    So few people noticed that behind the crazy editing skills and amazing artistic design, Max Headroom was one of the best satirists of his time, and covered more controversial topics than almost anyone in the 80's. This guy was amazing....and then he got a tv show and a movie that completely threw all of that out.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      The TV show came first, "This is Edison Carter. Live and direct." In the near future corporations took over everything. Mostly the Zik-Zak Corp. which owned Network 23. Edison Carter was a news reporter who was trying to expose the Corporations, that basically will do anything for ratings. Reporters were their own cameramen, and they had their own producers back at the network that helped them, and found clues on where he should check around at. Edison was running from some guys, jumped on a motorcycle, and sped out of a parking garage. He crashed into them toll gate, fell off, got knocked out. The last thing he saw was a sign that said MAX. HEADROOM 3 METRES (I think it was around 3). Then all the weird sci-fi things that can happen that back fed most of Edison's memories into the computer matrix. Thus Max was born. A manifestation of a computer glitch with a weird sense of humor. He would break into broadcasts anytime he felt the urge. Tried to "stop him", until they saw the ratings.
      Later on, the (real) network the show was on, gave him is own real talk show. Loved the series, I think it was one of the first shows SciFi Network had.

      Cody Cullum Actually the British TV movie came first, followed by Max's appearances in commercials which shot the character to stardom, followed by the short lived TV series based off the movie, and finally the cable TV Max Headroom show.

    Y'all kids need to understand that the idea behind Max was grappling with a tech revolution. In 88 (or whenever) WWW hadn't even been written yet and though we knew the future was in cyberspace nobody knew what that was. This was a pretty big deal historically. Sampling was new, remix didn't exist yet, this was the bleeding cutting edge. Don't taunt Sumerians over primitive writing and don't dis Max Headroom. He came true.

    • @XHALE303
      @XHALE303 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Not exactly, the 1st sampler came out in 1970 (the mellotron) & the Fairlight in 1979, remixing existed for years, about every ''original'' dance/disco/newwave/eletrofunk song or 12" u know since 1975 was remixed/re-edited before it was released, from Tom Moulton, Lee Scratch Perry, Arthur Baker, Shepp Pattybone, Jellybean, Ben Liebrand, Art of Noise, Donna Summer, Devine, Shannon, Yello, FunFun, Grandmaster flash & Herbie Hancock, even the Beatles pitched their voice/lyrics in most songs after recording which is a form of re-edit or remix....& internet existed already in 88 but only for FBI/CIA, not for the public yet....hey just saying :)

      flatshade I agree. And editing all the glitches must have been a time-consuming process. More modern shows that rely heavily on glitch humor like "Time and Eric Awesome Show Great Job" have been greatly influenced by the "Max Headroom" folks. They were pretty cutting-edge for their time.

      Yes, making that many quick cuts on a linear editing system gets tedious fast...and there is little to no margin for error if you mess up, but the effect was quite the eye-catcher at the time.

    • @intvnut
      @intvnut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When I learned in the late 80s it wasn't CGI, I was slightly bummed, because I wanted computers to be more awesome than they were.
      But, by the time I saw all the stories of what it actually took to make it happen, my respect for what they did shot way up. The heavy latex and fiberglass and what-not... that sounds absolutely grueling!
      Matt Frewer was under all that heavy-ass crap after hours getting prepped, and still had to be funny.
      If it were CGI, then you could have a team of folks tweaking the CGI, and Matt would just have to read lines.

People used to wonder if it really was a computer lol if you can believe that. I didn't catch it a lot being active and discovering girls but loved it. That said, comparing Trump to a computer is an insult to all computers. Even the TRS 80 is smarter than Trump (and the TRS80 had no memory, if I recall computer history correctly). At least computers are an invaluable asset to our society. Trump would be more at home in the 1700's when you could own slaves, be legally justified in beating your wife, and could rape a woman and then have her punished for being an adultress. Oh, and you could be a fucking asshole and still be considered a hero (think founding fathers-most of which owned other human beings). Trump should really be banished to the 1700's to die of infection or dysentery or whatever they had in those days.

      @Sgt. J. Christos Exactly. The rest of you, look him up. He's actually a great actor who has been cast in many of your favourite movies. You just didn't know it was him. He now owns a small farm in British Columbia, but still makes appearances in film from time to time. Great guy in real life too.

      Carrey has been at it since the early 80s. He was known in comedy clubs and the late night circuit.

      Yes, Jim Carry is just an unoriginal hack doing bad impressions of Matt Frewer.

    Only ever saw Max Headroom once - late night SBS TV in Australia way back then. Loved it!

    The concept of Max Headroom being an avatar that (more or less) infiltrates networks was WAY ahead of its time. I personally would be happy to have him take over the internet and he'd be a load more fun than Siri :-)

      Unlike TV, the internet is not broadcast from a station. Like Soylent Green, the internet is people.
