My wife and I once picked up my grandparents to take them out to dinner. Grandpa sat in front and my wife sat in back with grandma so we could have our own convos. I started the car and checked for belts, as was my habit, and saw that grandpa didn’t have his on, so I sat and waited for him to put it on.
Grandpa (g): uh…we’re all in, we can go…
Me: just as soon as you put your seatbelt on.
    G: I don’t need one, let’s go.
Me: my car doesn’t move until all belts are on.
Back and forth a couple times, then grandpa looked me in the eye, held eye contact, and very deliberately reached over and shifted the car into reverse. I maintained eye contact, shifted back into park, and turned off the engine. Finally, my grandma, who was in back snickering with my wife over “our silly men” said “Louis, if he’s only HALF as stubborn as you, we’ll be here for another 2 hours. Put your seatbelt on, I’m hungry!!!”
He did, and we went off for a great meal.

I really can’t blame you for insisting your Grandpa put on his seatbelt. It’s such a simple thing that’s saved a lot of lives and possibly mine. Long story short a couple years ago just after Boxing Day I had been really unwell and hadn’t slept at all for two nights. I had to go out and get some more medication because I’d ran out.
On the way back heading towards home when I either totally lost concentration or I fell asleep at the wheel. I never saw that lamp post coming at all. So I slammed into that lamp post at roughly 30mph. I’m violently thrown forward, smacking my head hard into the steering wheel before the airbags deployed and the kind of rebound had my head hitting the airbag.
Mercifully I wasn’t seriously hurt. With the car filling with smoke from the airbag I undo my seatbelt, grab my handbag from the passenger seat, turn the ignition into the off position before stepping outside. I didn’t understand the smoke was just from the airbag and feared things might catch on fire if I’d have left the ignition on even though the engine was dead. I’d barely taken two steps away from the car before help arrived in the form of a middle aged couple who’d been walking nearby when I crashed. I immediately told them I’d hit my head and they put their arms around me (this was pre-pandemic) and safely go me to a safe place on the pavement then called for an ambulance while a nearby resident that had heard the crash arrived.
Before long they’d brought me a cushion to sit on then wrapped a warm blanket around me. The three of them cared for me and kept me conscious until the ambulance and police arrived. Even the fire brigade had to come because my car was leaking fluid all over one side of the road. Yet even more locals had come to help by coordinating traffic around the spill.
Now, the relevant bit. The lamp post had totally stoved in half of the front of the car and turned the front passenger side wheel and wheel housing into a crumpled and twisted mangled mess of mental, plastic and rubber. (As the passenger side had hit the lamp post instead of being in the centre.) In the end I got away with a minor concussion, whiplash and some bruising across my chest and shoulder from the seatbelt. While the crumple zones no doubt helped by absorbing some of the impact the police and paramedics both agreed that my wearing the seatbelt prevented much more serious injuries because the impact would have thrown me either headfirst into the windshield or I’d have been thrown half through it onto the bonnet.
Of course the other good reason is that in the UK it’s illegal to ride cars without seatbelts on and the driver is legally responsible for ensuring all passengers put their seatbelts on. My brother tried that once when I picked him up after a boozy night out. Fortunately when I asked him to put it on he happily complied.

@@stephanien6237 I had a woman cross the center line and hit me, head on. I had just filled the gas tank in a seven month old early '80s Toyota pickup. Wen I got in to leave the gas station, I put my seat belt on. I had an intense, burning pain as soon as I clicked the latch. It was so bad that I removed the belt to get out of the truck. The pain went away. Two minutes later I was hit, about a half mile away. My truck spun. I bent the steering column to the passenger side of the dash. The back of my head pushed out the rear window, and the seat brackets went through the back of the cab. This crushed the gas tank, leaving me sitting in a puddle of gasoline. I couldn't open either door, so I had to kick the passenger door open. I had barely made it out when a drugged up fool came running at me with a it flare. I had to punch him to get it from him and take it a safe distance.
When the police arrived one asked, "Where did they take the driver's body?" I told him that I was driving. He looked me in the eyes and said, "Someone was looking out over you. This is the kind of wreck where a seat belt would have cut you in half. I told him about everything, and once again he said "Someone was looking out over you." and pointed up.

I learned that a seat belt really makes a difference.
This accident happened when I was in 1st grade.
My family was on the way home after a day at the zoo. When a fender bender came up behind my Dads Atro Van and guided us into the back end of a ladies car who had pulled over to talk on her phone for something and was about to pull out.
I did not like seat belts as a kid, mainly the shoulder strap. Now my favorite seat was behind the front passenger next to the sliding door. Well being a kid, I was using my pillow like serving tray, the cap of a bottle as a tea cup and the water bottle as a tea pot. Roleplaying my own make believe tea party.
I was sitting with my knees facing the door when I went left cheek first into the front passenger's seat.
My lil sis and I got a chance to ride in an ambulance on the stretcher boards. I was over all physically fine, she was sitting in the back middle seat and this was before shoulder straps were the norm on middle seats. She needed to be checked. My mom had a look over and my dad was fine as well.
Since then, I have made sure to properly wear my seatbelt. That one accident has clicked inside me, every time I get into a vehicle rather driving or passenger, it's on correctly.

I remember the day I realised also, over 10 years go when many still didn't put them on, me including. So my sister in law was driving(winter time at night), we cross this bridge and while I was admiring the light of this factory a thought crossed my mind "I never been in a car accident", so I put the seat belt on and not even 2 min later in a curve we hit ice and she lost control of the car hitting a tree. The accident wasn't bad, but if I didn't had it on I will probably had hit the windshield also had to have a collar for over a month.
But unfortunately I actually do know a case in my city with some teens driving reckless at high speed at night... They hit a tree and the car caught on fire and everyone in the car died, but the only one that survived(barely) was the kid that didn't have the seat belt on and was thrown out of the car. Even knowing that I still will not go without one, cause chances of something like that happened are a lot less then when a seat belt is needed.

No bodies, but anything else was fair game including blood splatters, shattered windshields from where someone went through complete with blood and other things. She said after the class when they got into the car she put her seatbelt on and told my friend that daughter never wanted to be one of those people in the class. See i'm torn because seatbelts DON'T garuntee you're safe. of the 22,215 fatalities in 2019 only 47% of them weren't wearing seatbelts.
While SOME fatalaties can be prevented by using seatbelts those who do die there is very little difference if you are or are not wearing a seatbelt as you're just as likely to die with it on as without it.
Personally I think it's insane to fine people for not wearing it because it's your own personal choice, we need to stop protecting stupidity... let natural selection weed people out if you're unwilling to wear a seat belt then you should atleast be smart enough to avoid accidents which you would need one in. If you A) Choose to not wear it AND/OR B) are reckless enough to get into an accident you deserve whatever consequence is coming your way.
Also I don't wanna hear all this 'but you can't prevent accidents that's why they're accidents' yes, this is partially true, you can't predict that the semi next to you is going to flip over because of the wind while you're both going 80+ on the interstate but you can be proactive and NOT sit ontop of a semi while going 80+ on the interstate. Proactive driving will almost always save your life reactive driving will almost garuntee you wind up in an accident.
I live in an area where people simply don't know how to drive and I constantly have people running stop signs and red lights and if I wasn't paying attention I would have been hit. I was also almost hit by a semi which was knocked over by the wind on an interstate but because I have a rule that you only pass by semis when they are going insanely slow and always give them a 6 car min distance otherwise I was able to easily avoid that accident while the jaggoff in the red sports car who had been sitting right next to that semi for 20 minutes was crushed under it.
Having rules you follow to protect yourself is how you stay safe on the road not some flimsy piece of canvas and aluminum. Tools can only get you so far the best protection from accidents is your own brain power and if you can't manage that then i'm sorry you deserve to be in an accident. I have spent 20+ years on the road making cross country road trips and have never once been in an accident but i've seen hundreds of cars driving like they're the only one on the road get totalled 30 to 50 feet from me. The key here is: I'm not the only driver on that pavement and I drive like it. Humans need to be more attentive than we are and if you're not well ... accidents clear out the gene pool of that lack luster brain cell gene.

@@suruthebeast4065 That's like saying helmets don't save lives.
53% of fatalities were wearing seatbelts? Then they were dead no matter what.
Your question should be: Of the 47% who weren't wearing seatbelts, how many would have survived otherwise?
Also, most countries with seatbelt laws also have universal healthcare. If the taxpayer has to cover your medical bills, the government gets to minimise them through safety laws.

@@aaronleverton4221 Countries with seatbelt laws have universal healthcare? Really that's your argument? What about the US they have seatbelt laws and no universal healthcare.
You're absolutely delusional bud. You're living in a fantasy land where you can just say whatever you want and you're right but that's not the fact of the matter.
There are tons of countries with Universal Healtchare that don't have a seatbelt law and there are tons of countries without universal healtchare that do. Also
Now let's look at the effectivness of seatbelts in those who died:
In 2019 22k people died in automobile accidents, only 14k of them were wearing seatbelts making it only 47% of people who died in accidents were wearing seatbelts. Which maeans that seatbelts save only about 1/4th of the people who die each year approximately. I wish studies were done into how many of the other 3/4 of the deaths were actually caused by the seatbelt because i'm going to go out on a limb and say that number would probably be about 1/4 of the other half of those who died with em on.
So seatbelts have less than 50% success rate. So my argument still remains 100% valid while yours is based on personal opinion non cold hard facts.
Personally I do feel that people should wear seatbelts just because it is an added leeel of security because a larger portion of accidents are caused because people are distracted or down right stupid. This would be solved if we just removed seatbelts and let those were gonna die of stupidity just die. We have no need for em. But that's 'harsh' and 'problematic' even tough prior to the 16th century ish, if you weren't smart enough to save yourself you died. Didn't know a certain berry would kill you, there wasn't a law for that. Didn't know not to feed the bear, no law for that. Didn't know not to drink strange liquids ment for cleaning, no law for that. We've got so many laws defending bad decision making it's no wonder why so many stupid people exist.

"... *most* countries with seatbelt laws also have universal healthcare."
Read all of the words and understand what they mean in the sentence they are used in.
And that statement is not rebutted by saying "There are tons of countries with Universal Healtchare that don't have a seatbelt law..."
The latter has nothing to do with the former, nor does it disprove the reason I gave for UHC countries legislating seatbelt use.
You also don't know how to do statistics. The effectiveness of seatbelts in those who died is zero. They died. The seatbelt did not save them.
The only way seatbelts can save 1/4 of people who die every year is if they survive auto accidents while wearing seatbelts and then die later from causes unrelated to motoring.
The question was how many of the fatalities were preventable by seatbelt use.
And you flipped your numbers. First you said *only* 47% weren't wearing seatbelts, meaning the majority of fatalities were strapped in, then you said 47% were strapped in, meaning the majority of deaths were unsecured.
      Also, you say this:
"You're absolutely delusional bud. You're living in a fantasy land where *you can just say whatever you want and you're right but that's not the fact of the matter* ."
      and then you say this:

@@aaronleverton4221 My point is here you're acting like Seatbelt laws came about because of UHC guess what... US had em first... and to this day still doesn't have UHC. Seatbelt laws and UHC are not related is my point and the fact that you are using UHC as an argument for them is your grasping at straws to prove your point. These two things have NOTHING in common when it comes to why they exist. It's merely an argument people like you use because of (insert politically charged reason here).
What you're saying is like laws against murder being related to having a system of laws in general. The two things have come cross over but one doesn't exist because of the other. UHC existed well before Seatbelts and the overlap of the invention of the car and seat belts is about 100 years. Correlation is not causation.
It doesn't matter how you slice it seatbelts under ALL figures only sit at a marging a 5% from 50% effectiveness. They are NOT as useful as clowns like you make them out to be, they are a thin strip of fabric trying to restrain you from impacts capable of launching you out of the vehicle past glass built to withstand impacts. Personally i'd rather die than be strapped with months of hospitalization and then the following medical bill from broken ribs because at least in the former my suffering was quick (hopefully).
To answer your question about how many of the fatalties could have been stopped... i gave you that number probably about 47% of them... and that's being generous have you ever been on a crash site where people have died? It's not pretty, people die with and without seatbelts you've got a god on your side if you get out of a serious crash with only minor injuries, I saw a car flip over five or six times on an highway under the bridge I was on once, he and his family died, taking out 3 other cars causing 7 total fatalities and about 12 other injuries from those who only got fender benders stopping quickly on the road. The likely hood of you surviving such a crash is NOT on your seatbelt but rather on your luck, that's why it's about a 50/50 split... some people flipped heads, others flipped tails. Life is a gamble and they lost.

When I heard her unbuckling her seat belt I stopped, told her to stay buckled and buckled her again. We hadn´t made another 100 meters when I heard her belt come unbuckled again. In the rear view mirror I saw how she smiled to her brothers. I signaled to my wife to not be worried, checked the rear view mirror to make sure no other car was in sight and did an emergency braking. This sent her flying from her seat while the Volvo came to a screeching halt from approximately 30 mph. The backside of the passenger seat is well padded, so she didn´t experience any physical harm. When she scrambled up from behind the front seat crying I told her that THIS is what the belt prevents her from and that you never know when there will be a need for an emergency braking. I guess she learned her lesson that day because she never again argued about the seat belt.

The friend “borrowing” money story. I taught in US high school for decades. Variations on the following story happened every year. It happened to boys it happened to girls.
One of my homeroom students (female) started dating a guy in the same school. When they began dating she insisted on paying 50/50. He was fine with that. I gather she was working at a better paying job. Slowly he began asking her to pay for “more”. Then he would say he was short that week so could she pay for everything. She agreed but slowly was getting irked.
Then one day he asked her to skip the last couple of classes to drive him to the mall. She agreed. In the mall they went to a shoe store. New Air Jordan’s had just come out. The B/F had a friend, who worked in the Store, to hold a pair in his size. I should note this at the peak of Air Jordan mania & that the shoes cost well over $100.
So the B/F gets the Shoes & is incredibly happy. So the young couple go to check out. Clerk rings them up & asks…credit or cash. The B/F look at his G/F expectantly. It suddenly hit my student that he expects her to pay for the expensive shoes. The clerk again asks….cash or credit. My student walked out leaving him there. She knew he had a bus pass to get home.
Next day there was a slight buzz around school. She told her female friends what had happened & they were all peeved. He felt that, as his G/F, that she should have no problems buying him a gift. We’ll, they broke up. One of my coworkers was in Guidance. I suggested to her to call in my student as she needed support. No happy ending here. My student moved on with an unhappy life lesson.

Seat belts and airbags both hurt like hell in minor accidents that you probably wouldn't be too severely injured by, but save your life in major accidents. They always need to be worn. My uncle is one of those freak accidents where not wearing a seat belt is the only reason he's alive, and he doesn't wear them because it gives him way too much anxiety, but he still makes his kids wear them, because he understands that it's far more likely to save their lives than to kill them.
The only reason why not wearing one saved his life is because he and his friends were going 120+mph and collided with a tree, and he just happened to be lucky enough to go through the windshield and miss the tree while everyone else was either held in by their seat belts, or their bodies hit the tree/others in the car. He has severe permanent damage from the accident though. He is one of very, very few cases where not wearing a seat belt saved his life, but that is solely because of the speed they were going and what they hit that the impact of the seatbelt holding back others in the car made them sustain more damage than flying through the air a couple hundred feet. But in pretty much any other circumstances, he would be dead and those in seat belts would be alive.

I would climb over the fender of that '63 Catalina to stand beside the engine to change spark plugs or do other work. You could lay in the trunk, crosswise ant not touch either side.
I was knocked sideways by a Rainbow Bread truck one day. It shoved me two lanes to the left and into the curb, without damage. The paint job was only weeks old and didn't even have a scratch. It was in storage at my dad's house went I went into the US Army. (26T20)
My brother in law swiped the keys to my dad's garage, and to that car. He went hunting in id, with his dogs in the back seat and tore it up. Then he 'tuned it up' which it didn't need. The jackass replaced the distributor cap which was new, and got the plug wires out of order. The dumb ass drove it that way until it destroyed the engine a few hours later.
My family sent it to the junkyard before I got home and they didn't tell me.
If he had done this to my prized red 1966 GTO, I would have happily killed him. I had bought it with two rods knocking and a damaged crankshaft. I rebuilt the engine and shoehorned a Turbohydro 400 three speed automatic transmission into it to replace the two speed Powerglide. I had to have a custom driveshaft made. It was just 26 inches long. I modified the two speed shifter to work with it, but left the two speed indicator on the center console. It would scare the crap out of a passenger when it shifted the second time.
I worked in Electronics before serving. I had modified the rear deck for a pair of 6x9 speakers and made a new liner to cover them so it looked stock. I bought a newer Delco AM/FM stereo radio and parts to make it look stock in the car. I also found the OEM eight track but I needed some parts to repair it.
I had that car at Ft Rucker in the early '70s. I had a guy in my company with an early Z28, and all we heard was, "When I get my 'Z' out of the speed shop, I'm going to blow all your shit away!" He would laugh at my GTO because, "It takes an expert to soup up a car!" I easily beat him with only four cylinders, then he tried to give me the title. I told him that I didn't want a car that I had beat with half an engine. He sold it two days later for half of what he had spent on it. Never piss off an Engineer!
My brother in law was a real Mama's boy, and useless. He pretended to be a tough ass, but I was in the same grade as he was and I knew better.
I took down the Captain of out football team one day at the end of Gym class when I was in the tenth grade. Anyone on that team scared the shit out of him. The guy swung an army laundry bag full of his football gear at me. I grabbed it, swung in a full circle and hit him so hard that he slid almost 20 feet across the slick floor. Thee was on his back as I stomped over to him and yelled, "You better be glad that you didn't piss me off!" Then I slammed the bag down on his gut. I looked at the stunned teacher and about sixty boys and yelled, "OK, who is next?" The bell rang just then. I had almost sixty 'stooges' fighting to get out doors that opened in. 😁
When I did get home from Active Duty he had a new Corvette that he would park at the end of our walkway to our back door. I needed to park my GMC Handivan there after work so that I could carry my tools in. He constantly said, "Oh, I forgot!" I finally told him that I had a gallon of gelled paint stripper that I was going to spread over it, the next time that he 'forgot'. He yelled, "But it's a Corvette!" I replied, "It is just a piece of plastic crap." and walked away. Amazingly, he never 'forgot' after that. 😁

It’s against the wall on one side so the items on that side can be difficult to reach from the side customers use. If I squat down a bit to get under the sneeze guard with my arm better, I can reach ok while still keeping my head above the sneeze guard. One day, as I approached it, a worker was there and she ‘informed’ me that ‘it’s easier to reach the back if you lift the glass part.’ I said, ‘you mean the sneeze guard?’ She had a confused look on her face so I went on. ‘That’s suppose to help protect the food from people breathing/coughing/sneezing germs onto the salad bar.’ I know it’s okay for employees to move it as they take care of the food but customers shouldn’t be moving it. This was just a couple weeks ago, as we’ve had more sickness in our community. I hope she stopped telling customers they can lift that up.

During that entire seatbelt story, I thought the boys were little kids around 10-12 years old or something. To hear they were both in their 20s shocked me.

Same here. I was shocked when the OP drove off without them. But then later … oh yeah, that was the right thing to do.

I remember being on holiday with a buffet at a hotel, I went for some dessert and in front of me was a 8 to 10 year old kid by himself. He grabbed the spoon for the icecream tub and started scooping into his bowl but in between every scoop, he licked the ice cream off the spoon and put it back in. Uuuugh

If those jobs fell under the umbrella of keeping the house clean, then by her logic, shes not even owed more than $100 🤷‍♂️

We used to go to a buffet pretty regularly. One of the workers from the kitchen came out of a stall and went directly back to the kitchen without washing her hands. Disgusting. I wished I'd complained to management. Instead I just let it go and didn't eat there afterwards.

Story 2: I once stopped at a chain pizza place in a mall food court. What I saw in the back just disgusted me. There was this overweight, sweaty chef in a dirty white tank and uniform pants, with most of his arm, nearly to the armpit, in a huge vat full of what looked like spaghetti/ pizza sauce, stirring it with his hand. I've never been able to get that picture out of my head, and it's been at least 30 years. I moved on quickly.

No matter HOW small the issue, you ALWAYS have to stand up to Karens! They continue the behavior BECAUSE they know that people will let them get away with stuff BECAUSE "it isn't worth fighting over/causing a scene"
... it's the same reason parents need to be consistent with their kids and not give in because the kids will throw a fit otherwise.
Actually, if you think about it, those kids have probably grown up to be the Karens. STAND FIRM, PEOPLE!!

"They just wanted to know if you were home to say hello". Aaaah yes, because using the doorbell is too advanced for a 7yo kid

Had to install security cameras at several of my apartment buildings due issues at them. Funny thing is we knew what tenants were doing the stuff that was causing us these problems. So we install the cameras in the common areas making sure to not focus on any apartments specifically or in a way to be able to see inside apartments. And wouldn't you know the problem tenants were the only one to complain about the cameras saying they were violating their privacy and one even tried to get a attorney to write us a cease and desist letter by not telling him the truth. So we just sent the attorney a picture showing how each camera was set up and where it was aimed. And the tenant had to pay the attorney for nothing and the cameras stayed. Hand one problem tenant moved out shortly after we set up the cameras.

Nice! Having the problem tenant out was probably worth much more than the cost of the cameras.

When working out of State, I would always get early for the complementary breakfast. After 2 or 3 days of only being able to get coffee, I was awake and downstairs too early for breakfast to start, they asked me what I would like. I told them coffee, cereal and milk. From then on, I always had those ready or almost ready by the time I got down there. Love being a nice guy to the workers.

The seatbelt story gave me the same impression that the boys were kids, i was surprised too when they were in their 20s.

Last story is definitely a "why don't they ever call" moment
You'd think that after being away from their daughter for all that time they'd have changed, but instead OP's mother goes right back to berating them without skipping a beat. Glad at least OP laid down the truth on her before she hung up

I was torn by that but maybe she's right. Long ago Mum went through a bad spot when Dad died.I was 11, she was 32. Later moved 2 disaster boyfriends in turn into our house when we were teens & gave them the run of it. My sister is a stubborn cow and I still remember how Mum temporarily threw her out 16. Opened doors between the dining room & lounge. Mum: Sister do X for boyfriend. Sister: No. Closes door. Mum opens door. Mum: Sister you can leave. Sister: Fine. Family friends put her up. Those exact words & just 1 example. Mum grew up, profusely apologised & all's well for decades. But for a few years? Hell.

I loved the buffet story and have one of my own. I went to Tampa with two friends for a fun weekend at Busch Gardens. We went to a local Chinese buffet and there was a line forming at the sushi station as the freshly made sushi was brought out. I was second in line behind this woman who picked up the entire tray and took it to her table. About 20 people in line looked on and we're fuming. I turned and looked at them and smiled.
I walked over to her table and got sushi off of the tray that I wanted. She told me that I was incredibly rude! I said "and now you know how it feels when you took the whole tray to your table!". People that were in line behind me were in tears laughing and lined up behind me getting the sushi off the tray they wanted too. Several gave her a piece of their mind while they did it!
My friends who were sitting at our table watching the whole thing we're laughing so hard tears were streaming down their face. They said "We were wondering what you were going to do when she walked off with that whole tray. We thought you were going to walk over pick it up and take it back!". I said "You should never bring food back to the buffet that's been taken off, that's not sanitary. Besides, it was much better for her to have to face each and every person that she rudely denied as a teachable life lesson moment. Bet she will think twice about doing that again so I feel that I have done my good deed for the day!"
