Define average. Those shiny new fully option trucks that are seemingly everywhere cost $60k and more. If you extend the contract out far enough (64-84 months) the "average income" worker can afford one
@@grunt98444 Trucks are useful and a work tool that makes you money. Tesla is a glorified car for shopping trips and waiting for it to charge up. Average income her in Norway where i live is around 50k dollar a year so you be the judge of what is average where you live.
@@redbaron6805 #1 - Calm down #2 - You criticized ZesPak for "lacking writing skills" when in fact his comment made perfect sense. #3 - If a Tesla still works after 10 years of use is a question we literally can't answer yet. #4 - The cheapest Tesla I'm able to configure on the website costs 90k. That's the very basics without winter tires. It's not 100k but it's also not too great of a deal.
I like how a person can look you in the eye after having 4 engine replacements and say how reliable their car is. That's worse than Apple level denial.
@@redbaron6805 , a drive unit costs the same as buying an engine. For the consumer, it doesn't matter how easy it is to replace. They only care about how much it costs. The equivalent costs of changing 3 engines is super high and isn't acceptable.
@@redbaron6805 100.000 miles or 8yrs... not unlimited. And to regular ppl who wants to buy a Tesla they have to wait for a 8 yr old used one. And why u bitchin about warranty? This whole video was about what it will cost to repair the Teslas that will soon be OUT OF WARRENTY! friggin fanboy!
@@redbaron6805 quit trolling you jerk! Did you even read or listen to the title? Regardless of cost of 3 or four drive units even under warranty is not acceptable! If you like them fine so do I but trolling and denial has got to stop jerk! One thing is certain with expensive cars and especially after warranty. A hefty repair bill!
I remember when i finally had enough money to get a 7 series BMW. I had it for 1 year and had nothing but issues with it.. I bought a 6 cylinder Camry and love it... yea i know its Super Vanilla BUT it starts everyday has great pickup and its resale value is amazing.
lol let me guess it was the E65 7 series? And yes you’re right, a Camry is a relief after owning a 7 series. I know many ex 7 owners who are driving Accords now lol
I owned a couple of 7 series in my life...I have to agree with you, they are very expensive to fix. I switched to Mercedes and although the repairs are also expensive, I moved down to an E- Class and it has been very reliable. The thing is once you drive a German car it's hard to drive anything else. Camry's are nice but they feel like you are driving a toaster when comparing to a 7 series.
Good move. Volvo, Toyota, Honda's don't die. Family has had 6 of those brands and all went to 200,000 plus without any significant issues. And 4 of those were 40,000+ miles a year cars with infrequent oil changes.
I have a 2000 sienna with 206k now being used as a cargo van ... super reliable and bought for only $1000...and a 2003 Lexus LS430 now with 180k bought for $2500. Great cars with awesome reliability. Good luck!
Red Baron lol hahaha u better sell that pos because its not gonna last another 100k miles while my honda is going on 300k miles i never even change the oil it just leaks out and i replace it as needed😮😃
Red Baron every auto trans should be oil changed every 30k miles its very easy to do by yourself. I replace 100 dollar battery every 8 years. Your tesla batter will be 8k every 8 years. So u will be buying a new car every 8 years and ill be saving for retirement
Who cares for repairs? Total cost of ownership incliudes fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs, buying cost, profit lost etc....however, today a reliable petrol engine car is still cheaper than any electric, that much is true. But it may change, fanboys pay the price of the experimenting.
This is a great channel. It's somewhat difficult to find honest information on TH-cam regarding what it's really like to own a Tesla long-term, especially out of warranty. I'm a big fan of Tesla, and I'm sure these issues will improve as the company continues to mature and scale. That being said, it's great to see more realistic perspectives and well-researched analyses like yours to balance out all the unrealistically positive videos out there. Keep up the great work!
Tom Catullo why are you sure things will improve? Is that statement an assumption or is it based on some information you have regarding the company? Or corporations in general? We all know how products are “improving”. Or maybe they are not
Red Baron I just cant see how the company will get around the whole proprietary parts thing and the fact that nobody will work on your car outside the dealer. The whole issue is when you are out of warranty, not within warranty. I see a nightmare coming for those owners. Parts costs will be very high and difficult to get and labor when you can get it will be very high too
Rich, THANK YOU! This is hands down the most valuable video I've ever seen on a Tesla Model S. As these cars live past their warranties, their reputation will rapidly begin to reflect the real world costs of ownership- and those will not be cheap. People will be very upset and that will not go unnoticed. You've just convinced me to never own a Tesla until they are forced (by the right to repair movement if nothing else) to open their parts bays and proprietary service information to the public. Every other major carmaker does it, they are not that special.
Agreed.. the way they have tried to "disrupt" the dealership model is laughable as well. Say what you will about dealerships but they serve a purpose to car companies. As the late great Sergio Marchionne said, it's a capital intensive business, from R & D, to manufacture costs, to marketing, so you want to recoup as soon as possible. As soon as they come off the line you want your money back. A Car & Driver piece put it best, because everything you make won't be a winner, a dealership is a captive customer in times of need.. you want the new Corvette that's flying off the lot?, you'll have to take some of these Azteks off our hands. But when your confidence is off the charts and you're starting a car company from scratch you never factor that you'll have these kinds of issues, but they happen to the best of them. There is about five different businesses operating under any dealership.. why would a manufacturer want any part of it?
I feel as if buying a mercedes or a bmw would be a better investment at this point in the video and im not even half way done with it smh. Disapointed in tesla I even boast about em, slowly I loose interest in them.
You make a very good point. A friend of mine is blind in one eye when a metal shrapnel struck him in the eye while hammering. Wearing a safety glass would have prevented shrapnel hitting his eye.
Thanks Rich for convincing me not to buy a Tesla. Too damn expensive to maintain for a person who likes keeping their vehicles a long time. No way. keep up the good work
I am so glad this video didn’t sway me from buying my out of warranty Model S nearly 2 years ago. 50k miles later and it’s needed one 12V battery ($250) and one set of new tires. This video depicts a completely overblown worst case scenario.
Is your Tesla still running? Have you had any issues yet? I'm curious because I notice that most posters on this thread have never owned a Tesla. I'd like to hear straight from someone who has.
@@strangerdanger8462 yes it’s still running great. One more 12V battery replacement. Now at 130k miles total and 80k since I bought it. The only service it’s had since my last comment was the 12v replacement which was done by mobile service at my house.
gasdorfy munchy The actual damaged part is dirt cheap (1 dollar to maybe 50 dollars) and you can do it your self (I think car guru has such a video) but Tesla just replaces the whole assembly.
Car Guru has a video explaining the complexity of the handle system. Why have them? A) they've sold a lot of cars B) it puts a smile on my face every time I walk up the car and it 'greets' me by extending a hand. Just never gets old.
They have these fancy touch sensitive and motordriven doorhandles that move out so you can grab onto it. Probably why. Also Tesla overcharges on parts obviously, because they can.
You should watch be weld with no shirt or gloves....not a big job mind you, but a quick zip here and there. Usually do wear glasses with the grinder....or squint really tight. 100% always have ear protection.
I get that, they act like they are selling iPhones. It might be a little the owners fault too, when some of them change their Tesla every 2 years. Model 3 should be a game changer.
I have to say, after having the reality of the situation explained as clearly as you did, then why on Earth would I purchase ANY Tesla? I smell a lack of integrity here on Tesla's part. Elon's cult hero status is not enough to allow myself to get suckered by a company with this lack of integrity. Behaving like a monopoly does not win hearts either. Driving electric vehicles has always been touted as a simpler mode of travel- with vehicles having a lot less moving parts. But in reality, we are driving a computer, and know a whole lot less as a consumer than having driven internal combustion vehicles for decades. Competition provides choices. No competition equals a monopoly. This is an expensive playing field. I just want to turn the key and drive in relative comfort with minimal annoyance and expense. I think that I will stay with ICUs for now.
Thanks for the info. Very helpful. Electric vehicles (not just Teslas) are cool as hell, but they are disposable vehicles. They only have value while they have warranty. Then repairs are worth more than the car. Not exactly saving the planet once those boxes full of batteries and electronics start hitting the salvage yard.
I am so glad that I didn't buy a Tesla in 1012 when I was looking at new cars. I bought a volt, and considering that everyone I know that did buy a tesla has had many problems, and i have had none, I believe I made the correct choice.
Considering that Tesla had never built their own car until 2012, some technical glitches and hardware problems are bound to happen. It should be noted Tesla went far above and beyond to make those cars whole again when an issue arose, in fact 80% of owners have said they would buy another one
If you watch the door handle episode, it's obvious Tesla got a bunch of electrical engineers to build a computer with transportation functionality as opposed to auto engineers building an electronic transport. So a good choice on the volt. But Tesla policy leaves a lot of room for aftermarket to pick up the slack on cars about to be out of warranty. A good chance for more innovation and improvement.
You did and now the poor volt is dead because of telsa fanboys it should have selled like hot cakes especially the 17 and 18 model wish gm would put the tech in trucks and suvs
station240 Tesla will be forced to do so soon. Right now they sell expensive cars to rich people and can afford to do this in order to increase profits.
That's likely to be the case with the Model 3. Consider the door handles-- M3 door handles are simple cheap mechanical things. M3 was designed to be affordable, MS and MS were not.
izybit izybit My, friend, all-electric cars like the Model S and X are expensive to build. And that is primarily because of the high cost of components. And, the cost of batteries (especially when Tesla first started manufacturing the Model S) also plays a significant role in the pricing of the Model S and X. But, more and more Tesla is gaining experience with batteries. And that will help reduce costs. Since all-electric technology is still in its development stage and, therefore, rare/uncommon in the automotive industry, components/parts aren't as easily and readily accessible as those of conventional, ICE transportation. And, so, it's not like Tesla is willfully pricing its vehicles high. The Model 3 serves as proof that Tesla really want its all-electric car technology to be affordable and available to the masses. But, the truth is, the Model S and X are much more expensive to build that the Model 3.
Lol, likewise. I have a friend who is full blown "tesla is the future"...after watching this, and confirming my lingering doubts they certainly aren't MY future.
I wasn't really keen on getting one before seeing this video, since here in Finland the range is just not enough for someone who drives long distances. They are fine for shorter trips, but with charging points being few and far between you'd have to have 2 cars all times. Plus all the repair bills will most likely be even bigger here, since they have to order the parts and labor is more costly.
I gotta make sure I take care of my 2 Diesel cars. 2013 Jetta and a 2017 Cruze. The Cruze already has 54K miles on it and no issues whatsoever. And usually diesels last forever. Both are driven on the highway 90% of the time, so I don't worry too much.
I have a 2004 Mitsubishi 2.8 turbo diesel work ute it has 480,000 kilometres on it and the only thing I have replaced is the clutch which cost $900 (Australian dollars) parts and labour. Not getting rid of that old girl.
$175 per hour to work on a car??? For that kind of money I want Elon Musk himself work on my car and ask me for diner afterwards... I'm gonna work at a Tesla service station and become rich in a few years.
That really is the sad part. Best buy charges customers for in home service to the tune of 50-200 dollars an hour, the employees themselves are capped at 21 dollars an hour. Service charges for labor is usually just a bloated "margin" charge. The employees just have an hourly wage they're paid whether they're working for a job or sitting at a meeting, or doing paperwork, the company charges an arbitrary amount. Hell if you've used services like Uber(eats), Lyft, Postmates, or Door Dash and also worked for them you'd see how drastic of cut the company takes for doing pretty much nothing, in these cases all they provide is an app and a directory to connect customers to workers, and in some cases take an easy 50% cut of the revenue.
Shriff- How are the executives supposed to pay for their 5000 sq. ft. custom made ranch in Montana though? Poor babies are entitled to it. They'll suffer if they can't charge an arm and a leg for service.
I love what Rich is doing but my issue with this video is that there are things that Rich knows about some of this that he isn't saying and that's a shame. Let's start with the most obvious.. the door handles. The main issue with the door handle is that it's not the easiest thing to get to and requires a body shop or body shop knowledge and tools to remove the door panel to access it. After that, the point of failure isn't actually the door handle but instead a small wiring harness attached to a set of microswitches that costs about $15. So while this is annoying, it's not going to be all that big of a deal moving forward. As more people start to do these repairs, the cost of having it done will come down. One other thing about the door handles. The fix is to secure the wire so that it moves with the door handle. Once this is done properly... that basically ends this issue. The early drive units were replaced when they "made noise" often because Tesla wanted to crack them open to see what was wearing improperly so that those parts could be redesigned. This is a tough process for a company to go through because the first units that are replaced are replaced with pretty much the same unit that just failed. What this means is that those vehicles are going to have to go through another failure before they get the upgraded part. And that seems to be what we are seeing. I have a late 2015 Tesla S90D. 100,000 miles on it now and no noises to speak of and battery degradation seems to be on track. I would be very interested to see the maintenance of later model Tesla's to see how they track mile for mile on these major repairs as opposed to how some of the early models did. Batteries are similar to the above. I'm not sure how many have been pulled more because Tesla wanted to have a look inside them than that they had actually "failed". Perhaps you could let us know some more details, if available, on why these batteries were brought in. Was it for degridation or because of component failures... or was it split down the middle. Again, great video Rich.
You raise some really good points here. I'm debating getting a model three and post warranty costs are a big concern. I tend to keep my cars and I would want to be spending more on a car so that it costs me less in the long term. I don't necessarily expect the same TCO as a $20k Kia, but I don't want to face thousands in repairs in the first ten years. I also am interested in how much better the later model cars are doing. If they've learned from their mistakes then I can see how their business model makes sense.
I think you are the perfect example why Rich said get a 2015+ Model S if you can as most of the kinks are ironed out. Thanks for letting us know even more.
It's American product.. Besides China product, it looks good outside and sucks like Chinese products in quality.. It's only about exploit customers.. Like iPhone is
Pantelis Christidis Lol are you dumb? He just commented on the "truth" other people reported. If you visit Reddit, TMC or any other Tesla community these costs are nothing new, people have been reporting them for years. Hell, some have even live streamed them.
Yeah, but look at the Tesla Channels on TH-cam. They're mostly a bunch of sycophants that don't know shit about cars. In the YT universe, Rich stands alone.
IncognitoTorpedo Nope, you are talking about lifestyle channels that happen to own a Tesla (but even those people report on issues). Hardcore Tesla TH-camrs had always been reporting their problems but maybe you don't follow those.
izybit izybit You seem a little hurt that the actual truth is out there.Tell us which other TH-camr put out this kind of truth?...Name them & we’ll go see,you keep on saying it’s been out there, maybe a small amount of ppl like you (who seem to be in a special group or chat room) know about the problems but this man right here made the video & all his followers & then some know what’s really up with this company & you seem upset about it.GTFOH...Thanks CarGuru for informing the public about this car when it is out of warranty.
Previous to this video, I was clueless on problems that plagued these cars. I'm glad I am subscribed. Haven't heard anything from many TH-cam's who outline the issues car guru has
1.5 years and she breaks 3 door handles, a computer screen and a drive unit. Even though they have less moving parts......That's an achievement. I broke like one engine in 20 years but only because i over revved it....i am on my 5th car and 2nd motorcycle....that's a lot of moving parts to break. I never broke a door handle EVER...my locks always worked....actually nothing major happened and it never cost me much to replace anything except the engine which was my fault. The only way to cure Tesla fanboyism is by moneyletting. Let them savor the moments until the first bills arrive. Teslas are maintenance free because Tesla won't service them out of warranty.
@@don_fren They have been in business for over one and a half decade now. The Model S has been in production half of that time. They have a monopoly on spare parts and maintenance....they won't touch your car if it's out of warranty. You are on your own. How fucked is that? So yeah NO they won't go down.
Damn, I feel so bad for people who got unlucky with these cars. Bought one four years ago and put 100k miles on it, all out of warranty. Aside from the annual servicing, didn’t need any repairs.
I really wanted a tesla, but damn.... repair cost is crazy! Going to end up like bmw again.... paying more for maintenance than a new car in a few years time.
too many overly complicated toys....doors, electric door handles,, which are not well made and causing failures, put TESTED tech on them, normal locks and doors, do models without fancy seats, without the self driving tech, get parts fully tested and use that car as your base model and make money with it
The insane part is that a used Tesla can have 89,000 miles and sells for $35K! WTF! I would bet that every used Tesla has been abused by launching it! I think I'll be buying me a Lexus SUV.
Man you have got to put the shoe of the saw against the thing you are cutting. It is a reciprocating saw. The blade moves forward and back. If the shoe isn't against something to hold the saw still then YOU are the only thing holding it still. And you can't do it as well as the shoe does. Stop fighting the saw. Just press the shoe against the thing you are cutting and rock the blade up and down.
To be honest, a lot of manufacturers especially the likes of Mercedes are creating unique parts to every car and making them more computerised and difficult for anyone to just go and repair. If the trend follows soon I get back on my bike
U can buy European but must sell before warranty expires or even earlier. have fun for 2 years and sell while there is still warranty for the other Guy For me I bought Merc before 1985 and bring them to top conditions and enjoy the chrisma of period Merc, that is Merc in their golden era of production 1960 nto under 1990 years
Said it before but if Tesla doesn't change the way they do things these cars will be uninsurable and basically worthless a few years after the warrenty runs out.
The market has a way of meeting demand. There are already people out there with businesses that warranty salvage Tesla vehicles, and more of those will pop up if Tesla doesn't do the right thing. At the moment, there is no indication that Tesla won't do the right thing. But at this stage of their development, they can't afford stories like "shade tree mechanic electrocuted working on Tesla" so they've been conservative in their approach.
I would have taken teslas refusal to engage at any level on salvage cars as a huge indication that unless forced by the market (ie the cars being worth drastically less) tesla won't do the right thing. They are not saying we won't supply support and parts unless the mechanic is trained and certified in HV systems they are saying we won't supply support and parts no matter what. Salvage parts can only get you so far. At this stage it isn't an issue for them but it will become one if they don't change tune. Insurance companies wont like paying out total losses on cars with relatively minor issues when the value of the cars gets lower.
I'm not in disagreement. They are just a very small company compared with other car companies at the moment and don't have the resources to devote to training third-parties. Again, I believe (and have no inside knowledge) that they are trying to avoid the "dude kills himself in unsafe Tesla" story. There are third-party body shop certification programs, though, and Tesla also has a program to 're-certify' the car (Car Guru has a video where he talks about this). You pay the money for inspection, you pass, and Tesla starts supporting your car again. At the moment, the number of salvage cars in the total of 300k vehicles sold so far is small, and its clientele well insured, so it hasn't been much of an issue. I agree it will become more so in the future, though, especially with Model 3.
Even needing body shop certification to get tesla support is laughable. They are far from the first aluminium body car, fixing the bodywork is no different to most high end Audis but you can walk in to an Audi dealer and buy parts no questions asked. I don't buy the excuse that they are trying to avoid deaths. HV systems in vehicles are not new.
@ItsFriscoBaby You are missing my point. If you have your car repaired at a certified body shop, you don't need to recertify. What Tesla is trying to avoid is shade tree mechanics doing the minimum to repair a high torque performance sedan with enough amps to power your house for three days, killing themselves or others, and then Tesla being blamed for whatever the issue was. Every Tesla wreck gets clicks, so every one ends up online and in the news. One fire and the stock drops 10%. We've already seen the guys on Copart who take a wrecked Tesla, do the minimum to make it look good in the photos, and then try to flip it for big money to an unsuspecting sucker. CarGuru had a great video about that. By contrast, if a BMW gets in a wreck, no one cares, so it doesn't end up on the news.
There is a shop in Fresno who rebuilds most half shafts. Those axles that were pulled apart in your red roll over might be repairable. I suspect Tesla would use common size rollers/balls and CV boots so that they would be rebuildable. Reason I say that is because another channel took apart a drive unit and read off the part numbers on the bearings.. common off the shelf stuff. I used to be in auto parts retail in an old Mom and Pop store and they had tons of books with sizes of bearings and seals. Most alternators and anything rotating stuff used common bearings.. like the 203 that fit most alternators and drive belt idlers and tensioners. There are also shops that do custom motor rewinds. I have seen burned out Prius windings and suspect that a Tesla unit can be rewound. Off the top of my head..if differential bearings are going out, one might consider a heavier gear oil. Early Mazda and Ranger pickups used ATF in their stick shift transmissions and we put 90w oil in them for longer life in heavy service. Brake pistons and seal kits might share commonality with something U.S. domestic so if you can find a kit that fits, just hone out the caliper bore and you're back in business. Most parts houses have gone full electronic on their catalogs and have no way to look up sizes. I talked with a SMP (Standard Motor Parts) rep and he told me they no longer print paper catalogs. I have had some luck looking up seal dimensions using part numbers and going to the Rock Auto search window. There are hydraulic supply warehouses that have all the sizes in increments on seals..might be helpful, but you would have to be careful as to fluid and temperature specs.
obsolete professor Tesla spare parts are expensive because Tesla replaces the whole thing instead of changing that one part (most door handle, motor and battery issues are like that). This mentality will probably change in a couple of years. As for bearings FAG, SKF, etc have nice websites where you can find dimensions and specs for almost every bearing they have. Always enjoyed checking that stuff out (did it professionally).
Chevy Volts are extremely reliable. Sure, you are surrounded by plastic but they are otherwise over-engineered. Chevy was losing something like $50k per car due to development costs. Last I read Chevy hadn't warrantied a single full battery pack. On TH-cam there are videos of an independent engineering Group that does teardowns of electric cars. They found that Chevy spared no expense on the drivetrain and electronics, all very high end components and extremely well-thought-out. I remember seeing how they put some very expensive converter on the passenger side because crash statistics showed it would be less likely to be destroyed and less expensive for ownership with insurance. The Volt manages that reliability with both and Ice engine and electric Powertrain. So personally I think reliability has nothing to do with electric and just the specific company or car model.
Preston Steele The loss for each car was $9k not 50k. I call bs, I’ve had my 2014 volt for 55k mile and no problems yet and other owners have backed up the reliability claim.
A tech at a local Chevy dealership replaced a front axle/CV on my 2014 Volt. We chatted a bit and he told me to hold on to it because it uses all high-end Japanese electrical components. He also said the 2nd Gen uses cheaper electrical bits sourced from China and has more problems. The original Volt is very over engineered - and it feels like it when closing doors. $10K of quality and a few hundred pounds were taken out to make the 2nd Gen. I WANT a Tesla, but my brain understands that all I NEED is my very reliable all-options 2014 Volt Premium. Bought used in 2016 with 37K miles. Price was $17K, minus $7,500 trade in. The monthly payment is less than the monthly gas money I'm saving - and I'm saving even more because of the 2-year oil change interval due to 72% of miles driven are electric. I've owned the car for 2.5 years and all maintenance has been covered by warranty. Last week I paid for my first oil change - just $29.95. That's been my two year maintenance cost. Brakes have almost no wear due to regenerative breaking. Will need tires soon. A GM factory worker has over 400K nearly trouble-free miles on his 2012 Volt. 1st Gen Volts are keepers. The Volt makes a lot of sense to people who make spreadsheets...unfortunately most of the public doesn't make spreadsheets, and this is why the Volt got axed.
I've always been considering purchasing a Tesla, and you have confirmed, for me, that new is the way to go as long as you get rid of it while still under warranty. Thanks for your research and keep up the good work.
Many thanks for an honest and informative video about Teslas policies. Tesla is now removed from my list of cars to concider. Are you the only honest and knowledgeable Tesla reviewer on TH-cam? I never heard anything like this before about Tesla.
The European Union introduced antitrust rules in the motor vehicle sector in 2010 that has stopped manufacturers from restricting service to a specific dealer that would invalidate a warranty. Thankfully the UK is still in the EU (at the moment) so I wonder what happens here? If an independant garage wanted to service a Tesla then Tesla would have to sell them part (and, I think, give them service information). Do they do this here?
I've been looking for this exact type of video explaining the repair costs on early Model S models. Thank you for this information! I will wait for the Model 3.
Agree. Mazdas are as good as Toyota also, but they're usually quite a bit smaller than the competition. I have kids so I need size. And some have Ford engines and trannys so u just gotta do research before.
@I know you are right, And I just got owned but: My experience is that almost any car can do 200K with engine and trannys. BUT you have to change the engine oil every 4500 with synthetic and the ATF every 30K, which noone ever does. I got my crappy 04 Malibu to go 200K doing all the fluids myself for 15 years. It's all the other stuff that breaks the first 2 years though. Like mirrors, release buttons, and rattling dash.
@I know you are right, And I just got owned but: I love all the trolling trash you post on every site. You have no clue what you're talking about but thanks for spreading more trash.
I've heard that was an older design on the model S, not on the model 3. I was concerned also but I think they're getting more reliable as time goes on and they find more weak links in the chain.
I must have owned between 35 to 40 cars and pickups in my life and don't remember ever having to replace a door handle. And some of them were real shitboxes!! 57 Ford!!!
you are leaving out that Tesla replaced his battery because it lost like 8% or something which doesnt matter to people if they had to replace it themselves
Thank you Rich. These are the answers I have been looking for on true repair costs and ownership. Not getting the service records is a big deal. I was looking at a 2012-13 and think I'll work on getting that 2015+ model now. Appreciate it.
The motors most likely are not that expensive......I wonder if Tesla gives you a new or recycled battery? It only takes a few hours to replace the battery or motor in an S. The 3 seems like it will be far MORE complicated to replace the battery.
They are certainly not a trivial cost and on top of that comes a couple of hours of labor. Do this three times for half the fleet and it will start to add up. The have been *a lot* of drivetrain issues with the Tesla's
How's that? He's telling you what you could potentially have to pay. He's also dispelling the myth that Teslas are cheap to maintain and reliable. He's not making up the numbers.
This confirms a few of my suspicions. I’ll keep my 97 4Runner. At 18mpg it’s still way cheaper to drive because 1) cheap insurance, 2) low purchase price, and 3) I can work on it myself with aftermarket parts! BUT it doesn’t do Tesla things well such as make you feel prestigious or environmentally conscious. It boils down to what you want out of a car. This we know about Teslas: they’re expensive before AND after the warranty.
100% wont buy a tesla till parts show up in normal auto parts stores. I used to own a car that i had imported from japan and parts were only available IN japan. and that was a pain but worth it. But this this is insane.
J Dalzell If you are in the US you can find most of the parts online. Second hand mostly but still. Tesla will probably sell parts to the public in 2019 or 2020, driven by the vast adoption of Model 3 and the many many out of warranty Model S.
izybit izybit Nobody in their right mind would want a USED out of warranty Model S after seeing this.Lol we’re supposed to by second hand parts now? 🤣🤣 man you’re definitely on a special type of drug.
Surprising that Tesla is charging this much for parts/service since Elon himself said all parts/service would be sold at cost and that it's "unethical" to profit off service since cars should be reliable to begin with.
It costs billions to build out a service centers around the planet where none existed before. Just because they charge prevailing rates doesn't mean they are making any net profit
@@grunt98444 wow. U really as re a fan boy... So you think it's ok to charge 175 an hour and it's ok for them not to make profit. Why not give them gold plated tools to work on the cars and raise the rates to 500 an hour. Hey as long as no one is making any money...
@@technom3598 First off mechanics own their own tools for the most part. Secondly there is a difference between gross and net profit, something the FUD spreaders have yet to understand
I believe electric vehicles are the future, but I wish some people will stop saying the Tesla is the best thing since sliced bread. When the cars go out of warranty, is Tesla going to allow third party auto parts places to stock parts or are we going to be stuck a single place who can basically charge what they want since there is no one competing against them? I assume since there is no more warranty, then there could other places that will pop up that you can have the car worked on, but again, will Tesla sell them the parts or you will still be stuck with Tesla. Spending only $4000.00, great. How about the inconvenience of all the other issues even though they were covered by Tesla. If my new car broke down in the first three years, I am covered as well, but I probably would not be keeping the car if I had to keep sending it in for many warranty covered fixes.. Yes it doesn't cost me anything, but time and inconvenience has to be worth something. Tesla is young company and as others get more into the game, then everyone benefits from the competition.
Time and inconvenience for fixes has been minimal. In my case, they come to my home (but would go to your office as well), pick up my car, leave me a loaner, and drop my car back to me when they are done. Once they put my car back in my garage and left because I didn't hear them ring the bell and I was on a conference call. Sure, annoying that something broke, but if the cost to me is $0 to fix it, and they leave me a P100D to have fun with while they are working on my car, what do I really care?
Its great that Tesla tries to do the right thing and give you a loaner and comes to your house to pick up the car. I was wondering, if you had the same exact problems with a Toyota, GM, Honda, BMW, Mercedes, anything but Tesla would you or any other current Tesla owner have been as forgiving. From what I have read, many of these issues may come down to quality control. We went through this in the late 70s and early 80s when GM, Ford, and Chrysler had poor quality control or not as good as the upcoming Toyota, Honda, and Nisan, (Datsan at the time). If you bought another Tesla and had as many quality issues, no matter how minor, would you be as tolerant? Is there a point where you say, I don't care how nice the loaner is, I really want my car to be right so I don't have to keep dealing with unscheduled maintenance no matter how good customer service is. How long does Tesla get the benefit of the doubt before they are treated like every other manufacturer? I believe if and when another company goes full force in to the all electric market, if Tesla doesn't get production issues straighten out, then someone else will take over this market and Tesla will suffer the same pain as the American car companies did when Nisan, Toyota, and Honda began to gain market share in the 80s
Well, other OEMs aren't perfect. My previous car was a Lexus IS and I had the melting dash issue out of warranty and they declined to fix it. Lexus never came to my home to swap my car when I had an issue, either. But sure, people buying Teslas (especially the early adopter owners) are trying to bring about the future we want, and Tesla is certainly getting some goodwill by dragging the rest of the OEMs to electric way before they wanted to.
For you maybe, for me not so much as for anything less than 5 hours Tesla will not loan me a car but that means in effect that i loose my work day. With that in mind i have been in Tesla workshop 5 times in the past 6 months. If i wasnt i warranty i would have paid almost as much in repairs as the car it self is worth today.... Tesla is loosing the game they set up themselves. These cars are way too expensive to have an audience like Apple. They dont cost 1000USD... nothing on them costs 1000USD so you cannot expect that people can just throw them and buy a new. Mr. Musk has gotten the idea all wrong. If he wants to solidify his companies existence he should slow down production and make sure that he can service all people that need a car to drive. MS is not a lamborghini. It is a 7 seater family tech car. It is not even a luxury car. You would know if you ever sat in a proper one. So he cannot say to 300.000 people that bought his car and have a 9-5 job to shit on their paying jobs because he has to fix those cars 12-16 times every year. No auto-industry company has even been this bad. That will be the demise of Tesla. Especially in 2018 that a huge amount of Teslas will start rolling out of warranty.
How can EV's be the future when the current power grid can't keep up with current demand? ESPECIALLY when the tree huggers won't allow new power plants to be built.
question... you said his car was under commerical use so warranty doesnt apply... does that mean if i get a tesla and make youtube videos about it, im also not covered?
I have no doubt that they'll improve as time goes on but having to replace a door handle is nearly unheard of in the cheapeest of any high volume model let alone multiples times in a low volume, high dollar model. These are niche vehicles for the rich and stupid. Hybrids make much more sense for the masses at this point.
Nissan leaf are easy to maintain yourself, everything very basic and simple just like typical Japanese mainstream car. Tesla however are over-engineered, overpriced crap with plastic interior and third grade electric motors from 1950s.
And the Leaf has a driving range not suitable for most commuters or motorists. The Tesla does. If the car is catered to a luxury audience who would rather service the car through a dealership than on their own, so be it. This channel is aimed at showing the real cost of ownership. To me that says a lot. To each their own. Soon enough there will be dozens of brands competing with Tesla for a similar product. When someone else can offer cheaper ownership Tesla will have to step up. Period.
+SMGJohn Nissan is not a Japanese owned car company anymore as RENUALT which is French owns Nissan since 1999. Most Nissan shares RENUALT bodies engines etc. So they are French
Tesla has regen, so your brakes last forever, and you never need to replace the brake pads for $200. Of course, since you don’t use the brakes, the calipers seize, and when you finally do an emergency stop, all 4 rotors get smoked from seized calipers that don’t retract, and $6000 to replace the entire brake system. I’ve bought new cars that cost less than that brake repair. LOL
IMHO I am thinking you need to work the brakes out in your electric car at least once a week. Especially if your car is not garage kept. My rear drum brakes on my 2001 Cherokee just seized up a month ago.. I was pissed they had to put in new drums and shoes........It cost me $260 parts and labor.. ;).
fatboy19831, yes, even a new pair of slave cylinders aren’t that much on cars if you can get the parts at Autozone or similar and do it yourself. If you took it to a dealer and got the rear brakes (cylinders, shoes, drums) replaced, it’s probably over $700.
So, So Happy that I saw this video, plus another! I was planning on buying a 2016 S85 today, Car has 64,000 mi @ $41k Car does not have a single scratch or ding.... excellent appearance, 2 previous owners, from Fla. As young salesman walked between me and the car to open the rear, he opened the Recharge door, caught it on his trousers, ......ripping it completly off the car! Major $$, I would think, so I am waiting for it to be repaired,... BEFORE buying! AFTER watching THIS Video...... there is NO WAY I am buying a "Mechanic Addicted" car, as this Video CLEARY shows!! .........MAJOR faults, and Expenses $$$ ..... Thank you.....thank you...Thank you!!
Ouch . There is no way on planet earth unless you (Tesla ) give a complete bumper to bumper warranty you can take this maintanance nightmare straight to he'll. 1,000 dollars for a door handle.
He's not losing content. Rich is not that dedicated to his channel. He just makes a video when he has something important to say. He's not getting paid to do this.
I don't know. He's made quite a few videos covering a wide range of content about repairs and ownership of a salvage Tesla. Making and editing videos and responding to followers and such is awfully time-consuming. By now with well over 250k subscribers I have a hard time believing he isn't capitalizing on it decently. He may not be quitting his day job anytime soon but with as much exposure he's getting to sell his parts, the places that he gets his parts from and such he must be getting some decent kickbacks. I for one am grateful for all the knowledge he's sharing, but he outright claims that he's been selling used parts for ICE vehicles for a very long time. He's a businessman and doing quite well if his nice cars, nice home, and continual purchases of high dollar salvage Teslas on a regular basis and such are any indication.
Tesla's are like owning a boat, they are money pits and nobody wants to work on them, I will stick with good old internal combustion for my driving needs, maybe one day the electric car will be more cost effective.
I own a bmw i3 rex 2014. Been to the warranty dealer 4 times in 1 year. Total costs for repairs under warranty $6,000. Scares me when it comes out of warranty in sept 2018-1 more month. I may go get a camry again. Had it 10 years and no major problems. I make good money but am too cheap to spend big money repairing a “green car”. My i3 is the funnest car i ever had. There is some value in that. But huge bills on repair- no thanks.
Tesla certified shops and service centers want to work on them. The average local repair shops don't have the training to safely service or repair them nor are they likely too in the near future
My biggest question is why do drive motors fail so often? Aside from the ones that are flooded out do you or tesla provide any failure report to the public? It seems like the motor is the heart of their design and you gotta wonder why they fail so often.
That's correct. We're about to see the resale value plummet because no one will want to buy a used Tesla. That's going to have an effect on leases too since the resale value has to be considered.
There are plenty of modern cars that are easily diy serviceable with affordable replacement parts. They aren't any more complicated than they were 20 years ago. If you can't do your own mechanic work, well, I suppose there is something to be said for your statement.
wainfiggitty Today’s vehicles are made to last 8-10 years before they rot, or become a costly money pit in repairs. When you go back to the carbureted trucks and cars, they have little to no wiring, no computer modules where todays have 4-10 control computers and 100miles of wires to trace for shorts. Old trucks had thick frames and box metal, now it is thin as possible so they rot and you have to buy a new one.
Chuck Beef back in the carbureted days engines were considered used up by 100k. The fuel metering and machine tolerances weren't as precise so when you'd cold start, change elevation, etc there'd be more times of the vehicle running rich and washing the cylinders down contaminating the oil sooner. 300k mile carbed motors were quite rare. Those old trucks had open frame rails, newer trucks have mostly switched to heavier boxed frame rails. Modern truck drivetrains are beefier, tougher transmissions differentials etc. Old 1/2 tons were never rated to tow what today's trucks are capable of. In the 90's I'd see 20yr old trucks and they were quite rusty. Modern corrosion resistance systems do a better job of preventing this (unless you're in the snowbelt, ain't nothing fixes that). Those wires and computers are easy to work with once you know how. I've stripped my 2000 Subaru (with 305k miles) to the bare shell for a custom paint job and motor swap and re-assembled. I've modified my ten yr old Escalade and when I tore down the trans and motor they looked fresh as a new component. Embrace technology lol.
Wow thank you so much! Lots of information in one video! My parents have a Tesla and I-am-in-love and I'm thinking of buying a used Model S. Still pretty young with not a lot of cash, knowing this has really opened my eyes and to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I'm going to either wait or be smart about buying an older Tesla!!
Those screens will always fail because the temps in the car get crazy high during the summer. I have a iPad in the dash of my jeep and I have to slide it out of its housing daily during the summer because the screen starts to separate from the iPad if I don't.
gasdorfic muncher The bad news spread faster and people remember them for longer. Tesla had a lot of issues with the motor assembly of the first cars but those issues have been resolved for the most part. People online are reporting these issues much less frequently these days. Still not perfect but getting there.
ICE engines is 1000 times more complex that electric engines. There is 0 reason for an eletric engine to die except low cost electric engine or not used for the entend purpose. The only quality item in a Tesla is the batteries.
Buy a Hybrid Lexus if you need a luxury car. This is insane, I considered a Tesla for about 5 minutes. Thanks for this information, I think this technology is still too new.
Wtf kind of door handle costs $1000 dollars? Does it open a door into another dimension?
LOL
I recently bought a door handle for my 24 year old GMC yukon $11 on ebay hopefully it will last another 24 years cuz thats expensive lol
You don't go into another dimension until you get the repair bill.
Yeah and how about those 1200 e-brake pads!!!!! Jesus!!!
The switch that raises and lowers my car window on a Mazda Mx6 years ago cost me $300. Some plastic piece inside had broken. Thats just a switch.
The conclusion is that people with an average income have to stay far away from these cars.
Define average. Those shiny new fully option trucks that are seemingly everywhere cost $60k and more. If you extend the contract out far enough (64-84 months) the "average income" worker can afford one
1) That's not 100k
2) They'll run in 10 years without needing 50k worth of repairs meanwhile.
@@redbaron6805 I was replying to grunt98311, he was talking about 60k+ trucks.

That settles it. I'm buying a Toyota.
I guess either way you don't like warranties...
I did actually. 😁
Good luck!

It doesn’t :) simple. I think it costs like 200-300$ with work included max. (not sure 100% of US market). Tbh this video is mainly talking nonsense.
Now I love my honda even more. 120k miles $0.00 on repairs.
Typicalobserver same here i had 99 accord for14 years I just upgraded to 2012 accord the best car not even one problem.

When reality hits. Hellfire will strike upon the tesla fan boys and its market cap. Only wise people can see right through this money pit sham.
Agreed.. the way they have tried to "disrupt" the dealership model is laughable as well.

Safety glasses with the right impact ratings. Better yet a face guard. It's annoying but it only take that one time.
When I saw that I was shocked! It was the overwhelming item I noticed in the entire video
The safety cover is missing on that hand tool too. These cutting disks can brake and peaces will fly in all directions.

I am so glad this video didn’t sway me from buying my out of warranty Model S nearly 2 years ago. 50k miles later and it’s needed one 12V battery ($250) and one set of new tires. This video depicts a completely overblown worst case scenario.

$800 door Handel ...not gold plated?
gasdorfy munchy The actual damaged part is dirt cheap (1 dollar to maybe 50 dollars) and you can do it your self (I think car guru has such a video) but Tesla just replaces the whole assembly.
Car Guru has a video explaining the complexity of the handle system. Why have them? A) they've sold a lot of cars B) it puts a smile on my face every time I walk up the car and it 'greets' me by extending a hand. Just never gets old.
And apparently charges 175usd hr before taxes, probably inflates hours too....
They have these fancy touch sensitive and motordriven doorhandles that move out so you can grab onto it. Probably why. Also Tesla overcharges on parts obviously, because they can.
Most any high end car company service center charge that and more. Go look at MB, BMW or Audi shop rates

Tesla is acting like a Software Company but not as a Car Manufactor. They have much to learn !
Tesla is a Technology company that sells cars.
I get that, they act like they are selling iPhones. It might be a little the owners fault too, when some of them change their Tesla every 2 years. Model 3 should be a game changer.
WTF ? then please tell me how we will travel from point A to point B ?
TrekZero rockets, man.
Sad the government allows these assholes to decide whom they will sell parts to.
2:45 cringe as i watch guy use angle grinder/cutter tool and about lose a finger as its bouncing in his hands
And with the guard removed....WTF

I am so glad that I didn't buy a Tesla in 1012 when I was looking at new cars. I bought a volt, and considering that everyone I know that did buy a tesla has had many problems, and i have had none, I believe I made the correct choice.
Considering that Tesla had never built their own car until 2012, some technical glitches and hardware problems are bound to happen. It should be noted Tesla went far above and beyond to make those cars whole again when an issue arose, in fact 80% of owners have said they would buy another one
I bought a salvaged volt. Never a problem. Quite a well-thought out car. Wish they would offer more variety with the volt drivetrain.

My, friend, all-electric cars like the Model S and X are expensive to build.
Damn dude you just made me NOT want a Tesla WTF...
Jay Dontknowbetter,Reality rears its head.
Lol, likewise. I have a friend who is full blown "tesla is the future"...after watching this, and confirming my lingering doubts they certainly aren't MY future.
Just buy a new Tesla and u'll be fine 😁...lol
He said it at the end those issues are occurring to cars from 2012 the new ones are getting slowly better
Great information. I'll stay with my ultra reliable gasoline engine car.
Very educational. Glad I went with the Leaf Plus.
$175 per hour to work on a car??? For that kind of money I want Elon Musk himself work on my car and ask me for diner afterwards... I'm gonna work at a Tesla service station and become rich in a few years.
UCreations Are you better looking than Amber?
175.. sounds like Audi-prices in germany..
Problem is, you'll only earn $15 anyway ,)
Twelve Wing Productions Most Tesla owners can’t work on their cars the doorhandles are a joke
Sounds like junk to me. I wonder if it's more lucrative to part-out a Tesla than to resell it.
The bad part about Tesla is if ya car needs repairs you have to go to tesla and pay premium price for repairs there are no 3rd party shops

So, basically you need to replace the car every 8 years.
Do you think that's good?...or bad?
Damn, I feel so bad for people who got unlucky with these cars. Bought one four years ago and put 100k miles on it, all out of warranty. Aside from the annual servicing, didn’t need any repairs.
I really wanted a tesla, but damn.... repair cost is crazy! Going to end up like bmw again.... paying more for maintenance than a new car in a few years time.

The insane part is that a used Tesla can have 89,000 miles and sells for $35K! WTF! I would bet that every used Tesla has been abused by launching it! I think I'll be buying me a Lexus SUV.
Okay fair enough but just keep in mind this is the cost for the model S not the modle3.

Excellent commentary. Very insightful for individuals seeking to purchase CPO vehicles
To be honest, a lot of manufacturers especially the likes of Mercedes are creating unique parts to every car and making them more computerised and difficult for anyone to just go and repair. If the trend follows soon I get back on my bike

@ItsFriscoBaby
You are missing my point.
Personally I gotta have a paper book in my hand. Easier to flip straight to the meat.

Thanx for your input.
Jonathan Pruess I got a salvaged volt. No problems. 2 years between oil change.

I've heard that was an older design on the model S, not on the model 3. I was concerned also but I think they're getting more reliable as time goes on and they find more weak links in the chain.

All luxury cars are very pricey to repair. My jaw dropped when I found out some of the repair prices for a Lexus.
Changing the drivetrain and batteries one or more times under warranty is a big part of why Tesla isn't making any money.

Surprising that Tesla is charging this much for parts/service since Elon himself said all parts/service would be sold at cost and that it's "unethical" to profit off service since cars should be reliable to begin with.

I have 2017 Volt, so far only repair needed was the heat module. Which was still under warranty.
Rich, I find your work and videos extremely professional, informative and well done. Keep up the great work.
Excellent video. Love all the information
question... you said his car was under commerical use so warranty doesnt apply... does that mean if i get a tesla and make youtube videos about it, im also not covered?
How long do you sit at a filling station waiting to get recharged? That did it for me.
About an HR ? Don't see why you wouldn't just charge at home though while you sleep 😴
efrain martinez My house does not travel well.
@@mikewhite9818 I'm sorry to hear that.
Would you please inform me where I can purchase these: third-grade electric motors from 1950s.?
Dont buy Teslas *BOIS* give car guru a chance to build another one he’s losing content
lol. oh we have plenty of content :)
@@alexedwards8059 I hope he is doing well in life. He is good in his crafts.
I'm waiting until Toyota makes an one before I jump on the EV bandwagon.
Not me. Way too many recalls with Toyota.
@@Jeremiah17seven still the best car brand out there besides honda
@@Jeremiah17seven All car manufacturers have recalls.
@@grunt98444 why would they let anyone else make money.
Your a natural youtuber, very pleasant to watch!!
My biggest question is why do drive motors fail so often? Aside from the ones that are flooded out do you or tesla provide any failure report to the public? It seems like the motor is the heart of their design and you gotta wonder why they fail so often.
I’m starting a Tesla junkyard.. 😂😂
Best deal is not to buy one over 8 years old.
That's correct. We're about to see the resale value plummet because no one will want to buy a used Tesla. That's going to have an effect on leases too since the resale value has to be considered.
Dont buy any modern car over 8 years.
Ok, fanboys, get ready to take the Elon Musk poster down and light it on fire 🔥
Wow thank you so much! Lots of information in one video! My parents have a Tesla and I-am-in-love and I'm thinking of buying a used Model S. Still pretty young with not a lot of cash, knowing this has really opened my eyes and to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I'm going to either wait or be smart about buying an older Tesla!!
Stay away kid.. start small
Those screens will always fail because the temps in the car get crazy high during the summer. I have a iPad in the dash of my jeep and I have to slide it out of its housing daily during the summer because the screen starts to separate from the iPad if I don't.

3 motors is alot breakage ...that doesnt happen on ice car ? 3 times in roll
gasdorfic muncher The bad news spread faster and people remember them for longer. Tesla had a lot of issues with the motor assembly of the first cars but those issues have been resolved for the most part.
People online are reporting these issues much less frequently these days.
Still not perfect but getting there.
el. motor and ice motor are not the same. When ice motor dies, car is ready to be toasted.
actually there are few ICE engines that cost more than the 6000$ Tesla wants for their replacement.
ICE engines is 1000 times more complex that electric engines. There is 0 reason for an eletric engine to die except low cost electric engine or not used for the entend purpose. The only quality item in a Tesla is the batteries.
I’ll take the battery and build my very own amazing money pit!
Buy a Hybrid Lexus if you need a luxury car. This is insane, I considered a Tesla for about 5 minutes. Thanks for this information, I think this technology is still too new.
