My hair absolutely hates coconut oil. But I do pre-poo (hot oil) with jojoba and grape seed oil. My hair loves that and as it does not clog up the pores these are good for massaging your scalp as well.
I do a pre-poo but I do it in a different way. I spray my hair down and then add a mixture of conditioner with a little coconut oil mixed into it. then I apply to my hair and leave for a while before showering.

I haven’t used coconut oil for years but my hair definitely needs it ASAP as I’ve gone from black to blonde in the last 6 weeks and it doesn’t feel as strong I hope this helps 😊😊😊
I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel now that I've started my hair journey. I've learned so much already from you and I was a certified cosmetologist for years. I can't believe how wrong I was about coconut oil-it's something I've used literally every time I style curly, for the past 3+ years. It makes so much sense now why I'm not getting soft, defined curls, but greasy, wet looking curls that I almost always end up putting in a high messy bun. I've been so disappointed with my curls and I think using coconut oil daily is the reason I'm not getting the results I want. Thank you so much for creating this channel. PS You're also hysterical and even if your videos might not apply to me, I watch them anyway because you're so funny!
I use heat extra virgin olive oil as my pre-poo on dry hair and it works great (1/2 T in microwave 10-20 seconds). I leave in with a shower cap (or not) for a quick 15 min or work it in the day before and put in a loose bun and wash regular the next day. So soft! My hairdressers always comment how moisturized my hair is (even though I only did it a few days earlier and get lazy and rarely do it). I have super fine, dry, 3B hair.
It’s late and I will finish the video tomorrow, but first I want to say something: my hair always loved coconut oil. I stopped using it after all the drama but I want to go back. I still use it a pre poo but I was using it in the LOC method every time I washed my hair. I used my leave in, coconut oil and then my cream. So much definition and shine. Honestly can’t see how it is bad. I stopped using it because I am on the start of my natural hair journey and I’m testing things out but I wanna go back
I use olive oil, because it's thicker and heavier. I live in a tropical weather and I have naturally high porosity. Humidity is in the environment all year round, all day, every day. I do the L.C.O method and the olive oil actually protects my hair from the humidity. It lasts the whole week. I can't refresh because water will not penetrate the strand, but then, humidity can't either. I get amazing hair with low maintenance.
Clogging hair is the reason you should first spray your hair with some kind of moisturising mix (ex. water + honey) and then put oil on hair, so it will close moisture in hair. Then if you want to rinse it out, you just have to put some conditioner and leave it for about 10-20 minutes. Then just wash your hair normally and your hair will be amazing ;)
I don't see a difference when I use coconut oil. When I have used it I use conditioner to wash it out first because that's really the only way to get it out and then I shampoo and condition again.
I think a sulfate free shampoo won't wash the coconut oil off. I use coconut oil and a shampoo with sulfate in it, even with that I need to shampoo twice, oils are very heavy.
I use coconut oil like all the time and I always had frizzy, dirty hair and then I would put more.. recently, I've not been putting but now I get why EVERY THING happened!! Thanks for the really great tips and I swear, your channel is WAYY underated like damn, those are good tips!! Keep it up!!!!
I love coconut oil for my hair. I'll use it as a pre-poo hot oil treatment like Mell has done, but I use a lot more - literally saturate my hair with it - and I leave it in for several hours. I wash it all out with two shampoos, and I find my hair is a lot softer and my curls more defined.
@epit tan If my hair is very damaged (as it used to be), I pre-poo with coconut oil before every wash. But these days now that my hair is fairly healthy, I only do it once in a while. Yes, I only focus the shampoo on the scalp. But I shampoo twice. This should be enough to wash the coconut oil out as the shampoo travels down the hair shaft as you rinse it out.
@epit tan Personally I do warm it up a little before applying it because I find it works so much better when I do. Just warm it up slightly by placing it in a bowl over another bowl with boiling water. In terms of shampoo, I use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo. Lots of different types on the market, but I like getting one with cocomidapropyl betaine as the cleansing ingredient. x
Thanks so much for your amazing videos, they are so helpful! A tip for folks whose hair doesn't like coconut oil: Don't throw away your coconut oil or any care products with a high oil content yet! I have a hair mask that is mainly coconut oil, and while my hair (apparently medium to low porosity) struggles with it, my skin absolutely LOVES it. Especially any dry areas, whereever on face and body. So that is great
My hair fell in some parts bc of stress last year but now I can say it's not getting worse and I'm glad about it. I think it was due to applying oil in my scalp too, so I'm using oils mixed with shampoo at the moment.
Coconut oil makes my hair feel drier. I tried it like twice when everyone was saying it works wonders. It might work for their hair but mine hated it. I went straight back to treatments with olive oil. It's always been my real saviour. SHOUTOUT TO OLIVE OIL
I use coconut oil mixed with olive oil and blessed oil with lavender, tea tree and frankincense essential oils for a face moisturizer. It works amazing.
As someone living in a tropical country, coconut oil is never a solid lol. Not unless you put it in the fridge. So hearing that cited as one of the reason not to leave it in your hair, it makes me wonder if that's why its so good among the desi communities in my country and in india, but so detrimental to people in western countries.
Who Dunnit lol no it’s because it’s so dense and heavy. Coconut oil worked great for my hair when it was heat damaged (and therefore a higher porosity) but ever since I stopped straightening, it sits on top of my hair and leaves my hair very very dry once I’ve washed my hair. I use coconut oil every day, but for everything apart from my hair.
You would get less fallout when brushing if you started from the ends and worked your way up. It pulls more of your hair out (in droves) when you start at the top. Thanks for your videos!
Looks great! It was sooo informative! I was putting coconut oil on my husband and he has hair loss problems! I’m glad I watched this! Any tips on hair loss?
God i want your volume! I’ve tried so many things but my curls are 2c/3a and the length weighs down my roots very very easily. But my ends do so much better with a thicker, heavier cream. I’m working on it. Added in shorter layers and that helped a little. Anyone have suggestions?
coming from someone with mainly 3a hair, your hair will never have as much volume as mells. because she has tighter curls, they look like they grow out and up. our curls are bigger and will grow downward. its sad and i wish i had this volume as well but ive come to accept that i never will. clips at the roots while drying o help, but the hair will still get weighed down over the week
I use a root volumizer foam, then pin & diffuse to dry. Once completely dry, remove the pins and your root volume stays! I can't find any root volumizing products in the curly section though...always in the non-curly section.
Mel - First your videos are truly informative and helpful! THANK YOU! I have tried coconut oil in the past and my dry 3b curls do not like it. Coconut oil made my hair very dry and very stringy. I have a dry scalp and read that applying olive oil to the scalp for 20 minutes and then shampooing it out was helpful. I tried this and my hair was quite happy afterwards. The olive oil gave my curls some bounce and spring and helped them form bigger clumps. My hair responds well to olive oil and avocado oil but hates coconut oil. Hmmmm...Wondering if you might know why? What do you think? Have you ever tried olive oil or avocado oil? Thanks again for all the great info!
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to explain this product and the outcome. Also, where did you get your outfit? Not sure if its a one-piece swimsuit but I would like o find it or something like it.
I like hot oil treatments because they really bring your hair back to life. The thing is, most oils clog your hair in some way, not all of course, and then your hair gets all those products stuck inside of it and they can't get out! And even if you don't use oils that clog pores it takes so long to notice a difference, at least for me. I prefer to prepoo with something water based. It's easily absorbed by the hair, it comes out and moistures very well!
@@destineecassie7143 I love using flaxseed gel to prep my hair for shampoo! I know most people use it as a leave in, and I do that too, but most times I'll wet my hair and apply flaxseed gel to it for about 45 minutes and it really hidrates my hair better than oils! Other thing I know a lot of people use is either aloe Vera gel or rice water!
I think coconut oil is decent in small amount because I used the Shea moistures coconut oil and coconut milk hair mask with a hot bonnet and god was my hair bouncy and soft. Which was surprising because I’ve had problems with other heavier deep conditioners. Edit: I’ve never like straight coconut oil on my hair or skin but this Shea moisture coconut oil and she’s moisture mask was real nice
I prefer olive oil over coconut oil in every situation my hair loves the stuff and so does my skin. I use it to remove makeup and in the winter I also put it on my skin at night and it prevents my skin from drying out.
I just watched one of your other videos And I decided I wanted super moisturized curls. I was just about to put coconut oil in until I was saved by this video

Lol when I lived in Asia I put coconut oil in my hair all the time and it worked wonders ( I did mix it with Amla or Almond or Grapeseed or just normal too). I didn't realised it hasnt been working as well recently because of its state(solid/ liquid) was different.

Quick tip, anytime you put any kind of oil on your hair as a pre-poo. You should apply the shampoo first, with your hair still dry to be able to get the oil out. Verses doing it the regular way of wetting your hair first. It doesn't allow the oil to effectively wash out, and makes your hair feel oily. Give it a try. Love you videos BTW.

You stated in your video that there are other oils you can use instead of coconut oil, what do you recommend? What are the pros/cons? I have seen videos saying to put black caster oil on the scalp, would you recommend that? Are there different oils for the scalp vs the hair? Now that you tried coconut oil in your hair, do you do it more often? Would leaving oils overnight in your hair then washing them out be ok? How often would you use oil?

Same in Hawai'i, coconut oil is always liquid at room temperature. 😄
Same here in Indonesia

My hair absolutely hates coconut oil. But I do pre-poo (hot oil) with jojoba and grape seed oil. My hair loves that and as it does not clog up the pores these are good for massaging your scalp as well.
I do a pre-poo but I do it in a different way. I spray my hair down and then add a mixture of conditioner with a little coconut oil mixed into it. then I apply to my hair and leave for a while before showering.
I have very fine, low density 2a, 2b, 3a and the odd 3b curls, made thinner by the menopause/hormonal changes. Your wet hair actually looks like mine does after defusing, clipping etc..........so jealous of your lovely head of hair. Love your videos.
I live in the Mediterrenian and i use coconut oil which is the best for me, while olive oil destroys my hair
Could you do a video on low or high porosity hair? Tips & products for us to use as well?
Are you coco about the nuts! lol I swear she deserves so much more views but I'm lowkey happy cuz I don't want to share her with the rest of the world
Now now, don't be selfish... BUT....I feel you on that 😂🤣
Clogging hair is the reason you should first spray your hair with some kind of moisturising mix (ex. water + honey) and then put oil on hair, so it will close moisture in hair.
Question - Is the shampoo you use to get the coconut oil out with sulfates or sulfate free?
I love your videos and your straight up no bull talk!
I have curly hair and your channel is so helpful, keep up the good work. Ilysm💙
Coconut oil makes my hair feel drier. I tried it like twice when everyone was saying it works wonders. It might work for their hair but mine hated it. I went straight back to treatments with olive oil. It's always been my real saviour. SHOUTOUT TO OLIVE OIL
Same
I use coconut oil mixed with olive oil and blessed oil with lavender, tea tree and frankincense essential oils for a face moisturizer.
WHOA how good this blond hair suits you!
Coconut oil was a game changer for my hair when used as a prepoo and no heat, place a plastic cap on and I'm good!
I don't know what I was saying LOL. I just slap the oil on and cap at 30 to 60 mins....
@epit tan I never tried it warm so I don't know which is better. Have you?
damn u and ur hair so pretty 😩
Thanks for the info, what are your takes on RED PIMENTO OIL? Would love to know your opinion. Your videos are great and always very informational.
RoseAnnie Porrata as would I, I’ve been
Looking at it a lot here recently
Best curly hair videos! You’re always so funny too and so smaht
I know it’s been over a year since this was posted but I love how useful your videos are ❤️💕
You would get less fallout when brushing if you started from the ends and worked your way up. It pulls more of your hair out (in droves) when you start at the top. Thanks for your videos!
I think you just answered why my hair fell out. Thank you!
Looks great! It was sooo informative! I was putting coconut oil on my husband and he has hair loss problems! I’m glad I watched this! Any tips on hair loss?
I can make a video on this! But try watching my scalp massaging video. It’s good for hair loss !
God i want your volume! I’ve tried so many things but my curls are 2c/3a and the length weighs down my roots very very easily. But my ends do so much better with a thicker, heavier cream. I’m working on it. Added in shorter layers and that helped a little. Anyone have suggestions?
Try watching this video where I style my seesters hair! Hope it helps th-cam.com/video/8MdB1CxYBCM/w-d-xo.html
I have the same issue and found when I use clips while drying works amazing.
coming from someone with mainly 3a hair, your hair will never have as much volume as mells. because she has tighter curls, they look like they grow out and up. our curls are bigger and will grow downward. its sad and i wish i had this volume as well but ive come to accept that i never will. clips at the roots while drying o help, but the hair will still get weighed down over the week
My hair has always been very flat at the top and very curly in the bottom but I find that you can get volume with the right haircut
They have different molecular weight ;)
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to explain this product and the outcome. Also, where did you get your outfit? Not sure if its a one-piece swimsuit but I would like o find it or something like it.
I love Mels length in this video. Goals!
I just found your videos and I'm BINGING!! You're so fun and your videos are SO helpful! Thank you for your help!!
Rae do you have any recommendations on something that is water based to pre poo with??
@@destineecassie7143 I love using flaxseed gel to prep my hair for shampoo! I know most people use it as a leave in, and I do that too, but most times I'll wet my hair and apply flaxseed gel to it for about 45 minutes and it really hidrates my hair better than oils! Other thing I know a lot of people use is either aloe Vera gel or rice water!
Rae thank you sooo much! I’ll try that out 😊
I think coconut oil is decent in small amount because I used the Shea moistures coconut oil and coconut milk hair mask with a hot bonnet and god was my hair bouncy and soft.
Omg 😮
I wonder why every time I put in my hair it felt dry and then I end up cutting my ends off
Thinking it was dead hair 😫
You know how long my hair would be by now
🤦🏻♀️
Great video
I love how you inform us
I been binge watching
Your videos the last 2 weeks
Awesome job
Lol when I lived in Asia I put coconut oil in my hair all the time and it worked wonders ( I did mix it with Amla or Almond or Grapeseed or just normal too). I didn't realised it hasnt been working as well recently because of its state(solid/ liquid) was different.
Yes coz here at room temperature its usually liquid except the winter months
Do you have a video about Apple cider vinegar? I'd love to know the ins and outs about that.
Hi Mell! Is is okay to leave coconut oil in overnight and wash it out the next morning?
Thank you bunches ❤️
This is the first time I am learning that coconut oil is solid at room temperature. It is perfectly liquid at the temperature where I live
Watching this while I have coconut oil on my hair overnight. What have I done 😩
Just clarify. There's a lovely brand named ACURE and they have one called- Curiously Clarifying, shampoo and conditioner and it's quite nice. I Love it's lemongrass smell. Mell did a video on clarifying and used a brand called VERB (I think that's right). If you're interested find that video 'cause there's a link in the description and the kit was on sale just two days ago, and free shipping if you spend $50.
Keep Apple cider vinegar around and do acv rinses to your hair once a month then you wont have issues with product build up or clogged pores
Me too! My heart dropped when she said it and it's too late to go wash my hair now. Gonna wake up extra early tomorrow to wash it out
Can you do a video on diy coconut milk or Greek yogurt treatments for hair please?
This is SO helpful and informative, thank you! You are sort of like Shakira with Lucille Ball's personality (and gestures) - two amazing celebs, but you are still YOU at the same time. Please don't ever change!! :)
Coconut oil is my holy grail. I use it in my hair and on my skin daily and it keeps me soft, buttery, and frizz free.
But how about coconut water? I recently started using Garnier Fructis curl refrehser with Coconut Water on day 2 and 3 ... and not sure if this is good to do.....
I absolutely love watching your videos. I think I watched 9 yesterday 🤦♀️😂 I bought a denman brush (wasn't that brand, but it looked the same) and was so excited that I tried some of your tips immediately. I still am gonna try some things, but that brush changed the root game! Thank you so much for your videos. You are a WEALTH of knowledge and I am so looking forward to trying out more of your tips.
Hey weavie!! Thank you for such a lovely message. Such an incredible way to start another week! We both deeply appreciate you taking the time to write this and share your progress! We look forward to continuing to put out new videos every Tuesday that will continue to help you on your journey!
See you Tuesday!
The seesters❤️
Thank you, Mell! What about products that have coconut as an ingredient? What’s your opinion? Do you find they cause buildup? Thanks!
Im a little late to your video but I just found your channel and wanted to give my input on coconut oil. I love that stuff for the longest time it’s all I ever wore on my hair and it has been great. I’ve been trying out some of your techniques but I had to incorporate my coconut oil I usually put some on my ends after I wash 😬 but I’ve been doing it since forever and it just doesn’t feel right if I don’t. I coat my ends then prep and style. I find coconut oil helps give my curls definition. It just a must for me if I don’t my hair feels so dry
Can you do another one of these vs castor oil for growth
Could you try the crisan oil? It has over 50 oils in it. Would like to know what you think of it.
I leave coconut oil in my hair all year round and my hair is beautiful.
Yeah for me to . for some people work for some no but is doesn't mean is bad.
how I use it is overnight and then wash the regular way, it gets so much softer and shinier
What about other oils like Argan Oil? Could you do a similar video about that?
I was told using any oils that is used for cooking can attract the sun to your hair and actually fry your hair. If keeping the oil in your hair while going out in the sun.
What about castor oil?
Mallory Morrison
It is completely fine
Great for moisture, scalp health, and hair growth.
U have to miz castor oil with any other light oil like coconut or almond as castor is very thick
Can you do a video on what are the causes for dandruff and how to get rid of it.
Would black African castor oil do the same thing? Clog your pores? I was told to only put it at the roots but now I’m worried 😬
Great Video as always, I was wondering what's your curl type because we kind of have the same curl pattern my hair is just thicker and longer ?
Thanks for your comment!! I'd say I am in between 3b/3c!
I have put coconut oil straight on my face and have never broken out. The only thing I don't like about straight coconut oil on my hair is that it runs down my face and it's annoying.
Hi Mel do you think it’s best to do hot oil treatments after shampooing or before?
Will u pleeeease do a REVIEW video of the shampoo and conditioner bars u havd tried. Pleeeeeease pleease pleease! ❤😊
Thank God someone else is not for coconout oil on hair ; we have same belive , thank God i find you girl
I use coconut oil to prevent flaking and apply it only on the scalp.... Because i have a very dry scalp...
what other oil do you recommend for pre pooing???
Just recently found your channel and LOVE it! It's helped so much already so thank you! I have been using a coconut oil styler and was wondering if you have any thoughts on that. Its the first styling product I've ever bought so I don't really know what I'm doing and don't know if I should be using something else in order to avoid the coconut oil. Thanks!
What about shea nut oil? Or shea butter? (Deep cond)
I used it once it was hot oil then i used shampoo after 20 minutes and my hair was so smooth for 3 days after it went back to normal i lost like 400 hair strands tho
