    To be fair I preferred the first one. But they both sounded fantastic

      Yeah… the more expensive chain sounds markedly better to me. But the stock version is certainly decent enough!

      I noticed more clarity on the highs on the first video. The second wasn't bad, but not the same

    I watch a lot of explainer videos on various topics related to recording, and this is one of the best I've seen. Quick and to the point. Thanks!

    Dude, all this time reason has had that desser in it!?!?!? I have been dessing manually this whole time! You just saved me so much time thank you man and God bless you in Jesus name. Subbed.

    • @mikefishmusic

      I used to do it manually too! Dude it was grueling. I spent like $30 on this de-ess plugin by selig like 8 years ago and use it on EVERY vocal track. I don’t work for them. But man you just turn a knob up and it’s gone.

      to be fair, manual de-essing sounds better on really sibilant vocalists.

    Glad others are doing this. I love the built in compressor with the SSL Mixer on Reason. Still don't quite understand threshold, but I notice I get a better sound on my vocals (alt hip-hop) when I'm at least 10:1 on the ratio, though it depends on the song and delivery.

    Good video, put Reason 12 and Reason Studios in the description because just the word Reason's wont show up when people search for Reason videos. My suggestion of a video title is "Reason 12 How to Master you Vocals like a Pro | Reason Studios"

    Freaking great video. I have a couple basic plug-ins but don't even know how to use it. Your theory behind applying the stock plug ins and associated settings has thought me a lot. Now to go try it. I'm bookmarking the video. Thanks,

    Its cool you mentioned the myth buster. People needing this expensive whatever to finally elevate their recordings.
    Learn with what you have and what you can afford.
    Its a hundred times better than anything that old school recrds used.
    And just because your heros had certain gear, dont copy verbatim. They found what worked for them to get their vibe.
    You need to find the things that resonate with you.
    Thk you for sharing your insights

    So..I noticed you don’t use the built in EQ that comes on the stems?

    • @_thomaswarburton
      @_thomaswarburton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and the reason is that I want the EQ after the 1176 compression but I also want more compression after the EQ. The built in channel EQ can go before channel inserts or after, you could set it up so it comes before the inserts(compression) but I like doing it how JV does it..

    Only thing I would add is a bit of noise gate from the channel strip, in case the compression adds some noise between phrases.

    • @_thomaswarburton
      @_thomaswarburton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good suggestion. I'm usually so meticulous about cutting out that stuff between phrases that I don't need a gate 🤙

  • @robobass25

    This is a great and quite simple explanation on how to get better sounding vocals! Thanks mate! Haven’t used Reason in a looong time since 3!!! Before ya could do any kind of vocals without any other DAWs running at the same time! I’ve only just got reason 12 and discovering what it can do. It’s so full on! But I’ll get my head around it soon enough. What mic do you recommend to get to use for both vocals and instrument recording? I’m just thinking the Rødes large condenser usb mic with shock mount and pop filter with a stand yeah? That way can record anything without too much messing around

    Something that's never mentioned, (also thanks, it's a good video) is that the vocal and other instruments fight for space in the mix. An easy way to work on that is with the hpf/lpf on the channel strip. Kick that on for every channel.
    Then, solo each channel and remove all the excess bottom and top from the guitars, basses, drums, etc. you may Even find that guitars etc. mixed to an almost am radio sounding lack of bottom or top end allows them to sit into the mix better.
    When the excess bass from the drums, bass, guitar and your voice are removed, it mixes like cake batter.
    Dave with the top end, not only they but the hpf removes a lot of excess room reverb from bedroom vocals.
    Yes I might make you a video maybe

    @rodrigoperes4805 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tend to avoid using non-native plugins in most cases as the native tools are excellent in their own right. For example, I only use the native compressor, limiter, EQ and Stereo Imager because their quality is absurdly excellent.

  • @user-uh2cr9so8l
    @user-uh2cr9so8l ปีที่แล้ว

    The first one was unfortunately distinctly better to my ears - and I only have stock reason plugins 😔. I think that chain could still be improved though!
    E.g. Do away with MCLASS compressor, the latest reason allows you to use the master bus compressor as an insert FX, and I generally find that sounds much nicer.
    Also, for the EQ, an alternative perspective is to remove the bad sounding frequencies or frequencies that have the least useful information, rather than trying to boost in multiple places. Then you can turn the whole track up! The first thing I always try and remove is the bass with a high pass filter (but I didn't see one in this video?).

    Get a good mic first then get plug-ins if you are not satisfied with free ones. Trust me I have struggled for years until I get my Telefunken M80 before I was using Rode NT-1A with capsule changed to RK12 one yet it did not sound good enough for me cause of NT-1A's circuit bump on 4 and 5,6 khz which was ugly ear bleeding highs on my voice.When I got the Telefunken M80 everything changed

    Reason have enough include Rack Extension to not having the need of external VST and they are plenty of optional Rack Extension you can tweak and use, the only pack i use as VST was the one that Arturia give me with my Audiofuse 8 Pre and there MIDI control keyboard , reason already give me anything i need i buy those Softube Rack Extension for more than 100 euros and they are still in use, new user are lucky to have those for nothing with the new formula Reason+ , i dont need those because im using to buy each upgrade every two years, hope we still have the choice of reason + or reason offline.
