coming from someone who also records their own vocals, it's comforting knowing people who are in the professional music business don't always do stuff in one take even if they're able to. I've been using these techniques and didn't even know they were an accepted practice

My current way of things! Recording my self! I make sure every not is on key and in time! That's what makes a perfect song! Autotune is just there to beautify
@@Ogechukwu101 No. What makes a great song is the creativity behind it. It has nothing to do with how on time or in tune is the song performed. Just take a listen to any Beatles record and let me know if every note is perfectly on key or in time. It isn't, and that is what makes it special
@@Ogechukwu101 "perfect" can have two different meanings. perfection in terms of everything perfectly quantised and on time and each element perfectly in tune is technically perfect, but that doesn't mean the song is good. The other commenter said it well. A great song has everything to do with creativity.

when you are talking about 180 or 42 etc layers of vocals, do you mean like that insane number of vocal layers going at the same time to create a fuller sound or like 40 layers across the song overall where some part of the song might have 4 and some 8 layers for example? I'm asking cause I was thinking that having like 6 concurrent vocal layers was pretty crazy and when I heard 180 of them I just got completely confused like wtf xd@@GamerHub

I thought I was cheating by doing my vocals this way, but this motivates me that I'm not the only one doing this lol. I quit for a while because I tried to make myself organically sing everything perfectly and I tired myself out after hours of takes.
Same story here dude. After all, producing is about sounding good, whatever it takes. And singing organically like Alicia Keys does takes a lifetime for people like me lol.

same exact thing here. need to realize that its about sounding good over trying to be the best singer out there, especially if you are newer to singing and take inspiration from amazing vocalists like Michael Jackson who's been singing at a world-class level since he was a kid
we live in a modern world. we don't send letters to the loved ones anymore cause now we can just text them right away. although some people would say those 'letters' felt more valuable and full of emotions. but why walk out of a good song just cause you're unable to sing it perfectly? ...my point is, taking help from technology isn't a bad thing

Just the vocal editing alone takes me an entire day. Align, Melodyne, print, de click, automate breaths, auto tune, print.
I think all this comes down to patience. As new artists, we get so excited to put out new music. If we would just spend that little extra time. That can take a good song to a hit with tweaks.

I started splitting verses and chorus's up into sections and diff takes and it has helped my production alot so i'm glad to see charlie teaching the same method gives me confidence !

Im not usually the type to buy a course but goddamn, Charlie knows his shit and explains it so well I might have to try this one. I'm not personally a fan of his music either but his process has got to be one of the most inspiring I've seen. He's a true musician.
Do NOT buy it unless you have at least some experience in production prior, I took it and while i understood it because I had been producing for two years already at the time, if you’re completely new he does not water it down or explain the basics at all so it can get extremely confusing very quickly

@@fucuszullanti7877 just the way he talks about plugins but doesn’t actually explain what they are, so if you already know what they’re doing it’s very helpful to know what his settings are but if you don’t know what they do it probably wouldn’t make any sense is one example

Probably isn't the one to buy. I've seen a couple videos on how weird this course is. Personally, I'd spend the money on someone else's course.

Your didactic skills match your obvious musical gift (which works like a charm with the unasuming way you bring it to the camera, in my opinion), great patience, well versed DAW/workflow/instrument fluency/interfacing, and wow! ... your creativity (multi timbre "hopes up" layers). Married to technical ability (and enviable familiarity with your equipment), I believe all viewers have their hopes up now. Well done.
I'd love to see his approach to panning group vocals...making it sound as organic as possible, and as wide as possible.
It's great seeing that the process is the same for everyone.

This is great! I feel like this also demonstrates the importance of vocal technique for singers. Yes Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien (Mostly) used the distancing technique on Michael, but Michael also sang full phrase's of lyrics. The word by word technique used here should not be confused as something that Michael Jackson did as a vocalist/recording artist in the recording booth. But surely the mic techniques, which is mostly credit to recording engineer Bruce Swedien, I've also learned is a neat trick. Singers, it is still VERY important to KNOW HOW to sing as oppose to being only "able" to hold a pitch. KNOW what you're trying to do with your voice/instrument.

Super professional the only thing I don't like about Pop is the polished vocal sound. His voice is amazing and would probably sound even better without tuning. I know it's part of today's sound but I always think about those old singers and how different the feel would be if someone tuned them. I can't stand my own voice with tune but it's tolerable when it's natural

For the ones wondering about why A is better to tune to C# I think that is because it's a mayor 3rd. Tried several times with other notes and my self-learned explanation is that it shares frequencies within the chord or the main structure of the scale that has the note/harmony you want to transpose. I'm not sure if I'm talking bs here but it worked for me
Actually no… it’s transposed anyway so no frequency stays the same, il would have worked just as well with another note. It all depends of his vocal range and the timbre he wants the note to have

For people wondering about the mic it’s a U47 which is expensive but telefunken also makes a TF47 for 1800 and warm audio has a WA47 for 1000 which I’ve reviewed on my channel. It’s great! You can get a great sound with a cheaper mic so don’t let this detour you.
Interesting... How much should I spend on pro LDC mic? Maybe not U47 clone but pro sounding, detailed mic with no compromise in sound? Thanks!
@@jbaranowski1990 There are so many mics that sound great that don’t cost too much. It just depends on your situation, do you have everything else you need? Audio interface, Acoustic treatment etc. I would recommend budgeting for a mic and preamp if you can, not totally necessary but definitely worth it. Lauten Audio has some great mics like the LA320 and Atlantis, the telefunken TF29 is a great choice. Warm audio has some good ones like the CX12. Charlie is a real genius. He knows things but when describe to normal people like us, it can sometimes get confusing
I know nothing about music but I sense this guy knows his stuff.
As a singer and someone who understands the advantages of utilizing modern resources to sound the best we can (like limitless tracks for example) and also someone who's a singer that isn't "pitch perfect" but realistic, doing repeated takes to get that one good take, singing the same part 50 times in 20 different ways to nail what he wants, I really appreciate the transparency that comes with making a good song. Feel like the "illusion" of singers these days is meant to be broken and exploited to show everyone that nobody's perfect. We're not all idk frank sinatra or something but it doesn't take away from our musicality or talent and I love how someone as prolific as Charlie Puth sorta shines a light onto what makes an artist an artist these days. Not to take away from his talent because as a singer alone dude has the voice of an angel but I also play a producer role as most indie artists do these days. It's not all rhinestones and gems we have bad days where our range is lacking, we have some notes that we struggle to hit, and I do feel that as an ARTIST we're multifaceted and I think this too should have a light shined on it cuz it ain't easy making it all work and make sense and all in all really appreciate as I said earlier just the transparency that comes with making a good song a good song. Feel the public has a misconception of the work that goes on behind the scenes and I applaud him for giving tutorials with the talent he has and notoriety he has to shed some light on how things are actually done. That "movie magic" if you will. Dudes a great musician and I applaud y'all for sharing some tips to help the rest of us make them dreams come true.

How does he keep stacking vocals without the volume getting too loud after each one is added? Everytime I try each one makes it louder and louder, I guess I could adjust the volume of each after every new one I add, but there has to be a better way, thanks anyone
It's possible that the channels that he's pulling the vocals to are lower in gain. It's totally normal when you record a double vocal that things get louder.
So for example if you got one lead and want to record 8 (or more doubles), just take the channels of the 8 dubs and pull the volume down. I’m 99.9% sure he does it exactly the same.
