    All the other "Basic" setup tutorials I've seen seem to assume I already have the basics down and skip ahead to explaining path signals or (in one case) using industrial storage to buffer loading/unloading times.
    So thank you for explaining the mechanisms of first setting up the tracks and the stations, the different cars and platforms, and other genuinely basic stuff _before_ getting into the more complicated things.

    90 seconds in I thought, "Ok, this video was made for me." Steam says I've played 1900+ hours, been playing since a little before U3 dropped, but I've dodged trains in every save... anyway, my new save I wanted to focus on trains, and this was the primer I needed. Thank you for going into such detail, you answered all my questions before I had them. Liked and subbed!

    Thanks for the video! It was a great beginner's guide! The ability to have trains wait until unload was one of the best features added - it really made the ability to create a provider station and make sure its open for pickups. If trains kept coming in for pickup they'd stack up and make it hard to get what they needed. I'm still trying to figure out how to better use the load/unload particular items as sushi train cars are really hard to manage. Lol.

      Build tips was something that I wish I put in part 1 (and part 2 as well...) but it will be coming in part 3!
      Here's a quick tip though:
      Using foundations as a grid, the shortest 90 degree turn that you can make is on a 3x3 grid in an L-shape. Make sure when doing this, that your rails are centered on the foundations.
      Place a starter rail segment centered at the very edge of the foundation, leading up to the 3x3 grid first.
      Then place down your corner rail segment second, dragging it to the edge of the grid on the opposite side of the starter segment.
      That's all there is to it! You now have a nice crisp 90 degree turn and from there you can continue to build off of it!
      The 3x3 grid corner can be a bit quirky. You MUST place down a starter segment first, then your corner segment, and lastly an end segment. If you try to build the corner segment last by placing it in between a starter and an end segment, then the game will bug out and refuse to do it.
      To make larger turns, the idea is the same and they won't be as troublesome as the 3x3 turn.
      In terms of incorporating height into your turns, then for the 3x3 90 degree turn, I've found that stacking TWO 4m foundations on top of eachother seems to be the rough limit.
      On that last foundation on your grid where you want your turn to end, simply stack two 4m foundations above or below it and you'll be able to place your corner rail segment down, making a nice sharp turn on a crisp incline.
      I hope I was able to explain that properly, if not then railing down rails will be apart of the next and final video!

  • @johnrtrucker
    @johnrtrucker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is the best in depth guide on trains to date I've learned more than in every other video so I wanted to thank you for this video but what if two trains are heading to an intersection at the same time and you got the signals placed properly but both trains entered the same block at the same time without enough time to stop or is there a mechanism that will prevent this?

    • @ToasterGamingYT
      @ToasterGamingYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, much appreciated! And that's an excellent question, there is a mechanism in place that will prevent this. Basically, automated trains can defy the laws of physics... If you have an intersection that has properly placed signals on it, and two trains are approaching it at the same exact time, and for example they're going at insane speeds (like well over 100km/hr each), then which ever train entered that intersection first, even if it's by a millionth of a second faster than the other train, that first train will be allowed to continue through the intersection. The other train will come to an immediate dead stop to prevent the collision. It will literally go from over 100km/hr to 0 km/hr in a split second. It's actually pretty funny to watch. I'll be showing an example of this in the next video when I go further in depth into signals, so keep an eye out for part 2!

    I always power my rail system separately from the main power grid for the factories, and I set up a separate power station (or two) just to supply power to the rail system. This ensures that if the main grid goes down the trains will still run, and I can use the trains to get around the map to fix the main power. That means I have power poles following along the rail system, but that's not a big deal (in fact I run the power lines out in front of where the tracks will go when I'm building the rail line so that I can use the hoverpack to help me lay the track).

  • @ToasterGamingYT
    @ToasterGamingYT  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Amendments:
    Although not fully explained in this video, freight cars do have "weight." Weight will affect the ability of a train line to be able to travel up inclines. The amount of goods that you load into a freight car will increase the weight of the freight car.
    The max top speed for any train is now limited to 200 km/h.

    I can report that trains DO NOT always take the shortest path between two points. I have seen trains do all sorts of nonsense at times depending on whether the train has locos at both ends and whether it has had to reverse directions along its route. I have set up a route where I expected a train to continue out of a station in the same direction only to have it reverse out and take some mind-numbing detour to the next place. It would be nice to have more control over those sorts of behaviors, but the trains do what they want.

    Nice vid for you first guide made. one info that i saw was missing is the hight trains can move upwards. other guides say hight increase by 2m foundations however you didnt use fundations below your traks so its was hard to say.
    in my opinion i would have separated the signals in a separated part. Your speach, voice sound and speed was good. only the length and amount of information packed into a so short timeframe makes it very tireing to listen to. did watch it to the end however 1 min longer and i would have stoped watching before the end.

      And fair point! I easily could have split this into 3 or more videos but I was torn between having a dozen different videos covering individual parts that people can refer to or to have longer jammed pack videos that people can come back to and reference as needed. Despite going with the latter I'm glad that you were still able to enjoy the video and make it to the end! Thanks again for the constructive advice!

      @@ToasterGamingYT glad to be of help.
      well even do i dont make vids my own, a script will be very helpfull where you can list all things you want to put in a guide in and then arrange them to be in order.
      even do a lot is covered in the vid its a bit back and forward with stuff. a clean line where you may start withe the basic like 1 train track, back and forward tracks and slowly getting more into advanced stuff with like setting up lines, doing crossings, getting more trains on the same track to go even higher by adding signals and do specific loads unloads, large trains, going into details like how fast a unload sequense takes time or how to load unload into the station.
      yep you got most covered but its newbie stuff mixed with expert stuff in a non linear fashion. since i did watch many other guides on Trains i had some knowledge allredy gathered from other guides. and i wish you the best of luck that your channel will keep growing.
      like in Satisfactory its like in YT everyone starts at some point and learns over time. You have the advantage of a clean easy to understand english voice without any dialect that indicates another mother tongue. and that is a very importent thing to reach a lot of YT watchers WW. If you keep on refining your skills, and focus on specific games to cover with vids you will see a steady growth in subs and views, im shure and if you keep it on high and invest some freetime you can easyly reach the 10k subs within 3 years.

    love the guide, but it keeps saying that my train station is unreachable with the push pull method. i think maybe its just too long of a track, or that maybe its cause the rails clip through some walls, but i honestly cant figure it out.

    What I wanted to know was WHY. Belts are functionally better 100% of the time. Trains consume power, belts don't, and trains can only move materials AT MOST as fast as they are belted in. Trains cost less to build over long distances (high fixed costs though), and they might be aesthetically preferable (especially compared to ground belts or sky bridges), but if you can afford a belt and don't mind looking at it, the belt will be better.

    I really think the trains should act like the drones. Have it be able to load AND unload from 1 freight platform

    @chrisloach9658 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can I ask where you got 27.08 seconds for the loading time from? The wiki claims 25 but checked quickly just with my watch and it's definitely around 27. How did you come up with such a specific number?

    • @ToasterGamingYT
      @ToasterGamingYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time that I made this video the wiki stated that oddly specific number, but it looks like it may have been changed at some point.

    • @chrisloach9658
      @chrisloach9658 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToasterGamingYT Ah yes I see the 27.08 figure appears on the Electric Locomotive page whereas 25 appears on the train station and freight platform articles.

    • @chrisloach9658
      @chrisloach9658 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay so I did some more sleuthing through the edit history and it looks like the Electric Locomotive article used to also say 25 until it was changed to 27.08 by 'Ondar111' on 24th November 2021. He has pro by his name so I guess that's good. Might try track him down and ask him how he came up with the number.
