  • In this video I start to investigate why my SIP air compressor keeps tripping the overload breaker. I test both the start and run capacitors with a Fluke 77 IV multimeter which has capacitance testing. ⬇️💥⬇️ Links Below & Donations ⬇️💥⬇️ These turn out to be ok so it's off with the drive belt and onto the one way check valve to see if that's working.

    Had the same symptoms on an air compressor. Followed your steps and found a small piece of rusty rock or whatever in the one way valve. The tank had never been water drained and there was A LOT of water in the tank. After cleaning the valve and putting it back together it works perfect. Thanks for sharing.

Before going down the route of buying expensive capacitors I thought I would look on TH-cam for a video with the same symptoms and I came upon your video. Another informative video Mark! Ive a smaller Clarke compressor that ive had since about 1993 when I had a car to spray aftr re-build. It has been a faithful companion with only minor maintenace however, one year the overload that cuts the motor off when pressure is reached failed to trip till about 15% over- on occasion it tripped the dump-valve. I replaced the pressure-switch as they warned us apprentices of the dangers compressed air can cause if not respected. I do remember some of my theory classes back in the day!

      Thank you Patrick. I did a couple of resprays around 1993/95 with cellulose but then the EU was talking about banning it and only 2 pack would be aloud. Never sure what came of that. I loved paint spraying it was so rewarding watching the panel change colour. You need ideal conditions though or else lol.
      You mention some good points to bear in mind with a compressor. I always fear the rusting of the tank and it ripping open.

    Life saver, have the same compressor, just a bit older and 1 capacitor . Ours used to stall on re starting. The capacitor had blown (40uf off memory) replaced that and it lasted about a week . I didn’t check the valve block / non return valve as the compressor turned over easily by hand with no resistance.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine works most of the time now but still has issues occasionally. My next step would be to replace these " On the underneath of the MDR1 Pressure switch there is an unloader valve with a 6mm push in connection. The function of the unloader valve is to remove the pressure from the piston of a compressor so that when it re-starts it can move freely and prevent the motor from stalling."
      The MDR1 pressure switch is supplied with a delayed unloader valve (AEV 1S) as standard.

    • @CoatsandGaiters

      It can be the check valve on the tank or the little thin black pipe going to the switch. If pressure seeps back to the piston the resistance will be too much for the motor to maintain initially.

    Great video, nicely explained. I've experienced similar symptoms on a 3hp compressor that runs off normal domestic socket (I'm sure this should have been a 16a socket), it sometimes trips garage circuit breaker or the garage supply from the main board in the house and sometimes both but never the overload switch on the actual compressor itself. It did pop a capacitor few years ago but I did replace run & start caps with caps of the same ratings. At least watching your video has given me some ideas of what to check next 👍

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you again for the compliment. Turned out to be the tank one way valve or check valve. I still had a few issues every so often. I thought it cant be the check valve but it was. It's never tripped once since I changed that and I use this daily. I think you also need a healthy spur line going straight to the consumer unit with a 16amp plug.

  • @mib20000
    @mib20000 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a 25gallon 2 hp craftsman compressor. Mine never trips the unit breaker but mine trips the house breaker. I ordered a check valve and hope that works.. where is the unloader valve located in a compressor? looks like the check valve and unloader valve is the same thing?

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  ปีที่แล้ว

      The check valve is the copper pipe that feeds the big tank and has a one way valve inside. The unloader valve is tiny on the end of a black pipe going to the electrical switch unit on the compressor. The house breaker may be struggling with the sudden power surge required to start the compressor. There is a large power spike as soon as the compressor starts up.

  • @rohawaha
    @rohawaha 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very helpful troubleshooting video , I went to a garage sale and bought a very nice 30 gallon compressor in like new condition. I tested it before buying it and it ran and shut off properly . It is a vertical or upright tank unit. Of course I laid it on it's back in my work van to transport home to my shop and it got bumped around . Upon starting it in my work shop , it would run until it reached 95 PSI and trip the breaker .
    Now I know where to look after testing the capacitors . P.S. I am a Marine Electrician , years ago I worked in an electrical shop and a careless young man had got a terrible shock from a capacitor
    smaller than the ones you were handling . I think your fear and caution was warranted. Thank You for addressing this International problem " I am in Florida USA " Have you ever considered working for the United Nations ? They could use your problem solving skills !

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's exactly what happened to this compressor. It was fine for years, then we moved and it obviously got bumped around in the removal van. Next thing it kept tripping the breaker when pressure was high in the tank. I think my problem solving is driven by my tightness to not spend money unless absolutely essential lol

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi I have received your email and the wiring on yours is the same as mine. So yours should be correct. I have Main Power Brown + going to trip, then the black from trip going to a double black on the running capacitor where one of those black wires goes into the motor alongside the grey wire also from the running capacitor. On the other side we have the Main Power Neutral - changing to a Yellow wire going into the motor and next to that yellow wire is a Blue and Grey wire coming out to the Start Capacitor with main earth connected to motor housing. I have emailed 6 photo's to you as well. Check the little black pipe from the one way tank valve that goes to the pressure switch on the tank. That turned out to be my issue of the compressor tripping the trip. I removed the sensor pipe and there is a little spring pin on the end. Make sure the pipe is clear and the pin operating correctly. I blew WD40 down the pipe. Think a bit of grit got down mine and caused the issue.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The symptom I had was if the tank pressure was lowered by letting some air out it would work fine and the motor wouldn't trip but if it was near max pressure the motor couldn't do it and blew trip. Since clearing that thin black pipe and checking the little pin valve its been running fine ever since.

    • @sylwinkassem2274
      @sylwinkassem2274 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      After removing the black tubing from the one way at the end of the tank,air compressor runs continuously no problems.reconnect the black tubing and compressor runs 10-15 seconds and shuts off,wait for the reset button to click then press and runs only runs again 10-15seconds
      Where should i be focusing on?.

      It may be the air release valve under the pressure switch. Theres a thin rigid pipe that allows the air to leak initially as the compressor starts. If this doesn't release the pressure in the cylinder is too much and the motor draws heavy amperage and trips. search "Condor EV 1S Unloader Valve for MDR1"

    Just fyi, yes UK voltage is 220-240VAC, however this is actually RMS voltage, peak voltage is actually sqrt(2)*Vrms which is around 311-339V. This would be one of the main reasons why you couldn't use the 250VAC capacitor. It would essentially blow up as it overvoltages.

    Hey! Nice, cheap fix :)
    I've never had one of these type of capacitors that had a charge after taking it off. They very quickly bleed off their charge through the motor winding after being powered off. It's still ofcourse best practice to not touch the terminals and safely discharge them, in case for instance the windings were open. Even then it's still AC passing throught them, so it's likely they won't have much of a charge anyway.
    So how exactly does the depressuring of the piston work? Whenever there's no pressure in the air release pipe, some actuator opens a valve in the compressor, depressurizing the cylinder?
    All the best!

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darn did I say that? like you say it would discharge through the secondary winding and charge very rapidly as soon as power is applied. My first comment had to be from a smart person catching me out didn't it haha. The depressurising takes place with a little solenoid valve as I understand in the pressure switch housing. It closes when powered on and then drops open when power is cut off. Thank you and all the best to you and no more catching me out lol

    SO Did you ever find the problem?

      In the end it was the little black pipe with the unloader valve on the end which went to the pressure switch. Think grit got into it and stopped the tiny pin from moving up and down against the pressure switch. I sprayed wd40 and air into the pipe to clean it and so far it's been working. The clue was it always worked when the tank pressure was half but tripped when the air pressure was higher.

      That would be an issue but you can normally get the schematic on the item and it will have the values on that.

      The problem turned out to be the air tank check valve.
