I agree that it's hard trying to daily an Emira. The other day I went to the shop to buy a paper, the shop is 2 miles away. 40 minutes and 30 miles later I arrived, I'd gone the scenic route! It's a car you just want to drive.
LOL…love this 😂
Haha! This made me laugh!
I've been driving my Elise S2 daily for the last 14 years. Of course you can daily drive an Emira ! XD
I bought an emira and sold it for a cayman, no end of problems with it. The car was new and it was in the garage for 2 months waiting for them to update a chip in the engine and when it came back the fans failed, they need to sort out the problems with it. The Porsche is the best car I have ever driven, sounds amazing
The plethora of issues put me off and I ended up buying a V6 manual F-type. Bloody amazing car and it's been very reliable.
@@JWL-UK Yeah great car, I had the V8
The Cayman is in a different league, much. much better car.
@@JWL-UK Same here, great daily driver and the sound is epic! Mine is almost 10 years old ! and no problems. And it has a timeless design that I think will always look great.
@@AJF4Me cool stuff, is yours a manual, too?
Head says Porsche. Heart says Lotus. Nice comparison Ped, but disappointed you didn't try to fit the bike in 😂
Next time!
Can you buy a roof rack? 😂😂
Head says 2024 Tesla Model 3 performance. 😮
@@fjalics Yeah, but you have to see the car each time you walk up to it ... 🤮🤮
@@dwinterx I like the way the Tesla looks. The Lotus too. I don't dislike the Porche, but I'm not crazy about it. Also, I don't want to burn gas, and I drive a 2018 dual motor Model 3, and just love the way an EV powertrain works. Instant torque, one pedal driving, no noise, no stink, AWD grip off the line. I heard the new Model 3 performance has suspension and brake upgrades, and will torch this Porche and Lotus off the line with it's 2.9 sec 0-60 and 500hp. In traffic, it's a beast.
I’m a real Porsche nut, but after standing next to an Emira yesterday at Goodwood and now watching this video, the want for the Lotus is really growing. 😍
👍
Don't be fooled, there is a term "show bag" looks good on the outside but is sh1t on the inside. Lotus is now spelt Geely.
Congrats Peter on your extremely well balanced review. The way you highlight that specialness of the Lotus is so true and the essence of what owning special cars is all about. Bravo!
Many thanks!
That supercharger...! Petrol heads of my age will be reminded of the sound of a rally prepared mini with a straight-cut gearbox.
Your comments on driving the Emira are why EVs will never be on many drivers shopping list. ❤ Really enjoyed this video.👏
I have a 981 Spyder, getting a Model Y Performance to replace my P85D. You have to drive a Tesla to know what you’re talking about. Tesla for daily driving, Porsche for weekends. The Spyder is the most beautiful Porsche I’ve seen.
Nice comparison! I bought an Emira after driving both the Cayman and the Lotus and, as other comments say, it was heart over head for me. The Porsche was superb but the Lotus just felt somehow more special. I've owned it 9 months now, done 6k miles from new (including a road trip around Ireland - where I did have enough space for bags in the end!) and it's been brilliant. A couple of niggles but nothing to worry about. Hard to resist driving it everywhere!
Nice 👌
Both Porsche GTS and Lotus Emira are all mine I have now.
They are all really gorgeous sport cars.
That supercharger whine is very addictive.....much better than any turbo noise!
Yep 👍
I’ve got an Emira V6 manual and I think this is the best review I’ve seen. Spot on. You have to work for it and that is what makes it so rewarding.
Much appreciated!
"The Drive" section narrative was superb motoring journalism. So well summed up as to what 'us' drivers want in a car; feeling, control, manual, etc.
Well said PP!
Ah thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for another brilliant video. You are so lucky to have such brilliant driver's roads near you.
I am indeed 🙏🏻
Seen a few Emira's on the road and I think they look great. Agree the price is the issue for this car. Green and tan lightly used for £60k stacks up well. Loads out there. I'm a little biased with a 718 4.0 Spyder, but the Boxster/Cayman still pips it for me brand new....
Best Emira video I’ve seen Pete. You are superb reviewer as you are so honest and pick up on the points real people would. Excellent
Wow, thank you!
The sound of the Emira going past, when you had the camera at the side of the road was amazing.
Indeed 👍
Much as I love a Porsche, if I had the money it would be the Lotus every time. It looks absolutely stunning and it's just a lot more special. But that's if we're choosing between these two.
My absolute fave at the moment is the original R8 GT. And it would have to be the one with the wind in the hair experience. I nearly bought one on a whim a year or so ago. I wish I had.
I think I’ve bought most of my cars on whim 👍
Until Lotus is broken :)
@@oneeleven9832 I'm too analytical. That's why I didn't buy the R8. I need to do the emotional thing from now on.
Engine is not special 😂
Great work, awesome and very fair review.. best and most insightful Emira review so far. Subscribed 👍
Thanks for the sub. Welcome aboard!
With both these cars, in the end, it's all about the sound(s) so it's the 6 cylinder version(s) that's the best....
Great review, as usual. I had an Emira for a weekend and came to exactly the same conclusion. Cheers
Thanks! 👍
Btw. Great video. Side shot at ~24 mins with the sky - ❤.
Been following you for about 5 years and the the ‘production’ has matured nicely (not that I am in any way an expert, I still chop people’s heads off in photos) but there is a continuity in your style that makes content so watchable.
Ah thanks for the feedback. That’s nice to hear 🙏🏻
Cool cars. Love your videos. Funny that every time I watch your videos the introduction always brings back memories of my fathers Jaguar 420G. Remember him pressing that starter button.
That is awesome!
Had my Emira for a year now and am loving it. Previously owned a 997 GTS and getting into the Emira just feels like a special occasion by comparison.
This is a brilliant review and finally someone recognising the benefits of keeping a special car special. Fantastic content and I’ve got to say you’re a tremendous presenter.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
The Porsche is the sensible buy, financially and mechanically but the Lotus wins the heart every time. Another fab video Pete, your videos are always full of emotion and from the heart, never change!
Thanks mate. Much appreciated 👍
I own a lotus and have had 2 lotus previously, i use an elan as a daily and what i find about the lotus the more you use it the better it gets its the only brand that has heart
That was a very fair review. I tried the Emira vs a 4.0 GTS (including taking the GTS round the Porsche handling circuit) but ended up sticking with my Evora Sport 410 as it felt more special than either of them - it is a a weekend and odd track day car car rather than a daily driver. Thanks Pete
Thanks 🙏🏻
What a great balanced review Pete. Exceptional vid. We're fortunate enough to be heading down for a trip through France and Spain in my Boxster T for my mate's JJ's birthday. He'll be driving his...... dark verdant green V6 Emira!! We can't wait.
Have fun!
Great video, thanks Pete 👍🏻 you can daily an Emira, one of my mates uses his as a station car. When I have driven Emira back to back with my 718 spyder I find the Emira more exhilarating and a better drivers car. It really is brilliant. The spyder is more of a head than a heart car. I bought mine for touring, has great luggage space, although Emira has better ride by a long way. The Emira has a few issues though. 1) is that appalling square and fat steering wheel. 2) the brakes are over servoed 3) it has a degree of rev hang, although it's much better than my 430CUP was in that respect. LOTUS have said they won't do a convertible so all round the boxster wins as a proposition BUT the Emira is a better drivers car and more fun / exciting. Therefore you can make a case for both. And Emira's now a tad over £60k used with low miles! And thanks for the mention 😎👍🏻 14 x 675LT's, 1,000 miles each over 3 days, not a single issue
Great comment ... We are all Pedlers yeahh 😍😍
@Bispal… didn’t take notice of your name until you mentioned your 675LT. I’ve read your posts on Pistonheads… always interesting.
@@skramer6483 Hope I didn't put you to sleep 🤣👍🏻
@@bispal hell, no! 😂. I have a 981 GT4. A McLaren, unless my numbers come up, is too rich for me but I like reading owners experiences etc.. your contributions are always measured and considered unlike some… well you know. I quite like the Emira though I’ve not driven one. The 718 F4 flavour doesn’t work for me.
I presume this must be a joke to suggest that it’s somehow a feat to have a car do 1,000 miles without an issue, what planet are you on. My 12c had no issues during my ownership, fa
Great video ped. I love it when you can really jell with a car for the perfect driving experience. I may have only ever had that maybe 3/4 cars in my history of motoring where I get that experience. 😊😊
Couldn't agree more!
beautifully produced video and love the cars
Many thanks!
Many thanks for the comparison- after a DB9, which just didn’t get used, we opted for a 987 Boxster 3.4S. Very happy with it, and of course, 6 speed manual and flat 6, the two points you made against your Boxster.
We were interested in your comparison, as a local had bought one, and those supercar looks and Lotus philosophy made us wonder about a change ( when the Lotus has aged a little!). Your comparison seems right on the money.
Took a V6 emira out for a test drive yesterday. Absolutely exhilarating. The sound is intoxicating and the gearbox is fantastic. Have not driven a 718 GTS so cannot compare the two, but certainly am seriously considering the emira as my only car (I drive only on the weekend).
Great review - you captured the experience really well.
Best of luck 👍
Love these comparison videos!
Glad you like them!
Peter, the dream is having both. The nightmare is selecting only one. I love top down driving. And that is what would put me in the Porsche. But I would still lust after the style and presence of the Lotus. And then there is handling. Bugger, the Lotus is always going to win. OK Lotus, will you please cut the top of an Emira. Great video mate. I don't think I would want to be in your shoes when you have to hand that yellow thing back.
Great review. Sold my 911 for a Cayman. Drove a Elise and sold the Cayman, for me it’s the drive. Almost bought a Emira but I am a biker so my daily Elise is practical enough. When I am old (im only 50s) and have to give up,porkers or Emira, maybe. Great insight thanks. Why not have special everyday, whilst you can. We live once, they are built to drive… Still we are all different.
Wow. This takes me back. 2003 and I was doing the same comparison - Elise vs Boxster. I chose the Elise and loved it. As an accountant, I actually priced up consumables and running costs. 20 yrs later (and aside from wishing I had kept it - it’s worth as much now as it was then!), and I’m wishing the same, but the price…. Oh well, it shall remain a Verdant dream….Kids have put paid to that…!! Excellent impartial video - really enjoyed that.
Thanks for this 👍
Same, bought the Elise, also wish I had never sold it as it would be worth more than I paid for it, bought an AR spider but still regret selling that Elise to this day
@@OleGitRule still wistfully follow the forums… 😔
Lucky enough to meet Petrol Ped last night in Torino. Absolute gentleman, hope you had a good day. Love the looks of the Lotus but for the time being I will stick with my cayman until I see if lotus is still lots of trouble etc. Went on the rooftop track today, Get a bloomin move on playing
Oh mate. So chuffed you commented. Fantastic meeting you and thanks so much for the drinks. Much appreciated. Hope you have a brilliant remainder of your holiday 👍👊
The Boxster GTS is a cracking car but the thing that swayed me to an Emira was that slightly more analogue/old school feel you get but with the added benefit of the creature comforts, I sold a Caterham 7 420r for the Emira. The hydraulic steering, manual gear box, great suspension, supercharged V6, rapped in a beautiful shell, were too much to miss and are all going to be a thing of the past, in the not to distant future. Great review though Peter.
Cheers 👍
Really enjoyed your review. Have driven ( not owned)an Elise and Esprit. Will always carry a torch for Colin Chapman's progeny. Porsches PDK is the gold srandard for non-manuals. But for me my dream car has to be a manual. And light. And reliable. And still functional. Nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder turbo- I like the one in my Type R- but it will never sound as good as either the Emira or any 6 cylinder Porsche.
All cars are compromised. But not all cars are truly special. These two are. If this is the last non-hybrid, non-electric Lotus sports car, not a bad finale.
Cheers see you Monday
The two cars that I’d love to own above all others: McLaren F1 and Ferrari Dino. That may sound odd- they are very different things. However, they both have mid-mounted engines, double wishbone control arms, manual gearboxes, non-electric power steering, nicely damped ride with lean in the turns (not overly stiff), and gorgeous looks. For me, the only car on sale today that hits those boxes is the Lotus. Thats why I ordered one. In a day where ICE cars are being dulled with electronic aids, or replaced with EVs, it’s the one I want to keep.
Perhaps one of the best explanations of differences between how cars drive that I’ve ever heard in a car review. When I test drove a ‘6’ Boxster it sounded glorious and was so so competent in its own ability, that i actually came away underwhelmed. You just explained really well what I like in a car. Something that needs you to think, and work at to drive well, and will test you. The Boxster is very rapid, but your just a passenger, a happy passenger but just a passenger
Agree Lotus need to find a way to get it topless !
Many thanks 👍
8:53
You see the Lotus engine.
That is important
Excellent video
Excellent cars.
Great video. Both lovely cars. I like the Lotus decal, styling & colour. Still a big Porsche fan though and somehow it seems more attainable & more practical as an everyday driver.
Totally agree
Fantastic video and fair comparison
Thanks! 👍
Best vid of the week Pete. 👍👍. Think I’d need to knock my lounge wall down so I could park it inside so I could stare at its good looks all the time. 👍👍and yes dark green best colour I’ve seen
😂😂😂
Put 15th Sep in your diary. Hoping to run a cycling challenge with Goodwood on the track. I want to see how far I can ride between 10-4. Fancy joining the gang ?
@@PetrolPed sure thing I’m free that day. 🚴🚴🚴
I used my 992 C2S as a daily and know what you mean about retaining the ‘specialness’ . I didn’t care about mileage as such as it was a car I always wanted and it had to be enjoyed. Now I have a 2022 S3 and a 996 C4S and I believe the best of both worlds.
Thanks for sharing
I was going to say those roads look like my route for a drive out, near Chilgrove/Petworth/ Chichester yeah? Great video, very enjoyable watch. 🤩
Yep. Lavant to South Harting and then past Upark 👍
@PetrolPed good routes, least will be once resurfaced; all those potholes. The hill climb is good fun when quiet too! 👍
Mechanical throttle cable. High-pitched supercharger whine. WHAT A TIME.
Magnificent cars both. The lotus in yellow looks stunning 🎉
It really is!
Nice review. Thanks. Love my Emira, best looking car😍
Thanks 🙏🏻
The Lotus is my favourite 😊
finally, some return to form!, great video, great cars and perfect weather for a drop top!, I'd still take the Lotus.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Oh dear thank you very much, most of my driving life I wanted to own a Lotus and almost bought one before i bought my 911 sc. But watching this video makes me want to get that Lotus...
Enjoyed the vid and fair comparisons. For a European tour the Porsche wins, its got the storage space and its much quieter! The Lotus sounds noisy, your voice was raised in the vid. That noise would grate on a road trip!
Is is certainly louder 👍
What a great review. It’s could still tempt me. I’m really thinking of going manual again. I love the PDK and it makes the Cayman rapid and also easy in traffic, but as its not my daily I miss a manual. Only problem is I have had it 5 years now and am very attached to it. And maybe in a few years time I will be glad its PDK. I don’t know, fist world problems 😂
Great video, Pete. Very informative.
Personally, I am a Porsche guy. But that Emira …
I saw one in the flesh and it is impressive. And then a six pot manual…. That is a proper Lotus 😃👍👍👍
Cheers 👍
Wow this was a terrific video 😊. I enjoyed every minute! Two great cars without question with the perfect power to enjoy a great British B road. As a Boxster Owner I love my flat 6 but even I was tempted by that supercharger whine! I could never sell my Boxster… but that Lotus could one day be the one to sit beside it lol
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video and if I had to choose one, it would be the lotus 👍
Good review, Harry speaks very highly of his Emira too, but probably a better comparison with the Boxster would be the 4 cylinder AMG powered automatic Emira, I noticed you said the gearbox isn’t good but a comparison would explain this. I’m sure the Boxster would win but I’m biased, however I’d like to see Lotus do well.👍
The gearbox in the AMG Emira isn’t great 😢
Nice video. Would just flag that it is not too difficult to draw a proper price comparison between the Emira and the Boxter/Cayman GTS new, or used of similar age/mileage this is the most appropriate comparison to make and there isn't much of a difference. A GT4 is a different animal. I am a year and 6k miles into Emira ownership and thoroughly enjoying the ride. Biggest smiles per mile of all my sports/exotica over the years. Would also highlight that that space behind the rear seats is very useful in size, shape and practicality - we did the NC500 over a couple of weeks last May and fitted in all our gear and food and cameras/drones in with no difficulty (even taking some of the gear from our fellow travellers in their F-type)
Great review. If you want a car for an enjoyable weekend sunny morning drive why would you not want a convertible? I like the Emira (especially the looks in the green and the sound), but until they offer a soft top option, I’ll stick with my 981 PDK Flat 6 Boxster S and enjoy every minute of top down driving!
The Porsche i find is very hard to beat but the lotus styling steals my heart
My Evora 400 has an epic note
In practice I disagree on the storage part, I can fit golf clubs in the Emira boot and can’t put this anywhere in the booster, the room behind the seats can really take quite a bit as well.
Agree with all the points you made - Looks Emira (its a mini 488 - which you can get for 120K...), Storage (Boxster/Cayman) wins by a mile (I regularly do a weekly supermarket shop for 4 using the frunk), drive (hard one that - Emira edges it - shame you cant get manual in the 4 pot), I don't like the Supercharger sound its too much of a whine - and a 6-Pot Boxster (new GTS) - sound not noise; but its the price - for 90K go for a Cayman (or save yourself 20K and get one with a few miles on it. But then the Emira is beautiful
Really enjoyed this one. My head says your boxster. Heart says emira.
Mine too!
Power of both cars are adequate, we really do not need more than 350/400 bhp on the public road. The Porsche credentials are legendary. I know the Lotus looks superior, however the Boxter/cayman wins every time. And I'd still say that if they were the same cost. At £90k, i agree, loads of cars out there. A used 992 would be on my shopping list.
Both great cars, I’d be happy with either but forced to choose between the two I’d go for the Lotus. Main reason being whenever I go out I know I’m going to see a number of Porsche’s as they are incredibly popular in my area. The last Lotus I saw was a primrose yellow Elan weeks ago so the rarity would definitely attract me. Great video as always 👍
Nice 👌
Me personally Pete, I would just probably enjoy both of those cars without judgement or opinion .. However i am drawn to your passion mate... Legendry 🙏🙏❤❤💯💯😍😍
Thanks Bud 👊
Great video, as always, Pete. Talking about bringing stuff with you. You can put a roofbox with suction cup on the roof off the lotus if you want to do a road trip🤔😅. But maybe I the crazy one who would do that😂. Still would take the lotus because you don't see them a lot here in europa.
Great content. A comparison between the lotus and GT4 would be great.
Noted!
Great vid.Very well made. The answer here, I think, is to buy both.Use the Porsche every day and keep the Lotus for special occasions.
Perfect 👌
Cancelled my Emira after delay upon delay, reliability reports and general poor communication with the manufacturer. Boxster 4.0 seems to be more economical, holds it's value and has better reliability. Still think the Emira is a beautiful car but that's not everything. Cars on Autotrader now around £65k says to me that others think similarly.
Boxster, the string backed driving glove wearing drivers choice.
Porsche boxer, Caymen and 911 prices will fall faster in a few years than historically. Is the end of the line for those cars.
I run an '88 Lotus Excel and they were designed as daily cars. I know at least two people who ran them as company cars when new and one of them still has his. You could claim the same of the Elite/Eclat, but they don't have quite the same mechanical robustness of the Excel.
Love the sound of the Lotus! I’d be happy with either car.
👍
Your Boxster looks so much better with standard plates! Lovely car.
I think so too!
Great comparo, PP.
if you are looking for some cracking roads, the yorkshire wolds has some very good ones! amazing scenery also!
I was there on Tuesday with Jeep 👍
I don’t understand this Emira adoration. If i want a Lotus i want to have the raw experience of an Exige. Now thats heaven! The boxster/Cayman i choose as a comfy daily 😅
Great comparison video Pete… Let’s be honest, they’re both vehicle which you’d trade your missus for, but the Lotus you’d throw your daughter into the deal to get it! 😜 It’s just got that something super special about it that turns heads wherever you go and the performance to go with the looks 🤩
Well said 😂😂😂
Hi Ped
You did not disappoint with this video. Whilst I have owned two Lotus classics (Elite Super 95 & Bid Valve Twin Cam 7) and loved every minute on the road, I have to admit that given the choice today it would have to be Porsche, heart & head. Amusing aside to this Mrs P vowed for years that if I ever bought a Porsche she would divorce me.🤭 Not that I was looking for a divorce, but I bought a Porsche, divorce threat was withdrawn and I had to hide the keys.🤐
😂😂😂
Awesome video 👍
Thank you 👍
Both fantastic, if I could choose one it would be the porsche I think it's more sophisticated but do love the looks and sound of the lotus
Looked into buying an Emira but the many issues reported online put me off and and I ended up buying a V6 manual F-Type coupe, it's the best looking and sounding car at its price point.
I have a Cayman and must admit the Lotus looks fantastic, but if I had a 90 grand budget I would be looking for a low milage 992..Great review by the way..
Yep 👍
Love both of these cars they're both awesome
👍
Love the format. Well done Lotus.
Chapeau
Much appreciated 👍
There's a dark green one on my estate. Looks and sounds absolutely amazing. Stops me dead everytime. Something the boxter would never do. This is going to sound daft but for me , in a strange way, it's like a modern day ferrari Dino! Don't shoot me lol. A stunning car and I'd have one in a heartbeat.
I see that 👍
I had Elise’s in my 20’s but too much for me in my 40’s so got a 2.7 Boxster. Awesome thing. Here in Aus an Emira is 180k used a 981 GTS would be 140-150. I wouldn’t be able to go past that I don’t think. Definitely a Lotus heart; Porsche head decision tho. If money was no object I’d get the Emira cos it’s more unique . Plus we get a lot of sunshine here 😊 so I do like a convertible. Nice vid thanks.
As always a great video and comparison mate. Id like the Porsche for the usability and reliability. The Lotus for me wins on sound, but not on price.
Fair enough!
good review and comparison. probably better to go head to head Emira to Cayman. Thanks
I agree but I don’t own one of them 😜😂
Well done as always!
if you only have the space and the money for one car, then it's probably the Porsche. And even as a weekend fun and adventure second car, I would prefer the Porsche, because the "beautiful" sound of the Lotus can be quite annoying. If fun, design and performance are prioritized in this price range, then you should also take a look at the Corvette C8. Same price, more power, more sound and just better value for money
Very true!
If i had the funds id go with lotus. Currently saving up for a 981 cayman. Was surprised to see the newer 718s are around the same price as the older ones
Would love to drive either of them but Lotus takes it for me based on those stunning looks and the lovely engine note. I even like the colour (but I also like marmite!)
Good choice!
Traded my 07 exige s that i owned for a dozen years for a 2.5l cayman gts. Porsche is 85% as much fun to drive and 1000x more pleasant to live with. Miss the lotus but im too old to put up with one now.
Great vid… Boxster S flat 6 for me… 👍😊👊💥
Good choice!
The colour of that Lotus is very much like my first Elise which was in a colour called Norfolk mustard. I would not have your choice of colour because the yellow is a much safer, the green blends in too much with the background
Sorry that 4 cylinder in the Porsche sounds like a motor cycle. It looks good but it really needs the flat 6.
