Never got too big into shinies like you have. But the odd few i got over the years were a little treat. Tho never found one that i would want to put on my main team.
Gotta say, I completly get you. As a non native speaker of english, and that only played GSC on 10x speed on an emulator, I'm pretty sure I didn't even noticed that the Gyarados was red, plus I only played GSC once or twice, the PCs were just awful, I used to play gen 3, which means no garantee shiny to teach you about it. When I comes to the anime, I don't remember watching the episode ash caught his Noctowl, I watched the anime, I watched the Johto season, I just think I didn't watch that episode, and since Noctowl wasen't exactly a popular pokemon, I only knew ash's Noctowl, so, to me, all Noctowl looked like that. I only realised Ash's Noctowl was shiny YEARS later, like gen 4 later. I only discovered shinies after I started playing Pokémon Crater, a browser game, which had shinies, and when I was talking about it with one of my friends they said, oh yeah, i like to look for shinies on pokémon Crystal, and I was like "what? There are shinies on the games too?", after that shiny hunting became my favourite activity on pokémon games, right now, I'm hunting for a shiny Orthworm.
Yeah exactly. These comments show me that even native english speakers had a difficult time understanding what they were trying to convey. The english is fine but they wouldn't come right out and say it. Apparently there is a random NPC in GSC that will mention "I ran into a pokemon and it had a different color!!!" Okay? But that only makes sense if you already knew what shinies were lol. He could just be saying he ran into a pokemon he hadnt seen before. This was the first sequel game so it could have been construed that he was a traveller and saw a pokemon he hadnt seen before. Shiny orthworm looks badass thats a good hunt. Great storytelling! I can relate to the shiny mishap. I believe the first full odds shiny I found was a Girafarig in Emerald around 2006, but I didn’t notice until after I hit run 😭 (Playing on the original GBA with the sound off in the car) Definitely will reclaim it, hopefully this year. Wishing you the best with future Pokémon adventures! Hoping you catch any shinies you find ✨

I think the first shiny I found was a Gloom and I knocked it out trying to whittle down its health. Second I found and actually caught was a Noctowl like Ash. Made me an usually proud nerd to have that one. I didn't connect the dots on the red Gyrados, either. I just thought it was an amusing side story and nothing more.
@DeetotheDubs my YT is therapy at this point because this was low key a beacon to anyone else who didn't pick up on the gyrados thing lol. And for anyone else who has failed a shiny haha. The noctowl is on me. But the gyrados thing always felt like a side story and they even explained why it was red. But if everything else can be shiny what excuse would they have????

I really want a shiny now no matter how unlikely it is haha Maybe a video idea, beginners guide for adults that missed out on the games who can afford to go back and play them. I have a GBA SP so maybe a game recommendation for that? I think i was overwhelmed by the different colour games didn't know which to play and what the differences were.
....Jesse listen to me. Shiny hunting at 1/8192 odds is VERY excruciating. The the work itself is easy. You literally just encounter pokemon until you find one. But its the TIME....... It takes a long time. Is it worth it? yes, to me. You'll love that shiny forever because you earned it. I like that idea for a video. Give me some time to mull over how I would want to do it. If you have a GBA SP the only hurdle is that basically all pokemon games not on the switch will be a tad expensive, even used. If you've never played a pokemon game I would highly recommend Leaf Green (Its cheaper than fire red usually). Leaf Green is a remake of the original pokemon games and I think its a perfect introduction. To shiny hunt in that game its pretty easy. Those odds I told you about 1/8192 are always active from the moment you start running into pokemon. If you're extremely lucky you can literally encounter one within a few hours (Very unlikely). Then there is "soft resetting" in front of legendary or stationary pokemon. You save in front of a legendary pokemon, click on it to start the encounter, and if its not shiny you reset your game using the button combination for the SP (not the actual power button). You do this until you encounter a shiny. Just make sure you either have a master ball or pokemon that can safely lower shiny down in health and plenty of pokeballs to throw because if you fail the shiny is gone. You can still reset and try again even if you fail but you arent given any special odds. If those odds are too insane for you, in later games they literally half the odds and even start making other methods that make the odds lower and lower. In the current gen you can get down into 1/512 lol. You can get a few shinies in a day now but they wont feel as rewarding.

Actually I do have a switch, I remember now, got I for my wife who sometimes plays animal crossing on it. But I kinda want that authentic experience I would have got back in the mid 2000s. I could play an emulator on my phone, but there is always something lost with them.
I’d recommend getting a Japanese FireRed or LeafGreen. They are much better prices than the English ones, and if you’re even decently familiar with the games, they’re easy enough to play in another language. Luckily the items have pictures (which isn’t the case in Ruby/Sapphire) A good starting hunt in FR/LG would be a Game Corner Pokémon like Abra or a random encounter hunt (excluding the Safari Zone) Also I’ll brainstorm ideas for a video like the one you mentioned. It’s a great idea Hopefully that helps!

And I remember looking around in that patch for HOURS trying to find another one. So THAT convinced me it was a glitch or something for the longest time. Until of course I formally learned what shinies were & this story came back to punch me in the gut. So in a way, my story is like... the inverse of yours. 😅
Shiny gastly looks amazing in gen 2 but you can hardly tell now in newer games. It was unfortuantely one of those shinies that looked less impressive when they re-adjusted shinies. And im really sorry to hear that. Hopefully this video is like an AA meeting where we can come together over failed shinies lol.
