    We did the ultimate Xantia Diesel road trip in 2013 in my 1997 1.9 Turbo Diesel delivering 90 hp.
    Way Out Back - Broken Hill, Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Coober Pedy (Opal mines & underground motel), Kangaroo Island & Murray Valley. It had 110,000 kms on the speedo.
    .
    The only 2WD vehicle we saw of the Oodnadatta Track & Lake Eyre (full of water).
    Fabulous comfort, handling, boot space, ride, dust proofing and great a/c.
    Best we saw was 5.4/ 100 km. Longest day on the OT 605 kms including 400 on dirt.
    Touring speed - 100 to 110 kph on dirt. 130 on tar.
    Small incidents.
    Lost felt undertray on dried up dirt tracks near Menindee Lakes back road.
    Blown fuse in Broken Hill.
    Did not make the whole 100 metre distance on fine gravel dried up creek bed in Flinders Ranges on medium height suspension setting. 4WD towed us out the last 25 metres.
    Great machine. Eventually got rid after the rebuilt fuel pump gave issues 2 years later, as catalyst to sell my last hydraulically spring Citroen. I still have my 1990 2CV6 RHD Charleston here in Sydney plus a C4 Cactus.

    I miss my Xantia so much, genuinely the best car I ever owned and I hope to have another one day when I have a bit more free time since they do need a lot of attention. Very elegant looking I always thought.

    I've just bought my first ever Citroen. Coincidentally, it's a Xantia too. I'm in Australia and mine is a 2 litre petrol. It's a 96 model and it's almost mint.
    My only complaint is that the fan (for the vents) has recently decided to stay on full.
    Despite this, I love the car. It's totally original right down to the factory Citroen Radio/cassette, which works perfectly. Right now I'm listening to the radio version of Yes, Prime Minister on cassette. That hasn't aged either.

      Some of the hydropneumatic suspension one can sort out on their own, but a good specialist can sort out the major issues of the suspension.

    Extremely envious! Love the Xantia, particularly the early ones with the smoked rear lights, earlier headlights, bumpers and grille as yours is. VSX is my choice spec, but SX still has the majority of the accoutrements.
    Have been trawling the adds in France to get a left hooker as I'd like to get a pressed plates and some period-correct Brittany Ferries GB stickers. Also considering a MK 1 Twingo.
    Looking forward to seeing all the updates for this car.

      Yeah the SX is just one down from the VSX, and doesn’t miss out on too much stuff. It’s a far cry from the sea of blanking-plates in the Fiesta and Metro!

    These are still very understated, in fact it was a funny time for Citroen where they were trying to be a bit more conventional but under the skin were still very much a Citroen. Like so many Citroens I think these are looking better with age.

    • @MorselsAndMotors
      @MorselsAndMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree - I really wasn't bothered about them at all until recently. It still isn't my Citroen of choice, but it's a good compromise of quirky technology in a more modern and robust bodystyle

  • @colin13579
    @colin13579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Congratulations on your Xantia purchase, even though it’s been a bit of a headache so far.
    These early examples are extremely rare now and I always think of them as a BX in a Xantia body due to the characteristics of the suspension dropping when switched off, as I believe from about mid 1994 onwards Citroen fitted an anti sink sphere so they stayed up when not in use!
    Hope you can start enjoying it now you’ve fixed some of the niggles.

    • @MorselsAndMotors
      @MorselsAndMotors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, you are absolutely right. This is a very early ‘sinker’, and the only Xantia I would choose. I wanted it to be as pure as possible to the BX (which is what I really want) but be in a body that’s a bit more robust and modern

    • @philg3591
      @philg3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually that's a very common misconception. My 94 January build also has anti sink fitted yet has the mk1 front end and early non airbag steering wheel. There were quite a few others like this too. Nevertheless you're right MK1 are extremely rare now (mainly due to rust) and there remains an active group of enthusiasts in the CCC and a very active column.
      Look forward to seeing this one at a rally sometime

    • @truthseeker8483
      @truthseeker8483 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does the anti-sink sphere work?? A one way valve closes when pressure drops? or perhaps when ignition is turned off?

    • @philg3591
      @philg3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tobias Cat that's amazing. I thought I was keeping track of them all. Are you in the UK? If so do you attend any events in it?

    • @philg3591
      @philg3591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@truthseeker8483 there's a central "anti sink sphere" for the rear that holds pressure in rear brakes and helps to hold the rear suspension up. Then there's an anti sink valve behind/underneath the tank that holds pressure in the system. The cars with this have an advantage in that they have a different pump set up with no fdv. (Fdv was used on the bx etc and can leak)

  • @a.wilson4380
    @a.wilson4380 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Really good underneath for an almost 30 year old car. French cars seem quite robust for rust. My previous 16 year old Renault clio didn't have a single bit of rust, not even a bubble. Since they stopped making the xantia in 2001, they rapidly vanished from the roads throughout the following decade.

    • @AJ-tj7jm
      @AJ-tj7jm ปีที่แล้ว

      It might have something to do with the amount of cavity wax they pump into them. My 4 year old renault traffic is still leaking Brown wax from the drain holes in the panels after a bit of rain.

    Always liked these - I nearly bought an Activa in around 2005 but was a bit scared about the complexity! In actual fact I think they're best suited as a diesel cruiser, strangely like the sound of the old XUD!

    Hi.
    I own a C5 Diesel turbo estate (2003) ..... that i bought for £650 last year !!
    .
    I love the old car but the electrics packed up 2 weeks after buying it and they are haywire !
    .
    The car is so immaculate inside, but i love the idea of a "lazy" diesel French car just eating up motorway miles while achieving over 60 mpg !
    .
    Be great to hear about the C5 also as it looks great ... (and more pretty than an Tesla)
    .
    Cheers :-)
