The first time I heard Run Away With Me, I thought that the Sax was some kind of boat whistle. So that was my answer, they ran away in a ship, to a faraway land.
"Run Away With Me" is one of those songs that REALLY gets you thinking about that person you love. Dragging them across the world or letting them drag you. The verses feel like those small intimate moments with them, the hotel room and the small coffee shops. And when the snare hits it feels like you're in time square with them just dancing together and looking at every billboard, and most importantly, them. A small detail that I love is that this song can be sung by any gender for any gender with nothing needing change for a natural sound to the words. It may not have been intentional on Carly's part considering the year this came out, but if it was, bless that woman's soul. It's all "you", no "He" or "She", cause in this song it doesn't matter what they are, just that you love them and are romantically requesting to run away with them. I fucking love that.
It might've been intentional considering Carly's beliefs, I remember she didn't sing for this boy scout event thingy due to homophobia on their part or smth
omg that feeling during the verse where it feels like shes singing to you real close up and then right after That Massive Snare Hit youre suddenly zooooming out and now youre in this real big space and the chorus is all around you from every angle. exactly youre right thats exactly where the serotonin comes from!! you did it wow i love this video
Emotion and Dedicated are the most underrated albums in my decision. CRJ makes some incredible music and I don’t understand why she doesn’t get as much recognition.
Okay, but "I really like you" could be one of the worst songs of the decade. I don't understand why she is so overhyped tbh. She has some good songs. And some good variety, but there are some plain annoying and cheesy songs, even for the pop genre.
@@gintuner4371 If you keep looking at CRJ through the lens of "Call Me Maybe girl", maybe it's no wonder you don't understand her. I think it's best to let go of preconceived notions like that especially when dealing with a stylistically different album (Emotion in this case) from her EP. But hey, it's not my place to tell you to enjoy her music.
Eh, I Really Like You has a silly chorus (although I think that bright-eyed, girl-next-door pop aesthetic is part of her thing), but there's nothing wrong with the song musically. I've even warmed up to Call Me Maybe (although the album has better songs, like This Kiss and Tiny Little Bows). Carly is awe-inspiring in how consistently good she is. (Although I'm a little disappointed with Dedicated Side B: it's decent but feels uninspired.)
I Really Like You may be a cheesy song with repetitive lyrics, but the instrumental is amazing in my opinion! It’s fun, upbeat, powerful in the chorus, etc. And there are so many songs that’re are a much stronger contender for worst of the decade if you ask me.
@Central Intelligence Agency Um, no? Billie Eilish won 4 Grammies. 4. She is 18 and doesn't have any sexual songs. The women you just named aren't sluts. You are the same as people just recognizing Carly as the Call Me Maybe girl and not looking further into her music. Those women do their own kind of art and it doesn't mean they are sluts just because they are expressing their sexuality and have some sexual songs.
I know next to nothing about music, and I love when smart people break down WHY songs evoke the reactions they do. It's like listening to a wizard explain magic. Great video!
"Recognizable yet unique." Yes!! Exactly! That was my feeling when I first heard the intro to this song! I thought, "I swear I've heard this before...but at the same time I've never heard anything quite like this!".
Yeah it was nothing like call me maybe if we are comparing hits, unfortunately, she has so many songs that could explode into a hit song they honestly deserve to they are so well made.
This song is not that complex. You could imagine chord voicings (the sus2 thingy he mentioned) are seasonings for a food, and used right with a good food (song) itself, the results could be very enjoyable. But for this song, although the seasonings themselves are “odd” for usual, the food itself isn’t any outstanding at all, therefore you don’t feel the greatness of the seasonings because the final product just isn’t impressive, and there is a reason why you don’t hear it on radio.
I can't think of another artist that peaked in popularity well before they peaked in musical greatness. She's highly underrated and i can't say that about anyone else that had a "song of the summer"
Incidental note about the "missing tonic" in the progression: In addition to the vocals constantly implying an F# triad, the G#7sus2 at the end of the cycle shares all but the third from F#6/9, a fairly classic jazz tonic tension, meaning that there is *something* of a dominant-to-tonic resolution in terms of the raw pitch content... but it's hidden, pent up, missing key pieces, with the motion instead implying a more muted plagal cadence in the Dorian mode-for when natural minor just isn't cutting it in the heartbreaking department. All of this, I feel, really adds to the mix of frustration, resignation, wistfulness and aching longing that the song conveys, and is overall just a really clever bit of musical storytelling.
Me: [Nodding along, understanding maybe 40% of what is being said] MTS: The chorus is louder than the rest of the song and that's good Me: FUCK YEAH THIS GUY GETS IT

I tried and failed to study music (at GCSE level, so not this level of analysis) but it’s fascinating to see this and understand some of this analysis on a pop track, a genre with seemingly very little going on beneath the surface.
the sax is synthetic! or rather a sample being played over a midi, either way it shows in the “Making of Emotion” documentary one of her producers playing it on a midi keyboard
Only problem is Emotion didn't get the recognition it deserved, thankfully 1989 did. Maybe if we didn't have 1989 dominate in 2014 and 2015 then Emotion would have had an easier time?
@@Maxwaehrens I'd agree with that. Taylor's one of my favourite artists so she deserves it, but Carly is amazing too and so deserved to be recognized as well. Her recent album and b sides were so good too.
Carly got poor management. She really had a chance to be a massive A list celebrity, but instead she became one hit wonder. I finally listen to emotion and damn that record is great. But sadly the society only know "Call Me Maybe".
This song is not that complex. But for this song, although the seasonings themselves are “odd” for usual, the food itself isn’t any outstanding at all, therefore you don’t feel the greatness of the seasonings because the final product just isn’t impressive.
I think it depends on how you're judging complexity. In sheer terms of stuff to talk about (keys, chords, harmony, time, form, etc.) I wouldn't say this song or most pop is particularly complex, but complexity isn't really the point; it's more about the musical storytelling, which is subtle and artistic even if it's not complex. I like tons of complex music (lots of jazz, classical, prog), but not BECAUSE it's complex, but because of what it does with that complexity. It's no different than "simple" pop music like this. I guess I'm saying I care more about the painting that the complexity or simplicity of the tools and technique that went into painting it, as everyone should IMO.
I did not like Call Me Maybe. I pretty much wrote Carly Rae Jepsen off because of that one song. Then This song popped up and I had no idea who it was, but I was in awe. I'm already not a pop fan. Most of Emotion (with the exception of the song mentioned and maybe one other) is absolutely amazing. I listen to it a lot. Also, peep those lyrics. I love the playfulness in the lyrics. Suggestive, not overly in your face. She doesn't just say, "I'm in love" I know a lot of songs do this, but the way she expresses it is just so good. I'm glad I gave her another chance.
Emotions is so good, loved the whole album, and I'm someone who will not buy an album outright, I have to investigate the songs first, and then I have to like all songs in order for me to buy it, and I don't regret it
Pop perfection from beginning to end. I was hoping the analysis included what to me is the highest point of the song, which is the outro with those choir-like backing vocals singing the saxophone hook. You finish the song and it’s like you need to catch some air because of how intense and brilliant it is.

This was absolutely excellent! I’ve always known there was something excellent about this song. I was actually learning to play it on the piano before I saw this and noticed a lot of the harmonic complexity you mentioned. Then I saw your video and you went into a lot more depth. I like that you take all aspects of a song into account when analyzing. That’s important because cool chords are cool but a song is a lot more than harmonic analysis. Keep it up!
I can’t get this song from my head after my playlist play this song recently. And thanks for your video now I will blast this song all over the neighborhood and this will be the anthem for quarantine until I bored with it ha ha

TH-cam algorithm really nailed it this time, idek who you are, some of your concepts went over my head a bit, but the passion and humour with which you express your analysis of this fire song are just fantastic. Really cool video.
You make a really good point about the way the chorus shatters our expectations and reveals a much larger space than was assumed! I think that this hints at the way RAWM (and Emotion as a whole) emphasizes this expansiveness of feeling- of your emotions being too large for you to handle (you can see this in the album's definition of it, where it shows how emotions are "instinctive" and hard to control). Too-big feelings are a popular theme in pop music, but I think Emotion is unique in how it carries this theme through into the melody (not just the lyrics) and in how it coalesces around a rather tragic view of that theme.
Glad this video got recommended to me after all these years! Run Away With Me is a magical song to me and quite literally takes me away to another dimension entirely

trueee
i go back to rewatch this every once in a while, like a person visiting the same painting in a gallery every now and then
Yesterday was my first time hearing this song while on shuffle. Now I'm a casual listener of Carly's popular hits (and western wind) but the algorithm gods must've wanted me to hear this masterpiece. . .
and let me tell you I've never stopped doing dishes so fast just to save this song to a playlist cause i immediately fell in love with the intro and didn't want to lose the song amidst the shuffle like- AND IT MADE ME EXPLORE OTHER E•MO•TION TRACKSSSS
THIS SONG IS CRAZYYYY GOOD
Wow how does this channel not have more subscribers. Everything about this is great. The personality, the editing and the format. Just a rlly good video overall
6:05 I love this
This is one of my favorite videos I’ve seen in a while. Freakin hilarious and so knowledgeable. PERFECT TH-cam content
Yes!
“This is the only sax line you will ever need because memes”
Epic Sax Guy from Eurovision would like to have a word
Videos like these make me love TH-cam so damn much! Amazing analysis!
Keep it up!
Sometimes i come rewatch this video because of how much i love this song and want someone to share the feeling with me
You have me convinced that this is the greatest pop song of all time
I can’t get this song from my head after my playlist play this song recently. And thanks for your video now I will blast this song all over the neighborhood and this will be the anthem for quarantine until I bored with it ha ha
The fantastic analysis that a fantastic song deserves.
This just popped up on my recommended in 2020. AND I 1000000% AGREE THAT RUN AWAY WITH ME IS ONE OF _THE_ BEST SONGS OF THE CENTURY. IT IS SO CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. IT PISSES ME OFF THAT ARTISTS LIKE CARLY AND LORDER GOT POPULAR WITH A VIRAL HIT AND ARE NOW OVERLOOKED.

TH-cam algorithm really nailed it this time, idek who you are, some of your concepts went over my head a bit, but the passion and humour with which you express your analysis of this fire song are just fantastic. Really cool video.
Carly Rae Jepsen is my absolutely favorite pop artist! I can and do listen to her on a daily basis and am never tired of her
I'm biased but this was one of those songs that gave me goosebumps. No one does that except Robyn!
i cannot stop sending this vid to everyone i know and rewatching it every other week, youre the BEST
Thank you for articulating exactly why this song is so close to my heart. Carly Rae is our queen 🌈

Also MicTheSnare: Goes into great detail.
I love TH-cam because of this
That Sax line lives in my head. It never leaves. It'll randomly pop into my head and it hits me every single time.
this is an iconic video its what our queen of pop deserves
Glad this video got recommended to me after all these years! Run Away With Me is a magical song to me and quite literally takes me away to another dimension entirely
EMOTION was a very underrated album. It deserves more attention and recognition.
I'm not a pop music listener but saw this video a few years back. Thank you, I have had run away with me in rotation since. It's passionate, honest, it shuffles and has that sax!
truly one of the greatest songs ever
idk why this was recommended to me all of the sudden, but I have a new entry in my top 3 favorite songs now so thanks!
My favorite song of all time. This was an incredible study!!! Also, I definitely knew the chorus was louder 😂
EMOTION is one of the highest rated pop albums of the decade and it still doesn’t get enough love. Please keep it up
