My God. I love Tesla's. But I think I'll stick with my 15 year old Honda Accord V6 coupe. Which doesn't even have a quarter of the issues that these cars have and their only a few years old. Absolutely crazy and mind-boggling. I love how transparent you are Rich. That's why I'm subscribed. In fact...in 15 years my Honda hasn't had any major issues at all. Aside from regular maintenance. But I do understand Tesla is a new company and they're still learning. I still very much like the cars. And I hope to own one one day.
Don't forget that if you scroll through the photos of the cars on the Tesla site, most listings will have actual images of the car for sale after you get through the rendered images. They typically highlight any dents or dings. The extended warranty that they offer with refurbished cars also gives a lot of peace of mind.
Rich should make that H1 - Humvee full electric by pulling out the old diesel engine and add 2 Tesla motors on each axle, adding 2 big batteries on rear and re-using the front compartment where the diesel engine was as a frunk-trunk.. Go to buy a used car and find that there are miss aligned panel gaps is always a big alarm bell of replacement or accident. On a Tesla it's a 'factory fitted feature'.
Is it just me, or is this alarming for these cars all being under 5-10 years old? All cars have problems but a lot of these issues point to poor quality.
Tesla fanboys (meaning people who can afford a new car every three years) do not know anything about used cars, so for them this is not an issue (they also think that hence it's not an issue for any other person).
Your right, here is a model S performance in the UK, checked the vin for outstanding bulletins and it’s needing the exploding dash airbag replaced before it kills someone!! OUTSTANDING from UK Tesla dealer.
Just replaced a door handle gear and the AGM battery. Really hoping I don't get all of these other problems. You're frightening me rich. Working on my Tesla has been a pain in the ass.
@@felkmane why would you use another lithium battery to run what a cheaper battery can, that won't require additional engineering for all those common components? The Tesla battery is not 12v, so all those components would either need to be specifically engineered to work with the main battery. Why would any manufacturer use a lithium battery when a cheaper alternative is available and requires less engineering? Obviously the answer is they wouldn't because they didn't. There is literally not enough lithium on earth to replace American cars with electric based on current usage.
With this vid at 4 years old, it's a good checklist for me to go over on a 2015 S that I'm looking at! Its got the autopilot 1.0 but it should still suit my needs . Now to see if it has the OG drive units 😅

Its really important to verify you will be allowed to keep these features. Lol its funny...imagine if you bought a used Ford and they don't believe you paid for the A.I features and they send a mechanic to remove them from your car...Tesla is somehow legally getting away with this...
I'm thinking of buying a used Tesla and I don't have a garage. What are the problems with a Tesla that's been parked outside that you mentioned @ 13:03?
I’m not sure if he covered this, but one thing you NEED to do when getting a used Tesla just is to go into service mode (there are videos on how to do this) and make sure everything is green, you will pretty much be able to see if everything is working and if anything is damaged that’s not cosmetic it will show you.
The only Tesla I ever wanted was a first gen Model S. My wife and I are talking about maybe buying a '13 that went up for sale near us. Will be using this guide for looking it over.

@@novasentia2307 really? Did you ever bought a used car with a pool or rain water in the trunk? Great info. Thank you. This might be a silly question but is there any way to know if a Model S is able to accept supercharging? I saw a few videos about some buyers that bought third party and the car did not accept supercharging. Also is there any to know if free supercharging is included with that vehicle.
So I called Tesla yesterday and asked the same question about the supercharging and they said with certain vehicles it just comes with the car -- like if you plugged it in, the supercharge will just accept "Oh this is a model with free supercharge attached". For other models, as long as it hasnt gone through a Tesla dealer -- i.e. if you bought it from a person OR from auction where it was in another person's name, it would also still have free supercharge attached.
You know how you can avoid failed powered door handles, coolant leaks to the battery that require it to be dropped, drive motor problems, terrible panel alignment. Buy a Chevy Bolt. You can buy a brand new 2020, for about 25 grand. intelligently Chevrolet put the coolant connectors on the front of the battery pack where you can get to it without dropping the battery down. Same for the power connectors. It has standard normal door handles that don't break, and I haven't heard of any issues with their powertrain making weird noises or failing. Is it as luxurious as a Tesla, as quick as a Tesla NO.. absolutely NOT. But if you just need a regular car, the Bolt actually has more rear seat legroom and headroom than a Model 3. The only real issue is the slow charging speed at DC fast chargers 53kw. Although the 2020, has a much better charging curve than the previous models. As long as the battery is warm enough it'll jump up to 53 kilowatts pretty quickly, even at very low states of charge. And then tapers nicely. I would really like to see Rich actually do a video on a Chevrolet Bolt. If anybody happens to be interested in seeing a complete teardown on one, you can go to Weber Automotive on TH-cam. He runs a hybrid and electric vehicle automotive college. He's got a great video series on the bolt including pulling the battery out completely disassembling the interior of the battery. Pulling the drive unit out completely disassembling it. Cooling system. He's pretty thorough. He also has great videos on the Toyota Priuses, Honda hybrids, and Ford hybrids.
That depends on the extension cable. But yes especially because tesla allows you to adjust the amperage you are pulling. So check the rating of the extension cable then set it to a little below that in the car and you will be good to go. On the other hand if you want to see your extension cable burst into flames set the amperage to twice its rating and wait an hour or two. The insulation will melt away. The cable will short circuit and you will be able to roast marshmallows with a lovely plastic smell.
The reason i subscribe to you is because you are honest and have good humor about Telsa. I won't buy one until i can buy parts and do service myself. Not used parts from Flea-bay.. but Tesla themselves or even aftermarket supplier. I want a used one with about 30,000 miles. Ensuring i will have it paid off before the warranty runs out. And then want to keep it for another 5 years for a decent roi. Elon.. sell parts to diy guys. Your used market will implode in the next few years if you dont. They are cars! Not cell phones!
They arent that special when you realize its still a new market and you have to be a bit different then everyone. Not everyone has a house too, to charge it!
Hi there I like watching your channel in spite of not owning a Tesla yet. By the end of this year I’ll have my Model X (hopefully). I was hoping to also help your channel with some advice. I’m a retired documentary maker, media teacher and photographer in Australia. May I strongly suggest two things to greatly improve the watch ability and flow of your channel. Firstly, please invest in a camera that has proper microphone inputs. Good cameras usually have two inputs. May I suggest you mic yourself up on channel 1 and have a hand held boom mic on channel 2. Use the boom mic in a low position to pick up the audio of those you talk to. Audio is critical for audience engagement, even more than image. Speaking of which, either switch off your cameras auto focus, as too many of your shots are out of focus. Or, make sure you know where in your frame your camera uses as the focal point. Many cameras have adjustments in this area and you may need to do some work on finding out how to get the focus to work harder and faster for you. You may need to change or instruct your ‘talent’ how to hold things to get the focus. Or you could always use cut always to show what you are talking about. Thanks for listening and I hope you are aided by what I suggest. Regards Stephen.
I listen to the channel in the background and seldom actually watch. I've never had a problem with his audio. Perhaps it's that notorious Down Under ping affecting things for ya.
I am amazed by the comments, has noone ever bought a used car before. Every car make has a list of faults as long as your arm to check for and I have always looked these up before looking at any used car to buy - and I am old. Mine had some. It went away. Had someone detail it, came back months later tail light is ded. yes DED. Turn signal is fine for now. Service appt this week
I always try to purchase used cars with the warranty, cause if you miss anything the warranty can take care of it. When I bought my used p85 it had warranty and I also purchased the extended warranty which has honestly paid itself off, these cars especially the earlier ones are riddled with issues.
Dang, wish I watched this before I just bought a used Model S. I am getting a new battery as the existing one was defective. Once that is complete I will have the car and now do a better inspection. Hoping I don’t find any other issues. The dealer is paying for the battery replacement and a clunking noise heard when making a right hand turn.

Dude, you are a brave soul to chance a Tesla out of warranty. While I hate Tesla and Elon for their anti-consumer approach to business, I wish you only the best of luck with the vehicle.
Rich it's the words 70 Point inspection that they tell the customer to put the customer at ease and to make the customers help feel secure and it is like every inch of the car is checked and tested a 110% and you will have no issues for pre owned. But then it should become a 101 Point inspection if they promise us a car with zero issues
For auto auctions, other than bolts missing underneath or even driving the vehicle... is there a way that a person can verify a battery has not been removed? Maybe using a multimeter to measure current at some location?
I heard since the battery is so heavy and takes up so much space, the vehicle would be higher off the ground than normal, plus if you tap it, it would sound hollow.
@@alexanderrobins7497 Nope. Teslas have ride control height and crashed cars deflate the suspension. I know where you got that info and he is dead wrong about assuring there's a battery in the car. The ONLY way to tell is if you drive it.

I live in Canada so I have a winter climate question? How does the Tesla do with rust due to salt in cold weather climates? I know the body panels are aluminum but what about the undercarriage? They've been building these for long enough now that rust issue should be starting to show up especially in Snowbelt areas.
Any feedback for which one has more longevity - Model S or Model 3?....I drive my cars over 10years and close to 300,000 miles as my current '05 Camry after owning it for 16 yrs
At 4:00 there is that laud noise of brake-booster pump. Does that apply to every EV in general? Because I have a 2012 Smart ED and the noise is really loud.
You can see what the 100% charge range will be by going on the Tesla mobile app and on the charging screen where you set the charge limit, if you drag all the way to the right it'll show a preview of the 100% range.
@richrebuilds did you see the jalopnik article a few days ago about the guy who bought a used Tesla from a car dealer, the dealer bought the car from a Tesla auction, and sold it with functioning autopilot. Tesla promptly disabled it, saying the new owner didn't pay for it. Even though they sold the car to the dealer with the option.
This video was actually very informative and had legit advice... which was very strange for a Rich Rebuilds video, but a nice change of pace compared to his normal videos. :) Kidding aside, great video, the clips of how the car looks when it's bad are helpful, and a good cause sponsor!
The criticism of the Tesla 3 is that it has problems with wind noise . Thus, it is not so quiet when you are sitting in the car especially not when driving fast . Others even complain about hard suspension And that it is felt when driving on a road that is not smooth and fine. Then the car is low above the ground so there can be problems if you are going to drive over high curbs or if you are going to drive in the forest . If you want a quieter Tesla that you can even raise so that it is higher above the ground when driving in certain places . So, the Tesla S is probably preferable. and it has air suspension thus Better suspension comfort

Most cars on the Tesla used site now have actual pictures (have been for a while now). You can even see the left/right arrows when he hovers his mouse cursor on the cars. Clicking those will show you the actual pictures.
Kicking a tire while you keep your hands in your pockets is mandatory for buying a used car. No need for any other checking then that!
In other words, stay away from a used Telsa. Geez what a basket case..

Are we meant to notice that ALL the examples of how equipment on Tesla's SHOULDN'T sound or work, are of equipment on Delores? 😂
Good man, Rich 🤗
Don't forget that if you scroll through the photos of the cars on the Tesla site, most listings will have actual images of the car for sale after you get through the rendered images. They typically highlight any dents or dings. The extended warranty that they offer with refurbished cars also gives a lot of peace of mind.
I don’t have a Tesla, or looking to buy one, but Mr. Rich is a treat to watch!
Uncle Rich out there doing the Lord's work!
AMEN brother! (PS: i'm white)
Rich:. "Nobody wants a Chevy Bolt"
Bolt Owner: Slow your roll there
Rich should make that H1 - Humvee full electric by pulling out the old diesel engine and add 2 Tesla motors on each axle, adding 2 big batteries on rear and re-using the front compartment where the diesel engine was as a frunk-trunk.. "Tesla-H1" i'm pretty sure any fat-burgers & yankee-doodles will love it !
At least the Bolt has a heated steering wheel. Missing in model 3.
As a Bolt owner I laughed. It's a fine car, but I say that as a commuter car and family hauler. If it's just me on the weekend I'm driving the Miata.
2020 Bolts got a bump in battery capacity and a lower price
How the reliability because Chevy doesnt have a great track record on their reliability

@@whuzzzup you are probably exactly right

Wow, Rich! you really know your Teslas. May one day I'll put all your info to use and go get me a used Model S. Keep up the good work
Your right, here is a model S performance in the UK, checked the vin for outstanding bulletins and it’s needing the exploding dash airbag replaced before it kills someone!! OUTSTANDING from UK Tesla dealer.
Tesla really lacks some serious quality control.

Just replaced a door handle gear and the AGM battery. Really hoping I don't get all of these other problems. You're frightening me rich.
Working on my Tesla has been a pain in the ass.
Why do Tesla use a12V AGM battery? LiFePO4 are cheap and don’t degrade from storage.
@@Dave5843-d9m probably to run the normal car electronics like window motors and wipers.
@@justcommenting4981 A LiFePO4 would work the exact same for that, its still a 12v battery
@@justcommenting4981 or they could just use a step down circuit to 12v

10:54 This...
There is an article on Jalopnik about recent used Tesla buyer where they removed the self driving features from the car remotely. Its really important to verify you will be allowed to keep these features.
Lol its funny...imagine if you bought a used Ford and they don't believe you paid for the A.I features and they send a mechanic to remove them from your car...Tesla is somehow legally getting away with this...

In the good old days, buying meant you owned it and leasing meant you didn't.
I'm thinking of buying a used Tesla and I don't have a garage. What are the problems with a Tesla that's been parked outside that you mentioned @ 13:03?
Great conversion Rich and team… best of both worlds V8 powered and all that Tesla offers
I’m not sure if he covered this, but one thing you NEED to do when getting a used Tesla just is to go into service mode (there are videos on how to do this) and make sure everything is green, you will pretty much be able to see if everything is working and if anything is damaged that’s not cosmetic it will show you.
I want to see more comment from the haters. Must be nice to live on another world.
yes an exemple Teslas are not well build cars period.
The only Tesla I ever wanted was a first gen Model S. My wife and I are talking about maybe buying a '13 that went up for sale near us. Will be using this guide for looking it over.
That are a lot of possible flaws.

You do the best in-place ads. Hands down!
Great info.
Love the primer-grey so much. Keep up the great work man.
One of the most entertaining yet informative videos on buying a used Tesla. Thanks for doing this!
This is going to be useful information for the people who can afford a Tesla
I don't see myself owning an E.V. ever, but Uncle Rich is the best. He is a gem in the E.V. world. There are too many fanboys polluting the landscape.
Hey, Rich. I love your videos. You motivate me to watch for a used model S in Europe. Keep it up.
I love your deep deep loving of Tesla and their ability to give satisfaction.
My 3 has a failed tail light due to condensation.
Can we charger the car with a extension cable
So, what you are saying is you'll never get a Tesla.
Hard to believe people drool over these cars. They have a long way to go.
They arent that special when you realize its still a new market and you have to be a bit different then everyone. Not everyone has a house too, to charge it!
Your unique perspective on Tesla is something every company needs!
Hi there
I like watching your channel in spite of not owning a Tesla yet.
Regards
Stephen.
Stephen Woods great advice but riches channel has grown very fast in the last two years i dont think he needs your advice
I listen to the channel in the background and seldom actually watch. I've never had a problem with his audio.

I am amazed by the comments, has noone ever bought a used car before. Every car make has a list of faults as long as your arm to check for and I have always looked these up before looking at any used car to buy - and I am old. This is a video about Tesla covering mostly 2 models. Yep it has faults, so does every other car, thank you Rich for providing us with details on this car.
Look for missing bolts under the car, but skip over the rust?
My tesla came with fog in the taillight. I thought this was a standard feature.
Yo lol I 😂😂
You may eventually need to top off your tail light fluid though.
What? You didn't want fog lights?
Mine had some. It went away. Had someone detail it, came back months later tail light is ded. yes DED. Turn signal is fine for now. Service appt this week
How silly! Tell them that you want 2 fog lights.
I always try to purchase used cars with the warranty, cause if you miss anything the warranty can take care of it. When I bought my used p85 it had warranty and I also purchased the extended warranty which has honestly paid itself off, these cars especially the earlier ones are riddled with issues.
Hahahah the twerking in front of the hummer 😂
Dang, wish I watched this before I just bought a used Model S. I am getting a new battery as the existing one was defective. Once that is complete I will have the car and now do a better inspection. Hoping I don’t find any other issues. The dealer is paying for the battery replacement and a clunking noise heard when making a right hand turn.
Rich , if my Tesla breaks I will bring it to your garage to have it fixed.
You guys seem very knowledgeable and honest and I think your garage might be the best choice in southern New England for Teslas out of warranty.

Also checkout our electrified garage website we can provide a range of mods and add ins we can install for you.
5:00 nice transition to the pitch 👍🏽
For auto auctions, other than bolts missing underneath or even driving the vehicle... is there a way that a person can verify a battery has not been removed? Maybe using a multimeter to measure current at some location?
Drive it.
