MG didn't want us to review the MG5 - but why?..
No seriously, why? This thing is awesome! You get a fully loaded small sedan with a 7 year unlimited kilometer warranty, and surprising performance to boot. Well, its most likely because the MG5 misses out on some of the latest Active Safety Technology that would award it 5 stars. But considering it still has the passive safety technology (i.e. full suite of airbags, crash modelling, etc.) we can overlook that at it's CHEAP pricepoint! Let's talk about one of Australia's cheapest new cars in today's review!

@@tonikaku433 I just bought a 2024 MG5 Essence and it *not* having those features was it's biggest bonus over every other sedan (also being $20k cheaper). My work vehicle has all that crap, driving down a windy road with proximity alarms constantly going off while your brakes are primed to give you whiplash at the slightest touch is a special kind of hell.

well i splashed out back in September 2023 paid under $30,000 for the turbo both me and my wife cant fault the car one bit. i agree with the review its a good car for the money i am getting on a run 5.4lit to 100km so the fuel use is very good. i would have no problem at all getting another one of these. if you can drive you should not need all the new safety features you break when you need to and use your own eyes for traffic around you

A lot of the time these passive safety systems respond sooner than required to allow for driver correction and are therefore annoyingly obtrusive and get switched off, making them a redundant feature. The costs involved in these systems are better used in increasing occupant safety, rather than the spec sheet.

Loved it to the maximum, only complaint is the weird cruise control knob, like..... the positioning dont make sense to me at all and the increase/decrease is difficult when driving. but the digital interiors and no dials at all is a huge selling point compared to its competitors who are still using dials

The MG5 Scorpio is basically a facelift model and if they bring it to Australia it'll be a big seller. It's technically a sportier variant with 135kw tune. It also looks like they've upgrade the interior significantly with switchgear from the MG4 EV. Plus it has MG Pilot. Even if it were slightly more expensive I think it'd be a hit. They've got a walkthrough here: th-cam.com/video/AoRKXS_U904/w-d-xo.html

I did a test drive the lower grade but almost similar. That was so comfortable. But 2 problems. One the signal handle was on the left side not right, like ford cars, that made me frustrated every time instead of signal I turn wipers on. The second problem was the location of the air vent in the middle of the car that was so low and for a tall driver like me with 190cm my knee was freezing. That was a deal breaker for me. But I totally liked the drive and I think it is worth buying it.

It brought back PTSD of driving with my parents in the car panicking that we were going to hit something! I've had it trigger because of parked cars sticking out alittle too much, motorbike food delivery guys cutting in front of me and a speed hump in a shopping centre with reflective paint!!?? Wtf! I usually have whinges about most cars in reviews. But this is truly a goldilocks car, even has an electric driver’s seat and I can check the tyre pressure. What is the aircon like.. I like if it gets really cold when you adjust it for that, and is the fan at high speed too noisy and feel elcheapo ?. Does it alert you when to top up the wipers reservoir.😊

I drove one for two weeks. It was a rental with less than 20k km. It was absolutely the worst POS I have driven in my life. I have owned over 30 vehicles since 1984, and this one is the worst. Absolutely terrible transmission. The throttle response is also terrible. It's either all or nothing. If you want to accelerate to pass another car, nothing happens for at least a second before the car starts to accelerate. It's just plain dangerous. It is supposed to be Chinese luxury with leather seats, but everything else is hard plastic. It rattles and squeaks worse than a cheap subcompact with 100k miles.

If you build a very good car to a very competitive price you have to save on something and losing the modern active "safety" features is a good idea. I already have many active features: multidirectional viewing system with a backup, stabilised omni-directional head, all-round sound sensing system with back-up, a pair of pedal actuators, a pair of steering and control input devices and to co-ordinate all of these devices, a hugely powerful central computer. This amazing system is available 24/365 but works best with 7 hours of standby time/day.
PS. With the money they save on irrelevant devices, can they please put in a bigger rear window. It looks effin' stupid. Oh, another thing, massive boot my arse. Get 440li in a Mazda 2 sedan!!

It looks good with a roomy body and strong, punchy turbo performance on the road. The dynamics are well sorted too.
But most of these will spend a lot of there time around town and the turbo lag and hesitant DCT would quickly become annoying.
The lack of physical buttons for the ventilation controls and the lack of the most basic active safety tech is a big thumbs down from me.
The cheaper MG 5 Vibe model is absolute gutless with it's carry over MG 3 engine and transmission and takes over 14 seconds to reach100 kmh
This is more of nitpicking issue but the slimline number plate exposes the number plate holder directly underneath it on this test car.

There are two common beliefs about car safety/1 Bigger cars are safer, 2 Newer generation cars, even if affordable, are safer than older, expensive cars. When you see comments about choosing an older, 100,000-kilometer Japanese car for your child's first car instead of a newer, larger one, are you serious?

    • @jeeves6490
      @jeeves6490 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

When I learnt to drive, cars had cross-ply tyres, drum brakes without any power assistance and only very expensive cars had any form of power steering, and if performance was your thing you avoided power steer, it cost too much hp.
Air bags have pretty much negated the advantage of size, and anything more than abs is just gilding the lily.
The most important safety equipment in the car is the driver's brain, and so much of the modern safety technology seems to remove the use of that brain.
