Juvenile flying-fox in care: Pelican excels at the non-cooperation game

- Pelican is a dainty looking juvenile female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who isn't actually trying to turn me into confetti anymore, and is obviously feeling better and starting to eat, however whilst she appears completely benign, she's not particularly cooperative in a very squirmy and stickybeaky way.
For your delight and viewing pleasure I video my prolonged attempt at wrangling an uncooperative octopus/pelican, who doesn't want a dressing put on her thumb and exposed claw bone.
I don't know who won if you score the encounter on style and technical points. I can say that there can never be too many grapes employed during this wrangling match; if in doubt, stuff face with grapes - yours or the bat's. (for the human, I suggest taking liberal mouthfuls of fruit of the vine in bubbles form as a preloading dose before commencing).
And remember; to wrangle an octopus you must BE an octopus; profound words.
Pelican is doing so well she'll go to the carer tomorrow and I'll organise an xray when Adrian's next on; she's perfectly capable of eating for herself she just needs me to go away and not watch her; she'll do well in the inside aviary with some buddies.
Ya gotta love a survivor who can out-wrangle a Megabattie!
It looks like it's time for her to go to to hang out with the other batties if she's OK in the morning and hanging well.
She continues to be little Miss Bright Eyes, using them to good effect to try to fool me into thinking she's not casing out the joint with the view to escape if I ever turn my back on her...
Gotta love a survivor with feist and battitude.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.

Pelican't cooperate
😂
Peli-can but Pelic-wont because she doesn't have to...
😂😂😂😂
👍 Good one!😂
@@tracyjacoby2382 Haha
To be fair, if I'd had my thumbnail torn off I wouldn't be too enthused about someone messing with it either! She doesn't seem to be afraid of you any more, just doesn't see any reason to cooperate, especially with the grapes coming.
I'm always impressed by the flexibility of those legs. If we had legs like that we could scratch our noses and between our shoulder blades. We wouldn't be able to stand or walk, but you can't have everything.
LOL yes their legs are as flexible and useful as we find our arms.
100 out of 10 Meg for" keeping calm and carrying on" .😊
That thumb must have been so sore.
"Unhand me giant pink monster" but for some reason no screaming.
I truly believe without you Meg she may not have made it…… underweight and claw injuries to her thumbs. Poor baby. She’s a beautiful little batty!
Fingers crossed that she continues to grow in size, confidence and will to survive!
You’re the best ❤️
👍I totally agree! Without Meg's excellent medical treatment and compassionate ways, Pelican may not have made it, I pray she has.🩶🦇💕💕
What Meg says: "There is no flying in here. No flying".
What the bat hears: (The orchestra comes up. Maureen McGovern sings) "You can fly! You belong to the sky! You and I, we belong to each other."
She doesn' t cooperate but she's an adorable girl!!!
She's a funny girl, and her head is in the food bucket whenever anyone goes into the cage.
@@Megabattie,
She’s at an aviary, now?
You are SO patient!! I love watching Pelican eat - she is very enthusiastic.
I'm surprised at how quiet Pelican was. She is a bit of a unique if uncooperative girl. ❤
The close up cell phone footage with chewing audio was hilarious
Yeah... way to go lil pelican
Nothing but cuteness
And great job to the Meg.
❤❤❤🦇🦇🦇
She is so precious. Thank you for all that you do for the flying foxes and micro bats. You’re an amazing human being.
Oh yes,we do love survivors!
🦇💕💕💕🦇 so glad this lil angel is doing so well!!!
Oh yes, she's going to do well! 😁
That is some serious battitude! So calm and relaxed (and batty beautiful) when you're not inconveniencing her with your interference, but not afraid to let you know what (she thinks) she needs.
Well-matched adversaries: a fair fight if ever I’ve seen one!
Love to see Pelican steadily improving, she's such a cutie 🥰 I hope she'll regrow at least a little bit of the missing claw, but even if not she's young enough to adapt to the missing part, I'm sure of it.
This video really made my evening, thank you so much for it and for your unrelenting effort and wonderful care for these beautiful creatures 🥰❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼👍🏼
It's a good one for new viewers to see.
@@Megabattie A good one for debutant bat carers to see, as well. It would certainly winnow the wheat from the chaff.
Good to see this little one making progress - love that she knows her own mind ❤
Lmao.. she really gave u a workout for those dressings. Nice to see her so bright and alert (borderline too alert lol). Did the dressings actually stay on? She was giving me the vibes of a batty who'd remove them as soon as you turn your back lol
She removed it over the following 24 hours. I replaced it again when I took her to Adrian for the xray. No doubt she's managed to get it off again
@@Megabattie lasted longer than i thought, my guess was an hour tops lmao
It’s just amazing how fast she can drink juice. I think you were only using six grapes and this may have been a nine grape process.
The bats must be amazed at the amount of nectar the big scary thing comes up with.
She’s taken to those grapes very rapidly, clever wee thing ❤️
Pelican, you do have Batitude! Keep it up girl! We need you!
I truly admire your patience, Meg!
The longer the whole thing took the more stressed both of us were; I didn't want to use strength and force to contain her and add to her stress.
I had no choice but to be patient.
HUGE RESPECT for you Meg!👍💕 Your patience and steady hand(you could only use one), to apply the dressings, WOW!!😳👏 Poor sweetheart Pelican🩶🦇💕 with exposed claw bone!😥 She was able to enjoy those grapes so you enjoy some bubbly, you earned it!🥂🥰
You do such a great job Meg. Thank you.❤❤❤❤
I'm glad you're so fast and didn't get nipped, but it was fun to watch
I’m glad to see Pelican is doing good. You do amazing work. I do have a question. What exactly does bat fur feel like?
I can't tell you exactly because there's no way to give you an exact feel.
Baby fur is soft, almost cat softness.
Adult fur is like a soft dog fur - slightly coarser than baby fur.
@@Megabattie Ah. Makes sense as it looks like the fur of a cat/ dog depending on their ages. Overall, I’m glad you’re helping our flying friends
That has to be the cutest face I've seen in a long time!!
I had tears in my eyes laughing at the octopus wrangling.
Especially the "hey cool! Grapes!" face she made. Then "Wait a minute! Youre trying to distract me! Get away from my thumb!"
And around 9:38, with just the little snout poking out. And that snout was having none of this wound dressing business.
She entertained me greatly and continues to do so just thinking about our wrangling. I enjoy looking incompetent (well maybe not) on my videos; I could have edited it out but it was funny and made me laugh too. That little muzzle poking out where ever it could to supervise or prevent me from my dressing task.
Love your commentary on today's episode. Glad Pelican is doing so well.
Ces petits volatiles sont de véritables petits amours. Merci de les sauver ❤❤❤
Both are doing a super job ! The tiny aeronaut is so fast and coordinated and absolutely adorable.
Best wishes for a recovery to Miss Pelican
She's such a good girl. I'm so happy to see her doing so well. Her little tongue when she's drinking. It's good to see her eatimg grapes at last too 🥰❤ And a nice big poops 😂 will she be going for an Xray with Adrian? Its looks rrally sore 😢 Your fingers look extra tasty today 😂
Thank you meg, she'll be in my prayers ❤
PS Is she Purring???? Sounds so cute 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Ikr! On second listen, maybe something technical interfering with the audio on the bat side ? Had a similar problem with my last headset.
I don't know what the noise was; maybe the dishwasher was on. I listened to it a few times but couldn't figure it out.
I don't know what the noise is, Glitzy. I listened a few times but couldn't figure out the sound.
Oh, that is an odd noise, maybe the dishwasher?
Omg her trying to nibble your fingers is too adorable lol. Didnt even look like a hard bite as much as a "hey you watch it and give me more food" lol
She was telling me to stop playing with her thumb because it was hurting her and she didn't know what I intended to do.
She was nipping me and there were teeth involved, however it wasn't biting me, just a warning.
I had quite the giggle watching both you and Pelican become octopuses 😂❤
What a wonderful bat-mum you are. God bless you.
This is such fiddly work, I got all tense watching it. Like a bowler trying to remotely affect the trajectory of his delivery. Had to look away.
It's quite frustrating to watch myself on the video trying to get the dressing on; so close so often, but always that last little twitch of the thumb and I'm back to the start again.
I thought wrapping an ear hematoma was tricky 😂
You've got the patience of a saint with this feisty girl. I hope she does well.
My “trick” for this week is trying to get ear medicine in my German Shedder’s ears. It’s been a challenge, even with her favorite stinky salmon treats.
This little bad looks like an adorable pup or fox. So sweet. Glad you were able to rescue her.❤
Pelican is adorable for an octopus. I look forward to seeing her progress with her trip to see Adrian. Thank you, Meg. 💙
So happy Pelican is doing so well. And I just love reading your descriptions they are always very descriptive and I love it pelican is such a pretty girl I like her independence!! 💕🦇💕🦇💕
Brava!! Meg and Pelican! What a performance! This little one is willful, willey and very slither-y. She will liven things up in her next location.🧚
Luv your write up about Pelican, “you have to be an Octopus to wrangle an Octopus, lol……hope she does well with another carer and some bat buddies….Tobey 🌵🌞
Pelican seems to be doing better! she seems faster and more awake
You are so good with these babies. Love you for just being you helping these flying foxes. They are all so adorable. ❤
Thanks Brenda
Fantastic! A very adorable survivor!!☺️🥰❤️🦇🇨🇦
Love her one seeking foot!!🤣❤️
oh, just watching you handle this babies so effortlessly, amazing!
She's a wriggly girl because she wants to see what I'm doing and because I'm hurting her a bit she keeps reminding me with gentle nips.
They are ABSOLUTELY gorgeous! lol cute as SIN! God BLESS you for your service to these beautiful creatures!
She’s a feisty little thing! She sure has energy Now!❤❤❤
You have the patience of a Saint with bats! Maybe a miniature baby board like they use in the ER, if they still use them. It is amazing Pelican was not screaming. Thank you for all work you do.❤️
There were many things I could have done differently, however it was late at night and I thought it would be easy so I kept trying; I kept thinking I had nearly got it when we had to start again and again.
It's stressful for a bat to be held down and subdued with brute force; I wanted her cooperation and I wanted her to see that I wasn't doing anything nefarious, just trying to make her more comfortable and maybe even salvage the thumbnail if there was enough nail bed to regrow.
Next time my straitjacket will have several wraps with only her wrist and thumb exposed.
Your an ANGEL!!! Never stop being so kind.
This is fun - it's nice to care for a survivor no matter what obstacles they throw in my way.
What a little sweetheart it's wonderful that you and your team rescue these very needed animals I live in the US and we only have little brown bats here a lot smaller than fruit bats thanks for the video ❤️🦇
Meg you are patient and clever. Bravo.
"We have poo,". And it even a sort of gold color like treasure. 😂😂😂
Poo is good - it means things are working internally.
You are an amazing lady. Kudos on your wrangling skills with this girl. Better you than I lol thank you for being there for these wonderful creatures.💕☺️🥰👍
So sweet, I just think they are amazing ! I think you are amazing too !❤
Sometimes, too clever for their own good!
That must be very difficult to work on so fragile an animal. You are doing great things.
Meg the famous Bat Wrangler has won again! Against the most recent opponent who has serious Octo skills. Amazing work Meg! And Kudos to Pelican who tried her best. I hope she feels much better now thanks to you Lady BW haha. I hope you have yourself a HUGE glass of bubbly and some much eearned rest. Told you I'd find it. Tho there seems to be a whole bunch more re:the Pelican\Octopus lol. Thank you Meg🙏🏼🦇🪽🥰
Pelican is so cute!
I love the feistiness of her.
I just had my surgery this morning, and I needed some distraction, and as always you and your batties 🦇 gave me the distraction and laugh I needed.
I'll be binge watching your videos as I heal.
Keep up the great work, take care of yourself around those pointy bits.
🙂
Look after yourself
@@Megabattie Thank you.
Meg u have in trouble? lol I’m calling you the Wrangler from now on 😂glad to see,Pelican is a little feisty❤️🦇🦇🦇🦇
Your so wonderful to help the fox ,they are so very cute 😊
They're enchanting and interactive little creatures and have individual personalities.
We love watching you work you're so wonderful especially with a feisty baby
This started to make me anxious after a while. Lol
The wrangling made you anxious?
I was getting a little frustrated with the slippery octopus; I could have just used brute force and held her tightly which she would have loathed, which would have been very stressful for us both.
There were many things I could have done but it was late and I kept thinking I nearly had teh dressing on properly when she escaped again.
Beware the silent ones, lol. The whole time she never made a peep.
She's not being aggressive; mostly she's being curious and wants to see what's going on, and wants to let me know if it's hurting; she's not biting me, rather just nipping me to indicate pain. She's also squirmy and so wriggly that it was hard to get the sticky dressing on with only one hand while she was being so inquisitive and so active.
Pelican may be stubborn? But stubborn is a good way to survive! Feeling a bit positive on this little one’s journey so far!
She's doing really well in care and has her head in the fruit bucket around the clock
These bats are the cutest things ever.
I want Megabattie to care for me when I become an invalid. I promise not to bite.
LOL, Megabattie doesn't do humans.
Perfect 🇨🇦🦇🍁
Quite the wrestling match!
God bless her she's feisty! God bless you, too, for your patience and love for these beautiful creatures.
Precious Bat 🙏❤️
Pelican clearly has a mind of her own, you can see her checking it all out, figuring if she made a break for it could she get anywhere. She does like her juice, but although she does a great innocent look, there is nothing innocent about her, that mind is going a mile a minute.
She is not into you messing with her thumb, I had to laugh when her head popped out the bottom after you had her all isolated so you could dress it. She is a multitasker. She has very good sense of where all her pointy bits are, and where you are, her foot feeling out your scissors and hand. She has an impressive will. Was that sound as you were working on her better thumb her? I love everything about this girl.🥰🖤🇨🇦
I don't know what the sound was; I've listened to it a few times and still have no idea. Possibly part of the dishwasher cycle?
@@Megabattie That could be, I was listening to and thinking I had never heard a bat make that noise, but I couldn’t place it. It does kind of sound mechanical and rhythmic.🖤🇨🇦
It's just so great watching you,,,❤❤❤
Pelican reminds me of my mum….not to say she recalls her trauma & being a nippy one, but she made it! Time & time again. I’d love to rename this one Karla🦇❤️❤️🥰
She already has a name.
I’ve got a little black deer head chihuahua and I’m convinced they are related
The solution is simple. Learn to apply dressings with your feet. Pelican was using her feet. An octopus uses all it’s arms.
Silly me - I should've thought of that.
😂😂😂😂 shes a spunky girl❤
I'm not sure that the grapes are really more attractive than a bite out of Megabattie!
She's not actually biting me, rather she's nipping at me to keep me aware that I'm hurting her and she's not sure why and what I'm doing.
She's quite curious and wants to see what i'm doing.
I use to bribe my parrot with grapes to get him to step up when it was time to put him in his cage at night when I first got him so he wouldn't bite me. After awhile he would put himself to bed.
My cockatiels didn't like grapes or anything sweet, but they were all good with the Step Up command; all I had to do was to put my finger out and they would and still step onto it unless they're really annoyed with me, and in which case I use my firm command tone and they obey.
You teach me soooooo much!❤
Hi Meg, I am re-watching 05/24/24 hoping you are feeling better.🥺💕 You simply are an amazing Woman, Bat Rescuer/Carer🦇💕 and Human being, THANK YOU!!🥰
Mmm, thanks, but I'm still squidgy; it's another week until they make another attempt to fix the issue.
@@Megabattie Hi Meg! Good luck with whatever procedure you will be going through, to help you feel better. Sending love and positive healing prayers.🥺💕💕
You need string to secure the straight jacket next time.
Your persistence is amazing. Your patience and gentleness towards this little one is so impressive. Is the bat a big one? Or is this the normal size?
Pelican is a skinny juvenile with a lot more growing to do yet; when adult she will weigh about 700 grams (about a 1lb ish) and have a wingspan of around a metre.
I persisted with getting this dressing on because I thought I had nearly got it each time she wriggled and derailed my dressing application.
I should have gone and got a teddy and wrapped her on it and straitjacketed her with her face out and her thumb out.
She made me laugh.
She is quite a bratty battie! Step 27: have wine. Lots of wine
😂
If I was feeling better I would have shared the fruit of the vine with her - she gets the grapes and I get the bubbles.
Unfortunately I didn't feel well and have been off the bubbles for a few weeks now.
@@Megabattie,
I’m sorry that you’re not feeling well enough for bubbly. I hope you feel better soon. 💙 🥂
Pelican says: Now that I'm certain you care about me and I'm feeling better already...guess what nice lady? The honeymoon period is over and I can act bratty. ( This was great to watch. Pelican is so cute...I snickered too at how she was being difficult to you nice lady)
I loved her feist but had I realised she was going to go on for 20 minutes making it hard for me to get the dressing on her thumb, I probably would have gotten a teddy and wrapped her and straitjacketed her with only her thumb and face out. I kept thinking I nearly had it on and she kept giving me the run around.
If I hadn't been so tired at the time I would have been hugely entertained then; as it was I had to be entertained after the event.
@@Megabattie It's good to
hear you have a ready 'repertoire' for dealing with darling bats who chose to behave in a 'spirited' manner - 'straitjacketing'😂
@@lindayoung58 Straitjackets are good for babies who won't concentrate on their feeds and wriggle around; it reduces their options and they do better if they have one thing to focus on.
Straitjackets work well for uncooperative bats, with a little bit of grape aforethought and during-thought to occupy the pointy bits and provide distraction.
@@Megabattie Thanks for explaining. Now I can understand why my sister got her months old grandkids to love 'the game' of being wrapped like a burrito in their blanket near ' nap time' when they became most wiggly and active. Thanks again. Blessings
@@lindayoung58 It reduces their options... and they like being snuggled.
Hmm! Success! We have poo! Can .. can we avoid it..?
❤
It sounds like a cat purring at the end and im pretty sure you don't have one .
I'm allergic to cats, so no, no cats; I don't know what the noise what's but maybe it was part of the dishwasher cycle.
This old bat is still doing ok, her thyroid checked and 100% tumour markers 29. Should drop by the 1st july blood test.
That's good news you old bat...
@@Megabattie still lots of fight in her left 🦇
that was a workout...lol
@@Megabattie 😁♥️👍
😇❤🖤🦇🖤❤️
😀
😊😊❤❤🦇🦇
Is she producing the cat like purr noise near the end of the video?
No she wasn't but I don't know what the noise is; I couldn't identify it as one of my household noises unless it was coming from the microwave .
What would have happened if you stopped short and did not trim the bandage?
She'd probably have gotten the dressing off sooner; I trim the dressing so she doesn't have such a heavy weight on her thumb, and because it gives her more functionality with movement.
@@Megabattie so she doesn't need a splint
@@RoxanneSharbono-mb8ol There is no fracture and the joint appears to be functional, just missing the nail part of the thumb claw.
