Felt its a Deja vu moment when Biyomon said to Sora: "Why couldn't you understand me?" She once said exact words during the fight with Myotismon in OG, that was also when Sora learns the true meaning of love. And its really nice to see her mega form took place in Valcano this time, better than last time in ice berg.
I loved this episode. Sora’s my favourite. She was the first TV character I remember really loving. I watched the original series back in the day when I was a kid but I also stopped watching when I was a kid around the time Tamers was on. I think purely because I missed too many episodes and it was pretty much impossible to catch up on what you missed in the late 90s. I remember in the UK they also never showed the original series once Tamers was on so I just gradually stopped watching Digimon. I always wanted to rewatch at some point as I remembered how much I loved her and Biyomon. I remember forgetting their names due to how much time had passed as well and just remembered them as ‘the girl’ and ‘the bird’. I remember my old garden centre had a Biyomon plushy on one of the tills for years and I remember always wanting it, as even though I could only remember bits of the show at that point and had forgotten all of the characters names (and some of the characters at that point as well) I remembered that ‘the bird’ was my favourite Digimon. I finally rediscovered the show a few years ago and remember watching the bits I could remember as a kid as there were certain clips or episodes I still remembered vividly (I remember being scared of skull greymon and i remember the episode where Kari was revealed as the 8th kid and rushing home from school to watch). I fell in love with Sora and Biyomon again (I even bought my own Biyomon plush!) It was so great to finally see Piyomon’s complete evolution line, especially in the original animation style as I really hated the Tri animation style. Anyway that was an unnecessarily long comment about why I loved this episode so much!

I had a similar trajectory with Digimon originally, I made it to season 4 but you’re right it became increasingly difficult to watch it even if I wanted to because of the TV scheduling! I don’t have strong enough evidence but I’ve always been interesting in researching a video that tries to argue Digimon losing popularity in the west was the TV station’s fault, not the fans disinterest 🤔
Considering pheonixmon is a holy bird digimon, the pasts shows could’ve given hints on a third holy digimon but haven’t done so, so I think they’ll be treating pheonixmon like any other mega. It would be great though if pheonixmon get the form of valdurmon. But chances in that happening are very low.
Solid episode, however I would be lying if I wasn't slightly disappointed that next week seems to be another hard left turn for the Mega evolutions. I really, really just want to see HerculesKabuterimon v GranKuwagamon
I'm hoping phoenixmon is treated like a holy digimon more in the sense that it's one of the most powerful "common" megas before you reach the truly divine like patamon and gatomons lines. The other lines have megas that are rare but known of even wargreymon and metalgarurumon but pheonix is the most powerful bird and/or holy digimon the common digimon could hope it see. Remember valdrumon, the bird who used the last of its power to tell the digidestine about the holy war is a holy digimon that phoenix digivolves into. So while not on any of gatomons or patamons megas levels phoenixmon is a powerhouse of a holy digimon.

To call phoenixmon below the holy angels? No no no. I don't find wargreymon and especially Metalgarrurumon stronger than the rest of the mega Like hell no. It has already been proven year after year in many digimon shows. That the angels are only strong against DARK TYPE digimons but they are ok when up against other types. Proven by angewomon celestial arrow unable to do anything on zudomons hammer but power it up on episode 38 or 39? In digimon tri ( herculeskabuterimons debut) both infected angemonn and angewomon were unable to defeat kabuterimon. Their attacks were ineffective against kabuterimon. Until an infected togemon shoots her needle spray at kabuterimon. So No. To call Phoenixmon and the other megalevels lower than wargreymon and the angels. It's not. They are all in the same level. If bancho lillymon appears that puts her at a high tier mega level. Coz all banchos are legendary and high tier. They are like the dark gangsters of the digimon world. In the digipedia. Wargreymon is a warrior but the rest are KINGS rosemon queen of the flowering plants Phoenixmon holy fire digimon, king of the sky Herculeskabuterimon king of the insects Ps: wargreymon is depicted as powerful OP mega level that's coz he is the main character. Vs natural disasters should be used more often. One of my favorite episodes of Frontier is when Tsunomon needs to evolve to Gabumon to save the school from the flood.
In this episode sora and piyomon learn to understand each other not from their own perspective, but from each other perspective. And the very cool thing is somehow hououmon is able to control and stop the lava, it's just amazing even without a fight.
I’m just hoping there would be a better sequence evolution for hououmon. I can understand why garudamon and the other perfect level digimon got satisfactory evolution sequences but hououmon is a mega level digimon like metalgarurumon and wargreymon, their evolution sequence had much better animation and had them looking up to their crests, which were cool and I was hoping they implemented it into hououmon’s but I guess I’m wishing for too much, smh.
Okay! SO! The bird Digimon Taichi and Sora talk to in episode 5 is Vauldormon. An Ultra Evolution of Houhoumon. So Houhoumon may be treated as a holy Digimon in this series.
The only reason why I accepted the events of this episode was because you have to trust each other first in order to love each other.. And in the subs you see it turned from not being able to trust each other to finally admitting there's love between them.. That was great.. But it wasn't apperent enough
My theory they need to learn the FULL definition of their crest before they can obtain their crest. The more generic views of their crest allowed them to reach their champion and ultimate forms, but to reach mega the kids need to learn the real definition of their crest of that emotion. The 5 that have been unlocked so far are "easy" for children to grasp compared to the 3 still needing to be unlocked. I also think its why in Tri it took them being adults to reach their megas, as they better understood the emotions. Tai like i think digiknow and others already said a few videos back is unable to collect his crest as it acts as the final key and they need the other kids to be ready before his becomes active.
I still have a problem with Sora's characterization - I mean, I'm really glad that we got a Sora-centric episode and I like that we got see another approach to love. But honestly? We still know nothing about Sora - and we know more about each other character, which does put me off a bit. I do look forward to Kabukimon and I also look forward to seeing which Digimon will evolve into them.

People say this episode is very similar to episode 25 in Digimon Adventures back 1999. It's similar, but I think the message is slightly different: In the OG series, Sora's mother was very strict person, even making Sora fells upset for not allows her to plays soccer, and Sora learned that her mother just does it because she loves her. Now Sora was acting overprotective to Piyomon like her mother was in the OG series, but she understand that love is not only about security or protect the ones you love, but also about trust one another. Personally, I like the reboot most, since I think Toei messed up with the original Sora. I apologize for any mistakes in my English. English is not my native language.
I don't know how far they will go with soras evo of biyomon but I do know their is a for past phoeniexmon that is 1/2 of omnimon type lifeform in my game and reference book and most don't reach perfect without jogress or fusion
I love the concept of this episode. This is literally the ONLY episode that didn't involve fighting an enemy digimon but actually a natural disaster instead. Very unique challenge for Sora and Biyomon. I like the fact that Sora and Tai spent much of this episode helping out Junkmon and his friends to build the wall against the impending eruption too. Sora's conflict with Biyomon was good but I feel like this should've happened before and that again is due to how little development she got throughout the series. Hence why I feel like Phoenixmon's debut felt a little bit flat. Her actual moment was fantastic though by drawing out the lava and turning into a large tower of magma instead, furthermore showing off her powers as a holy digimon by healing Junkmon at the end too. Her evolution sequence though was a big step up over Tri's. So overall, a good but not great episode.
Yeah if they planted some seeds of Piyomon doubting Sora or growing frustrated with Sora before this it would have been that much stronger! But definitely a strong episode and the natural disaster as the enemy really helps diversify the mega debuts!
Hot take: I way preferred her evolution/appearance in Tri than here. Yeah the evolutions weren't super flashy in Tri or anything but it was CONSISTENT. All characters got the same thing. It's such a huge annoyance to me that Tai and Matt get these awesome mega digivolution sequences and the other characters will just never get them.
I agree with you, and I am thinking about the possibility that the great catastrophe indicates the environmental disaster in the digimon world rather than any enemy digimon.
I thought phonenixmon fighting the volcano was better than the enemy. Nature is beautiful but also causes the most damage to us in the real world. I also love how we got to see that phoenixmon does have healing abilities to go with being a holy digimon when the cuts on junkmon were healed.
So, I'm rather disappointed you didn't comment on it, but this ENTIRE situation with Sora and Piyomon was a reversal of Sora's original character arc from the first Adventure, where she had a big fight with her mom for this EXACT reason, though with her ankle being what was hurt. As I recall, overcoming that was also what was needed to make the Crest of Love shine.

And it's a very powerful holy digimon. In the original, when Birdramon evolved to Garudamon, it shined really bright and its light really affected Myotismon. But it never seemed to be as strong as the angels.
Probably an unpopular opinion but I love the more action of this compared to the original adventure. I don’t mind character development not being as focused on. but with that said, I love seeing the characters working to save the digital world outside of fighting

I don't know how I feel about Garudamon and Sora just chilling in lava before the evolution scene. The whole thing about the Partners riding on their digimon has been a bit messy all along I.e. Garudamon bursting into flames with Sora on her back while doing Shadow Wing attack, Tai on Metalgreymon while he does his spin attack etc. I had kind of assuming that the digimon could control their own attacks to not affect their partners but since the lava is an external thing and still didn't affect Sora kinda took me out of the moment idk
The OG digimon made more sense in thay part. Like lilymon throw mimi when she's about to use flower canon, also Garudamon put sora on other digimon when she use her shadow wing 😂

Yes and no. I would say that the Hou-ou/Fenghuang is more like the eastern equivalent to a Pheonix rather than being the same exact thing. They are close enough mythology both being mythical birds with a fire assosation. Actually, they didn't intend to land on the volcano island. They were brought down by the volcano itself. Meeting the inhabitants of the island and seeing why they are staying, they decided to help out.
Maybe Phoenixmon will become the new unknown bird digimon that we saw early on in the show? I also wonder if the digimon partners will be given roles at the end of the show when “the world is saved”. Like patamon and gatomon can become guardians with biyomon, palming could decide to work in the digi-school, tentomom in the tree of knowledge, Gina mom could become something like a peacekeeper, … And I have no clue where agumom and gabumon could do😅
They clearly were going for a similar crest of love theme as the 90s series but the fact that we didn't get a flash back of Sora's life with her mom made it weaker. In the 90s series Sora thought she would never understand her crest but then realized that her protective nature toward pyomon was mimicking how her mom treats her and that it was all out of love.
I got brain-damaged by doing that "hitting my head with my fist" thing the same time they did it in the show. Now I have a headache. Au! Overall, the episode was surprisingly good, if we talk about the first 15 min. Then we got the evolution scene and the outcome of the episode. This is a very subjective opinion, but seeing that the evolution scene of Hououmon isn't the same level with animation as Wargreymon or Metalgarurumon and scene has more same with Perfect level evolution scene. I would like to know why did "show writers" decide to make this decision. I hope that it's not because of a lack of money. Any reason it is, it bothers me largely. Another "problem" or more like lack of my own knowledge is that can someone explain how Hououmon was able to lift the magma/lava and make that crystal pilar at end of the episode. I tried looking for any information related to this ability but found nothing. So was this new ability, old ability, or just a poorly done plot device to get rid of the lava/magma?
In regards to the last point I think that they were drawing on the fact that Piyomon and its evolutions have always been able to produce/control fire. So her final form being powerful enough to lift all of the lava into the air and create a crystal pillar is kind of a way of showing that now even without using any attacks they're powerful enough to do that and make sure everyone is safe.
Next week as someone who pays attention to everything said on the previews, they are dealing with the Lord of the hot spring. Apparently some digimon bought the place and turned it into your Japanese style hot spring resort and the Lord who now owns the place is denying free entry. I surmise Kabukimon works for that Lord so I say Joe is going up against an enemy Armor Evolution. BTW, I was reading comments and one of them pointed out Taichi's compass is leading him everywhere is because courage was the easiest of the eight to achieve. I was thinking because the meaning of courage is everywhere so Taichi and Agumon's journey will be seeing what courage is like from his friends. Basically he and Agumon are going to be witnesses to all of the mega evolutions.
Already know I'll love the next episode simply cuz of Gatomon referring to Joe as "leader" and all the Gomamon x ShogunGekomon shenanigans. The surprise armor evolution is a bonus

I think this episode should have been two, the first half felt like a filler episode and the conflict to resolution lasted all of 5 minutes. As for is this the best Sora episode I would have to say I kind of prefer the last Sora-focused episode 40, because it felt like she was taking a more proactive role in that episode.
I would like Phenixmon to be treated as a holy Digimon...maybe Lopmon is about to die in the final few eps and gives it's holy power to Phenixmon, but I don't think it will happen as Pheonixmon was in the war picture back in the early eps(the 1 that conformed yeah everyone is getting mega). I did enjoy this ep and it was a cool way to show love, that trust is needed. As for the preview, I do think it's Joe getting that armor from Gatomon like how Patamon was accidentally the cause of Mimi's armor form. As a side note I believe in matt's ep that's when he'll get Cresgarurumon so his ep is still special, but who knows.
I think the episode does nod to Hououmon’s status as a holy digimon when it heals everyone’s wounds while shining a brilliant light down. I don’t think they’ll develop it much further than that but it was nice to see
You are always impressed with every episode! they did not even show a full evolution sequence for Hououmon! what a disaster .. and Taishi and his pet dragon got full sequences for their basic dinosaur evolutions
I think people need to accept that Taichi and Yamato have been getting preferential treatment since 1999. Yes I would like full evolution sequences for every character but it's been clear since episode 4 that wasn't going to happen. I'm not going to say the same complaint week over week for 50+ weeks because they are still not giving full evolutions. That doesn't make or break the show for me. Cheers!

It is interesting with the evolutions. There's so much mystery to the parts we thought we knew back in the day but now there's just more mystery of how it works. Not only that but now they have slide evolution? So instead of going down one line of evolution we are now exploring many possibilities? they meant that finding the physical crest isn’t what triggered the evolution which is what a lot of people that would happen. i mean they’re all heading in different directions to find their crests and lots of people assumed that it was so they could reach their mega forms.
Even though (like always *sigh) the digivolution scene was a bit of meh, those Stardust Explosion moves was sooo beautiful! I even repeated it 5 times! Love it! She definitely earned those specification as a Holy Beast digimon, she could change a disastrous event into something ethereal.. And Hououmon main tribute was healing, so.. yes, no fighting!
Given the focus on the Holy Rings and the “holy Digimon” music cues, I think this series is respecting (ホウオウモン) Hououmon’s status as a holy Digimon. The difference is that Patamon and Gatomon are already holy Digimon and evolve into holy Digimon in all their states whereas Piyomon does not. Also, Kabukimon comes from Mimi’s crest, not Joe’s.
Very curious what the Crests will actually be for, since it's now completely confirmed they don't unlock a new evolution. As for Hououmon, I don't think she'll be treated as being on the same level as the Holy Digimon, but they are leaning into its holy power a lot more than Adventure Tri did (i.e. not at all). Patamon and Tailmon obviously aren't the only Digimon with holy power, they're just the big hitters, the real deal. So if they choose to go into it, we'll probably just have some explanation of the holy rings and lower-tier holy Digimon.
The only non evil for lopmon was fusion and instead he just turned white and died less than two minutes later without even fighting! So that’s worse in my book!
@@BuddyC99 I’m not even kidding! It formed inside neomyotismon with Omnishoutmon and ZekeGreymon. Neomyotismon grabs the latter two. Lopmon then goes like “with the last of my power, I can combine your power.” And I was floored! I was literally thinking, “the last of your power?! YOU HAVENT DONE ANYTHING!” They really hate lopmon! And give terriermon the goods. The best lopmon got was tamers and even then he/she was useless in the runaway locomon movie
But the Phoenixmon didn’t do much in this episode, I mean it did stop the eruption forever, but what have it done? What’s the power it used? What happened at all?

I never thought the crests were for mega, cause of tai and matt. But Im kinda hoping that there will be another evolution for them that comes through understanding the crests and unlocking their full power. Also the fact that they actually showcased the rings, makes it seem to me that indeed they want to highlight Houhoumon's Holy digimon status. And this might be fully explained on the crest adventure. And i do think they are treating her as a Holy digimon because this entire scene from the light to the sparkles/glitter was similar to the other holy digimon. Its possible and I hope they do go in on this and explain, I don't think there is anything wrong stating that Houhoumon preferred to exist in the digirealm and not the angelic one despite being a Holy digimon. It's a possibility. I would also love if there was a link between Houhou and Valdurmon mentioned aswell.

Gatomon is already at Champion level although Salamon is never shown to evolve. If there is a 02 reboot Gatomon needs to devolve for the Nefertimon armor evolution to make sense and for Gatomon to be treated as a real Champion. So all bets are on Gomamon.
I knew it .. chapter 52: beautiful (he is in charge of the person who made saint seiya first season and all sainthia sho) Chapter 53: I do not know the works that the person in charge of this chapter did ... it would seem curious to me Chapter 54: who did not Valkyrie will be in charge ... the chapter will be amazing Chapter 55: hype 1000 will be in charge of who made the dbz broly last and will also be in charge of the person who made most of the digimon franchises (lots of references to the history of all digimon and very good fights)
It's interesting that we have had megas even without the crests, which the crests themselves were physical embodiments of every characters best quality, i really do wonder how they will implement them

If you think about it, reversing a natural disaster is exactly the kind of power a Mega Digimon should have. The power of love is so strong that not even an angry volcano can compare. I like that.
Yeah! I really like that not every Mega debut is just a power showcase. WarGreymon was that, but then MetalGarurumon was the race and a show of friendship, and Hououmon was stopping a natural disaster and a show of love between partners!
The episode's biggest problem I have is that Sora is so passive in terms of her reaction to others. Her reaction to Pyiomon telling her she hated her when she said a stupid thing, that she realized was a stupid thing wasn't to apologize profusely or trying to clarify, but stunned silence. And even after the initial shock, sora doesn't pursue Pyiomon to make up with her, and even when they meet later in the episode it is Pyiomon that apologizes when Pyiomon wasn't at fault. Sora was insensitive. Pyiomon overreacted for sure. But I am very disappointed that Sora showed so little care for Pyiomon. Not to mention that whole swimming in lava business was fucking stupid. Just in general the lack of care between Sora and Pyiomon was brought into sharp focus by this episode. We saw them work together once. We saw more Tai and Agumon synergy in this episode than Sora and Pyiomon. And even after their conflict is resolved, we see nothing in terms of interaction that would give the impression that they share a special bond and no amount of flashing images of them being happy together is going to replace that. Here's a suggestion, Have Garudamon hold Sora out of the Lava while it is submerged. It shows great care for each other and self-sacrifice while showing that they understand vulnerability. The episode still would need to show that Sora cares for Pyiomon but I'm sure that is easy to do.
I feel like this episode would be great in the beginning of the series when the kids don't have that strong bond with partners. Maybe all Megas are holy?

I remember forgetting their names due to how much time had passed as well and just remembered them as ‘the girl’ and ‘the bird’. I remember my old garden centre had a Biyomon plushy on one of the tills for years and I remember always wanting it, as even though I could only remember bits of the show at that point and had forgotten all of the characters names (and some of the characters at that point as well) I remembered that ‘the bird’ was my favourite Digimon. I finally rediscovered the show a few years ago and remember watching the bits I could remember as a kid as there were certain clips or episodes I still remembered vividly (I remember being scared of skull greymon and i remember the episode where Kari was revealed as the 8th kid and rushing home from school to watch). I fell in love with Sora and Biyomon again (I even bought my own Biyomon plush!) It was so great to finally see Piyomon’s complete evolution line, especially in the original animation style as I really hated the Tri animation style. Anyway that was an unnecessarily long comment about why I loved this episode so much!

I had a similar trajectory with Digimon originally, I made it to season 4 but you’re right it became increasingly difficult to watch it even if I wanted to because of the TV scheduling! I don’t have strong enough evidence but I’ve always been interesting in researching a video that tries to argue Digimon losing popularity in the west was the TV station’s fault, not the fans disinterest 🤔

Considering pheonixmon is a holy bird digimon, the pasts shows could’ve given hints on a third holy digimon but haven’t done so, so I think they’ll be treating pheonixmon like any other mega. It would be great though if pheonixmon get the form of valdurmon. But chances in that happening are very low.
Solid episode, however I would be lying if I wasn't slightly disappointed that next week seems to be another hard left turn for the Mega evolutions. I really, really just want to see HerculesKabuterimon v GranKuwagamon
I'm hoping phoenixmon is treated like a holy digimon more in the sense that it's one of the most powerful "common" megas before you reach the truly divine like patamon and gatomons lines. The other lines have megas that are rare but known of even wargreymon and metalgarurumon but pheonix is the most powerful bird and/or holy digimon the common digimon could hope it see. Remember valdrumon, the bird who used the last of its power to tell the digidestine about the holy war is a holy digimon that phoenix digivolves into. So while not on any of gatomons or patamons megas levels phoenixmon is a powerhouse of a holy digimon.

To call phoenixmon below the holy angels? No no no. I don't find wargreymon and especially Metalgarrurumon stronger than the rest of the mega Like hell no. It has already been proven year after year in many digimon shows. That the angels are only strong against DARK TYPE digimons but they are ok when up against other types.
Proven by angewomon celestial arrow unable to do anything on zudomons hammer but power it up on episode 38 or 39? In digimon tri ( herculeskabuterimons debut) both infected angemonn and angewomon were unable to defeat kabuterimon. Their attacks were ineffective against kabuterimon. Until an infected togemon shoots her needle spray at kabuterimon.
So No. To call Phoenixmon and the other megalevels lower than wargreymon and the angels. It's not. They are all in the same level.

Vs natural disasters should be used more often. One of my favorite episodes of Frontier is when Tsunomon needs to evolve to Gabumon to save the school from the flood.
In this episode sora and piyomon learn to understand each other not from their own perspective, but from each other perspective. And the very cool thing is somehow hououmon is able to control and stop the lava, it's just amazing even without a fight.
I’m just hoping there would be a better sequence evolution for hououmon. I can understand why garudamon and the other perfect level digimon got satisfactory evolution sequences but hououmon is a mega level digimon like metalgarurumon and wargreymon, their evolution sequence had much better animation and had them looking up to their crests, which were cool and I was hoping they implemented it into hououmon’s but I guess I’m wishing for too much, smh.
I think the problem is more that Agumon/Gabumon got standardised sequences. If they got different ones too, it would be better.
Okay! SO! The bird Digimon Taichi and Sora talk to in episode 5 is Vauldormon. An Ultra Evolution of Houhoumon. So Houhoumon may be treated as a holy Digimon in this series.

The only reason why I accepted the events of this episode was because you have to trust each other first in order to love each other.. And in the subs you see it turned from not being able to trust each other to finally admitting there's love between them.. That was great.. But it wasn't apperent enough
My theory they need to learn the FULL definition of their crest before they can obtain their crest. The more generic views of their crest allowed them to reach their champion and ultimate forms, but to reach mega the kids need to learn the real definition of their crest of that emotion. The 5 that have been unlocked so far are "easy" for children to grasp compared to the 3 still needing to be unlocked. I also think its why in Tri it took them being adults to reach their megas, as they better understood the emotions. Tai like i think digiknow and others already said a few videos back is unable to collect his crest as it acts as the final key and they need the other kids to be ready before his becomes active.

I still have a problem with Sora's characterization - I mean, I'm really glad that we got a Sora-centric episode and I like that we got see another approach to love. But honestly? We still know nothing about Sora - and we know more about each other character, which does put me off a bit.

People say this episode is very similar to episode 25 in Digimon Adventures back 1999. It's similar, but I think the message is slightly different: In the OG series, Sora's mother was very strict person, even making Sora fells upset for not allows her to plays soccer, and Sora learned that her mother just does it because she loves her. Now Sora was acting overprotective to Piyomon like her mother was in the OG series, but she understand that love is not only about security or protect the ones you love, but also about trust one another. Personally, I like the reboot most, since I think Toei messed up with the original Sora.

Well an idea we could have is that Hououmon could evolve into Varudamon as that's a holy bird that spoke to Tai and Sora early on in the show.
I love the concept of this episode. This is literally the ONLY episode that didn't involve fighting an enemy digimon but actually a natural disaster instead. Very unique challenge for Sora and Biyomon. I like the fact that Sora and Tai spent much of this episode helping out Junkmon and his friends to build the wall against the impending eruption too. Sora's conflict with Biyomon was good but I feel like this should've happened before and that again is due to how little development she got throughout the series. Hence why I feel like Phoenixmon's debut felt a little bit flat. Her actual moment was fantastic though by drawing out the lava and turning into a large tower of magma instead, furthermore showing off her powers as a holy digimon by healing Junkmon at the end too. Her evolution sequence though was a big step up over Tri's.
So overall, a good but not great episode.
Yeah if they planted some seeds of Piyomon doubting Sora or growing frustrated with Sora before this it would have been that much stronger! But definitely a strong episode and the natural disaster as the enemy really helps diversify the mega debuts!
Maybe because piyomon can't win alone. So the writer don't require her to beat an enemy.
Maybe they were trying a play on og Sora's character arc, except instead Sora, we have Piyomon. And instead of Sora's mother, we have Sora herself.
Hot take: I way preferred her evolution/appearance in Tri than here. Yeah the evolutions weren't super flashy in Tri or anything but it was CONSISTENT. All characters got the same thing. It's such a huge annoyance to me that Tai and Matt get these awesome mega digivolution sequences and the other characters will just never get them.
I agree with you, and I am thinking about the possibility that the great catastrophe indicates the environmental disaster in the digimon world rather than any enemy digimon.
I thought phonenixmon fighting the volcano was better than the enemy. Nature is beautiful but also causes the most damage to us in the real world. I also love how we got to see that phoenixmon does have healing abilities to go with being a holy digimon when the cuts on junkmon were healed.
So, I'm rather disappointed you didn't comment on it, but this ENTIRE situation with Sora and Piyomon was a reversal of Sora's original character arc from the first Adventure, where she had a big fight with her mom for this EXACT reason, though with her ankle being what was hurt. As I recall, overcoming that was also what was needed to make the Crest of Love shine.

They haven't given Joe a good episode since Zudomon first debuted.
And it's a very powerful holy digimon. In the original, when Birdramon evolved to Garudamon, it shined really bright and its light really affected Myotismon. But it never seemed to be as strong as the angels.
Probably an unpopular opinion but I love the more action of this compared to the original adventure. I don’t mind character development not being as focused on. but with that said, I love seeing the characters working to save the digital world outside of fighting

I don't know how I feel about Garudamon and Sora just chilling in lava before the evolution scene. The whole thing about the Partners riding on their digimon has been a bit messy all along I.e. Garudamon bursting into flames with Sora on her back while doing Shadow Wing attack, Tai on Metalgreymon while he does his spin attack etc. I had kind of assuming that the digimon could control their own attacks to not affect their partners but since the lava is an external thing and still didn't affect Sora kinda took me out of the moment idk

Yes and no. I would say that the Hou-ou/Fenghuang is more like the eastern equivalent to a Pheonix rather than being the same exact thing. They are close enough mythology both being mythical birds with a fire assosation. Though, their myths appear to have been created independently of each other.

They clearly were going for a similar crest of love theme as the 90s series but the fact that we didn't get a flash back of Sora's life with her mom made it weaker. In the 90s series Sora thought she would never understand her crest but then realized that her protective nature toward pyomon was mimicking how her mom treats her and that it was all out of love.

Overall, the episode was surprisingly good, if we talk about the first 15 min. Then we got the evolution scene and the outcome of the episode. This is a very subjective opinion, but seeing that the evolution scene of Hououmon isn't the same level with animation as Wargreymon or Metalgarurumon and scene has more same with Perfect level evolution scene. I would like to know why did "show writers" decide to make this decision. I hope that it's not because of a lack of money. Any reason it is, it bothers me largely.
Another "problem" or more like lack of my own knowledge is that can someone explain how Hououmon was able to lift the magma/lava and make that crystal pilar at end of the episode. I tried looking for any information related to this ability but found nothing. So was this new ability, old ability, or just a poorly done plot device to get rid of the lava/magma?
In regards to the last point I think that they were drawing on the fact that Piyomon and its evolutions have always been able to produce/control fire. So her final form being powerful enough to lift all of the lava into the air and create a crystal pillar is kind of a way of showing that now even without using any attacks they're powerful enough to do that and make sure everyone is safe.
I guess they're giving Tailmon an alt similar to Pegasmon, it seems odd to do so this late though

Next week as someone who pays attention to everything said on the previews, they are dealing with the Lord of the hot spring. Apparently some digimon bought the place and turned it into your Japanese style hot spring resort and the Lord who now owns the place is denying free entry. I surmise Kabukimon works for that Lord so I say Joe is going up against an enemy Armor Evolution.
BTW, I was reading comments and one of them pointed out Taichi's compass is leading him everywhere is because courage was the easiest of the eight to achieve. I was thinking because the meaning of courage is everywhere so Taichi and Agumon's journey will be seeing what courage is like from his friends. Basically he and Agumon are going to be witnesses to all of the mega evolutions.
Already know I'll love the next episode simply cuz of Gatomon referring to Joe as "leader" and all the Gomamon x ShogunGekomon shenanigans. The surprise armor evolution is a bonus

I think this episode should have been two, the first half felt like a filler episode and the conflict to resolution lasted all of 5 minutes.
As for is this the best Sora episode I would have to say I kind of prefer the last Sora-focused episode 40, because it felt like she was taking a more proactive role in that episode.
I would like Phenixmon to be treated as a holy Digimon...maybe Lopmon is about to die in the final few eps and gives it's holy power to Phenixmon, but I don't think it will happen as Pheonixmon was in the war picture back in the early eps(the 1 that conformed yeah everyone is getting mega). I did enjoy this ep and it was a cool way to show love, that trust is needed. As for the preview, I do think it's Joe getting that armor from Gatomon like how Patamon was accidentally the cause of Mimi's armor form.
As a side note I believe in matt's ep that's when he'll get Cresgarurumon so his ep is still special, but who knows.
I think the episode does nod to Hououmon’s status as a holy digimon when it heals everyone’s wounds while shining a brilliant light down. I don’t think they’ll develop it much further than that but it was nice to see
You are always impressed with every episode! they did not even show a full evolution sequence for Hououmon! what a disaster .. and Taishi and his pet dragon got full sequences for their basic dinosaur evolutions
I think people need to accept that Taichi and Yamato have been getting preferential treatment since 1999. Yes I would like full evolution sequences for every character but it's been clear since episode 4 that wasn't going to happen. I'm not going to say the same complaint week over week for 50+ weeks because they are still not giving full evolutions. That doesn't make or break the show for me. Cheers!

It is interesting with the evolutions. There's so much mystery to the parts we thought we knew back in the day but now there's just more mystery of how it works. Not only that but now they have slide evolution? So instead of going down one line of evolution we are now exploring many possibilities? Which brings me more into a show I thought I had figured out 18 years ago....I love it. Just saying sorry if I'm slow on the hype train.

they meant that finding the physical crest isn’t what triggered the evolution which is what a lot of people that would happen. i mean they’re all heading in different directions to find their crests and lots of people assumed that it was so they could reach their mega forms.

Even though (like always *sigh) the digivolution scene was a bit of meh, those Stardust Explosion moves was sooo beautiful! I even repeated it 5 times! Love it! She definitely earned those specification as a Holy Beast digimon, she could change a disastrous event into something ethereal.. And Hououmon main tribute was healing, so.. yes, no fighting!

Given the focus on the Holy Rings and the “holy Digimon” music cues, I think this series is respecting (ホウオウモン) Hououmon’s status as a holy Digimon. The difference is that Patamon and Gatomon are already holy Digimon and evolve into holy Digimon in all their states whereas Piyomon does not.
Also, Kabukimon comes from Mimi’s crest, not Joe’s.
So it seems that the final 15 episodes will be about unlocking all the teams Megas.
Kabukimon maybe it's like a alter evolution for Tailmon just like Pegasmon where you can see the yellow background

As for Hououmon, I don't think she'll be treated as being on the same level as the Holy Digimon, but they are leaning into its holy power a lot more than Adventure Tri did (i.e. not at all). Patamon and Tailmon obviously aren't the only Digimon with holy power, they're just the big hitters, the real deal. So if they choose to go into it, we'll probably just have some explanation of the holy rings and lower-tier holy Digimon.

Lopmon then goes like “with the last of my power, I can combine your power.” And I was floored! I was literally thinking, “the last of your power?! YOU HAVENT DONE ANYTHING!” They really hate lopmon! And give terriermon the goods. The best lopmon got was tamers and even then he/she was useless in the runaway locomon movie
But the Phoenixmon didn’t do much in this episode, I mean it did stop the eruption forever, but what have it done? What’s the power it used? What happened at all?

I never thought the crests were for mega, cause of tai and matt. But Im kinda hoping that there will be another evolution for them that comes through understanding the crests and unlocking their full power.
Also the fact that they actually showcased the rings, makes it seem to me that indeed they want to highlight Houhoumon's Holy digimon status. And this might be fully explained on the crest adventure. And i do think they are treating her as a Holy digimon because this entire scene from the light to the sparkles/glitter was similar to the other holy digimon. Its possible and I hope they do go in on this and explain, I don't think there is anything wrong stating that Houhoumon preferred to exist in the digirealm and not the angelic one despite being a Holy digimon. It's a possibility. I would also love if there was a link between Houhou and Valdurmon mentioned aswell.
All the armour evolutions so far have been from the sincerity line up excluding pegasumon ..Ponchomon, nohemon and now kabukimon

Gatomon is already at Champion level although Salamon is never shown to evolve. If there is a 02 reboot Gatomon needs to devolve for the Nefertimon armor evolution to make sense and for Gatomon to be treated as a real Champion. So all bets are on Gomamon.

I think ultimate needs crest. Mega does not. But ultra needs crest plus even deeper meaning or the physical crest peice thing.

It's interesting that we have had megas even without the crests, which the crests themselves were physical embodiments of every characters best quality, i really do wonder how they will implement them

The crests are being used. They have the power of the crests in their digivices. That's why the symbols always appear on the screen.

Maybe there's even bigger surprise from writer that the crest is not the source for the evolution animation. Houhoumon to digivolve even further to Zhuqiaomon

If you think about it, reversing a natural disaster is exactly the kind of power a Mega Digimon should have. The power of love is so strong that not even an angry volcano can compare. I like that.
Yeah! I really like that not every Mega debut is just a power showcase. WarGreymon was that, but then MetalGarurumon was the race and a show of friendship, and Hououmon was stopping a natural disaster and a show of love between partners!

The episode's biggest problem I have is that Sora is so passive in terms of her reaction to others. Her reaction to Pyiomon telling her she hated her when she said a stupid thing, that she realized was a stupid thing wasn't to apologize profusely or trying to clarify, but stunned silence. And even after the initial shock, sora doesn't pursue Pyiomon to make up with her, and even when they meet later in the episode it is Pyiomon that apologizes when Pyiomon wasn't at fault. Sora was insensitive. Pyiomon overreacted for sure. But I am very disappointed that Sora showed so little care for Pyiomon. Not to mention that whole swimming in lava business was fucking stupid. Just in general the lack of care between Sora and Pyiomon was brought into sharp focus by this episode. We saw them work together once. We saw more Tai and Agumon synergy in this episode than Sora and Pyiomon. And even after their conflict is resolved, we see nothing in terms of interaction that would give the impression that they share a special bond and no amount of flashing images of them being happy together is going to replace that. Here's a suggestion, Have Garudamon hold Sora out of the Lava while it is submerged. It shows great care for each other and self-sacrifice while showing that they understand vulnerability. The episode still would need to show that Sora cares for Pyiomon but I'm sure that is easy to do.
If Joe is taking a backseat to mega and getting a weird evolution like Mimi, then I'm assuming Izzy will get the mega with tentomon.

I feel like this episode would be great in the beginning of the series when the kids don't have that strong bond with partners.
