Love the videos. We occasionally see some oddball French cars over from Saint Pierre et Miquelon here in Newfoundland. Always a joy to see with their distinctive SPM plates. I'm a bit partial to the older cars, myself, with a history that includes a '92 Daewoo Espero while living in Korea, an '84 Chevrolet Caprice Classic from an uncle in Ohio, and the lovely Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis (land yachts). God help me, I'm now in an Outback. Keep up the good work!
I didn't like the front when it came out, but it's grown on me over the years. I always liked the rear styling of the estates. I hope you will enjoy it for a long time.
sadly Ian, it doesn't have air con, just a button marked "Auto". Iv'e had mine for about 7 years, it replaced my Xantia. The C5 is a great car for "Lounging" around the streets, and if you push it can surprise you. MPG averages out around 50-55. Engines are bulletproof, mines done around 134,000, doesn't use oil and quite quiet. Soundproofing is excellent. Rust isn't a problem as the shell is galvanised. Problems to look out for, are, front calipers can seize on, internal door handles break off ( you'll find the door won't open from inside on the first attempt and someone not used to this will pull harder and break the handle, but if you immediately try again "gently" it opens fine ) the crankshaft pulley wears out and can cause a loud ticking as its dual mass. Armrests are strange, if you move them slowly, they lock properly. All in all the C5 is a very strong car (mines been crashed into several times and written off but structurally its sound.
Ha! Cheapskate air con. Amazing. EDIT - No, checking the spec, it definitely did have Automatic Air Conditioning when new. Suspect it's just run out of gas. Question is how long ago?
We had a 2.0hdi Picasso, over 4 years it averaged 47mpg, the best trip was a 185 mile round trip to Heathrow at an average of 57mpg. C5, very HubNut, you get a vote of approval from our house!
Looks like an ideal daily driver, a perfect addition to the fleet. Its practical, comfortable, and the DW10 is near bulletproof too. 35 mpg sounds a bit low though, it should be doing more than that. You can easily squeeze more power out of those engines if you find it a bit underpowered as it is.
ian, knowing your love of citroens, and how u want the space comfort and float, i am surprised u didnt get a c5 estate earlier lol. towbar so caravan, loads of space for the tip runs. think she might be a keeper!
That is a good swap. Newer and lower miles and a bigger car. I love this sort of car. I have a 2002 Mercedes E class estate 2l supercharged with manual gearbox, cloth seats and dents galore and 170k miles
Yess.... welcome to the C5 club, I think they are brilliant cars, great comfortable quiet motorway cruisers, I hope yours turns out to be as good as the 3 I have owned, I currently run a Mk2 estate as my daily driver.
Had a few (hired) C5 saloons in 2002/3. Nice enough to drive, don't think I ever had one that didn't have something wrong it, but that might be more reflection on Avis than Citroen
An excellent choice Ian! My folks had a 2002 C5 back when it was new. Base model (LX?) saloon with the slightly underpowered 1.8 petrol engine. A bit sluggish off the mark and not much in the way of toys beyond manual air con and that odd Trafficmaster thing, but what a lovely, roomy, comfy thing it was. Ride quality was excellent. Despite all the cliches, it was reliable too! In 5 years it never needed anything more than routine servicing and one new battery.
Excellent choice. I’ve driven tens of thousands of miles in these, business trips of 600+ miles a day, family holidays with and without caravans in tow. These are cars you have to experience to know what’s good about them. Not much to look at, not extremely refined either. But acres of space, bags of ride comfort, and incredible staying power on long distances. You just don’t get tired in these as quickly as in other cars. Btw, the Xantia interior may have been prettier than the C5, but beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
Interesting car, looking forward to seeing how you get on with it. I was expecting something comfortable and French so wasn't entirely surprised. Can see a caravan stuck to the back of it soon! Certainly more interesting and characterful than the Primera but unlikely to be as trouble free perhaps? I wish you many happy miles in your new 'old bus'!
Hell yes! My family owns the mk1 C5 sedan from new so I'm looking forward to videos. We're looking to replace it so I might inherit it. We had it for 20 years now and it served the role of a comfortable diesel family barge great. Truth be told, it's becoming a bit of a problem these days but hey, which 20 year old car isn't.
A real Hubnut car...winter tyres in the back...good treat in the front, trim missing etc...es the perfect mix indeed. Tinkering on a C5...rather you than me🤣 Comfort lover Ian, time to find a real US boat from the 70 and 80's. Bigger....better and more comfortable than a floating carpert. Thats something you needed put in yre car fleet. 🤩
Yes! I guessed right! The C5 is a soft, wafty lounge chair compared to the Primera. I can't wait to see how you get on. The biggest down side is all the electronics that can go wrong. Good luck with Chloe the C5 ;-)
Now that is hubnut! Super practical, comfortable and ideal for towing caravans! And yes, Carly will be shopping for caravans once she sees this. Just accept it man!
Ian mrs hubnut will be happy what a perfect vehicle for towing a caravan with loads of room for dogs luggage and Hublets awesome and pump up rear suspension too
Few of my friends had these c5s, and one of them still uses his. 2.0HDi if maintained properly can do over 200 thousand miles easily. 2.2 HDi has 230 000 and still drives very nice.
Your engagement with 'the viewer' is superb, we could have been sitting right there in the passenger seat 👍I always thought C5 was a good looking huge estate car not as out an out Citroen as the wacky CX Estate though
One of the most comfortable cars I've owned,....back in 2002, apart from the Xantia and various BX's, oh, and let's not forget the lovely ZX too. Excellent choice Mr Ian. Now make this a keeper, sell some of those others that clearly are never going to see the road again, and use the money and extra time and MUCH needed space, to maintain this and the other beauts' you have. A future classic, in fact, I think it may already be one.
I owned a C5 2.2 auto for two years really good roomy car it averaged 50ish mpg it was on a51 plate only had to go when it developed suspension leaks it was going to cost more than the car was worth to repair it that was six years ago, would still be running it today if that haven’t have happened.
The MKI C5 has a special place in my heart, lovely comfobarge. Struts on tailgate are under the headlining and a nightmare job! Temp sensor sender on lower right of engine as you look in. They love a crankshaft pulley, always buy OEM, aftermarkets last 5 minutes. It shouldn't be crashy over potholes, if it is then the spheres need changing, they are sublime over all roads and fly over road humps without issue. If there's a lot of vibration on the engine check the engine/gearbox dogbone mount underneath. I had a 2.2hdi so some things may be slightly different.
I TOLD you to get one of these to replace Rita! I have a 2010 C5 X7 (the sedan that looks like a hatchback) with the 2.0l 160 ps HDI 16. That goes well enough! It also has Hydractive 3+ which works as advertised. I get around 1000 km from a 71l tank, commuting on 60-80 km/h signposted roads. You have plenty of room now for the HubNut clan, and you don't need a caravan, you can sleep in the car! I look forward to more of your adventures.
I've had six C5s over the years and have covered more than 100k with them. They all varied greatly but I enjoyed each one. I had an identical 52 plate SX 110 HDi Estate in silver and a hatchback of the same year at the same time. The hatch went very well, the estate was hard work, less economical and much slower. The facelift C5 from 2005 onwards was the sweet point, better styling, better spec and a much better 2.0 HDi 138hp engine, I had three of those.
Trashed in every gear especially fully laden with kids etc always from French tollbooths. Leaving Hook of Holland at 8 got to downtown Prague (again absolutely fully packed) in time for tea. Happy Days. If you ever tire of it (doubt it) let me know... Seriously Neil
On the off chance that anyone's boot button (to raise/lower) doesn't work, you can cannibalise one of the rear door window switches to fix it. I fixed mine that way, it's a bodge, but it works, the buttons themselves are rare/expensive on eBay where as the window ones are more available (or free if you nick one from in the car)

I have a 406 with the same engine... A quick plug in and electronic tickle up improved it immensely! Approx 140hp instead and so much more torque!!
Leaving your case in the boot of the old car? Exactly what I'd do, absolutely great entertainment, thanks Ian!!
Wooooo C5 proper hubnut Nice work Ian!
ian, knowing your love of citroens, and how u want the space comfort and float, i am surprised u didnt get a c5 estate earlier lol. towbar so caravan, loads of space for the tip runs. think she might be a keeper!
A friend of mine had a C5 it went through 3 ECU's in the space of 5 years hope you don't suffer any major problems Ian
That is a good swap. Newer and lower miles and a bigger car.
I love this sort of car. I have a 2002 Mercedes E class estate 2l supercharged with manual gearbox, cloth seats and dents galore and 170k miles
What a properly EXCELLENT choice. Comfort, space, economy and totally Hubnutty!!! 👍 👍 👍
When you said comfortable in the last video, my first thought was C5. How very Hubnut! Love it!
Yess.... welcome to the C5 club, I think they are brilliant cars, great comfortable quiet motorway cruisers, I hope yours turns out to be as good as the 3 I have owned, I currently run a Mk2 estate as my daily driver.
Btw, the Xantia interior may have been prettier than the C5, but beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
good choice. Good family car by all accounts. You'll like the estate with the family very practical. Tow bar super handy as well.
Yes Ian...I think this might be a very practical solution for you guys!
I think Ian is definitely masochistic when picking his cars.
Tinkering on a C5...rather you than me🤣
Comfort lover Ian, time to find a real US boat from the 70 and 80's. Bigger....better and more comfortable than a floating carpert. Thats something you needed put in yre car fleet. 🤩
One of the most comfortable and quiet cars I’ve ever driven, it was a 2010 2.0 diesel.. so economical, never had any trouble with it ..
Yes! I guessed right! The C5 is a soft, wafty lounge chair compared to the Primera. I can't wait to see how you get on. The biggest down side is all the electronics that can go wrong. Good luck with Chloe the C5 ;-)
Sure, sure. Ditch the trusty, reliable and capable Japanese car for one that will be chock full of “challenges”. Makes perfect sense.
Now that is hubnut! Super practical, comfortable and ideal for towing caravans! And yes, Carly will be shopping for caravans once she sees this. Just accept it man!
Lovely Jubbly, nice car Mr HubNut, bit of tinkering/cleaning you'll have a lovely Citroën.
Good luck Ian. Excellent choice and I hope you keep hold of this one.
Ian mrs hubnut will be happy what a perfect vehicle for towing a caravan with loads of room for dogs luggage and Hublets awesome and pump up rear suspension too
I like it! Also, I had a thought for a name: Sinclair C5, St Clare C5, Clare the C5. Happy wafting.
Citroënella would be a good name just in case it turns out to be a lemon.
my c5 is called sebastian
Or Clive, the C5.
@@peterfinucane8122 Sir Clive.
Good buy. My 2003 1.8i-16V liftback has been a joy to own for the 5 or so months i have had it, does kind of lack the power though.
I had one between 03-06. You’re brave! And if you think the SX is lowly, I had the LX 90bhp!
Tres Hubnût! Nice find.
Ahh the good old DW10 8 valve. Brilliant engine. Much better than the modern 16 valve units.
Yes!!!! Thank you for taking my suggestion under consideration 🙏🙏🙏 Enjoy!!
Εσύ το πρότεινες Κωνσταντίνε το Citroen;
Yes!!!! I'm very pleased with this change. I wish I had one myself :D
Looks surpisingly good! Enjoy.
I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for big Citroens. Never owned one but I really liked the first model C5. Looking forward to this journey with you.
The bag thing. I’m so glad that you can show others like yourself (eg me) that doing extremely daft things can happen to any of us. I’m very capable of acts of extreme incompetence at a moments notice. Keep doing what you do 👍🏼
Mine, an 02 110LX diesel did 180k in 7 years before I broke the gearbox but only dropped off the DVLA last year.
Trashed in every gear especially fully laden with kids etc always from French tollbooths. Leaving Hook of Holland at 8 got to downtown Prague (again absolutely fully packed) in time for tea. Happy Days.
If you ever tire of it (doubt it) let me know... Seriously
Neil
Congratulations! Comfort and room aplenty! And a tow bar for caravan or tvvc trailer!
Big car & tow bar I see a caravan on its way. Miss Hubnut will be pleased
