If I had to bet my life on someone finishing a chance, it would be Jimmy Greaves. He's the best ever in the top flight, but they airbrush him out by pretending the game started with the Premier League.
Prime example of then and now - a jokes made about a recovering alcoholic “sipping a Guinness” it’s laughed off and forgotten quicker than it was said - today he would probably have to make a grovelling apology to the Twitter mob and be given absolute hell by the “be kind brigade” much better times and a much better game back then 👍
Greaves...quite simply the greatest scorer ever . Almost unmarkable, lightning quick, cool, clinical and deadly. For me to call him a goalhanger is insulting
I was at this match. Great European night. A gang of tangerines fans came wandering round the Stretty before the gates were opened, chanting "Dindee yeneetet, Dindee yeneetet, we'll sapporrrrt ye everrrrrmorrre", and the Reds fans were line "there's only one United!!" back at them, but it was all good banter. Not all of '80s football culture was a hooliganistic death trap.
I love the way Greaves is so dismissive of Dundee Utd even though they were cheated out of a European cup final place by Roma only eight months earlier.
I was at the 2nd leg at Tannadice and the Man u fan were troublemaking bastards trying to pick fights with Dundee utd fans.Shouting, swearing and kicking innocent fans near young kids.No handshakes
Hamish should've challenged Greaves to a game of golf. He used to play at Camperdown when I did (for all I know he still does). He was quite good at it...
@@zenonbiesek3699 That's a very good question. Why did Rough get all the caps? There definitely WERE other 'keepers, Hamish certainly among them, that were better than Rough. But Rough get getting picked. Can't understand that at all.
@@andrewguthrie2 Jimmy handled those comments well,he had no issue with Hamish!!!...He could dish it out&take it on the chin..That s what made him really good to listen to!..
A great many top teams of today would get hammered by the 1980s United team...just ask fans of Barcelona, Borussia Moenchengladbach, AS Monaco, Werder Bremen, PSV Eindhoven etc. Dundee United have an unbeaten record (on agg) versus teams from France, Germany and Spain
It's not exactly saying much - money talks these days and has for a long time so it favours the biggest clubs. When it was more of a level playing field in the 80's, Dundee United did pretty well in Europe for a provincial club
Ahh the good old days, Utd all over them and the Manchester side with that bloody welsh twit up front throwing himself all over the shop got away wi murder esp up here. Doon in Nigel land I don't think he got a kick of the ball, was he playing, I'm not sure? Anyway Utd shoulda buried them at Old Trafford. Shocking for us to be held by Manchester, almost as shocking as being ripped off from taking on Liverpool to win the European Cup the year before when the bribed ref ensured Roma got the 3 goals necessary to knock us oot.
Dundee Utd in the 80s were a really good side, but it was a bit like Leeds under Don Revie. They won things but a mixture of bad luck and dodgy refereeing cost them a lot of trophies. And yes, I remember the Roma game, the Italians bought the referee for the second leg.
Now on sky sports we have dinosaurs like Pinocchio Thompson and punch drunk Merse. Who all have their own little agendas. Thompson celebrating a goal like that on TV against another English team (City) was out of order and totally unprofessional. Fair enough against a European team but not another English club? The football media is so Scouse laden it's got to the point of sickly and cringeworthy.
My goodness how we miss this type of typical fans humour( P### taking) and the great man JG did a better job than Harry houdini getting himself out of that tight corner!! So funny...
don't talk crap, Dundee utd would beat man utd, there's only one United and that's Dundee, man u couldn't beat Celtic today, have never beaten them at Parkhead in the Champions league so i think United would win.
Greaves was a fantastic striker...and afterwards he was a fantastic TV pundit. A natural in both jobs. RIP Jimmy
Loved the guy … apart from the obvious. 🙃🏴🇺🇦
Those were great days..never to be repeated..
Used to love saint and greavsie
I am Scottish through and through. However my boyhood hero was Jimmy Greaves. One of the finest strikers to wear a pair of football boots.
the legendary hamish mcalpine
Paul Sturrock was such a good player
RIP Jimmy

Too right mate. Could dance across the surface of Venus and pass it into the corner.
No people dont. Plenty of people apperciate the quality of Greaves. One of the best ever.
Im Scottish and I love Greavsie.

It was a great football show in the 80's
That was a great night. And Stewart Beedie's pass to Luggy one of the best I've ever seen
what a player luggie was, brilliant

When i feel a bit low and needcheering g up i watch this

Great match! And as for Greavsie... a good guy with a great sense of humour :)
Hamish! The King of keepers! Such a talent......
two gentlemen

scots always bottle it, always.
@@meisterlymanu5214 Yes also "bottle it"..whisky, beer, lager..anything you can put down the throat🤷♂️🤦♂️🍺🍻🍸🍷🍾😉
It's just banter man which was a big thing back then before everybody got so sensitive😂🤣
Jimmy just had fun and banter with them
Classic Saint and Greavsie.
That's absolute class!! 🤣
Great comment from Big Jim at 3.26
"Hamish, swing on the bar! Hamish, Hamish, swing on the bar!" - Starks Park - mid 80's'ish.
Fuck me, how good were that Arabs team. Had a mate fae Dundee that was there that night.
You kill me Greavsie ho ho ho...
I was at the 2nd leg at Tannadice and the Man u fan were troublemaking bastards trying to pick fights with Dundee utd fans.Shouting, swearing and kicking innocent fans near young kids.No handshakes
Because of Jim Leighton, who whilst at Aberdeen during the '80s was superb.
Hamish should've challenged Greaves to a game of golf. He used to play at Camperdown when I did (for all I know he still does). He was quite good at it...
Great tv, it was a must watch programme every Saturday. The dodgy barnets made me smile, and even Saint (RIP) looks like he’s wearing a syrup.
If he was he should have got a refund.
Why was he never selected for Scotland ?
Who? Greavsie?😉

Thankfully Jimmy"s Guinness days were well behind him then.
Yes, I thought that was a bit unnecessary, but maybe Hamish didn't know. If he did, shame on him.

Jesper Olsen, won the TOP goalscorer award at Mexico 86 world cup, Danish destroyer
@cohenhaywood10 sorry stand corrected
Greaves comments were tongue in cheek, however that was when Scottish teams had good players. Imagine Dufc v's Mufc today? We'd get obliterated.
Give us the same ratio of money to them we had in the 80s. We wouldn't.
Great to hear them discussing famously poor scottish goalkeepers. England's worst position for about 20 years now. Suck it up.
Jimmy Greaves and John Lennon had changing faces.
When jimmy starts talking about scottish goalkeepers🤣🤣🤣
Greatest comment on this show? Gdeevzie: "I dunno Saint, the ball sounds a bit hollow me?"
Not a hope in hell Kendo. DUFC of today would get hammered by any of the DUFC sides from the eighties.

Stain & Greasy. Loved this show as a kid.
No var in them days
7 penalties so far for Manchester utd this season some things never change Ehhh
A wonder what the score would be if man utd played Dundee United nowadays

3-0 to Dundee Utd
typical pre-rehearsed ITV tripe
50,000 at Old Trafford full house, half as much again this days.
Yep, that's the tourists.

Gordon Strachan...DEE!
Ach the banter: Joe Hart! ;-)
How did we go from this to watching Lineker and that doppy bint (scott) or something 🤔 on motd..christ you can keep modern football.🙄😒
Crikey McApline looks about 4' 6''!
Don't gee us grief greaves..he never liked the Scot's.
And the scots hate all us english
saint spouting like DU had got through. They went out 5-4. Premature hype.

The VHS footage is tragic. I can't believe it never used to bother me. We're spoilt these days 😆 🤣
