    Hi Stu,
    I have that old 1989 Yamaha 50 up and running now thanks to you and your videos. I would not have tackled this sort of thing had it not been for your videos and tutoring.
    The overhaul was extensive and included nearly everything you have covered in your videos but I was confident of success all the way thanks to you.
    I'll buy you that drink or 4 one of these days.
    Many thanks, Bruce.

    I just bought an old 16ft ranger with a johnson 140 seahorse. Engine wasn't running when I purchased it. A carb clean and new jets and she fired right up!!!! Nothing better!!!
    I had the same reaction you did brother!!! Great video!

    Very well done. I've followed this video series since it began and it's great to see this motor brought back to life. The sound of it starting up and running reminded me of my previous Evinrude 115 Ocean Pro of the same vintage. They are great motors.

    • @DangarMarine

    • @peterjensen6844
      @peterjensen6844 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. I mean, this motor is so "de-tuned" by design that its super under powered for its size but it also means that its darn near bullet proof from a reliability standpoint.

    Hello from the USA! Not a "Marine Kind of guy," but used the Rotax 503 two stroke in two of my "Experimental Amateur Built" planes. I have never overhauled my 503's, they ran like hell and were bullet proof! Used good oil mixed 100:1! Can you believe that? Amsoil, and it has, as they say, "High Lubricity." NEVER ran hot. Don't have a plane, at present, but any new one would have Amsoil, for sure. I was very impressed with your work ethic and knowledge. You are one of the few, I'm sure. I'm thinking that you will NOT be paid enough for your efforts - you really put in the time and effort. That, hopefully, was an expensive rebuild. You need to be paid for ALL of the work that you put into that job. Many thanks for positing the video. I also learned from you, just like I do from every GOOD mechanic that I follow. Happy New Year from the State of Virginia. :) M. Donavon, N-6395T (my last homebuilt that I bloody wore out! :) Cheers Mate!

    It's been awhile since I've started a 2-stroke outboard but let me just say when you started that one I actually felt like I could smell the exhaust. It's funny how just seeing and hearing could trigger such a memory. Great job glad to see you did not use the fuel on the boat. A friend of mine lost his brand new engine just because he did not train the old fuel and it was more water then gas and that wash down the cylinders. After 10 minutes on the water the motor locked up. The captain of the towboat was talking to us and the first thing he asked my friend did he drain the fuel and put fresh in and he said no. So the next motor actually was able to go out on its own and return.
    Look forward to your next video.

      You are welcome, but you had everything well in hand...
      I must say, you are more communicative than I am when I get inside a motor. I want NO distractions while I'm working. When I get focused, my wife has learned to "just leave the mad scientist alone."
      "No, I don't want to see my favorite TV show. No, I don't want dinner, No, I'm not hot or tired. No, I'm not ready for bed, although it's 3:00 AM."
      Of course, I don't say this out loud. Out loud I just say, "No, but thank you, honey." And keep on working.
      For this reason, I usually do my best work late in the evening. Often, I'll go all night, get it all done, and fire it up in the morning. I love when I get in the zone like that. Sometimes I get more done during one of those sessions that several normal days.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    THAT ENGINE SOUNDED GREAT!
    It was hitting on all 6 running good.
    Now, install new plugs, wire brush old plugs for spares, install 2 thermostats, install new impeller, have propeller balanced and cupped, install two new sacrificial anodes, rebuild carbs, tune carbs, install new washer on propeller shaft, light sand blast, sand, primer, paint, and decals. And bill for $2,000 bucks for the engine overhaul.

    Good video series Stu, since I'm looking to buy a boat in the future, I like this subject. I'm a big DIYer and would like to buy a boat as a project to save money. I live in Virginia, USA just 20 minutes outside Washington DC, only good part of that is the Chesapeake bay is 40 minutes drive from home. Plan to do a bunch of boating there. Your knowledge is very helpful and educating. Keep up the good work.

      @@DangarMarine I hope you do get there sometime. If you do, hit me up on here I figure with all I've learned from your channel, I owe you a beer and a steak! Seriously. The bay is amazing, I love it almost as much as the Appalachian mountains which run thru VA. If you get out here, you have to see them too, only 1 1/2 hours from the bay and BEAUTIFUL. Fishing is amazing in the bay too, great crabs.

He also sounds like an Aussie.....I was wondering if it is and if the engine failed after all of his vids. It was running great in the vids. Maybe completely different but I was just curious. ps....would love to see a video on the correct way to grease all the fittings on the 150......thanks!

    Nice job. You seemed a bit bummed about deviating from the intended purpose of the video, but there's plenty of videos on how to start a motor that really could be applied to almost any motor. The extra stuff in the video is what was most helpful about it. Plenty of useful info. Plus it IS what you had to do to get it running so, seems as though you stayed on topic to me. Nice work again. I always love to see a engine brought back to life. They really do want to run, it's what they're made for.

    Nice job on rebuild I have found after doing a rebuild for first start up I like to squirt in each carb a shot of a mix of oil and gas in a spray bottle so it fires up faster instead of trying to pull fuel and chancing running dry during cranking and even tho you have a good mix of oil and gas I like to spray fogging oil also to help flush assembly grease out of bearings and seals found some grease doesn't wash out well with fuel

    With the fuel, some of the high octane fuels have a higher density. One manufacturer was claiming that it would improve fuel economy, even if used in an engine designed for lower octane fuels. My wife had one of the first electronic fuel injected BMW's it was from the days of leaded fuels and didn't have an oxygen sensor in the exhaust, therefore it was unable to sense that is was running rich. Wife filled up the car one day with optimax ( I think) and it would hardly start. The problem corrected itself on the next tank of fuel. It was running a bit rich anyway and that fuel made it run very rich. Well done with the rebuild.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alan, interesting to hear about your experience with the high octane fuel. O2 sensors and fuel injection certainly have made a huge difference to a car's ability to dynamically tune itself for the situation.

    Smart one on the octane, those require min 93 octane, blew a piston ring and a power head from running on 86. 1996 150 just like that motor.

    I wasn't sure, but I think your quick start did engage. On my engine it's more noticeable. After the engine warms up the quick start disengages and the engine idle drops and it will sound smooth. I'm looking forward to seeing you tune the carbs. I know my engine needs the carbs tuned. I don't think my mechanic tuned mine right.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, good point about the quick start causing the fast idle and being a bit rough. I need to do a bit of homework now on how those quick starts work as I really aren't familiar with Evinrudes at all. I'm learning a lot from this motor too!

    Sounds great! I'm glad you got help with the hose locations. Oftentimes, those damn plastic fuel bowl mating surfaces warp causing the leakage, not necessarily a gasket problem. The water you saw in the fuel may have been the alcohol/ethanol separating out from the fuel, don't know if you have ethanol/alcohol fuel problems over there like we do here in the US. In any event, this may have lowered the octane of the fuel remaining in the tank, would be best to drain it all out and start fresh with the 50:1 break in mix. Did you set up the timing and do the carb sync? Don't forget, this engine has "quikstart" which advances the timing at dead idle during warm up. Don't forget to check the VRO pulse alarm, what pitch prop is on that boat, seems like a big boat for a 150. You will want to see around 5500RPM at WOT when properly trimmed.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate. I do need to look into how the Quikstart units work, I'm really not familiar with Evinrudes at all. It's got though, it has given me a chance to learn. I think the water in the fuel was definitely from rain, it was too much to be anything else. I agree that cleaning them out and finding the leak is the go. I'll run on the external tank until then. When I showed the outboard to an Evinrude guy he said the timing was set to a pretty safe conservative point but I'll be checking that once we are on the water (presuming a test light doesn't freak out the optical sensor!?!?) Will do the carb sync etc on the trailer before we head out though. Definitely still have a bit to do on this one. Not sure about the prop, I'll check that too. It is a big boat but apparently this motor does push it along quite nicely. I'll see what RPM it reaches when we do the on-water video.

      Sounds good! I read the advice about increasing the size of the high speed jets, which is good advice. But, you have to be very careful when changing those jets, you really should have to OMC jet tool 317002 if you don't already. The darn plastic carbs tend to create plastic debris when removing/installing the jets, which is aggravated even more by trying to use a regular screwdriver for the process. The worst case scenario is plastic debris getting caught in the jet during the process. It is usually best to remove/install jets while the bowls are off the carbs to ensure they are seated correctly and any plastic debris can be seen/removed. The sync process is fairly easy, but make sure the clamps between each throttle plate are tight! The classic fail mode is having the engine loose power after accelerated to WOT only because one throttle plate has crept back to the closed position. I'm just wondering how your dealer friend judged that the timing was set close to spec. Trying to use a timing light on these optical sensor engines will definitely drive the sensor (and you) crazy! The correct Champion plugs MUST be used on these engines, I don't know if NGK actually makes a replacement for the champion "Q" plugs. Using non "inductor" plugs will cause the engine to misfire. This ignition system is very sensitive to RFI interference which can be caused by using the wrong plugs, open plug leads, etc. You have taken great care in doing this rebuild, I'm just trying to think of all these engine's quirks that could cause problems....

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really appreciate your thoughts on this project, I've been learning a lot about Evinrude motors from you and others. I will definitely do the jet swap on the bench as I would like to change the bowl gaskets anyway. I'll be sure to give them a good clean out between removing the old jets and installing the new. Also appreciate the tip about the throttle plate clamps. I'll double check them all so we don't have the problem with them slowly closing on their own accord. Finally, I agree that it is always best to use the exact spark plug the engineers designed the outboard around so I'll get the number from the service manual and order some in. Thanks for all your tips and experience!

    • @thilltony3362
      @thilltony3362 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good advice from Kramden.
      You need Champion #938, also known as QL78YC.
      Alternate is QL77JC4 if the former isn't available.
      If you don't have a jet screwdriver, take a screwdriver over to the grinder, and remove the wider shoulders from the blade, making the width the same as the shaft all the way to the tip, so it's "straight.", then polish off any sharp edges. This way, you can insert the screwdriver down into a hole, and you won't damage anything. A must-have tool.
      Quick start electronically raises the idle at startup, until the motor reaches operating temperature or you rev past 1500 RPM. Good system.
      Those 60 degree motors are powerful. Should push that boat well. 5500 RPM at WOT is what you want.

    You little beauty !!! Hooray ! Never in doubt old mate... Seriously, you have done a great job here and documented the whole journey very well. Great to see these old motors get a new lease on life. These things had a production ran from 1991 - 2000 and the same block was used in the early EFI engines. They certainly stood the test of time.
    Better then spending $20K plus on a new 4 stroke.
    Who did your machine work for you? I have a 225 excel block that needs some TLC and possibly a crack test.

    We had an incident where the boat would not start a new ignition barrow still nothing ended up buying a new Yamaha 703 control box as in gear sensor had broken and few bits looked shabby but still nothing turned out to be the engine fuse. Next day the t n t really broke 😂 two new relays later she's going strong again (1986 Yamaha 2 stroke). Awesome show.
    Maybe you could do a video on dials and how to wire them into control box lol.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that fuse can just stop things in it's tracks and make the problem look worse than it is if you don't know about it. Glad your trim tilt was just relays, problems with the hydraulic side can get expensive fast. Will definitely be doing an instrument video before too much longer.
