    🛑 UPDATE: MG3 is NOT a great choice in 2023 🛑
    This video was recorded in 2022, and back then it looked like "not amazing but good for the price" choice for buyers in Australia. Times have moved on and we are almost in 2024 as I'm updating this description... If you're set on MG, check out my review of MG5, which is not much more expensive, but is DEFINITELY BETTER than MG3....

    Hi Dimitri, I have enjoyed watching your content lately and can see that you are a genuine bloke who's passionate about providing sound advice on cheap and new vehicles. I had an MG3 as a hire car on my holidays up at Byron Bay two years ago & after my drive, I can say I was disappointed. I understand it's a cheap car and provides a compelling price. To its credit, it does seem spacious for a subcompact car, has a nice big infotainment screen & the air conditioning cools down the car well. Not to mention, the dash has an interesting pattern to look at compared to bland black plastic.
    The negative on the MG3 starts from its engine. I get it's not a speedy car, but I felt the power output that the MG3 provides is borderline unacceptable for motorway driving. The performance doesn't help that the four-speed gearbox is so unrefined & you struggle to get it into the correct gear, which results in a rough transition through the gears. I've driven cheap cars from the 80s with better four-speed gearboxes. For whatever reason, it seems like it starts from second gear from a standstill. With the expectation of smooth tarmac roads, the ride of the MG3 is crashy and bouncy. The turning circle is laughable at best (it feels almost as long as my Falcon). The steering wheel didn't seem to feel good in my hands & after a while, my hand started to feel sore. I'm amazed that the infotainment isn't compatible with Android Auto functionality and only has provision for CarPlay, which is ironic as more budget-conscious consumers usually have an Android device.
    However, the biggest disappointment is the massive fuel consumption. I was expecting it to be around seven litres per 100km. However, upon my calculation, my figures were around 10-11 liters per 100km. I believe it's unacceptable for a vehicle of this class to return these results. It hardly any better then my large 20 year old Ford BA Falcon with 550,000km+ on the clock.

      Thanks for sharing your experience mate. I basically struggled to find anything good to say about this car - other than the price back in the day when the video was published... As you can see, I had to update the thumbnail and the title of the video since then, to at least reflect the reality of the modern day a little better. I wouldn't buy it in 2024 and wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Save $5k extra and buy a Haval Jolion they've been just running an EOFY year sale on and you'd be much better off as a new car buyer.

    I have been very happy with my MG3 core for 31/2 years. The car gets me everywhere I want to go, and is easy to park and looks good. The car has a good resale value, I was offered $14,000 for the car 31/4 years after I paid $15,580 for it. The cheaper purchase price paid a part in my being able to retire early, at 61 years old. I was also able to buy a riverview unit, partly because I don't have expensive car repair bills or purchase cost. There are no nasty repair bills, just the yearly service charge of $270. The above review is honest, but the reviewer is a man. Men have egos where cars are concerned. No-one needs an expensive car, only their egos do. I prefer to enjoy my life not working, doing what I want, when I want: and owning a good , basic car.

      I really really want to believe you're a real owner @jane, and I would have preferred if you just kept your comment to your promotional spill for MG (it looks and reads like one, sorry, not many people write like that unless they have an agenda). Keep the men vs women comments out of this, as this gets dangerously personal and will for sure annoy me, and MAY antagonise other people too, which is bad for the brand you're trying to promote in a positive light.

    The feeling of being solid is not just a hunch or imagination.
    The MG3 weighs in at 1170kg! That is a solid little car! It's almost 100kg chunkier than my Swift!
    Or think about this... the first Holden Commodore VB 6-cylinder manual weighed 1230kg - that's only 'one passenger' more than the MG3!
    Some little cars creak and squeak when you turn across deep gutters or angle onto steep driveways - but not the MG3!
    You are getting a lot of car and a surprising amount of metal for your money.

    • @ValueCarsAU

      I disagree. This night have been true in 2022, and if you judge the worth of a light passenger car by weight 😁 but if you look at the whole picture and the alternatives you can get in 2023, MG3 proposition is just not holding up.

    Writing a car off for not having an ANCAP rating or a bad one in 2023; is pretty much the same as saying a used car made before 2018 is buying a death trap and you will be turned into jelly if you hit a stop sign. The crux of the issue, the shred of good faith Ancap has operated under in the last decade (given auto engineers made lunar mission improvements from 1980-2010) is massive utes becoming more and more normal in Australia. And when you are in a small car there is only so much you can do to fight physics without throwing any regards to efficiency out the window.

      Fair points. But not having ANCAP rating as a small car while other (many!) small cars do - under the same road conditions and crazy Ute drivers all around - is a rather lame excuse.

Yes it's new, yes it's warranty etc, but it doesn't offer a particularly enjoyable drive, so I would look at used cars with very low kms on the clock, as I don't know if you'll be happy with MG3 long term. The current model MG3 with the four speed automatic transmission is rather sluggish and feels as if it lacks power. The original MG3s imported had a five speed manual transmission and were quite nippy both in traffic and on the open road. Unfortunately these days people are too lazy to change gears thus prefer the automatics. Interestingly, in the UK all MG models are sold with manual transmission with an automatic option.

    • @ValueCarsAU

    everyone out there truly hates this car and i get that.. but at its heart this car is over a decade old and so it has all the bones of a decade old car... it has old hydraulic steering...in the UK its manual only and it has a good reputation. For 2023 here it moves to a CVT which will be a good match to the PFI 1.5 four. For $20k AUD you really dont get anything from the Koreans and Japanese and so really all you get is a 10yr old Chinese car with updates to make it saleable in 2023. For some it may be better to stretch to $25k for a base Korean car?

    This car is a deathtrap. This is how carsguide reviews it;
    Safety technology is the MG3’s biggest shortfall. There’s no ANCAP crash test safety rating to speak of, and the MG3 doesn’t come with any form of auto emergency braking (AEB), which is disappointing given the tech has been available on affordable city cars since 2013 (the VW up! was an early benchmark).
    No one should be buying or driving one of these abominations.
    Save your money and buy one of the good, safe MGs.
    You should not comment on why the MG3 has no ANCAP rating. The fact it doesn't have one shows the manufacturer cannot be bothered spending money on an end of run model. This shows how bad Australian laws are, dangerous cars like this should not be allowed on the road in 2022.

    • @ValueCarsAU
      @ValueCarsAU  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm just expressing my findings and at least am honest about what I heard. No ANCAP rating - as I was told. People can make their own decisions. I've seen cars smashed to bits with 5 star ANCAP. I personally always look at the basics, rather than what an external agency told us. E.g. I bought a Jeep Wrangler and loved it for 3 years until I sold it (due to completely other reasons) completely not caring about it's brutal ANCAP and "deathdrap" reviews. Roll cage and tank feel for the win. 🤷‍♂️
