twin. Thing runs great for about 20 min then dies. As soon as it dies, I check for spark on both sides with a inline spark checker. Both side have good spark. Also replaced the solenoid in the float bowl. The guys before me said he just had the carb cleaned. I wait 10 minutes, and it starts right back up???

    That's great information! Weird problem, but makes sense.

    Actually a diode will conduct in both directions. The band signifies the negative side of the diode... positive current will not flow through the negative side, however negative current will. That’s why diodes are used in a bridge circuit to rectify AC voltage into DC. For lawnmower use, Taryls explanation is fine.

    Rather than buying the Briggs replacement diode harness do you know what generic diode part number would be a suitable replacement for a bad diode?

    If the switch is the on position, not providing a ground to the kill wire, then why is connecting both kill terminals together killing spark? Are they canceling each other out somehow?
