Probably because too many people respond with, "I don't want to cause a fuss," and so they don't press charges.
I get, "I'm too tired to go to the police station right now. I don't have the energy or strength to actually pursue this, so I'm choosing to let it go." But the "I'm not worth it," argument is just making life worse for everyone down the road.
Press charges, when you can and when they are warranted. REAL consequences are the only way to teach these spoiled brats. And frequently, it's the only way that their children will learn BEFORE they grow up into clones of their entitled parents.

I have PTSD and know exactly what the woman in story two was going through, and just wanna say I’m really grateful that worker was there to comfort OP, by sitting nearby, cross legged, showing she wasn’t a threat, and soothing her how she could, and I cannot state just how amazing that was of her. Finding people that understand or are at least understanding enough is tough, especially when you’re having a PTSD attack, a lot of folk don’t understand that we can react violently because our trauma has been triggered and we go into flight or fight mode, where we can automatically go into fight mode and potentially be violent to protect ourselves, and that worker was understanding and helped out, and I’m just really grateful that OP had someone there who was understanding.

What should we *not* do if we see someone having a PTSD-related attack. I see what you say about not crowding them, but is there anything else we should know?

    • @adiarainfoster
      @adiarainfoster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

@@m3rrys0ngstr3ss keep your distance. keep your voice soft. Let them know that they are safe. Keep letting them know. Because they probably won't hear it for a while. Don't many any sudden movements. If the PTSD is related to abuse or a physical attack, sudden movements of the hands when seen from the corner of the eyes feels like an attack. don't loom over them. If you can, get down on their level, like sitting on the floor as the woman in the story did. And most of all, try not to judge. I can't tell you how many times I've had a PTSD episode and was mocked and told off for it by strangers around me. If it's just you and the person there, call an ambulance, because a PTSD episode can easily leave a person in shock afterwards. Don't try to force them to answer you. They aren't really there atm and won't understand, but once they seem more cognizant, ask them if there is anyone you can call. chances are they might have someone who is most comforting to them who can help them and calling for themselves can be tricky if they aren't very verbal at the time.
My particular PTSD is wrapped in and around my DID stemming from long term physical, emotional and sexual abuse as a child. As a result, when my PTSD triggers, it often also triggers an alter to come out. If the person is talking erratically, acts confused like they don't know what's going on, seems different than they did before the episode, there's a small chance that the person you are talking to is an "alter" (if they have DID like me). All the same things above apply, but if you happen to say know this person's name is "Sally" but the person during the episode tells you their name is "Annie," don't tell them they are wrong. They aren't crazy. It's just their mind setting up a defense against what was perceived as an attack. That's extremely simplified and there's far more in depth to that which you can look up if you are interested. Just, go with it. stay calm, stay relaxed, talk softly and just be a soothing presence until the person has returned to themselves.

I had CPTSD. I was lucky enough to find a therapist who specialized in emotional trauma. I'm much, much better now. I strongly recommend you do the same. PTSD is suffering, pure and simple, and no one should suffer like that. Getting therapy was the best decision I ever made. I don't drench the bed with sweat in my sleep anymore, I don't grind my teeth in my sleep any more, I haven't had a dissociative episode in four years! I still get triggered on occasion but it's way, way more managable and doesn't disrupt my life any more. Trust me, therapy will save your life. It saved mine.

Add to that that the new one was a man. it went south very fast. i asked him to please refer me to another therapist who is female. But he insisted that he didn't know any other therapists in the area. I live in a fairly small area. It's been something like 6 years and I've been unable to find a therapist willing to take me on. it doesn't help that a few years ago, more than 3000 people in my area had their disability cut off with no warning or explanation. My son is supporting me now and we can't afford a new therapist even if I could find one willing to take on both PTSD and DID in my area.

One thing I found is that my abusive partner made me feel like a fake. But I learned to see myself through other people's eyes. The guy I saw was nothing like my poor self image. I liked the guy I saw through my friend's eyes. He is the real me. There is a need, but an unjustified one.
We, as humans, developed a need only to stand out in positive ways, feeling embarrassment whenever we show our flaws and faults, which is actually an extreme example of what keeps most of us being Karens, as we feel embarrassed trying to be that entitled.
However, there is no need to hold onto that embarrassment when it is done in the correct way, though with PTSD, the embarrassment lingers as there is the added feeling of being damaged goods.
Karen is worse than despicable though, but I hope her therapy enlightened her enough.

The first story reminds me of a customer that would come into the office supply store that I worked at, he would throw the money on the counter, demand we take a case of water, and put it in his trunk. He would park in the fire lane with his trunk open. Then he would go about the rest of his shopping. Every other cashier would do it. I refused. When he came up to my register, I handed him back the money for the water. He looked perplexed. I explained to him that I am an employee and refuse to be talked to in a demanding, ungrateful, and abusive manner. I will help you if you treat me with the same respect that I give you. You need to start saying please and thank you. He stood there staring at me waiting for me to do it. I stood there not ringing up any of his purchases. I told him, I am waiting! He stammered out an apology and weakly said please. I agreed. I had expected my boss to fire me. He saw the whole exchange. When the customer left, the manager applauding my bravery and told me that he has a newfound respect for me. The next time the customer came in, he waited to ask for his water, said please, and asked how the cashier was doing. He even parked properly!

I'm short. I'm disabled. I often have to use the mobility scooters.
That all adds up to having to ask someone to help me reaching things at the grocery store on almost every visit.
Since Covid, the number of actual employees to ask at my favorite store has dwindled. I've never been shy of asking other customers, but I always go to the employees, first, if I can. And I ALWAYS ask nicely.
"Excuse me. I can't reach X. Would you please help me?" or "This is too heavy for me. Will you please help me get it into my cart?" And if they say no, I don't ask for a reason or argue or demand they help me, anyway. I shrug and look for someone else to help me."
Frankly, the only time I get "I can't. I don't work here," is when I'm asking where something is located, not "Will you please give the item I can't get myself?"
And you know what? On those rare occasions I run out of room in my cart, and I still need to get more... I get a second cart! I would never dream of asking, let alone demanding, that an employee, who is busy doing his job, drop everything (and probably get in trouble), just to carry something to the checkout for me. That is NOT his job. He could be written up for that!
That first story is far too common, and far too annoying. Good thing the manager evicted her.

Frightened the guy, "Does he not like people?" My cousin as he calms Moose down, "He likes people, he just hates mailmen." The guy's wife, "Honey, you're dressed like a mailman."
Stereotypical of dogs I know, but that's how the guy was dressed: pale blue shirt, kaki shorts, and a similar if not same style of hat for a US postal man.

We arranged for our living room carpet to be picked up for cleaning ..... had it all rolled up waiting for them ..... unfortunately they arrived in a brown truck. when they came into the living room, she stood on top of the rolled carpet and barking and growling ..... those two BIG guys slowly backed out of the living room ..... we had to put her in another room for them to get the rug. The funny thing was, when they brought the cleaned rug back, the same two guys, the arrived in a white truck and she wanted to lick'em to death with her tail wagging a mile a minute. "Excuse me. Maybe I get past, please?"
"Excuse me. I can't reach that. Will you get it down for me, please?"
"Excuse me. Where did you find that item?"
"Excuse me. I think you dropped this."
Not the words. Even asking for help is OK. Even though nowadays I'm usually the one asking, there are still times when I am in a position to help someone else, and I like helping other people.
But, "Excuuuuuuuuse me," like they're "being polite," when they are just about to be incredibly rude, even if you ARE an employee," is irritating as all get out.
I think you can usually tell from the tone, initially, but sometimes, they get the tone right for those two words, or even the next sentence, and don't change into wailing banshees until you fail to perfectly please them in every way.

The story with the Karen and the water in the grocery store reminded me of something that happened to me. I was in Walmart, grocery shopping, and was in an isle and a older gentleman was trying to lift a heavy bottle, I of course offered my help and he was very appreciative. I told him to mention to the cashier he would need help getting it into his vehicle. Which he also thanked me for. I then heard the dreaded 'excuse me ' but when I turned it was a very sweet elderly woman and asked if I could possibly reach the item she wanted that was on a high shelf. She was all of 5 feet tall and I am almost 6 feet tall. I happily got her item, she thanked me and then I heard those words again and this time it was, Karen. She was the typical Karen, demanding, rude and outright entitled. She wanted me to get an item for her. I knew what she wanted and where it was, but I didn't tell her that. I told her I would go check with my manager to find out where exactly it was and for her to wait there and I'd be right back. I turned the corner finished my shopping and left (being careful not to be seen by her). The elderly lady I did help saw me at the checkouts, said she had enjoyed how I handled the 'rude lady' and that she was still standing there after 15 minutes. We both laughed, she thanked me again and we went on with our day. I wondered how long she actually waited? She might still be there 🤣

Story 1: Sadly, if the Karen was buying that much groceries, then yes, she likely had a family. I feel sorry for them, more so if they see her behavior as acceptable and turn out just like her.
Story 2: I feel very sorry for the OP; PTSD is NOT something you fully get over, as I know from firsthand experience. And you're right, you NEVER put your hands on people if they don't want it. If OP had any form of self-defense training due to her experience, the Karen could have been in a lot worse trouble.
Story 3: I think she was genuinely sorry for her actions, but I don't think it'll be enough to stop her from acting that way. You've had a few stories where the Karen berates someone not realizing that not only were they who she expected, but they were also a police officer. He was more than gracious with her.
I have to say, some of your best videos are ones where your last story ends on a nice note.

I empathise with these people as they are probably in a bad spot and just want a touch of compassion in their life, to hear "you're right," or those who are drowning in uncertainty and cling to the one potentially helpful person they find...

Yes, you _never_ lay your hands on another person, but it sounded like she really learned something, and after all, if there was no real injury, and it sounded like there wasn't, then an arrest would only be to teach a lesson, so the officer's actions accomplished this without a ton of paperwork.

Hey abd welcome to the "Fluffiest Army ever!" ^^
Gosh how I really needed a fluffy pillow .....
Still can't decide to hug it or punch it to vent all the stress though.....
I guess I would even feel worse for punching an innocent pillow, so I'd probably just hug it and cry.
Nerves. Anxietx, Panic attacks, slowly developing social anxiety, etc, etc, etc...
I need an emergency dentist appointment .....
I'd prefer to swim with sharks, in a glass pool, on a cliff, 400 feet above ground.

Just something nice I wanted to post, had to make a run to Walmart after I got off work today to grab some milk. As I was looking for a line to check out, saw a woman in a wheelchair trying to get some water bottles out of those coolers next to the checkout, and held it open for her. After I got into a line, she got into line after me, and I helped her get her things out of the cart and onto the conveyor. I then helped helped her get her groceries outside as she waited for her friend to come pick her up. Had a nice conversation with the woman while waiting in line.

What OP in Story 2 should have done was sue that Karen. She literally got away with it in my view because her record got cleared. OP could have also avoided being placed on the stand to give testimony because the evidence and conviction were there, plus her own counselling could have gotten her excused due to traumatic reasons. If the Karen or her lawyer tried to force the issue, the judge's back would be up immediately because it was Karen's behavior that caused the lawsuit.

I mean i've been beaten so badly the police were stunned, if you grab me like that i lose all presence of mind and will instantly assume violence against me. • @Nempo13
    @Nempo13 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've reacted rather violently toward a karen that grabbed my arm demanding assistance, so the story.
I was in a Home Depot of all places, wearing a red shirt and black pants, clearly not what an employee would wear. I helped an older gentleman reach something from an upper shelf, and as he was doing some replumbing and that is one of my jobs, I helped him grab the right stuff he would need.
Just a simple act of kindness, and go on my way right?
Unfortunately, man plans and fate laughs.
I see the older man off and go back to selecting what I need and hear that extremely entitled and self important, "tch, hello? Shouldn't you be looking to help another customer? What are you doing, I need help finding this so come here and get it for me."
I look at her with an eyebrow raised, seeing her look right at me. I shrugged and said simply. "I don't work here lady." Grabbed what I needed, as thankfully I found it quickly enough, and turned to go find the rest of the things I would need.
This woman walked after me and said something along the lines of "They always hire lazy people. Hey you I said you have to help me!" She got right behind me after saying that and grabbed my arm and pulled hard to spin me.
Now, I am not a small guy, I am 6'2 and this woman was maybe 5'5. I have to work in some shady areas from time to time as security or in my other job as a plumber. Raw instinct kicked in as this woman grabbed my arm and yanked to spin me. I spun and my hand immediately went to her throat and pushed her back against the rack quickly and efficiently. She screeched and I let go once I saw it was just some entitled woman and turned to walk toward the nearest counter with an employee as I knew what was coming. She hammed it up, holding her throat and coughing forcefully and in a clearly fake manner. This woman was crying fake tears, after all...if she was actually crying her mascara would have ran, and trying to get as much sympathy as she could and drawing a crowd.
Meanwhile I was on the phone with police already to get an officer on scene and when I reached the help desk asked to see a manager or their loss prevention people as I'll need some footage brought up for an officer already on the way.
Before the officer showed up she eventually makes her way up front in the store and goes into full harpy mode at me. How dare I attack someone, I am so fired, by now everyone knows the rants. I ignore her, which infuriates her even more as I don't respond one bit and continue to talk to loss prevention. Then, something happens that makes one wonder just how dumb can someone be, as she grabs me again! I turn, grab her wrist, and squeeze to force her tendons to release my arm in a very painful way. The woman screeches in pain again and snatches her arm back after I let her go with a very low "I told you, do not touch me."
It is right at this moment the officer and his partner walk in, a male and female officer. They pull the woman away and the female officer talks to the woman to get her to calm down and tell her side while the male officer stands with me to get my side of the story. Now, the woman spun this tale of me being a completely rude individual, cussing up a storm and threatening her repeatedly. I told what happened and had the loss prevention guy show the video.
The woman went on a tirade for quite awhile. I leaned against the counter and talked tot he loss prevention guy and the officer about security related things. Eventually she finally stopped, so sure of her story that when the police stepped aside to talk to one another she smiled smugly at me.
When the officers came back and asked if I wanted to press charges against her, her jaw about hit the floor and she half yelled half screeched at how dare they allow the victim to be blamed. This time the female officer cut her off and old her bluntly that they saw the video and grabbing someone constitutes assault, and that my actions immediately after are allowed by law. She even explained the woman was lucky that I showed restraint as I could have seriously injured her and been well within my self defense rights.
Yes, I pressed charges. Due to her yelling and screeching and reaching out at me in anger again, I had the joy of watching her get led away in handcuffs even. This woman was put on years of parole and now absolutely anyone can threaten her with a call to the police if she starts yelling or screeching in a store. She's forced to act like a normal human being now.
This could have easily went the other way if I had responded to her at all, or didn't immediately call the police myself. Even without retaliation, immediately get away and involve authorities. Always press charges if available. The only way karens ever change is when forced to.

A friend of mine encountered once kind of a male Karen, but a very mild case, thankfully.
He is a craftsman, in a hardware store still in work gear, looking for some stuff for himself, minding his own business. A man approached him, leather slippers, poloshirt, sunglasses, the whole "rich guy "cliche with a : "Hey, you can help me. i have some questions" and startet to drown my friend in how to do this and that.
He didnt ask if my friend had time or would be even willing to help him and it was plain to see that my friend was not an employee, just a customer, but a craftsmen- so just in handy.. this guy attitude was incredibly arrogant ( he just lacked the obvious finger snap and the "heel"), but my friend wont take any bullshit from anyone, has a bit of a mischiveous streak and a great pokerface: he stayed friendly "Of course, Sir" and answered all questions with a straight and honest face while telling complete nonsense!
Good luck with following these advice...
I do really wonder what is wrong with people like that. Not just to touch, but to violently grab a person, especially unknown and from behind is incredibly agressive and oversteps any boundaries in social human interaction.
I never encountered physical abuse, but even without PTSD the chance is high that i would react on instinct in a situation like this, and an ellbow or punch in the face of the attacker could be a real possibility.
And what an absolute Nightmare for people whose actually suffering from PTSD

Lady with PTSD just being able to tell these stories shows how much work you’ve done and far you have come from your initial attack and I’m happy you have been able to heal some(I know it never goes away but I believe you can and will get to a point where you don’t have flashbacks so severe like this because you are clearly putting in the work and have a good support system). I don’t know what happened but I have an idea of what might’ve happened and I’m sorry to happen but I’m glad you survived and you’re doing so well today. It probably doesn’t matter but I am proud of you and appreciate you telling this story bc it will help Others who have had a bad incident for lack of a better word like you have in the past but maybe haven’t had his good luck with counseling or haven’t been able to get counseling to know that there is hope that it will get better at least to some degree.

As punishment, all Karens & Darens need to be forced to wear shock collars & work 3 months in retail, 3 months in hospitality - unpaid. Each time they fail to smile, mutter under their breath or complain in any way, they get zapped & an extra week of unpaid community service gets added to their sentence.

As for the story with the officer, i think it may be a bit of both. She seemed to be genuinely afraid of being arrested once she knew OP was an officer an could very well arrest her for what she did. I think that put some fear into her and she may be at least partly saying it to get out of legal consequences. However, i do sincerely hope that OP's lenience and the lesson will make her think twice about who she assumes is what and how to treat people. Same with the karen in the story before that one- I hope that the court mandated therapy will help her look at herself and how she treats people. Though we chuckle and groan at these stories, "Remember the human" applies to entitled people as much as their victims.
