- Why does my Compressor trip my circuit breaker?
I change out my circuit breaker to see if that solves my problem.

Why does my Compressor trip my circuit breaker - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
I'm an electrician so I will give you some free advice :-)
To start, your compressor can be wired to run on a 120volt circuit or 240 volt circuit.
Yours in particular is wired to run on 115/120 volts ( 1 hot - 1 neutral with ground) 230/ 240 volt is ( 2 hots with ground "3 wire" or with a neutral "4 wire")?
If you look at your nameplate on the motor of the compressor it gives you the specs for current rating "FLA' ( Full Load Amps), 7.5 amps @ 230/240 volts or 15 amps @ 115/120 volts.
The reason you're tripping your house breaker and not the generator is due to the fact your house breaker is a 15 Amp while your generator is a 20 Amp and your house breaker has other loads on it ( garage lights, etc..) Breakers are designed to work on "continuous loads" of 80% of rating( so 80% of 15 is 12), you are @ 15 Amps "continuous" with that generator, already exceeding the 80% factor of the breaker and that does not include the lights and whatever is on that circuit.
Over time your breaker becomes weaker and can no longer hold the current like a 'NEW" breaker would, hence why the NEW breaker is holding :-)
The new breaker will eventually start doing the same thing :-( You need to run a 20 Amp circuit to your garage for that compressor or a 15 Amp 2-pole breaker- 230/240 volt circuit.
I wish I lived closer to you , I could come add the circuit/ breaker and you could record it for "how to video" by a Licensed electrician :-)

Thanks for the explanation. That helps a lot. Since my panel box is in a finished part of the basement It's really difficult to get run a new circuit into my garage or I would take you advice and do that. I wish you lived closer too. That would be a great video. I guess if the new breaker starts doing the same thing I'll be replacing it again. I really don't use the compressor very often so it will probably last a while. papa Wattz 👍I studied on that data plate too. Thought same. Good of you to volunteer the info & svc if closer. Not to many of us "old skool" proper peeps around anymore wishing to help one another. Seems everyone nowadays is lookin to get "rich" off of one job! Shame.

I'm glad I put the picture of the plate in the video because it actually answered a lot of questions. I think I may have a 20 amp circuit in my garage that may also need a breaker change so I am going to look into that.

Could possibly be a bad run or start capacitor. I recently had the same problem and it was the runcapacitor
It seems to work fine when I connect it to a 20 amp circuit.

My Speed Air is tripping the breaker only when it starts with head pressure. It starts fine at zero psi.
I think there’s an unloader valve that’s not working?

Well it looks like you got your answer already. 15 amps continuous load on a 15 amp breaker isn't really a good combo.
My compressor runs on 230V and pulls a constant 22 amps so it's connected to a 30 amp double pole breaker. Installed the circuit myself. Fun times. It pulls enough power that LED light bulbs get a little flickery while it's on.
Yeah. It makes sense now. I dint think about that before. Running it 230 splits the amps in half on each side. I would run a new circuit myself but I don't have clear access to my breaker box. It's in a finished area in my basement. I'm going to see if the other circuit in my garage may be 20 amp.
Your compressor is huge and I'm sure you use yours. I really don't have much need for a compressor that's why I waited so long just to change out the breaker.

I don't use the compressor very much but the breaker definitely helped. It really needs a 20-amp circuit but I don't have access to one.

Yeah. They seem like a well built unit but unfortunately they motors can go bad.
I’d say get a compressor that’s built within the last 10 years and you will have no problem.
I don't really need or use the compressor so I don't want to spend any money on a newer one. I might use it a little more now it won't trip the breaker. Lol.
I have a new one doing same thing... My old house has 15 amp breakers...as explained to me in comments. 🙂
