- Welcome back to Pop Dissected! Today, we're going to go over the career of Carly Rae Jepsen! Though most known for her smash hit single, "Call Me Maybe", the rest of her career is lesser known.
With efforts such as "Emotion", "Dedicated" and "Dedicated Side B", she's been met with universal acclaim, though not much commercial success. Why is this?

I feel like the music that she makes now is much better then her old music, and yet, she is mostly recognized for her old music

Scooter Braun is a piece of work for only promoting Justin Bieber and Ariana grande when we had/has Carly Rae jepsen, CL, amber riley, tori Kelly and Asher Roth right on his label. Emotion is still one of the best pop albums of the decade.

EMOTION and dedicated were critically acclaimed and her music isn't that kind of generic radio friendly pop music, she's heavily inspired by 70s and 80s synth-pop which fits her so much!

A big part of her downfall was her management. Scooter controlled everything up until I Really Like You. Apparently, he left an intern with Carly after that song didn’t do good. It was managements decision to release Emotion in Japan way before the US release date. Plus the record leaked around that time and didn’t help at all. Scooter dropped her not long after it was released in the Us. A friend who is a huge Carly stan gave me this tea.

Carly didn't want to be a pop superstar. Wasn't into the intense attention. She let her management and co-writers know this. She likes the cult status. It's an intentional strategy.

Run Away with Me should've been the lead single off Emotion instead of "Call Me Maybe 2", because that song was a bop and a banger that slapped!
"Your Type," "Gimmie Love," and "Let's Get Lost" all would have been better candidates than "I Really Like You."
Carly thought the same. But her company wants IRLY as a single.

I really like I Really Like You, but it takes a while to build. Run Away With You slaps you in the face and says "I'm back bitches". It kicks off the album and it should have kicked off that era.

Scooter has ruined the careers of many. He has a tendency to sign artists that are trending and have huge potential, and under promote them. Honestly, he has more flops to his name than he does hits. Tori Kelly, Rixton, Who Is Fancy, The Wanted, CL, Psy, and The Knocks could have all been huge, but had their careers mismanaged by Scooter.
I don't think so. She flops because her songs are too beautiful for today's shitty generation. You know what I mean.

To be honest, the issue with CRJ in my opinion is that she has too many down-beat slow songs. Her upbeat music (even when it's about serious subject matter) is what really shines, but it comprises little of her discography.
her career isn't ruined. she's still living her best life and putting out amazing bodies of work, and I'm sure she's much happier now. a lack of mainstream chart success doesn't equal failure.
I kind of think Carly's in the best position she could be in though. She has a ton of creative control, she works with amazing co-writers and producers, she's a critically acclaimed indie darling with a devoted following and is a gay icon. To me, that seems like a much better outcome than being a really huge pop star, what with all the baggage and restrictions that come with that.
She is more real to me, she is sweet and positive and showing her emotions in such a powerful, unique, and effective way. All of those things on her is balanced and shows her own charm of personality.
I think she's ok with where she is at in the music industry. She once commented that the CMM success was overwhelming and that kind of fame was uncomfortable for her.
Carly Rae Jepsen, Lorde, Charli XCX, Tove Lo, etc. are all artists with at least one very recognizable hit and then has proceeded to create so many masterpieces that don’t even chart and I fail to see why. Like even if the promotion is week, don’t people get curious about where these people ended up? And Carly has such a huge fan base with the LGBTQ+ community so I’m surprised her later songs aren’t as well known.
I think it’s good that they aren’t mainstream and don’t chart. It prevents the music from being overplayed and losing the creative edge that it has. They are the few pop artists that are keeping the genre alive and it’s a good thing that mainstream media hasn’t tainted that.
benjamin jackson Well she at least deserves to earn more revenue and accolades for her albums since they are much masterpieces. Even if she doesn’t see the charting performances we think she deserves.
Carly Rae Jepsen, Lorde, Charli XCX, and Tove Lo all have largely-gay fanbases (and I'm gonna throw in Allie X here because more people need to find her).
What is my takeaway? Gay people know good music.

Call Me Maybe was huge, but it wasn't the kind of song that made you interested in the artist who sang it. Didn't help that her followup singles were nowhere near as memorable, and by the time EMOTION rolled around, any interest in her as a persona was completely gone. She's found her niche and seems to be much happier now than when she was under Scooter's wing, so I say just let her thrive in her own lane

She’s actually playing the long run. No one’s going to notice her getting older and consumed with fame, which is a nice thing for a change. Her faithful fans will be there to support her artistic integrity instead of just remembering her as the “Call Me Maybe” girl.
the thing about carly is, she has one of the strongest fanbases i have ever seen. all of her fans are ride or die and i can say that as im one of them
EMOTION is probably one of the best albums... Carly is so underrated, she has so many bops!
I feel like Carly Rae falls into the emerging group of artists that gain huge gay/pop fan followings, and even have one or more hits, yet never hit the mainstream (such as troye Sivan, charli xcx, Tove lo, etc.) it’s a real shame because she is BEYOND talented, and also so so sweet in person! emotion is such an amazing album, one of my favorites!

Sir Snakespeare at the end of the call me maybe music video, it’s revealed the guy carly’s crushing on in the video is gay. (played more so for a laugh, sadly, but was still seen as major LGBT rep during that time.) also I think just the fun/be yourself attitude expressed in her music has attracted a lot of gay fans. (also I’ve seen a lot of drag queens do lipsyincs to her songs lol.)
Emotion and Dedicated are amazing albums. “Runaway With Me” is pure gold. Please don’t sleep on those!
Runaway With Me is probably my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
E MO TION is a POP Masterpiece, Run Away with Me is my favorite song of this century, she's so good, so sad her music career is becoming the new Robyn, a perfect POP Star without mainstream hit.
Geez, It gets to my nerves that that piano cover of Dancin on my own is more known that Robyn's original version. I made my personal job to show it to everyone who likes that crap.

Tbh, she's doing just fine. She may not be as big as other artists from her generation, but she created a loyal fans. She may be labeled as "One Hit wonder/Call Me Maybe Girl", but she's more than that.

I saw Carly Rae perform in Philly. It was a sold out show, and the venue was packed to the point of not being able to move. The crowd was absolutely wild for her and they sang along to every song. You never would have known that she was considered "underrated" by the love in that venue.

Runaway With Me should have been her lead single from Emotion. That song is perfect pop, and had crazy meme potential.
She also played Frenchy in Grease Live I didnt even know she could act it was cool seeing a different side of her.
She also played Cinderella on Broadway and has many tv roles and movie roles.😍 A talented queen she is.

Basically no artist is guaranteed commercial success that's just life. Some things just end up being more popular than others for whatever reason.
She’s making consistently great music. Who cares if she doesn’t make another monster hit. Her body of work is substantial and she will keep growing if she doesn’t succumb to the pressure of trying to repeal such a monster hit. She needs to work on a more impactful image. Her music is great.
I really love her music. She was greatly misrepresented! Her music is fun ad great to listen to. I hope she gets the right management who will really support her .
She deserves so much better. Her music progressively gets better and better, it’s so hard to top your latest work (quality-wise) but she keeps doing it with every other album.

It’s hard for people to give someone a chance if they aren’t into the big hit. Call Me Maybe is by far her worst song. That doesn’t help. However she is super popular underground bc many did give her a chance

To me Carly Rae is one of those artists who didn’t set out to be a pop star but had a surprise hit and after some financial success just did what they wanted. I don’t see anything wrong with that career path.
I've listened to alot of her later music, she is phenomenal! I remember when Call Me Maybe was everywhere and I wish people would take a listen to her new stuff. The music is amazing! Hopefully, if she keeps making good music and if the critics have anything to go by....I hope eventually gets some grammy recognition. She really has grown as an artist. Give her a listen!

Nothing happened. She may not release a single as big as Call Me Maybe anymore but she's doing just fine. E.MO.TION was a cultural reset. Its Side B was also a masterpiece. Dedicated and its Side B were awesome too! Too bad the general audience slept on her after CMM. But now, she has a cult following. We will still be supporting her no matter what happens.
I think she does this intentionally. She said that she hated hearing her song everywhere and maybe thats why she tries to avoid getting high on the charts.

I forgot about her right after "call me maybe" went down the charts and I appeared to listen to her again after 3 years when she dropped "EMOTION". it was a great body of work but I still wouldn't give her Grammy worthiness for the whole work tho cuz it lacks cohesiveness but individually, each track is amzing.

*EMOTION* was basically was *folklore* & *Future Nostalgia* before they ever dropped. I say that bc *EMOTION* was originally titled *Eternal Summer* & was meant to be a indie-folk album this was later scrapped but sounds similiar in that sense to *folklore* which was released after. The sound of the final product is similar in the sense that *Future Nostalgia* is more throwback just like the project itself. So, I guess her music was just before its time, yet, those that came after did better.

I love her music. She has her own sound and her voice is amazing. And she releases B-sides, something pop artists don't do. She absolutely loves her fans and gives us so much material to listen to in-between albums.

She may be a one hit wonder in the eyes of the world. But she never sold herself off to being that.
I actually got into her when EMOTION was released and I have been a fan of her ever since.
She reminds me of another Canadian band that never got airplay but sold millions of records and has a huge following worldwide Rush.

Social media is the new medium for artists and how they can continue a career without the need for a big label pushing their content on listeners. I love Emotions and was shocked that it didn’t chart better, however, there are loads of fans who are dedicated to her music. You don’t need big wigs at record companies to help with your success. You can do it on your own.

She refused to tramp out, fake a depression, or do some desperate publicity act and instead focused on making actually good pop music. Emotion is still my jam.
