  • In "Taryl Meets Gil The Guitar Player", Taryl troubleshoots what can cause a Briggs & Stratton Twin Cylinder Engine to not run or run poorly. Taryl also covers what Diodes are and how they work as well. Prior to the fix, Taryl deals with local customer Gil The Guitar Player and his nonsensical shenanigans. Another funny and informative how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage! Now There's Your Dinner!!

Out of the blue, my Brigs dropped a cylinder. Must be a shot coil right? Resistance was a bit low so I replaced the coil. No fix and now the "good" cylinder is acting up. Thanks Taryl for pointing me at the diode pack. Never thought of it. But knowing that I always enjoy your videos, I went looking and there you were with a very clear diagnosis. I did not find a reference to the diodes on any of the other small engine channels I checked. Thanks much!

I subbed because of this video. I've got a mower with a Briggs 20hp v-twin & to cut a long story short my issue was the diodes in the kill wire. Ordered some diodes online, made up a new kill wire & now mower is running like a dream. Thanks very much for making this video. Kind Regards from Ireland👍🏼

First time I read about those diodes! I probably lost two weekends on this!!!!!
Now it’s got a rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, re-adjusted valve push rods, new battery, etc.... but... engine would not start even though I could see spark (I don’t have the right tool, so checking for spark with the plug out of the head).
Glad you made this video! Very glad I found it too! :)

After improperly wiring my new solenoid I fried some ground wires (2004 Cub Cadet ZRT 50 w Briggs and Stratton 22HP Intek). I pulled my main wiring harness and repaired/replaced damaged wires but mower would only crank without starting. After a week of checking switches, fuses, coils, spark plugs, etc. and killing battery trying I finally caught this video. Taryl nailed it.
THANK YOU TARYL!!!! I can mow until I get the kill wires fixed. You're a gentleman and a scholar, I owe you a 6 pack of Hamm's.

Thanks for this video. A little story here. I have worked on engines all my life well about 55 years or more. Today was the first time I have trouble with a diode someone gave me a zero turn with a 16hp B & S twin he could not fix. Long story short he replaced the kill wire with one without diodes and this helped me fix this old mower. Thanks

Great Video Guys. I could have use that one a few years ago when I run into my first burnt Diode. Drove me crazy. I knew the Diodes were there just didn't understand how they functioned in the circuit, but knew what diodes did so with some study and some meter work finally figured it out. That's when I knew I needed two spark testers for the Briggs Balance test. Rock On

Thank you very much for your assistance in my briggs & Stratton V twin engine that has two Diles in it one day old was bad I traced it down myself but I also had a friend of mine check the diode‘s with a tester. Now the engine is doing it again it’s it’s shutting off while running and I think it’s somethings getting hot causing it to shut down. So after five or 10 minutes of waiting for it to cool off I can fire it back up again. Thank you and I’ll be keeping you on here. Thank you and God bless you and everyone in your family and everyone that works for you.

*** SPARK TESTER NOTE - See Video: 13:11
I bought these exact spark testers (2), and while they work great, they are poorly made since
the black heat shrink does not hold the glass tube tight, and that flashing element will
    soon break free.
I secured mine with super glue.
At 13:11, I see you secured yours with silicon, and that's a great fix also, probably better.
I noticed over the past 10 years or so, everything I buy needs some little clever fix to keep
it from breaking. International markets (Chinese/foreign) make things cheap for
competitive reasons, which means they are poorly made, but the alert buyer will benefit
from cheaper price by examining the product, and making it better!
    Thanks For Thinking!

Just to clarify, a diode can fail either shorted, where it will read both directions, or it will fail open, meaning you would get no reading in either direction. No offense, taryl, just wanted to add this. Great video, brother.

YES! I spent some time today figuring out what you just explained on my 1996 20hp Briggs IC V-twin I'm resurrecting.
Thanks for reminding me that the gad-frappin' solenoid'll starve it for fuel even if the kill wires are removed. I had forgotten that.
I learned (and your video confirmed) that the bands on the diodes must be on the *coil* side of the kill wire harness, unlike another TH-camr who had them the other way around in his schematic diagram, but came up with a good electrical solution in lieu of new diodes involving a DPDT switch with the coils on one end (electrically separate coil kill circuits controlled mechanically by a single switch) and the other ends of the switch wired together to the single harness kill wire in case your anti-after fire solenoid is buggered open, modded, or deleted.
That way all your safety switches still work.
A quick lookup says they're 1N4007 1000V 1watt diodes for anyone wanting to make their own harness.
You explained their function better than you had to and the 'improper' wiring examples and their associated symptoms really drove the point home.
    Nice work, man!

    • @notajp
      @notajp 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The opposed twin uses a single coil with two wires going to the plugs. It uses “wasted spark”, which means it fires both cylinders at the same time, one at TDC on the compression stroke, while the other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke.

I just bought a used snapper and it’s running intermittently on one cylinder. I just bought two new coils 😫. Hopefully it’s my problem. But if it isn’t I now know to check them stupid diodes. The previous owner had problems with the same thing costing two different shop bills at a cool 2800$. The one coil would shut it off if unplugged. The cap was so rusty I can’t believe the shop missed it and didn’t replace it. I replaced the cap and still running on one cylinder. Glad you explained the problems. I have a plan B now

Is it true that if the diode failed that you should replace the coils because the coils likely caused the diode failure?
And are the knock off coils at half the cost of OEM worth buying, or should one only purchase OEM coils?
I'm dealing with this currently on a 2008 Intek 24hp Husqvarna tractor and not sure if I should replace just the diodes, or replace the coils as well.

  • @andyhamilton8940

Is there a complete coil harness with diodes already installed available?

  • @velvanae
    @velvanae 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a DR chipper that I got for free that has the 16 hp Vanguard twin cyl. Found out one coil was bad and part of the insulation on the kill wire was gone and it was grounding out. I went ahead and ordered two new coils and a kill wire and installed them. It started with starting fluid but did not stay running. So I tore the carbetrator apart and found it full of gunk and had a stuck needle valve. I now have the carbetrator apart and waiting for a new needle valve. Once that comes in everything will be cleaned and put back together and will move on to the next issue. My plan is to fix it a little at a time for a winter project then sell it.

    > a coil either works or it doesn't
That's not necessarily true. I have come across coils that will break down when they get hot and either quit working altogether or they're hit-and-miss.
    > if these diodes are bad, I get a reading both ways
Also, not necessarily true. Diodes can short - meaning that you get a reading both ways - or they can open - meaning that you don't get a reading in either direction. In either case, they would be defective.
As for the video... wow. I must admit it was hilarious! I feel the need to watch more of your antics... I mean, informational videos :)

Yep, coils will sometimes crap out when they get hot, let it cool down, and it runs again. And sometimes are intermittent, but either way, it is time for a new coil.
