    Three quick things:
    1) We bought the car with 479,577 miles on it.
    2) The clutch was replaced (only for the 2nd time) at about 480k.
    3) AWESOME video! Miss the lovely thing. Please let us have it back at some point not too far away… but have your fun with it first!

That’s astonishing clutch life for a TD. I can remember a 306TD where the clutch lasted about 40k. Well, I suppose it had to be motorways didn’t it. Space ship mileage. Probably used to drive to Spain and back. Quite regularly 😂

My daily driver 2001 Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol 8v SX (with panoramic sunroof and aircon) has done 107k. I bought it with 61k on the clock. The rattly gearstick is normal as is the whine in 3rd gear. The good thing - it's exempt from the ULEZ charge in London.
It's been to Cornwall and back, and Isle of Wight multiple times without missing a beat, has been loaded up with furniture to move house, and with rubbish for the tip.
    A few things to add:
    - the backrests on the rear seats can be adjusted to be less upright.
    - the rear seats can be removed completely making it vanlike.
The MK1 models are very simple and bulletproof..
Never a car I wanted but it was cheap when I needed a car. Passes the MOT each year and is easy to service.

We (my wife and I an our two adult children) visited the UK in summer of 2001 and rented a Xsara Picasso for 10 days. At the time I was taken by what Volkswagen had done with the TDI and the 1.9L HDI in our Picasso seemed to spec out almost identically. Living in the US, we had had no access to the PSA brands for decades, so this was our only experience with a Citroën of any sort. The car proved perfect for our needs in terms of comfort, luggage space and fuel economy.

As someone who is completely addicted to french MPVs of the 2000s, I got that "I must have one of these" vibes going on after seeing this.(The go-to-solution for this craving is to get a 1/43-scale model - there are far too many cars I would like to own, I'd soon end up with a car-museum if Ihad the chance to by them all) In many ways similar to the Scenic II I had, but also quite different. Will enjoy the videos on this one for sure. And I totally agree on what you say about SUVs vs MPVs. I have driven many SUVs in my job and absolutely every one of them sucks compared to the MPVs I have owned and own now. I guess the only major flaw with an MPV is that they don't let the driver show how manly he is - apparently that is important, for some reason...

The Xsara Picasso underneath is actually a Berlingo, as you state somewhere at the start of the driving impressions. The car followed the design concept Xanae, which was much more stylish and hinted at more upmarket ambitions. The designers themselves followed this up with the much simplified “Berlingo Bulle” that hinted at what the initial idea had become behind the scenes. For the Picasso is in some ways the last car of the Jacques Calvet era at PSA. Calvet’s approach to innovation was to let others do it, and observe patiently if they had been right or wrong, and come up with a copycat product when they’d got it right. That’s how Matra’s Espace ended up a Renault, and PSA didn’t come up with an MPV until the mid-90s.
By then, Renault had come up with the Scénic, and PSA could use something to counter it. But Calvet still didn’t trust the newly emerging segment and demanded the car be developed on a shoestring budget. Hence the Berlingo underpinnings, the extremely cheap plastic trim and lack of pleasantness in touch and feel.
However, the rather long wheelbase and well set up suspension made them very comfortable and they handled discreetly, although German car testers detected a tendency to breaking away in oversteer if you lifted the foot or, worse, braked in a fast bend. It was only two years after Mercedes’ first attempt at front wheel drive had needed an ESC in similar situations, which had been discovered by Scandinavians and not Germans, so the Germans took it out on French cars for retaliation... because it took some time to fit ESC to the French cars, thanks to the Calvet approach. Memories....

    Brings back memories.
In 2000 a work colleague replaced his 1.9D ZX with a new Piscasso 2.0HDi. We used to car share and I often drove the Piscasso, at the time had a '97 Polo 1.9D and the Piscasso was very quiet, smoothe and spritely in comparison. In 2002 I got a Clio DCi and that made the Piscasso feel a bit soft, it did suffer from side winds on the motorway. When it was a few years old it had a recall for potential broken front springs and the turbo boost pipe blew off making an impressive wooshing sound but not apprently effecting performance.

Great video. My 110bhp Desire was an utter dream and the most reliable car I have ever owned in 50 years of driving. The wipers will park to the outside of the screen edges and you can put a frost blanket between them, really clever touch. They don't make good weird cars like this anymore. Great for cruising the roads of Europe, every holiday was so easy. Bags of room.

I always thought this is what you should have bought, rather than the Berlingo...
We've had five Xsara Picasso's in our family, two 2.0hdi, two 1.6hdi and a 1.6i. Without question they are the most comfortable, reliable and practical cars we have ever owned. The interior space, in relation to the exterior footprint proved time and again that the SUV concept is a success of marketing over common sense. I know a lot of people with much larger SUV's that have much less space inside. The flexibility of the rear seats being up, folded, tipped or removed, the acres of space, the useful cubby holes, the shopping trolley, the vast glass area. It was a suberb design, and far better than the C4 Picasso that followed. I would still happily trade our C4 Picasso for a good, late model Xsara one.

We had several Picassos and Berlingos as holiday rentals in the 'noughties'. I predict that on long journeys you will prefer the quieter, smoother Picasso but day to day, do it all, around town and typical use the Berlingo will conquer (and probably be the final winner). Enjoy!

I had 2 of them, one being the only brand new car I ever bought, absolutely loved it. The internal trim was terrible though, I'm sure the plastic started squeaking on the second day of my owning it, but you can't argue with that amount of storage, and the 1.6HDi sipped fuel like a hummingbird. Depreciation on the thing was astounding, main reason my only new car 😀

Had 58 miles on the clock now 170k. Its been to Barcelona, Milan, south of France numerous times, Monaco and LeMans 24 twice.
Its transported 2 Porsche 924 engines. Umpteen tip runs fully loaded. Absolutely fantastic car. Apart from tyres pads etc the only part to fail is one coil pack.

I had 2 of them including the VTR sporty one when the kids were little. Brilliant cars. Only prob is that the windscreen have a genuine very thin layer of gold in the lamination to reduce heat soak through that massive screen. In the old days of Tom Tom sat nav, the golden windscreen stopped the Tom Tom seeing the sat. So you had to buy the external aerial and run the cable through the door seal! Good old days.

Citroen and Peugeot really ought to be commended for the quality of their diesel engine cars.
We have had a few in our family.
My Dad had a 2.0 litre Peugeot 405 turbo GLD, my brother had a 1.9 turbo diesel Citroen ZX and I have a Citroen c3 1.4 HDi.
Very robust don't really take a lot of looking after, surprisingly comfortable, plenty of room and storage space and all over good value for money.

For half a million miles this is in mint condition. Look around at cars that have done far less and look like a shed in comparison. The MPV segment died well before it's time I think, these were so versatile cars. I guess one of the last surviving if the MPV breed is the Berlingo along with the other manufacturers clones based on the same car. That interior is also a big surprise that it has stayed together as well as it has. Many thanks for sharing.

I had one - a petrol Desire model loved it to bits. Did 30 odd K miles in it and on just over 100k it developed an oil leak and I got stage fright and moved it on. Since that time I realised what a stupid move that was as it was probably an easy fix .
Plus side it enabled me to experience similar joy with a high mile Scenic - happy days,
Thing with it is if you fall for it act fast - all the good ones are being worn smooth - I would have had another but just couldn't find one in the condition I wanted.

Well done ian and Carly a great review on the Picasso
We have only but great memories of our four we had in the family and a c4 Picasso mk1 and 2
They are such capable cars and comfortable and work horses anything you needed them to do they did and comfortable at munching the miles
They are great sitting up high and you can see so much with all the glass
Just to pick up on trims to start with you had the LX SX and exclusive and on the facelift cars you had the Desire and exclusive
The instruments were great and the first car I know you could change mph to kph with a touch of a button
I would still love to see one on the hubnut fleet would be great for you with bob!

True, all true. I have been contemplating swapping my 1.6 Diesel for a petrol-hybrid. I'd miss the huge boot, and switching cannot be justified, as the Picasso is super-efficient already. If you set the controls to show your current mpg, it will help you to adjust your driving style to achieve even higher mpg. I get 45mpg without trying, but can achieve 60mpg by employing a few tricks, such as:
      1. Accelerate slowly
      2. Coast down hills
      3. Don't drive too fast.

We had the 1.9 hdi on a 2005 plate and only got rid of it a couple of years ago. Moved down to Devon with it and it was uber reliable car. Replaced with a Nissan Qasqai 1.5dci 2010 and that has had the following fail - starter motor, windscreen wiper motor, harmonic balancer(crank shaft pulley), egr valve, rear offside parking brake fell apart in handbrake drum, passenger window motor. Not bad for a 12 year old car lol.

Great review Ian, they are a roomy car and very practical and with the HDI 2 litre engine can get a decent move on,
500,000 miles is a feat for any car, not impossible though as this car shows, it must have been loved and well serviced and needed for nothing in its earlier years, a lot of these cars were scrapped once they’d reached 150,000 as they got too expensive to keep them in good health.
I think the mileage is certainly a credit to its former keepers, if more owners took the same cars more of these would still be on the road now.
    Thanks for the review.👍
