- What even is the story of the Digimon Adventure: 2020 Reboot / Remake? This is a re-edited breakout from my Episode 65 review where I explain the lore and plot of the show as we understand it! I was sad that this explainer was buried in an episode review and wanted an easier way for people searching for answers on the plot to find my explanation.

It's similar to OG's case, back then villains like Devimon, Myotismon, and Dark Masters just appeared out of nowhere, and the series explained their source and creator at very end, which is Apocalymon.
This was definitely an interesting plot. While we had other similar things based on negative emotions like Apocalymon and D-Reaper, the fact that internet is being involved with the plot makes a cool and unique idea. Even though it felt it took a long time to know what's happening, glad that we know the lore and story of Digimon 2020.
This was really well done dude! Short but very sweet and I think this will help a lot of people who were confused about the plot of 2020!

Shhhh we don't talk about Leomon. Because if we do the writers might remember they haven't killed him off yet.
I never been more happy that leomon will survive in end over the years I grew sick and tired of him seeing die anytime he appeared I really love leomon he was one of my favorite digimon since growing up i wished he would be recurring and important character in the series by exploring and developing him I hated how they mistreated him and wasted his potential relevance and role by making him a joke of series and making his death a running gag and tradition that detrimental to his character but now in reboot this had finally break the curse and tradition of him being dying by making him still alive in the end of the series which make me more happy as Leomon fan

I actually like the concept of the Digital World being at war with itself with wanting to die and live at the same time. Plus, the commentary on the negative side of the Internet was also interesting.

Essentially, Negamon is this series' Apocalymon.
It created Devimon, Milleniumon, and SkullKnightmon as the new Dark Masters because it was imprisoned between the two worlds. This meant it was questing for power by giving them power as well. Huh.
For me, digimon series has evolve further, from talking about family problems in 1999, to talking about the problems in the network(Internet) in 2020
I think you meant devolving from a show that actually knew how to write deep characterization to a kids show that brought human's negativity and network problem theme out of nowhere for the sake of making it look deep on the surface.

Honestly I've just been enjoying the ride, seeing new takes on digimon like Etemon or Gravimon, meeting digimon I've never seen before like Burpmon, seeing the new digimon like Junkmon.
5:10 Yeah and it only took the show spelling it out for us at the last second to try and convince us that that’s what the commentary was the whole time and not that the writers had no idea what they were doing. XD

i think you missed eyesmon was also created by Negamon to "replace" Algomon since his egg came from Negamon orb as well.
But a bummer they haven't made human world side episodes besides early part of the show.
I wish they remade the original and sat down, this reboot is hot air with better animation .. Negamon and its story seems to be just an afterthought when writers didn't know where to go. and what is worse to me is how they treated the angel digimons, I mean they promoted them as the saviors of the digital world for them to end up cheerleaders with the rest of the Mega. This reboot made me appreciate how amazing the OG 1999 was, that for Holyangemon to come out the world was falling apart literally in the hands of Piedmon and he was the last hope, then how their unity and bond with their digimon caused them to defeat Apocalymon.
Edit to further clarify my point:
You know guys the original has this thing where things connect and feel coherent, payoff is way better and the drama is real, kids aren't emotionless robots like in the reboot. The original had personal issues introduced to each character with them actually missing home when lost in the Digital World.
Then all the evil digimons in the original had personality and they speak, they have plans and dreams.
To clarify the point about the angels, although they treated Angemon at the beginning as the messiah in the 2020 one, they lost the tone midseason and just shelved him as a normal digimon. heck in the OG he held his own against piedmon, even was a pain in the arse for Myotismon. The power was shown in ACTION not in useless dialogues. And every time an angel will appear the music will shift and they make you realise a miracle is about to unfold whenever Patamon or Gatomon decided to digivolve.
Then comes the first appearances, Lets start with Angemon, his debut in the 1999 was so iconic it is still a subject of discussion in the community even for today, Angewomon debut made everyone cry and it is unforgettable. Holyangemon debut literally saved everyone, it was something grand and made a difference. Although they rarely appeared but their appearance made a huge impact.
Taichi and Yamato were the heroes of 1999 and they deserved to be and didn't feel forced and unlikeable like 2020 Taichi.
The dark masters and Apocalymon did sort of appear out of nowhere though.
Algomon/negamon have been in all the important parts apart from millenniumon's resurrection.
That's the part that feels wedged in too me. If it went straight to the Great Catastrophe after Nidhogmon the story might have felt smoother.
Yeah, the final villain is better
That is nostalgia talking, the angels in the original did very little as well, Holyangemon didn't do much either outside his debut, and how MetalGarurumon and WarGreymon weren't capable of beating Piedmon was just arbitrary to pad runtime, Apocalymon also fell in the same way Millenniumon did.
The overall plot structure of the original though is for sure thousand times better, the plot gets developed every few episodes with pay off and progression, the kids have much better development there too.
But Reboot does it own good things too, the kids are more likeable right away, the episodic stories are way better and more entertaining, those in between episodes in the OG were either boring or annoying because there were interrupting the plot and most of the time didn't provide much of anything.
A perfect Adventure should mix the good plot and development of the original, with the good elements of the reboot.

It was the over use of Tai for me. The positive I took out of this reboot was how they did TK, Kairi and Mimi. They were so awesome in this series

I really didn’t know what the plot was of Digimon 2020 until episode 65, I wish they did this type of episode like 10 episodes, so like we as viewers aren’t in denial as to what is happening. But so so excited for the fínale episodes, I hope they’re animated like the first 3 episodes (and may Leomon please not die 🥺) or even if he died, he better die at the very end helping the Digi-destined

This plot point really is interesting. It puts more focus on the fact the the digital world, in it's own way, is 'alive'. And it just reached a point where the Will to Live and the perceptions of Purpose of Living needed an opinion not it's own. And honestly, it's close hitting. We know there are many people who get depressed because of the negativity they are exposed to on the net (or just from people in life in general).
Unlike the D-Reaper that wanted to destroy everything because that's it's purpose, Negamon both has decided to end everything because of the negativity it found, but also, like a troll, relishes in all the negative energy to the point where it's twisted it's original outlook and just want to end it all while getting the most pleasure/satisfaction from suffering it can.

I'd say the first part of Xros Wars/fusions is more family friendly. I haven't watched the in Japanese so I'm not sure about plot and dialogue but compared to 2020 the action and horror is less intense.

The plot is really interesting and complex, though I’m bummed there is no 02 reboot. I would’ve believe another villain would come to rule the digital world which is the Digimon emperor as Meiko this time and some great evil manipulated her. Not Malomyotismon, but a being that seeks chaos
The story is still pretty badly written and there are moments that make no sense

So the flashback at the start, was the previous lifes of the choosen's Digimon?
I asked for a multi verse for digimon, so I guess this kinda of that.... I still have issues with the series overall because this could have been explained throughout the show

This show had a plot?
As far as I could see it just boiled down to Taichi and some tagalongs wandering aimlessly around fighting big mindless beasts, and then effortlessly defeating them with more powerful attacks. Oh and some tacked on concept about a villain being above good and evil, despite the fact all its underlings have been evil Digimon.

I wonder if the Internet negativity that Negamon feeds came from negative words or negative implications? I mean you can say negative words like "you suck" to your friends online with no malicious intent but you can also say nice comments sarcastically full of negativity.
IMO, if they explained and sprinkled it all over the series then it'll be a much better show as Negamon's plot line became kinda flat when you just blanket the word "negative" to such a broad environment like the internet.
Spend five minutes on any social media platform and you'll see it is filled with genuine deep hatred towards anyone and anything.
The Internet barely even explored in the actual show lol. The human characters are also just bland superheroes. This human's negative activity origin really just came out of nowhere and flat.

Personally I think that the plot point about Negamon finding negative energy inside of the human internet was really lazy and overdone by this point, all it said was “internet bad” and left it at that, not elaborating on it any further, Digimon is wonderful because it can tell people stories and teach lessons that only they could, this season was very bad at doing that, only ever reaching a surface level of depth with any theme they try to tackle

But i disliked the reboot. It was not clear at all until few last episodes.
I think its cool what they are doing with it being about if the digital world should continue or not, and how negatively is a big problem online in the real world.
However I don’t think they earn it. Maybe if we would have gone back to the real world for a few episodes and saw the negativity online it would hit more effectively. Instead it feels like a last minute inclusion.
In summary I like the idea dislike the execution.

It's good that they have these themes. It sets the show up better than many. Still in the long run kind of mediocre. In the end it's still just negative emotions vs the purity of children. They could have gone about this better.
The death, Digimon usually don't get, is: Dying of old age.
While I really didn't like Adventure 2020, the lore is interesting.
Why oh why they had to reboot it ... simply ad to it, it's not like the og felt ... shallow as if episodes were missing (watched it again over the last 2 weeks)

This has got to be the weakest shit I’ve ever seen from an anime or any media ever. XD
This Negamon's origin feels like a poor attempt to make the story deep and give meta commentary about Internet.
The guy was created from negative stuffs in human's internet, but then for 60+ episodes prior we never saw any of this. We never really saw human's activity, and the kids are just bland superheroes without any negative traits. It's all about just brainless evil Digimon doing evil stuff while the human world is straight up just a victim, so this negative emotion theme about humans straight up came out of nowhere to make Negamon "deep and gray".
Also, Algomon's monotone monologue when explaining these was just boring, and the kids barely even responded to him aside from Mimi and Joe being aware that it's weird. The writers didn't even try to connect its origin to the personal story of the characters lol, really shows that its just the show wanting to make meta commentary for commentary's sake instead of telling an actual story.

I think this is standard meta annalist of the internet and will only work if they use the internet for good. IE the internet like anything is what you make of it.
Otherwise it's a bunch of old fart writers and producers trying to make useless commentary on something they themselves don't understand.
