      I'm very impressed, given his age and his "retirement" from TV punditry. To be honest, I mainly know him from the unfair Apres Match skits.

    Despite all Jimmy's heroics on the pitch, his greatest achievement was staying sober since 1978. A wonderful example for the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. RIP Jim.

      He was nervous about going to West Ham because of their drinking culture. Should have gone to Derby coz Clough wanted him. Imagine how many more goals he would have got for them. RIP.

    I had the privilege of spending a day with him many years ago. When he signed for Spurs his wages were £12.50 a week and £25 a goal. As for the 66 world cup he told me the reason he did not playmany games was Ramsey hated him. He will always be in my greatest players I ha e ever seen.

    Great description by Johnny Giles but he was wrong re; 66 WC, Jimmy got injured against France that required stitches in his shin and never got his place back when he recovered as Hurst came in and the rest as they say is history. 41 goals as a teenager for Chelsea who ended up mid table speaks volumes. In a world where the word 'Legend' is bandied about all too freely, it is certainly appropriate where Jimmy Greaves is concerned.

    • @MrPhantom1961

      Absolutely correct. You beat me to it - an injury not a drop off in form.

    • @randyborstol2491
      @randyborstol2491 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was form ultimately. He was fit for the final but wasn't picked.
      He had 3 indifferent games in the group stage.
      If he was firing he would have got back in for the final.

    Jimmy Greaves, the best striker and finisher in the 60s, a time when defenders could hack you down. The pitches were a lottery. Legend.

    I went to an Arsenal away game at Villa in the early 60's and after the match the Arsenal fans were at New Street Station. Back then the Arsenal team would often be travelling back to London on the same train; the fans were on the platform waiting for the train back and some of us had a chat with the then manager George Swindin. One chap asked Swindin about the possibility of signing Greaves for Arsenal, "He's a troublemaker", Swindin replied.
    Yeah, think about it, Jimmy Greaves was a trouble maker, a troublemaker for countless defences during his star studded career. Not long after Swindin was sacked and Jimmy Greaves went on plundering goals for fun, but I always regretted he never wore the red and white of Arsenal because he was regarded as 'a troublemaker.'

    Just to contradict John Giles on one thing. Greaves made brilliant investments with his family when he was a player and I'm nearly certain that he was the rare example of a football millionaire before he retired

      I think the way Bill Nicholson got rid of him was a knife in the back .
      Jimmy loved playing for Spurs that's why he stayed there .He was much more loyal to them than they were to him.
      He was never the same
      after that.
