In Mandi's aviary: Gelert gets into a snit when Cinders used his sling.

- I've got a lovely video from Mandi for you today: Gelert got himself into Walter-worthy snit at Cinders, who dared to occupy his own personal favourite sling. He screamed and huffed around, then went and licked her fur and feet to annoy her into letting go in the sling, where he could push her out. She left him to his snit, whereupon he proceeded to stink up the sling to reaffirm his ownership, and went around scent marking the ropes and everything he could to remind himself and everyone else, just who was boss in the aviary.
I've added a few things which some of you will have seen before, knowing that not everyone watches daily so the footage will be new to some of you.

That was a right royal snit. I'm seriously impressed, which of course was the whole idea.
Walter would be so proud…and Gelert always has good reason for his temper. Cinders just likes to wind him up now and then I think, it keeps the spice in their BFF relationship. Teddy is always ready for a civilised breakfast companion. Copernicus has the best of both worlds. Love the scary fruit bucket, and the ring of little bat Witches around their red cauldron. He channels Walter (the Professor of Grump) extremely well. Walter threw the most amazing (and loud) temper tantrums over nothing; Gelert has learned from the best.

Gelert has two licking moods: one to torment Cinders and one that makes him appear to be joyfully riding a bicycle. Gelert does do a very good imitation of Walter, but he's probably coming into Gelert's dreams giving him pointers of how to properly maintain the rage. Everyone else is happily stuffing their faces and being drama free.

I guess friendships don't matter if favourite slings or chairs are used (even in the human species). I too used to get the eye whenever dad found me in his recliner. He lurking over my shoulder and me scrambling out.... good memories.
I have MY chair; nobody sits on MY chair. My bum has created a Meg bum indentation and anyone even looking at my chair gets given THE EYE.

Gelert thinks he needs to be a badder ass than Walter; he just needs to be himself with a bit of compassion, but he's busy channeling the Professor of Grump himself, the inestimable and one an only Walter.
They don't have slings to lie on in nature - but have evolved a way of incorporating it into their lifestyle - with ownership marking.

It appears that Gelert is using his thumbs way more than his toes for holding on, is he plagued by arthritis or so?
Meg will give the correct answer, but I think he's got something the matter with his leg because his bones break easily. I don't think he's technically an old guy, but he's with them because he's more fragile.
Gelert was born with metabolic bone disease, probably secondary to maternal malnutrition. He was raised by Mandi in care. He can't use one leg at all and it's tucked up to his belly; he has arthritis and fragile bones.
He's in with the old dudes because his bones are fragile and if he falls he wouldn't be fixable.

@@tinawitte420 Where he is means any fall he may have would end up in the sling under the old dudes in their aviary. THeir aviary is designed for them to be up high with the other batties (it's a dominance thing), but where they can't fall to the ground or hut themselves.

So I'm wondering about territorialism in a wild bat colony. Does each bat (or some of them, at least) have its own special place to roost? Do they hang around in smaller groups within the larger colony, maybe claiming a certain tree or roosting area for the members of that group? Or is it just a sort of wild free for all or a kind of first come/first serve situation?
THere are permanent colonies, and transient colonies; there are permanent residents in permanent colonies, and transient residents in permanent colonies.
We know that some boys stake out the same branch year after year - their wooing branch. There was a boy they called Mr Badge, because he had a white patch on his chest which made him quite identifiable, and he hung out on the same branch every year and enticed girls onto his boudoir branch for nefarious purposes.

Cinders had a bad first birth and was quite damaged; she had a hysterectomy. She's never had a live baby. That was a long time ago - maybe 15 years ago.
I just love how Mandi finds Gilberts tickle spot and he acts like he absolutely loves it, he loves a good bum, scratching! I find these fascinating. I’m watching him rope with his scent. That is so cool! These just make my day. Watching them smack on fruit is so satisfying. They are so cute. Just curious I don’t know if I’ve ever heard you say, how old are they when they start mating and do they start that before they leave the aviary? 💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇
Gelert's tickle spot is wherever he choose it to be; pretty much everywhere. He love bum scratches.
They start play mating right from 3-6 month out in the wild because it's mating season again and all the boys are doing it around them.
IN care they will play mate and wrestle but not a lot because they're more interested learning to live like a batty with batty mates.
In Mandi's aviary they are a little more precocious because they're seeing the behaviour around them all the time.

Is it Poppy or Copernicus who is the brains behind the nocturnal outings?
Remember that the bat don't have hands, so licking is one way they can convey affection; they also lick salt off her skin.
Poppy and Copernicus are an inseparable duo for nighttime mayhem.
