    For a speed bump that lenght you'd need to go over 144km/h for the shock to start reducing, so long as the suspension can retract as far as high the speedbump is. If you can find a speedbump about 1 meter long you can reach this critical speed at ~50 km/h

      These aren't your typical speed bumps, where I am in South East London they are very short in terms of length but very high, if you go over them too fast (even as slow as 15-20 mph) you can easily scrape the bottom of your car on the way down the bump, as I did in my previous Mercedes C220.

    • @r.thomassen6285
      @r.thomassen6285 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I agree. My old XM was way more high tech than my newer C5, even though the C5 have hydropneumatic suspension. That fabulous hydraulic brake is replaced with normal brakes, and it is not the same at all. It was just wonderful with that touch pad like brake pedal that had no movement at all. The first time I used the C5, I seriously thought I had lost the brake power, until I learned I had to press the brake pedal hard. Definately not nearly as good. That old XM even had a system to diagnose your car's suspension using the radio. Just tune in a certain wavelength and go for a ride, and you could hear the different things in the suspension and diagnose if they were working or not. And when emergency or hard braking, the XM would not dive forward at all, it was just as flat. It probably was because of the Hydractive, which my C5 does not have, even though it has the same type of suspension.
      And now, they have removed everything, no high-tech left at all. Just cool design and that's it. It is a shame, really, when you look at the history of the brand and how revolutionary cars they used to make. It was not possible to get better cars than a Citroën. So innovative, so cool, so high-tech, so everything. And now, they are just like a Ford, perhaps cooler in the design, but thats more or less all.
      I desperately want their Hydractive suspension back.

    Reminds me of the small but very annoying plastic speed bumps I once encountered in Spain. They put on the road like 3 to 5 of them in a row with less than a meter beetween them. Then I observed the locals taking them at full speed and tried the same. Ideal speed was almost 80 kph so that only the first was keenly felt. In some places this ripped the bumps from the surface of the road. Which made them a lot smoother...

      i would really like to know the explaination of this...
      because here is a road with lot of speedbumps,
      half the sice of the one in the vid,
      and when i go over the first two at 100 kmph its smoother than at 40kmph
      but the last ones feel worse as you go quicker. i need to reduce to 40kmph xd

    • @rshone99
      @rshone99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It depends. I have couple of speed bumps here that are tough to traverse at walking speed. Short sharp bumps. I accidentally went over them at some significant speed once and didn't feel a thing. When you go fast your tire will actually eat the impact rather than the suspension. Humps like the one in the vid apparently are too long for this phenomenon hence hitting the bump stops. Kinda hard to ignore one's own personal experience watching a video like this that is telling you when you felt nothing it was more uncomfortable. The "myth" lives on. I don't drive like this though, I am concerned at what cost my comfort is coming at in terms of suspension components and possibly rims if the bump is just to high or you are just too fast.

    • @peglor
      @peglor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the bump is anywhere near the wheelbase of the car or longer then the car will pitch forward as the front wheels are going down while the back wheels are rising. On shorter bumps the high speed part of the damping circuit in the shock is opened by hitting the bump fast, which will give a better ride. The heavier the body of the car the better too as it take more force to move it up and down suddenly on bumps - making the car really heavy while the wheels and suspension are relatively light is a good part of the reason heavier cars ride more smoothly.

    • @Nbomber
      @Nbomber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CapitanInfernal im not saying that this is the case, but something to think about anyway.
      If you are braking for the speedbump, you are loading up the front suspension. Meaning the car is essentially pushing into the bump, making them rougher.

  • @TheSoundsnake
    @TheSoundsnake 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Love the Citroens :-)
    There’s some truth in this myth, at least with hydropneumatic Citroens. As long as the bump height is fully within the suspension travel, with some margin, faster will smooth them out.
    You’ll need the margin as the suspension stiffens up the closer it comes to its bump stops.
    The older the model, the more travel they have.
    But I know from experience that I can go over a few bumps where we live, with our Xm, without feeling them. Other cars typically scratch their bumpers!

    • @AJ-tj7jm
      @AJ-tj7jm ปีที่แล้ว

      Comfort is one thing, mechanical sympathy is another. Drive slower the less load force on the suspension the longer the shocks and springs last. Hydropnumatic gives a better ride but more expensive to repair, the less load on the suspension to longer it will last.

    As "repawnd" said, it is only true for short speed bumps. The faster you go, the least you feel, since the suspension shock (not being a stiff one) travels up and down very quickly, therefore it barely creates vibrations in the structure. The counterpart is that the less you feel the bump, the more damage you can do to the suspension.

  • @Meckmester
    @Meckmester 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you're going fast over multiple speed bumps in a row, the ride can feel smoother, but it is harsher for the car. In Spain we have many speed bumps that look like a little bit less than half a telephone pole is laying in the road, they are made of plastic and rather uncomfortable to drive over. When there are multiple in a row of them it is sometimes better to just keep your speed up, the first bump will be bad but the rest are better. Big bumps you go slow over, small bumps you go fast, as the expense of the suspension and wheel alignment.

    I can remember when speed humps were in their infancy that in Ayr they had lines of bricks raised and lowered in lines across the road IIRC there were about 15 sets in lines. The slower you drove the rougher the ride, hit them at 30 mph and it was like driving across a cattle grid. They had the exact opposite of the desired effect, faster = smoother. Whoever was in charge at the highways department was clearly not a genius 😂

    The “bumps” here are actually speed hump. There is in fact a defined difference between the two. If you think these are bumps, try coming to the US and see what we have here.

    • @rxss6154
      @rxss6154 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      AJAXBURGER im guessing its because Americans are typically known for buying 4x4’s and much bigger cars, im guessing they’re just compensating the difference in the US so they make the bumps bigger to slow you down more. Hatchbacks and smaller cars here in the UK are more typical so there is less need for a “bigger bump”

    • @Ajaxburger
      @Ajaxburger 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ross Roden your reasoning is logical but if you look into the two, you’ll notice there’s no real reason for them to be the way they are.

      the tyres and suspension gets way more abused everytime you start driving your car than just gg over speed bumps. They are made to take alot of abuse. Plus its recommended to get the alignment checked everytime you replace those worn tyres.

    In Sweden, they invented intelligent speed bumps!! if you drive over the speed limit the sensor will pick it up and the bump would appear as section of the road ahead of you goes down, which will make you slow down but for other road users, who choose to stick to the speed limit will not have to deal with them or have their cars abused just because others chose not go fast.
    But here in the UK, people like these guys are wasting valuable time and money researching how fast can we go over a speed bump

    In Physics Impulse equals force x time.. (i=Ft) which means if a force is applied over a large time limit, then the magnitude of impulse reduces and if applied in a lesser time, impulse increases.. therefore by going faster we reduce the time over which the force of same magnitude is spread out.. hence increasing readings with increase in speed.

    Those are speed humps though, a lot of the speed bumps we get in Canada aren’t smooth like that, they’re these short little rounded curbs of back pain and it doesn’t matter if you’re doing 10 km/h, it’s incredibly jarring at every speed

      It isn't. In reality what this is doing is preventing the car from raising and lowering, and transferring the load to the suspension, so instead of the "up and down" movement that you get with going slowly, you stay level but get large shockwaves, which can be very uncomfortable, not to mention ruins your suspension if it's constantly hitting the bump stops.

  • @stachun83
    @stachun83 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This can be done much better. All you have to do is brake in front of the speedbump, release the brake at the last minute to lift the front suspension and then press the accelerator. In my old Citroen CX I mastered this so that, sitting in the back seat, you didn't even know there was a speedbump.

    the myth can actually work with potholes and stuff like that
    it happened in a video where a guy tried to hit a pothole as hard as possible and he skipped over it so he had to slow down to actually hit it
    and it makes sense from a physics standpoint that you dont have enough time to get the wheel to fall in the hole
    also the suspension of this citroen is better because this type of suspension is better and i dont know why they havent implemented it in other cars

    Realistically the best and unfortunately also the most annoying to others following closely is to crawl over them as slow as possible. With less ground clearance, I am forced to do this to avoid damaging contact to the underside of my car. A gradual flowing slope is better than acute angle slopes, as this reduces the severity of the movement. It's easier on the occupants.

  • @dubaidriver9978

    Keep in mind that it's not only the suspension that gets the hit from speed humps, but it's also the engine & transmission mounts that deteriorate. The slower you approach the speed humps the better. With speed humps (the narrow & tall ones) the speed should be closer to 3mph/5kph - most importantly approach them without having brakes applied.

    To be honest, the conclusion is expected. Negotiate them around 15mph. Even if they discovered that 88mph was a perfect speed to negotiate a bump with minimal disruption to your car and body, they would never reveal that.
    “Traffic calming measures” are there to deliberately slow down traffic in areas where there is a risk to life. For years, a long road that ran the length of the neighbourhood where my Mum lives, was used as a speed strip. After the introduction of speed bumps, the traffic has slowed. Quite good as there is a school along that road and a couple of churches, with housing on both sides of the road.
    Depending on your direction of travel, the bumps approaching the school are shorter and need to be negotiated at about 15mph and as you continue towards the churches, the bumps are longer and can be negotiated at around 20mph.
    The beauty of the system is that it is possible to drive the full length of the road at 20/15mph and cover it within four minutes or so. It’s 1.3 miles long. Why anyone thinks they need to cover it quicker than that and risk killing someone is crazy.
    It’s also quietened the neighbourhood as the sound of loud exhausts is absent.
    Except for the idiots who speed between the bumps -
    They are necessary in most situations. Sometimes they may be installed for other reasons, but generally they are there to reduce accidents.
