I love my 718 S I know it’s a flat 4 but I’m just happy to have a Porsche 😊 my last car was a V6 twin turbo developed by Cosworth ! Very special engine ! Miss that car 😢 I won’t be going EV at all !
Considering the price, it's even more amazing. At the end of this video, I even heard some sounds of greatness. It would be interesting to compare back to back this GTS 4.0 against a 981 GTS/S/base, because while these 4L cars are a baragin in their own right, they are still far too expensive for many, whereas the 981s are now accessible to the majority of the population, and represent by far the most moden Porsche true sports cars you can get for the money.
There is a 981 gts vs 718 gts comparison. The 981 sounds better and the S is more than enough performance. Pick one up for 34k, mint and fully loaded. Why pay 45k-50k for the 981 gts, or 60k for the 718 gts...u less you have money to burn
It's interesting to read people's differing opinions, and I see good arguments in favour of all options. It's also interesting to me that the two respondents so far prefer the 981 3.4 engine over the 718 4.0. I know several people with a base 2.7 981 Boxster who seem very happy indeed, despite being 50bhp down on the 3.4 S. Maybe it's because there are many more manual base cars, I'm not sure. But to me they don't seem particularly good value compared to an S. I guess the appeal of the GTS over the S, more than the extra 15bhp, is if you want the standard equipment that I assume would have been optional on an S, and whether you want bucket seats. For many people, I would think the additional 10k spend over the S would be worth it for the extra specialness and exclusivity that will probably always demand a significant premium, and maybe that premium with increase over the years. However, although the roof would be a real pain, I agree the 981 Spyder is a really good call for similar money to a 718 GTS 4.0. Personally, I'd opt for the standard 'comfort' seats, but as always YMMV.
@@nigel.w I test drove the 981 2.7, 3.4 and the gts 4.0. Budget aside, the 2.7 is definitely more rev happy, but you have to keep the revs high for performance, the torque is just too low on a small incline. The 3.4 S/gts, it's not a torque monster, but more than fine, particularly if it's just me in the car. The 981 gts made sense if you're buying new and wanted all options, they have held well, but at this point the command too much over a well equipped S. I wouldn't bother with sportschrono although u have it, pdam failures and you won't really use the sport plus button. The 4.0 is great, but I'd rather tune the 981S if out of warranty, you can get 350-360bhp as its a detuned base 911. In the uk the 4.0 has filters that deaden the sound
Blume has said ICE will run alongside EV on the Boxster platform. Might not be able to get them in the EU, but Porsche would be cutting off a substantial part of their US market. Nobody wanted the 4 cyl. Can you imagine how few will want an EV Boxster? Especially with the way the Taycan has faired on the used market? (BTW, I had a 4 cyl. and it was great.)
Great video 🤓!!! Last year in February 2023, I acquired my new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car! So far, I've only done 452 miles but hopefully a lot more this coming Summer! The PDK is also a lot of fun (it's definitely quick) 🤓 All the best and thanks again from Colorado! "Porsche...There is No Substitute!!!"
min6 onwards....Porfection!!! However the first 6min was very interesting, you are becoming a source of info anf knowledge on all Porsche's. Good work. 718s are great, you can drive them hard and rotate on their axis, unlike a 911, hard to push on sometimes, due it's traits, but still love those traits. Lee, maybe get more friendly with Porsche GB and get a few cars to 'test' drive (all models). You'd be much better than many other (YTers) as you know and appreciate the product.
@@Bmontepeque11 I'll respectfully disagree. I have had the chance to run a Gen 1 taycan turbo s on the track. It's a monster and gen 2 will be lighter and more capable and parity with the 911 will maybe one more generation away. And I have a 911 on order right now. I'm a gear head, but I see the writing in the wall.
Can't believe that a few years ago, we were all complaining about the boxter and cayman going 4 cylinder, now the next generation will be electric only, I can't believe any owner will swap out to an electric model.
Thanks to my awesome Porsche salesperson, I'm fortunate to have gone all in on my 2024 718 GTS 4.0 in November '23. Waiting any longer would have meant slim chances of seizing the opportunity to obtain a brand-new one.

Went to see the red T at Harbour yesterday. Lovely looking car and a perfect tonic to the everyday ease of an EV. Although not the gospel flat 6 still everything that a sports car should be…and still up for sale !
To me this is the greatest sports car ever made. The Mid-Engine platform is just better than the Rear-Engine one, it's straight physics. And with that engine, that size, that weight, that finesse in it's driving dynamics this is AWESOME. I am a simple man, as soon as a sports car becomes and EV it's completely out of my radar. But the Boxster that's coming will be the only time I'll give them a chance, like you said, if anyone can do it, it's Porsche.
Great video! As a 981 Cayman GTS owner currently I’m currently debating an upgrade to 718 GTS 4.0. But I’m not seeing the additional value of the 4.0 over the 3.4 particularly as the 981 is not muted by GPF & the sports exhaust sounds far better on the 981 IMHO. The interiors are almost identical & you can argue that the 3.4Litre with the PowerPack on the 981 GTS is sufficient power for this type of well balance fine handling sports car. Be great if you could compare the two back to back @9WERKS TV?
Thanks for the kind words on the video. I'd love to do a back-to-back comparison as I've been asked a few times on this now. Agreed I think the 981 GTS sounds better, in fact I think it's one of the best modern-sounding Porsche outside of GT product. I also think the 981 is a prettier car than 718…
Be great to do that 981 v 718 GTS comparison. I think the front end of the 981 GTS looks absolutely fantastic but I prefer the rear of the 718 car. Need to test drive the newer car & do the ‘man maths’ - dangerous pastime that!😂
@@pauldavies7251 Interesting, I’m currently in N Wales with my 981 & loving it. Not sure it’s worth what would be in excess of £25k to change up to from a 2014 car to a newer 718GTS!

People have started to discovers all the huge disadvantages with EV specially in in winter country like Norway with cold and long distances. It is no fun when a 3 hour drive turns into 5 hour drive because you need "refueling" and there is long waiting line to charge.
The next Boxster / Cayman may be electric, but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s the end, the electric world could completely fall on its face and make a u turn, bio fuels will be the next talking point of the automotive world

Electric Porsche Cayman / Boxer ruins the entire point of owning a Porsche... Prices on the Porches with real engines for sale is going to skyrocket, they are already crazy expencive here with 15 to 25 year old 911 being the least expensive ones for sale . Cayman and to some degree the Boxer is horrible expensive used here.
Maybe more countries need to leave the EU and then long live the ICE vs 4 wheeled electrical appliances. That 9A2 sounds as good as the 9A1 in my 987.2 Cayman S, long live Mezger Junior.
I think this decision won't last they will revert their decision, based purely on financials. The boxter/cayman saved porsche from going bust in the 90s, you will always have a certain class of buyers who dont care that its an ev but for the enthusiast they will just continue to buy older porsches driving up the price. This will hurt porsches bottom line. I think we might see this decision reverted in a few years once they realise the evs simply dont sell. look at the price of used taycans right now its through the floor.
I'm wondering how Porsche will continue their legacy of keeping the 911 as the top performing model with how fast in acceleration an EV is. How will a 911 Turbo S owner feel when a base 718 EV blows its doors off from a stop light? Maybe speed no longer matters? I know that I personally derive all of my pleasure from my 996 from rowing the gears and listening to the 3.4L singing out back, ultimately speed doesn't factor in at all... I guess it all goes back to the steak... a microwave can cook a steak in seconds but isn't one slow-cooked on a BBQ grille be a far better experience? Yes. Yes it would. Hard pass for me on EV appliances, Porsche badged or not.
You raise a key point. ICE cars will be the slowest vehicles on the road eventually. Who wants a slow Porsche or Ferrari? Ultimately I think that may spell the end of new ICE sports cars.
I look forward to 718 EV. If Porsche managed to make a 2.5t boat, which is a Taycan, to handle like a sports car, I wonder what they'll do with a dedicated sports car platform. As for the engine... Yeah, I love the 4.0 sound, but the sound or transmission are not the main reasons why I love 718 - it's the handling, the weight distribution, the magical suspension, giga precise steering. This is what makes Porsche a Porsche. My only concern with EV are the charging, range and battery degradation, maybe weight to some extent.
