People forget what sport sedans were originally about. They weren’t track weapons, they were liveable cars with a ton of performance. You’re not supposed to notice the difference because if you’re going fast enough that you need an M3s capabilities you’re losing your license. The reviewer says the M3 is more rewarding at 10/10ths. But this is a road review, I seriously doubt he got the car anywhere close to its limits. Taking delivery of a 2024 QV in a few weeks. Test drove the M3. I believe it when people say it would be faster than the Giulia on a track, although obviously I didn’t get to explore it at 10/10ths. But the big question is, how often are you able to track these cars? Every weekend? Maybe go M3. A few times a year or less? The Giulia is my pick. It’s a much more well rounded car, the ride isn’t punishing when in A or N mode. Even D is liveable. You’ve always got Race mode if you want a ton of fun. But you can’t really use it responsibly on public roads on a regular basis. And while the M3 is a better track car you also can’t use its capabilities on a regular basis. Tom Baker at Chasing Cars has a good comparison between the M3 and the Giulia and I think he gets it right. His take is also consistent with his view on the M550i as the actual modern successor to the M5. A liveable yet very fast and sporty sedan. You WANT a bit of roll in corners, this helps you feel the sensation of speed. If you’re flat you need to go ever faster to feel anything. That’s not what sport sedans should be about.
This. And it's 99% as good on track, without punishing your kidneys. MUCH better, advanced suspension design. BMW just makes their cars handle better by putting stiffer springs in.
Correct take. Track performance is irrelevant 100% actually. Because you can have fun at the track with pretty much anything. And a serious track day nut should buy something else rather than an M3 or Giulia

What I criticise on this BMW and also Mercedes and others, they’re so expensive and put basically only two tablets as screens in front of the driver with zero design. Alfa has nicely integrated the screen into the dashboard to maintain the old school sportive feeling. At least also Porsche does that. Also the front looks ugly with these huge “kidneys”. But of course the BMW is overall also a dream car. Of course Alfa’s infotainment system is outdated as it’s old. To me Alfa will always have a soul and will not just be car or a thing. 🍀
The M3’s ability to switch between AWD and RWD makes for a killer daily + fun car. Speaking as someone who lives in the alps and has snowy mountains during winter.
@@Bruno-xb2mt It's not that simple. I did daily an M2 for 2 years and it's a pretty good winter car with the right tires. But there's a big difference between a voluntary sunday snow blast and having to commute at 6 AM together with many others going up and down slopes hoping you don't have to take off from a full stop on an incline (ever tried that in an M2 on snow?). It's not impossible, but it's quite stressful. I appreciate my GR Yaris permanent all wheel drive that I have now that I live in a mountainous region.

@scherpebocht I can't believe how people could be so wrong. The Alfa is UNDENIABLY better looking. And it is a better driving car. Better steering, more advanced and compliant suspension. Considering how much older the Alfa is in comparison yet still managing to compete with the BMW in 2024 is a testament to the brilliance of Alfa engineers (skunkworks) under Fiat Chairman Sergio Marchionne all those years ago. However, the new M3 is fresher and it shows Alfa under the Stellantis group has the capability and resources to come up with an epic best-in-class successor and if so Chairman Tavares can use Ferrari engineers if he so chooses!

The m5 had a better interior and more tech and more space but if I were to buy one tomorrow it would be the alfa all day and I also had an f82 m4 comp immediately before the m5 which felt heavy and inert next to the QV
They still make the QV? What a handsdown gorgeous and timeless car. It wins just for timeless looks. Who buys cars anyways anymore with current prices... lease the BMW buy the Guilia and and park it and just stare at it.
@@hassanger8128yes because sales numbers means something is better 😂. The general public has no taste. It looks far better and is much more fun, engaging, and characterful.
@jjchockey Yes, sales figures means your product is good and people like and buy it. When sales figures are so low, it means that people don't like the product and it is a failed one. That's why Guilia GV is discontinued.
I would take the QV in a heart beat and I did !!. it's just one of those cars that are built once in a generation. It is a future classic and will be considered one of the greatest cars ever built in time to come.
Just a small correction: previous differential in QV wasn't electronically controlled LSD, it was a TV (torque vectoring) diff, whch by its nature has to be electronically controlled. Not only it was unpredictable (spinning inner wheel from time to time), it would also overheat on track, and it behaved like an open diff until 50 km/h (30 mp/h). Its great on paper, but software for it was a problem not performing as it should.
Had my Giulia for over 3 years now, and i still love it. I agree it's a 7 or 8 tenths of a car but if you don't do track day, that's fine. I've had 40 mpg on a long motorway run in it's most efficient mode and very comfortable too. Rare and great looking with lots of positive comments. I would consider the M3 touring next though.. Let's not forget the Alfa is now 8 years old and they are still in tests with much newer cars.
I think maybe reviews get super Salons wrong , the question they need to answer is can you put your entire family in the car and drive cross country and when everyone is asleep enjoy your drive. i don't want a stiff ride at 5 tenth cause that's normally where id be driving with the family, a super salon should have rounded edges it should not be track-capable or "Nurburgring" tested, I think ultimately that's why most people end up buying M5 or RS6 ,RS7 or the Giulia, basically I want a fast car that can comfortably carry the family, not race my thoughts any
That's perhaps a warm saloon like an S Audi but anything flagship (Ms, 63s, RSes) should be able to be driven at 10/10 without feeling like you're going to slide off the road.
@@wasdwasdwwasd that’s not how it used to be. The M cars used to be great daily drivers, and yet still you could get the 335i or 535i beneath them. These M cars are too stiff. If the M3 had a suspension setting that was 20-30% softer than the current softest setting that would do it. But I wonder if it’s even possible given the weight.
Why, if it's a super saloon it should also be track performance capable, that's what the "super" is for. If you don't need that performance then just go down a model and get an M340i or an M550i, they're way better looking, more comfortable, plenty fast enough in their own right and you save a fair chunk of money for the trouble.. Why do you want the sportiest version available from launch and then complain when you have to make more compromises?
By the “old” standards most of the mid range saloons are “super saloons”. You get 250bhp 2.0l petrol or diesel engines in basic specced models. 3.0l models are plenty quick enough for hauling your family and being quick enough to lose your license. The super saloon term evolved. You do not need them, you want or desire them. You can buy a house in parts of the UK for the m3 money. You don’t compare them to the m3s/m5s of old.
Love my Giulia QF. I'm sure technically the BMW is better, but for me there is no comparison. Aspired to get one for years & now I'm fortunate enough I could treat myself. If you have the opportunity don't hesitate. If I've had a bad day, I give it a bit of a blast on the way home & the world becomes good again.
Is it wrong that I want to buy all the QV's in existence and lock them in a garage for posterity ? I think as cars go electric it will be well remembered as possibly the greatest 4 door sport sedan of all time.
QV owner so I am possibly biased but also not an entirely fair comparison using a fully loaded (carbon brakes and seats) xdrive estate vs a standard QV saloon. The equivalent M3 may still win on paper anyhow but it would fail the “car park look back” test every time.
You can pick up the Giulia for £70k brand new right now, versus that spec Beemer will be nearer £90k with carbon seats & brakes. Not really a straight head-to-head.
Good review, but to clarify, it's a comfortably £90k car vs essentially a £70k car. The BMW is nice, but I'd take the M4 over the M3. However I couldn't walk away from an Alfa super saloon against either of the M cars.
I've stopped the video when I've heard the BMW has a better steering and front end compared to the Giulia. It's a complete and utter bs. I've driven both and handling wise, the Alfa is not a fraction, but miles better than the BMW, while BMW engine is superior at the top end. Automotive journalists, especially europeans, are on the germans payroll, all of them. They always downplay the pros of cars that are competing with the germans than 10 years later they come up with new videos of the same car calling it "an underrated gem", it's getting ridicolous frankly.
My choice is Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio on the looks alone and the V6 is just awesome add AKRAPOVIČ to it and it's just a symphony. Another great video James :)
I've owned an M5C, M2C as well as a Giulia and Stelvio QVs. I miss the Alfas way more than the M cars (currently have an M850i "fake M") If I was to pick between these choices, I'd pick the Giulia. there was just something special about ownining a Quadrifolgio whereas the M always felt like a slightly faster 5 series. If I was to rank them, it would be Giulia/Stelvio tied for #1, followed by M2C and then M5C.
No BMW owner would say a fake M car on the M850, which is faster and quicker than many super cars. I'm really tired of these fake comments who buy Alfa on TH-cam, whereas no one is buying Alfa in reality. That's why Alfa has discontinued most of its cars, and it is currently a broke and sad company.
@@hassanger8128 Thats why i put it in quotation marks because that's what others refer to it. My M850i actually has an E85 tune and makes more power than an M8.

It's unbelievable that the ride is so harsh on bad roads, even with all the technology that they have to tweak it. I was going to get a 2024 QV, but I love the tri-coat Competition Red so I'm keeping it. I've owned many AMGs, M-cars, and Ferraris, and the QV is my favorite period.
Design, character, sound, driving experience, the Giulia Quadrifoglio is on another level. The BMW M3 is great and very fast, but without a soul and too serious to be fun to drive.
Great review, thank you. I know all the reviewers talk about chassis when they mean suspension and you made the same mistake when talking about the M3 but they are two completely different things. Keep up the good work, great video.
The M3 hideous looks is enough to deter any weak hearted being. But put in the beautiful driving dynamics gorgeous looks and direct steering and the beautiful engine sound Alfa produces it’s an easy decision. M3 is just A car. Alfa is one of a life time generation beautiful Ferrari creation. A future classic for sure .
Cabin advantage for the M3? Are you for real? That disgusting lcd screen instead of proper dials? You are the reason cars are this fucked up now. Tighter body control, 99inch screen, 900hp, 3.5 tonnes....
Alfa looks beautiful inside and out, buttons and knobs brilliant, most of us want a quick but every day car, to much adjustment not necessary, a good car set up doesn’t need constant changes with buttons etc.
If new bmw wants to compete with 7 year old Alfa , thats the prof that giulia is Justin another level..maybe bmw is faster and more aggresive , but Giulia has stye and pure class.. driving plesure…
Steering ratio: Giulia - 11.8, M3 - 14.6... Not sure how that translates to same feel on the steering wheel, honestly. Maybe progressive steering is done differently, but the rack should not feel the same at all. German cars as a rule don't have an aggressive steering ratio
In 2020+ giulias they messed up the steering because many idiots complained about tire skipping in low speed maneuvers due to the very small ackermann angle. Overall Pre-2020 had much sharper steering.
Just by posting such a pathetic, childish, trolling comment like that, tells everyone who sees it, exactly who the chavvy, spivvy, oik wanker is. A car is just a car, and by labelling every person who drives a certain car as the same, you are being an absolute melon. I own a BMW M2, but I love the Alfa too. Because I'm a real petrolhead, and also an adult.
The Alfa is a real car that can be appreciated by real drivers wanting to have fun and enjoy themselves. The BMW is just a high tech computer on wheels. It is too stiff and needs 4 Wheel drive just to live with the Alfas handling characteristics. It may have good steering now but I am sure they have copied Alfa and it’s taken 7 years to catch up. Just imagine the price of the BMW with the Xdrive and the nice seats and all the available extras. I would take the Alfa any day as it is better looking, better in every way apart from the tech which does not bother me. I buy a car to drive not use as a mobile computer. It’s also less expensive and you get more value for money. I also like a car that you can look back at on your drive and enjoy the experience. If I did that with the front of the BMW I would feel sick. I also like to stand out from the crowd and not follow everyone like a sheep.
Giulias have proven to be more reliable than their german counterparts over the last 8 years, idk what has happened to the Germans but Porsche seems to be the only German manufacturer who can build a reliable car.
There is enough evidence to prove this statement false. E.g. the Giulia Quadrifoglio vs the F80 M3 (last gen) had lots of issues during that comparison. I had zero issues with my F80 M3 from 2017-2022 (could have went GQ but didn't) and recent new G80 M3 Competition for the past year and change.
Both these cars are incredible BUT the Alfa is the only one i`d choose because however good the BMW is i simply would not consider it because of how it looks...
I own M4 comp and one thing is certain... After I drove Giulia QV my car feels like an elephant. You can really feel it's weight and heavy steering. I don't know what changes were made to 2024 model that feeling was different
I have a 2024 M3 Competition. It's by far the best car I've ever owned. The car drives like a family sedan when you're just zipping around town. But make no mistake. The moment you get on the accelerator on a straight line or coming out of a corner you're immediately reminded that you're in a proper M car. There's nothing better for the money imo.
Why does the M3 need so many adjustable drive modes? Top much tech , just because. Once one sets a car up, one rarely changes it. I prefer more analogue. I will take the Alfa Romeo please (as all true car lovers would).
I don't want to spend half a day programming in the drive modes. I rather have expert Alfa engineer drivers to it as they can probably do it better than I. Maybe it would be fun to do that if I was a young techie.
These cars will appeal to different sorts of people, Alfa to those who buy with their hearts and BMW for those that buy with their heads. Me? I'd have the Alfa every day!
One of the biggest brands in the industry, aligned with Maserati and Ferrari, spending $500mln to develop a brand new performance car, 7 years before the latest M3 it’s being compared to, the Alfa Romeo is definitely better. I moved from a 159 Sportswagon Q4 to a F10 523i, and it’s no comparison, all in favour of the Alfa
ALFA-ROMEO GIULIA QV. This thing may have Alfa-Romeo badges, but really, it's a 4-door Ferrari. TheGiulia's development was helmed by a former chief technical engineer from Ferarri. The all new 2.9l twin turbo V6 510hp engine was the exact same copy as the twin turbo V8 from the Ferrari California T, minus the two cylinders. Carbon fiber was used for the hood, roof, driveshaft, seats, and more, but all the aluminum parts that were used for 85% of the car were done. Where? Ferarri's foundry. The active aerodynamics were tuned in at Ferarri's F1 wind tunnel. The chassis, suspension, and driveline were also developed by Ferarri. After knowing all of the ubove, which of the two cars are more special and unique?
Yes exactly- surprised the reviewer didn't call that out, instead of being suckered in by the fake raspberry noises. I mean, I can sit in my bath and make pretty convincing motorboat sounds but ultimately I'm just a sagging, balding old guy sitting in the tub going 'vroom vroom.'

Both cars are epic but I prefer Alfa.

@@FefyGT I hate the fact that i love the Alfa but at the same time i am convinced that an Alfa should be a little bit more affordable than high end BMW or Mercedes models. But this one isn´t. And thats why you don´t see them on the streets :/
Very true. Would be a shame if they felt similar.

Sounds like the perfect car for you.

@@Bruno-xb2mt It's not that simple. I did daily an M2 for 2 years and it's a pretty good winter car with the right tires.
That Alfa will make you fill with joy when you turnback and look at it after parking.
It looks much worse then the m3 and outdated 😂
QV owner so I am possibly biased but also not an entirely fair comparison using a fully loaded (carbon brakes and seats) xdrive estate vs a standard QV saloon. The equivalent M3 may still win on paper anyhow but it would fail the “car park look back” test every time.
You can pick up the Giulia for £70k brand new right now, versus that spec Beemer will be nearer £90k with carbon seats & brakes. Not really a straight head-to-head.
Ye it’s not a comparison the m3 is better in every way and it even looks better

I have to confess, before I prefer the Giulia all day... but this M3 touring OMG I can´t resist!!! It´s such a beautiful touring!
In 2020+ giulias they messed up the steering because many idiots complained about tire skipping in low speed maneuvers due to the very small ackermann angle. Overall Pre-2020 had much sharper steering.
