Rescuing a flying-fox in the gutter; this is Elijah

- Elijah is an adult male Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who ended up in the gutter beside a very busy road; he's most likely glanced off a car or had his flight destabilised by the slipstream of a passing car, and crash landed. As would be expected, any bat flying headfirst in the dark, navigating by sight, any accident will invariably involve hitting it's head somewhere during the event.
I didn't expect the little guy to survive, given his presentation, however I had to give him a chance to see how he would go after fluids and analgesia.
I was going to transfer him to another carer when she collected Burton, however Elijah was so unwell when she arrived I kept him.
He died a few hours later.
RIP little guy; I wish there was something more I could have done for you.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
Here’s Jenny’s email.

Meg, you did everything you could. Poor little love didn't die cold and alone. You eased his passing ❤. Fly free sweetheart.
Poor little mite. I'm glad he had your kind care in his last hours. Thank you. 💕🦇🇨🇦
Poor little Elijah. At least he died knowing care & comfort. RIP little one.
No more could be asked or given. Comfort and protection.
He tried his best to stay alive. Go dream of the freshest fruits now.
Roads and cars are so tough on wildlife, breaks my heart. Thanks for giving him loving hospice care.
As always Meg, this is o sad. RIP Elijah, but his last moments were in your loving hands. Thank you for taking care of such a handsome boy.
I'm glad he could pass in a place of caring, rather than having to die on the side of a street.
Every bat has an individual personality. Poor Elijah. 😭
A bad ending for this jewel! Meg, you came and rescued him but unfortunately his issue was not so easy!! Rip Elijah, you' re so gorgeous!!
Oh poor precious little man Elijah!🩶🦇😓💔 Meg you ALWAYS do everything to make the Bats feel comfortable and well taken care of.Thank you for your kindness.💓
Thank You for caring for Elijah Meg 🤗 XXXX
RIPLittle Elijah. I'm glad we got to know you before you left us.🥲😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
Poor little guy 😢😢😢 at least he didn't go on the road, you helped him as much as you could ❤❤❤
He had some great Meg care, so sad as we need all of them 😢 🇨🇦🦇🍁
You did so much for little Elijah. You gave him warmth, love, and pain relief to get him though is last hours, which were peaceful. Thanks Meg for all you do.
Oh poor Elijah 😢😢😢😢 at least he didn’t get tortured by birds or harassed by other animals, and he got some comfort in his last hours. You take such good care of all of them. 💕🦇💕🦇💕
RIP sweet little Elijah. Thanks Meg for your kindness to him.
RIP Elijah 🙏😔
RIP Elijah. Thank you Meg! You gave him comfort and peace.
Poor little guy
Elijah, when first rescued, reminded me of Tom Waits : )
And Meg's"𝘏𝘮𝘮𝘮𝘮..?", a conversation filled with love, gentle curiosity, questioning and knowing, all at the same time ♡
poor Elijah, even in Meg's loving and capable hands couldn't prevent his passing. I think I need to watch some baby bat videos.
I can't undo what has happened before I arrive or the injury suffered; a human would have a paramedic, drugs, emergency doctors, CT scans, MRIs, an emergency team and neurosurgeon.
This isn't something I can access and his brain is tiny; nobody would be able to operate anyway.
Baby bat vids are always fun and uplifting.
Absolutely! That's what I do too. Helps dry up the sad tears.
He's beautiful
Poor guy. He was one of the most unwell-looking I can recall seeing for awhile. Thank you for keeping him warm and safe in the hours he had left.
Thankyou Meg for helping this poor one. I hope he had a good life.
Poor fella. Thanks for caring for him, Meg.
RIP darlin boy....😢😢😢❤❤❤
Poor baby 😭 first seeing him in the gutter and then how listless he was.. RIP Elijah, 💔🌈
Poor little fella. At least he was comfortable and was with someone who cares at the end.
Poor little Elijah, rest in peace! You had such a cute Ewok-y face! 🙂
RIP Elijah💕🦇
Poor little guy. At least he passed away while safe, warm, and relatively hydrated and pain-free. Thank you Meg.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤sleep well and I hope you will fly forever in paradise..
Poor little fellow.....
R.I.P gorgeous sweetie.
Poor little guy, at least he didn’t die thirsty and hurting in the exposed gutter. Even with all their astonishing adaptations, they didn’t evolve with cars whizzing past at crazy speeds and unforgiving surfaces.
I rescued a little one yesterday (about 6 months old), who was in a park and smacked his head into something, hard. He also ended up in the lilypond and half drowned.
It's not just human obstacles which are an issue; they have accidents in the wild too.
In FN Queensland, there is a native cane called "wait a while" or lawyer cane. It has the nastiest of barbs and batties frequently get snagged on it; it's almost worse than barbed wire, in that it's a native hazard.
@@Megabattie : That “wait a while” / “lawyer” cane sounds like a nightmare, both for walking and for flying folk. The US desert Southwest has “jumping cholla,” a cactus with sharp hooked spines that is infamous for easily breaking off from the parent plant and hitching a ride on furry animals or cloth-wearing people. They can’t actually jump onto you, but it can seem like it.
It boggles, what disasters and dangers these bats have evolved to survive often enough to raise the next generation.
@@catherinehubbard1167 LOL I must call the next octopus baby Jumping Cholla
@@Megabattie : oh, perfect! I’m proud to have contributed a mite to your naming superpower.
BTW, Note that cholla is a Spanish word, so the double L sounds like a Y. So it’s as if it were “Cho-ya.” A rather pretty name for a lively little girl bat.
You made a difference for him.
That's all that counts.
Thank you ❤️🕯️
Hi koppsr
Welcome to Megabattie,
I put lots of information in the descriptions under the videos - so if you have questions, look for the answers there first. I also put the fate of the animal if I know it, at the time I put the video up. I may put updates there later if I find out what happened to the animal after it has left my care.
There is also a Happy Outcomes playlist if you want to only watch videos where the bat survives; this is a real life channel and you get the good, the bad, the ugly and distressing, and even my oopsies.
You can find further videos on an individual bat by searching in the YT search bar for Megabattie/and the name of the bat you want to follow.
There is a community tab (like a mini Facebook page) on my channel - if you go to Megabattie home page, there is a menu bar across the top under the cover pic. Home, Videos, Playlists, Community, About. If you click on the community tab there are posts there where I can share pix and talk about some of the videos I put up and answer questions.
❤🎉😢
bless u
Awww, he really didn’t look at all well right from the start. Whenever I see that vacant look, and no attempt at all to avoid or get away it really doesn’t bode well. He looked more than halfway to the other side of the river when you got to him. I’m glad you were able to get him out of the gutter, give him pain relief, and some warmth. The side of a road is no place for a bat to end his days. I think the combination of pain relief, quiet, and warm darkness enabled him to let go. He was a fairly small adult…🌹🖤🇨🇦
No, he was never a survivor but you have to at least try.
@@Megabattie True, if we don’t try…we will never know if we might have provided some special chance.🖤🇨🇦
Thank you for giving him some relief.
Sad
Update 4/13- 11:30 am eastern time! We are getting closer to the reserve! 175 views 11 bids. Way to go....we need all our Megabattie viewers to push this as hard as we can! Love to you all! 😇❤️🖤🦇🖤❤️
Some times god needs a extra bat to carry his messages for him. It was just his time to go be God's messenger.
Aww what a lovely sentiment it made me tear up.
Thank you. It's a beautiful way to think of his transition. 💕
Thank you, Meg. He had your care at the end. Were those white things on him maggots, or some other insect, or just lint ? I’m sorry he didn’t make it. 🤍💙
Lint, fluff, leaf debris...
RIP most precious Elijah.
