    That has to be one of the best Savanna's still left in the country. Only about 10 petrol manuals on the road in the UK.

      I remember my neighbours having one of these when I was a kid in a really dark navy blue with blue velour seats. It seemed massive at the time and posh inside. Remember I was only a kid at the time haha. They took our family to the airport in it once. Don't think I've seen another on the road since!

    Got a huge kick of nostalgia to see the Savanna. My dad has three in succession from the late 80s to the mid 90s so plenty of memories of long road trips - first two had the additional row of seats which meant grandparents came along for holidays in France (kids ended up in the back not grandparents of course!) In many ways I’d love to own one now but they’re like hens teeth and often those teeth are rotten. Thanks for sharing this one!

    21's are a time machine car for me, my boss had a 2l petrol and a diesel - we went everywhere in those cars. Diesel was NA iirc, and deathly slow. You're right about the 1.7 being found in Volvo's, my Dad had a 480ES with the same lump. Great nostalgia content James, good work fella!

    The first car I really grew up in was a 1989 Savanna which my parents kept until about 2000 and took us everywhere including to France several brilliant holidays. My mum and grandfather also went through some hatchback 21s including a 1.9D which was hilariously slow but economical. I loved the 21 - aux input and steering wheel controls, remote central locking…
    Thanks for the memories

    I owned a Savannah in the early 2000’s. I loved the cars looks, ride quality and practicability. Sadly as with yours it failed an MOT. Due to serious underbody rot on the subframe and sills . Regrettably I had to let it go as it wasn’t worth repairing. Good to see one again, I haven’t seen one in ages. Good luck with yours 👍

    I'd like to think that I'm quite a car fan but I can honestly say I have never seen either of these cars but they are both almost invisible as in they are both the most beige / vanilla cars ever so even if I have seen them they just aren't memorable. But saying that, these two are absolute beauties and cars aren't all about speed and being the best, they have personalities and I would love to spend time with both of them. Also loving the comment that when you have to streamline a push bike you know you're not driving a sports car. keep up the good work sir, cars aren't just metal and plastic they represent someone's dreams and aspirations.

    That Logo is honestly a cracking car, had a manual as my 1st car which I ended up having for over 5 years until I bought. Something newer last year. Only thing it ever needed on an MOT the was the lamps to be cleaned, it’s a great runaround and a cracking cheap car for someone. My mechanics loved working on it whenever it was in the garage.

    The Renault 21 was sold in the United States as the Renault/Eagle Medallion.
    It came with a 2.2L paired with either a 5spd or 3spd auto.
    My parents owned a station wagon version for almost twenty years.
    Rust and lack of repair/maintenance parts eventually resigned it to the scrap yard.
    It was an extremely comfortable car and although kind of slow once it got to highway cruising speed it was as comfortable and smooth riding as a Cadillac.
    It was fairly reliable until about 100k miles and then it was failure after failure.
    Everything from minor niggles to catastrophic mechanical failures.

I used to work for a Renault dealership when the 21 was launched. and i have to say how impressed with the driving and handling. i would suggest you check the condition of the timing belt and replace. otherwise you fell on your feet with this one. once the work is done. and i can see this car not staying around for very long

    I knew someone who had an early Clio. Nothing flash, but it went & stopped without issue. Failed it's MoT, so she was looking at scrapping it as her usual garage wanted £300 - for a single patch underneath! I suggested she tried a place near me. £70. This is why so many older cars get scrapped. Owners are none the wiser and some unscrupulous garages will always try their luck. Always get a second opinion & price.

      @@michaelsandy3353 yes that’s right I had a 2.0 21 hatch in a Maroon colour, nice car but I skidded into a fallen tree and it was written off. I did here that the models with longitudinal engines had longer wings and bonnets to accommodate everything, only the French would such a thing.

    • @allannicolson2607
      @allannicolson2607 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidmccready6471 There's an even better example of French eccentricity than that. I had a Peugeot 505 GTi estate which I liked a lot - front engine rear drive, based on the previous 504. I later discovered that the saloon version was front wheel drive with a transverse engine!

    • @olli-pekkavuorinen1187
      @olli-pekkavuorinen1187 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2-litre versions had their front wheels some 4" (10cm) further back -you could identify from distance if it was a 1.7 or 2.0. Front wing got very narrow down between the door and front wheel on the 2.0's. I remember reading about this somewhere and the reason for this strange set-up was that Renault didn't have strong enough gearbox available for transverse mounting of the 2.0 engine.

      @sammytheseal2307 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChopsGarage Technical splurge incoming!
      So a lot of the older 8v engines, the valves used to be more flat against the head, and a close to 90 degree angle against the piston, therefore they are less likely (or impossible) to protrude into the area of the piston stroke. They have a larger combustion chamber and subsequently lower compression.
      In contrast, newer 16v engines, 4 valves cannot fit flatly in the cylinder head so are installed at a 45 degree angle to the piston therefore will protrude into the stroke of the piston and allow contact between the two if the timing is incorrect. Not only this, the valves are strategically positioned to improve air flow in order to make the engine more efficient, this makes it difficult to remove the chance of pistons touching valves. As well as that, they have smaller combustion chambers to enable higher compression, again to improve performance and increase efficiency
      Most modern 8v engines (diesels) are interference these days because the combustion chamber is within the piston and the cylinder head face is almost flat with no recess. Compared to older engines which the combustion chamber was a swirl pot, which changes the positioning of everything and subsequently makes them non-interference, or less likely at least.
      Hope that helps and that I haven't bamboozled you! 😂

    My first car was a '89 Renault 19 TXE with the 1721cc, 92 PS I think, one of the first units... The engine was rubbish 😂 The carburettor melted somehow and it had to be rebuilt (apparently the engine wasn't designed for the R19 and that part of the engine bay was too warm for it), then, even doing all the services by the book, the accessories belt broke, getting in between the cambelt and the timing gear, jumping some teeth and the valves kissed the pistons. Apart from that, it consumed a lot. I don't know in mpg, but it was something like 9 litres/100 km on average... In the city it was more like 12 l/100km. But I think this engine was a Frankenstein, since in other cars it had injection, not a carburettor...

    You either like French cars or you don’t. I have had 8 French cars over the years, the seats are just more comfortable than any other car, especially German ones!
    The seven seat ones were well ahead of the game apart from Peugeot who also did a 7 seat estate.

    What a brilliant video. As mentioned on Insta, I love that you found a blue Savanna just like the Erasure song. If you don't drive around pumping that out, you're missing a trick.
    The Honda is a brilliant find. Rare, reliable and a small, cheap auto will find a home quickly, if it hasn't already

    Got to love both of them, I remember seeing yellow ones quite commonly over the years. Not as many now unfortunately

    Last time I saw a savannah was when my mate Martin smiths dad had one new in red and took me to scouts regularly. Can still remember the smell and it always being warm.

    First thing I thought of seeing that was Blue Savanna by Erasure. 😂Spot who was a teenager in the 80's 😀😊

    Those Savannas were proper workhorses. Hard to believe what absolute rubbish Renault ended up building in the 00s when their 90s stuff was absolutely bulletproof.

    Crazy how you found this Renault when a few hours ago I ran across a rare estate car for sale 55 miles from here. What did I find? A 1987 Camry estate for $1,500. Like you I have a...passion(?) for older and uncommon cars. This one is a 2 liter petrol engine car that I assume has an automatic transmission. The outside of this car is " as new ", tho unfortunately some of the plastics of the interior are degraded, such as the cowling around the steering column. Not sure I really need 3 cars, even temporarily.
