My stylist ALWAYS thins out my hair because it is so thick and heavy and I like how light it feels after but in the long run its very frizzy and gets tangled even tho it's a short cut. I just did a big chop and now I'm gonna have to wait a year to cut it again and this time without texturing it :(
Lmao yes!! I can't tell whether the stylists stare at me and my hair because they love it, or because they never see my type of hair. I don't like all the staring. The worst is when they blow dry it and I look like cousin it and everyone in the salon is staring. Hence why I never go
I would love to have someone like you, who gets curly hair, to give me a proper cut! I feel like us curly girls get screwed over on so many fronts. One rant...when straight haired girls “review” curly products and bash them...I still blame straight hair girls doing this for some of my favorite products getting discontinued. If you have straight hair, please don’t use curly products and expect them to make your hair curly and if you do, please don’t leave negative “reviews”on those products...they aren’t for you!
@@mrspress8057 Girl, what? So bcs a handful of straight haired girls complain on a forum, whole products got discontinued? While they were marketed towards curly hair? I'd love to hear some examples
fia I’m not saying it’s a fact that products were discontinued bc of the bashing of products, but I feel like it could have been...there is a difference you know.
Just got a haircut and I'm so mad. I told my stylist to cut no more than two inches off and to re-layer my hair. Unfortunately, she got "scissor-happy" and cut off more than two inches. She didn't think it was a big deal because, when my hair is wet, an extra half-inch or inch doesn't seem that drastic. Dry is a different story. I think she was shocked at how much my curls shrunk up. What's worse is that she cut the top layers of my hair too short and now they're barely holding a curl. I keep having to tell myself not to worry and that it'll grow back :(
I know how u feel, I asked my regular stylist for a cut for wavey hair and shredded up my hair with those damn texturizing shears. My hair won't hold a curl either now. The next appointment to get it fixed at a quidad stylist is in 3 weeks. Im so upset and sad. Im depressed looking at my hair in the mirror and get reminded everyday. Ugh. Never again! How's ur hair by the way? Did u fix it?
The last time i cut my hair was 4 years ago and i just wanted a trim, this lady cut my hair soo much and its unever to this day. Im too scared to let anyone cut it, i know i have to tho im just soo scared
@@galileafuentes315 Cut it yourself honey. It will look strange at first, but after a couple of tries (after that many years you must have dead ends to spare so you can try giving yourself several trims) it will start to become easier. just try to do a straight cut no layers or anything to start, if you're curly it won't be very obvious since curly hair is all over the place anyway. That's how I started, and now I cut my sisters' and mother's hair too.
this deadass just happened to me and I'm terribly sad/angry about it & I don't know what to do, now there's two inches off of my hair and I look like a nine year old boy. Hope your hair grew back though.
It's obvious that you CARE about your clients and also want to offer a QUALITY service. Not only that, you stay informed so that you can serve a broad clientele because you recognize that everyone is unique and have different hair care needs. This is awesome and I hope you become a leading influencer in the hair beauty industry. I wish that more stylists had your attitude and passion, but it seems like they really don't belong in this industry because they are not willing to do what it takes to give their clients a fabulous hair-do, and I am so sick of going from one stylist to the next who claims they can do better but end up being a great disappointment. I really can't understand why there are just so many bull$@1%ers faking their styling capabilities.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I truly do my best to make sure all my clients are comfortable . Curly hair is unique to EVERY person. And that’s what makes it so beautiful / at the same time difficult to treat as a hair stylist. I do my best ❤️🥰
@@ManesByMell I hear you, girl. Nobody is perfect, but we are all capable of learning and using what we learn to the best of our abilities. Applying themselves in that way is what makes any service provider awesome in my opinion. Not everyone can be pleased, but as long as you know you listen to clients and do go the extra mile to treat them well, you can rest easy. All the best to you in all of your endeavors. I look forward to more of your great personality and top tips in your videos. Have a great day, Mel!
I'll never forget going into a hair salon and asking for layers and the lady saying I shouldn't put layers on curly hair because it will look funny. I was already so self conscious then and too scared to voice my opinion, that I let her just cut it one length. Never again! I love my curls and needed the volume. I'm embracing them and straightening my hair in almost a year. I love my natural hair and take such good care of it now thanks to you Mel!❤
Mell, I know this video is 2 years old but it is NEVER too late to know this info. I have long curly hair somewhere between yours and Amanda's. Finding someone who knows how to cut curly hair is sometimes harder than finding a needle in a haystack. They cut and forget about SHRINKAGE. We all know, there is NOTHING good about SHRINKAGE. ;) Your videos are perfection. Keep us in the know and laughing thru the whole thing. I have watched so many curly girl TH-cam videos. They are all just trying to mimic YOU. Thanks for all you do for all us curly girls. We love you!!!!
Wish I knew these ages ago! Stylists always want to thin my curliest areas, because they don't know what else to do. Finally started wearing my natural curls to my appointments and it's made all the difference!
THANK YOU!! For some reason, almost every time I've had my hair cut they thin out/texturize my hair, and it's a mess afterwards. You're right. It doesn't work, and only makes a mess of curly hair. I know this happens, and yet even though I say, "don't do it, every hairdresser seems to think my hair needs it." And then I hate my hair again. I appreciate this video so much, and all your other videos. I'm hooked on your channel and all the great info you're providing!
THANK YOU. I am about to turn 47, been having my haircut in a salon since 1982. I cannot tell you how many times it took for me to cry my eyes out over the years because people kept using thinning shears on my hair. It took me years to to stand up to stylists that wanted to do this and almost every single one has tried. I’ve only had probably three ACTUALLY good haircuts in my life. I’m getting older now, been married 20 years, two kids, and have been cutting it myself since 2017. It’s a wreck right now! I had rainbow hair during the pandemic, all done by myself and looked awesome! It was all to cover the incoming gray. Now, I’m removing all the color, bleaching my white bride of Frankenstein stripes growing in naturally, toning and cutting to freshen up and HOPEFULLY allow me to easily transition into the gray. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ This is a big expectation from myself here, lol. I am going to use your ponytail cut method because it’s the closest I’ve seen to the layering I need and I need a LOT chopped to get rid of what’s damaged so, I’m kind of terrified. There aren’t many “curly older women self haircut” videos, actually, can’t find any to my specifics, lol, so I have to patchwork from so many sources. Ugh, this comment has gotten so out of hand, my apologies! I am waiting for the mail truck because I had to order my toner online and I am so ready to get this done and over with! Thanks for all these videos! They are such a huge help to SO many people in ways you can’t even imagine! Wish me luck! 🍀🤞😂 🙏omg please don’t let me turn out like a silver clown 🤡 🤦🏻♀️
No one where I live has a clue what to do with curly hair. I’ve called several salons and asked if they have anyone that cuts curly hair, or knows anything about it, I’m told no every time. I have been doing it myself for many years now and I have no clue what I’m doing either, but I know I’m not going to get scissor happy like many stylists do, so I trust myself more at this point. I’d love to try a slightly different cut, but I don’t have a knowledgeable, trustworthy stylist, so I have given up.
I need a haircut but they charge $175 plus to just cut my hair and I usually end up crying at the end anyway. I’m better off cutting my own hair and making myself cry without paying someone else
omg thank you i just realized that i’ve never actually had a proper curly haircut! my mom has straight hair and i usually go wherever she goes to get haircuts (i have 2b-3b) and it always turns out so frizzy and unmanageable for like a month.
Great video/tips. Thank you! It is sooo hard to find a stylist who says they know how to cut curly hair and then actually DOES know how to cut curly hair. Sigh.
I have been getting my hair cut by the same lady for 20 years. I discovered her by chance when I walked into my nearest Supercuts during my first year of college. I simply asked for whoever was available because I had never truly known the value of a good haircut. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I moved back to my hometown immediately after college. And since then I have been making the three-hour trip every six months to sit in that same chair to get that same $15 haircut! I hope I don't ever move to another state! I don't know what I would do!
I took my sister for a haircut. The stylist was insiting on cutting her curly hair straight when she wears it curly. I pulled her from the chair! The stylist wouldn't listen to how she wears it and was insistent on cutting it how she feels comfortable. We left.
Years ago a very experienced stylist told me that it can take curly hair up to 2 weeks to “recover” from a cut.....that it can take that long for your natural curls to get their full potential back! I tend to believe that is true.
That happens to me every time. I always think that the final cut is way too short, but, it grows to a length that I'm satisfied with in around that 2 week time frame.
Really? Oh god thank you for mentioning this! I just got a cut and I am freaking out that it was too short. I'll give it two weeks before calling back the salon.
I've gone through 3 Deva certified stylists in the past year and a half. I guess 3rd times the charm because I'm happy with my cut for the first time! And her prices aren't ridiculously high.
I woud to know, how much you pay? We don't have curls hairdresser here and specialy not deva szylists. I think to go on vacation in a country, to get a deva cut haircutt. A lot of hairdresser can't cut curly hair even if they do they make them wet.😑
I just came from TikTok about the hate comment😆 I love how you "laughed" about the comment instead of feeling sad because that shows just how amazing you are. Mell, if you see this, I literally love your channel. You have helped my hair become so healthy over the course of just one year! This Friday I am going to help my 3rd person with their textured hair. I am so grateful for all your videos and humor. Because of you I am wanting to go to hair school in the future for specifically curly hair but hair in general. Thank you!!!
Literally second all of this!!!! I thought I had reached peak curly hair knowledge 3 years ago, and had no idea how far I had to go, and have to go eve still!! I continue to learn all the time, and I’m so grateful to you Mell for all of the knowledge and learning that you share with us gladly! I’ve been able to direct a lot of friends and recommend you to them as well! And I would also LOVE to go to school for textured hair! It’s definitely in the works! We love you Mell ❤️❤️❤️
Mel pls can you do a video on what to do if one is crazy enough to get their curly hair thinned out with thinning shears without thinking it through? How to best care for it and try to grow it out to it's beautiful natural state after this mistake.
Honestly, sometimes I tune you out unintentionally cuz I start staring at your curls so hard and daydreaming about mine 😂 😂 Cuz, ya know, the bigger the hair, the harder they stare! 😂 😂
What do you do if your curl type is very uncommon and you can’t fine anyone who has hair like you for pictures? I have wavy/curly hair. Some curls look like i curled them with an iron and some look wavy, plus i have ALOT of hair. Somewhere in the middle of 2c/3a. I can never find anyone with my hair, especially for pictures for reference on the internet
Same. I'm a huge mess of different curls and my hair is an odd texture as well. All I've found that kinda works for me is to tell them not to cut when wet. That way they can see where the curls fall and pattern
I have really similar hair. My hair isn’t that think but I have the same thing has some hair like total ringlets and other strands are just sort of wavy
So glad I found my hair stylist, she specializes in curly hair and teaches at a hair school. Before I discovered her, I went to a popular hair salon chain in my city and the hair dresser said she knew how to cut curly hair. When I went to my current stylist she said she cut my hair so uneven and it was uneven all over my head😳. 2 years ago I got my hair done at the same company but different location....she went right in with a flat iron and no heat protectant and cut my hair that way😳. I'm never leaving my hair stylist that I have now😂😂
I wish i found you years ago. i moved towns and got a lovely new stylist with curly hair who told me I shouldn't thin my hair.... changed my life she couldn't have been more right! good to know you agree!
Hey Mell, can you do a video about dry cut v cutting wet hair? I’m so old school I feel like it’s a sin to cut dry hair but now everyone seems to be doing it. It was wrong to do that my whole life. Please discuss.
@Manes by Mell I did the research. Followed them for a while on FB. Viewed all of the pics and read all of the reviews. I felt so confident going into this salon and getting my first haircut, by a curly professional, after a year of lockdown. We discussed products and how I style my hair. She had a mane full of thick, THICK, curly hair so I felt at ease. I asked her for layers on top, and to please give me some bangs ( I HATE my forehead). No worries, she said....I'm going to do what is called the Ouidad haircut. She explained the product she was using (she's an ambassador for Oudiad) and how to apply. Everything was going great, until she finished cutting. First, there was hardly any hair on the floor. Secondly, she forgot about the bangs, and after slightly drying my hair with the diffuser, I could see no difference from when I walked in. I tried to hide my disappointment as I walked to the counter to pay for her service. She charged me $150 "due to the length of my hair" (slightly below my shoulders). I quietly paid and fought the tears as I drove home. Needless to say, I won't be returning. I would love nothing more than to book an appointment with you, and fly my happy ass all the way to Canada.
YES! Communication. Communication. Communication! That is the Key! I've had the same hair stylist for 14 plus years and she used to use the thinning shears on my hair, But only because that's what she was taught to do. When I went CGM I went in and talked with her and said "Hey Gurl! I'm doing this new thing called the Curly Girl Method and everything I've read says no thinning and...blah blah blah blah blah." You know what happened? She Listened. She said "Okay! Let's do this thing!" We're growing out my asymmetrical pixie cut I've had for Several Years and going for an asymmetrical collarbone length bob. I think that's about as long as I can take it. She's Great, and thinks I'm funny and edgy. I used to let her dye my grey spot blue. Now I henna it myself but she's ready for me to go all grey so she can dye All of my hair blue! LOL! But we get along because we communicate as partners. Because face it, it IS a partnership. If you treat people how you want to be treated and communicate with them, they'll reciprocate and then everybody wins. 👍😁
I have put up with a lot from hairdressers because I didn't have the money for a nice haircut, and also because I'm too shy to tell them what to do. I have worn a one-length haircut for years because I know that they can't screw that up. But I really want to have a hairstyle that makes me feel good about myself! I'm going to try your advice.
Thank you so much for this advice! Haven't gotten a real cut in 7 years and that one was a disaster lmao. Now if I could only work up the courage to speak out in my appointments. . .
Mell - AYUUUDAAA! Just got my hair cut and *whimper* texturized!!! :'( I know what you're saying, I wish I had see your video before. I asked my hairstylist to bring out my natural wavy texture because the length and weight of it was flattening it out. I definitely lost my waves and now it's just a big nest of frizz sitting on top of my head. Now my question is, how do you style overly thinned out wavy hair?
I'm new to embracing my natural wavy hair so I've never had a cut whilst my hair was in it's natural state. So this video was very helpful if I ever get it cut professionally again. I actually normally just trim the very ends of my hair myself and I'll straighten it to do it.
I went to a salon in Jan 2018 and asked for a trim in layers to compliment my 2a waves and she cut it all one length. it was mid back and she cut it to shoulder. I grew it out and in June I went to a new salon and said the same thing this time with more photos and she texturized the ends I went to a different place in July and asked her to fix the texture issue because it looked disgusting and finally got layers that compliment my 2a waves. Sometimes you gotta go through your duds to find your goddess
I think an additional warning for the straightener part, is that if the stylist fully combs out all of the curls. Now what do I do after paying for a cut that came out wonky - and I couldn't have it fixed right away because I left the salon with wet hair. Do I go back to a stylist I don't exactly trust or do never go back to the salon again even though I get my nails done there?😅
Omg. Thank you for this. I’m super scared to get my hair cut... too many traumatic experiences. Lol. Ugh. I just went curly for the very first time a few weeks ago, after many, many years of straightening. It’s so tempting to drive from Pennsylvania to have you cut my hair. 😆
G Naoma R I’m learning to cut my own. I’m sorry but I’m not paying anybody else to ruin my hair. It’s really a shame what’s become of hairdressers these days… Do you still like listen and actually care now they seem to wanna get you in and out and don’t remember you even if you’re in there client for five years it’s like Groundhog Day every time you return. Sorry for the rant… I’m excited to learn how to cut my own hair!
I feel like there are no stylists that know how to cut and style curly hair. I tell my stylist every time that my hair is curly and want lots of layers for volume and he pulls out those thinning shears every time after cutting my hair wet and then blow drying it and adding mouse in it dry 😩 I have to go home and say sorry to my hair every time lol
Bianca Jingles go to a stylist who specializes in curly hair. Either go on their Instagram and check, or go find a salon through Devacurl and search for Devacurl stylists
omg, same!!! The only hairdressers I've been ok with so far are the old school ones or babers lol they don't use sheers and just work very traditionally. My hair feels healthier after their cuts, but they're hard to find these days, and i want to feel more like a big girl and use a salon lol
I have argued with stylist about not texturizing my hair at nauseam yet they always do it and come out of salons with frizzy yarn hair now I just cut it myself and hate salons
So true about the thinning shears!! One girl who cut my hair years ago advised me that ANY TIME ANYONE came NEAR ME with a thinning shear to RUN THE OTHER WAY!!
I’ve given up on this. Even the supposed deva trained curly hair salons aren’t giving me good results. It makes me wonder if the wavy hair types are more confusing to them or something. I have mostly 2c Botticelli on the crown with looser 2b underneath that doesn’t start to spiral until mid-ears-a really irregular curl pattern-if the clumps are separated they get cut in the wrong places and won’t curl afterward. They always, always finger comb all the curl out first before cutting. So I leave with pine tree layers that wing out instead of turning in. Curl pattern completely destroyed. I don’t know what to ask for to get a good result either.
@@taylorreneeyt I figured it out! Try asking for a "blunt base" or a "strong perimeter". I usually stick with a length above my shoulders, and if I want layers, I make sure they don't cut them any shorter than about 2 to 2.5 inches above my longest length. That seems to work for me. I get some volume on the top without those weird pieces sticking out everywhere. I did go to a curly stylist for this, and she helped me to figure out the terminology.
I cut my own. I don’t want layers. I listened to advice about needing layers since I have curls for 20 years. I finally gave myself a blunt cut, grew it out and I’ve never been happier than the last four years. Even when I mess it up, I can’t get mad because I did it. For free. I’d say my haircuts get better all the time and I’m learning a lot. When you have curly hair and you make a mistake, it’s easy to disguise the mistakes anyway. I sure don’t miss messy ole layers!
The Real Joe Bobsicle I thought I was the only person, who doesn't want layers! I do like a good(!) layering, if someone has thick and/or coarse hair, it really gives them more volume and lightness. I have 2c/3a, newborn fine and thin hair and it would only make my ends transparent and limp and it's already weightless, I can easily lift it with my hands. My roots are pretty straight because of this, but I honestly never thought of it as a bad thing, until I've read and heard tons of comments from people who are desperate to make their roots curl. I always thought it looks very cool and retro, especially with a blunt cut. When you look at classic movie star hairstyles from 1920s-60s (or even in some older, antique styles), more often than not, they get more curly towards the ends but I guess it's only my association. ..
ocandro my hair is baby fine too... and I have a tonne of it. I have a lot of curl at the root everywhere except the crown (right where I’d most want curl at the root... figures) but I make it work. If I see people with layered haircuts and the ends are all neglected and flying away, I judge them....lol... seriously I see some nice layers now and again but not for me.
I have said to new stylists point blank: Hair me: NO TEXTURIZING - OF ANY KIND - WHATSOEVER - PERIOD. Even if my head is on fire and the ONLY way you could extinguish it is to texturize my hair - LET IT BURN
I had a hair cut so bad last year I’ve been putting it off since. My favorite hair dresser moved and I had to find a new one. I told her what I do and she ignored me. Starts styling my hair in a way I tell her is too high maintain everything for me. Finally I look in the mirror and my right side is longer then the left. Ended up having to hack off even more and she seemed so put off by the fact I was upset at that. And this was a curly hair salon.
Been searching 38 years for someone to cut my curly hair correctly and am amazed how many stylist “texturize” my hair. Like WTF, do you not see all this texture???? I finally found someone in the Chicago area. I travel an hour to go to her and won’t ever let anyone else touch my hair.
I go to Vivian at Royal Hair Salon in Niles IL. It has to be Vivian no one else. It’s not a big fancy place. It’s a small salon in a little plaza. Vivian is the owner
It'd sad that I'm here although I know for sure there are no experienced hairstylists in my area at all. Finding someone who actually knows how to deal with curly hair is the hardest thing ever.
steffytard I’ve thought this too. I’ve had such a hard time getting my hair back to the way it was before some unfortunate damage that I’m ready to just pay for the upkeep. I wish she was in the US!!
One of the worst cuts I ever had was also one of the most expensive. I was a student and it was the early 00s. Stylist broke out the straighteners. I didn't even own straighteners. The hairdresser I trust now actually works for one of the low-cost walk-in salons in my relatively small town. She keeps my hair as dry as possible and listens to me when I say 'no layers'. Is it as good as a Diva cut? No, probably not. But it's nice enough and readily accessible in my town, and that works for me.
I complained to a lady who texturized and thinned out my hair. I was so pissed of because I told her no thinning but she did anyways by slide cutting my hair with scissors. I ended up getting my money back. I am traumatized because this is the second time I had a bad experience getting my haircut. The other lady I told off and reported her for ripping my hair with a brush. Did a rush job and barely cut it.
This video showed me that I don't fully trust my stylist. She does cut my hair wet first. Then she always blows it out straight even when I say I want it Curly. I didn't know about the thinning issue either.
Yuppp when my old stylist came out and thinned my hair I hated it. Then I ended up with more breakage after a cut that had way more hair taken off then needed. The consultation left me confident then when I saw how she styled curls I hated it. I then went to a more professional expensive stylist to try and even out the thinned ends and as much as it looks better ...this is going to take much longer to grow out now
Omg i had flashbacks from getting my hair cut at age 10. The lady just sat me down, wet my hair down and cut it. No questions, she cut it to chin length (my curly hair dry was hip length) then she put in some stiffening moose on my short, one-length hair and let me walk out with it still wet. When it fully dried in the Caribbean sun, my hair was mid ear length super frizzy and looked very damaged. I couldn't tie it or clip it up which was against my school rules. .-. I was bullied even harder that year. Fuck all the hairdressers who lie and say they can cut curly hair
Omg, I just got a flashback. A long time ago I asked for a layered haircut, and the hairdresser texturized it. And I precisely explained what I mean by layered before she started 🙈
I’m so sorry that happened to you :( my hair is down to my butt too so I would be so unhappy if that happens to me. But could you maybe not say you were “depressed” because of it and that you have ptsd? Those are serious mental illnesses which I think shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you actually do have ptsd or depression, I apologize. I don’t mean to be rude about this, I just see a lot of comments using mental illnesses very lightly. I hope you’re not offended by my request :(
@@NP-xv6kp people can get ptsd by a multitude of events. Someone who treasures their long hair could absolutely be traumatized and depressed if it’s suddenly all gone. I think it’s a bit insensitive to insinuate someone can’t have ptsd over something you don’t think is serious enough, or meaningful enough to be traumatic.
Wow this just changed my life....! I never liked a haircut in my entire life. All the hairstylists I tried ALWAYS straighten my hair to cut it and ALWAYS texturize even when I say I always wear my hair natural. Now I understand why it never gives the result I want and why my curls don't look happy...
I really did how this lady cut my hair but I don’t like how she did process tho. She literally brushed my hair dry with a brush creating frizz on my hair
Yeah. That just happened today. Moved to a new area and looking for a stylist. She screwed up my hair and the layers were not addressed or cut, she used thinning shears and I didn’t realize it until about half way through the cut. Never again. I love looking like sideshow bob, said nobody ever.
Thanks, Mel for your thorough explanation on how to select and get a trim vs a cut and a diva cut and a wet cut for our curly hair. I so wish youtube and you were around during the 70, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. I haven't been able to get a decent hair cut/trim for over 10 years. I've somehow managed to trim my own hair with disastrous trims. First, I've always had difficulty finding someone who knew how to cut curly hair. Second, the only 4 I found since I was a teenager (now in my 50s) I had moved away then the last one had died in a car accident. Prior to the one that tragically died, another one would always want to give me a haircut that she knew I couldn't manage when I had it short. Another one purposely ruined my haircut. During these past 10 years, I haven't been able to find anyone I can trust and that is affordable. When you're living on a fixed income paying $50.00 or more on a cut is out of the question. Now I'm dealing with neck and back injuries which makes it difficult to get my hair washed at the salon. I spoke to someone who recently did my sister's hair and told her my hair is coily curly over the telephone and not like my sister that has loose curls. She mentioned it would cost $50 without washing and without blowdrying and without seeing my hair up front. Is that a reasonable rate? My lifestyle is low-maintenance, shoulder-length hair which I leave curly in the Spring until the end of Summer (Sept). The rest of the year (Fall/Winter and Late Spring) I always blow out my hair. My hair is similar to yours but is now shedding excessively I guess due to age/lack of hormones. I would love to hear your opinion on this matter and what would you suggest?
I go to a chain hair cutting place. I go in with my hair already washed and detangled in a braid. I also get a single length hair cut for my curls. And it doesn’t look bad I don’t understand why everyone wants me to get layers. I don’t like having bangs or short pieces. 🤷🏻♀️ it’s also frustrating that people think curls only look best in layers. I’ve had layers it was frustrating.
I have the most difficult time finding photos of what I would like. I don't ever see people with hair like mine who's cut I think would look good on me. I see enough beautiful people (like you Mel!) with hair like mine, but then I think but not for me.
I HATE THINNING SHEARS!!!!!! I think 99 out of 100 hairstylists say they can't cut my hair without using them. Or short layers. My hair is NOT curlier cut short. I get the blank look. "Of course I can cut wavey/curly hair but I have to do it. Trust me". I have been so traumatized by hairstylists that I've worn a ponytail as my ONLY hairstyle for the majority of my adult life. I'm tired of it. I think I can cut my own hair better. I'm about to find out (my hair grows too fast to keep it short). It doesn't matter if I'm getting a $20 or $200 haircut. I have very very rarely seen a style with my curl pattern to bring in a picture. I want my own style anyway - not someone else's.
Mel I'm soooo grateful to have found your videos! My stylist unfortunately texturized my thick curly hair 😥 now I'm an unhot mess! I plan on growing this mess out a bit before booking with you. It will soooo be worth the 4.5hr drive! I can't wait! If you have any tips to prepare my tresses to make things easier for you, I'd really appreciate it! 😊 you're the stylist I've been looking for forever!! You're knowledge is outstanding and you're personality is awesome!
I've been watching your channel for the last two days before/after work because your videos are so informative and helpful and I cannot get enough! I can't wait for wash day to try out the things I have learned from you. My question though is, I am a dog groomer and I work with splashing water and blow dryers when drying dogs, along with a low grade humid environment in the bathing room, using clippers and shears on a moving animal which calls for usually putting my hair in an up do (especially with having past mid back hair length). I can go around 4-5 at most of not having to wash my hair but the frizz and tangles get unruly, I use a satin bonnet at night to sleep in, and refreshing is nonexistent because of the frizz and tangles that my hair develop because of my job. So my question is, what would you recommend for someone like me to maintain my wash day with the obstacles I endure with my work environment? Should I shower more often even though my hair doesn't feel like I need it but it's more so to get rid of the frizz and tangles? I've become so hopeless over time, I need guidance with my particular situation! 😭
I find that devacurl haircuts are way too expensive. At least in my city. For example even the least experienced "devacurl" stylist charges $80 at a nearby salon, with prices going up to $140 for more experienced stylists. In a non-branded salon, I pay $60 before tip for a curly hair cut by an expert stylist. Also, why do you call a dry cut a deva curl cut? is the technique trademarked by deva curl or something? I'm pretty certain dry cuts were around before deva curl existed.
The hair stylists in my city have no idea what to do with curly hair. They always make my hair look very frizzy and dry like a lions mane... I don't really know what to do, I thought of cutting my hair for myself but I'm scared of messing it up
Fuck she got me when she mentioned people who got thinned their hair out "you know what am saying" fuck yeah I do I just noticed everything you said is actually a fact lmfao
I don't like bangs on curly heads. It makes the layers look too severe. This is why I don't get my hair cut by so-called curly hair experts. I just cut it myself. And I agree with Mel...the best way to cut curly hair is either semi-wet or dry, half styled, and then literally cut curl by curl.
I think I’ve been getting my hair cut wrong this whole time, I only wear it natural, I rarely even use styling products and it’s always cut wet or flat ironed and I really hate when they flat iron it because I don’t use heat on my hair really ever. My cuts never look great :(
could you give us advices for curly hair cut at regular hair salons, incase I don't have curly hairdresser around ? like what to say , what to be aware of not happening etc.
What is the best way to manage curls that have been texturized? My hairstylist always does this, and my hair does tend to get frizzy. I wasn’t aware that this was a no-no until just watching this video today.
I had Deva cuts for over a decade, but I tried a new hairdresser in January who texturized my hair - and now it’s June and a few cuts later and I’m still growing it out to get back to normal! Disaster. The only thing I can suggest is use heavier product in the ends (like argan oil) to flatten out the textured hair until you can finally cut it all out.
@@mellio9077 thank you for your response! That’s what I’m trying to do for now, hoping that lots of gel and moisture can help cover up the texturized parts until it gets trimmed out. I have an appointment tomorrow for a trim and I’m working up the courage to speak up and request no texturizing. I love my hairdresser as a person and don’t want to upset her by questioning her techniques.
@@StigmataX13 well, that’s sweet of you to care about her feelings. but this is a business transaction that you are paying for. so from a professional standpoint, she should be able to handle your request without taking it personally. you are the client-this appointment is about you, not her. you shouldn’t feel bad for explaining exactly what you want. the hairdresser who texturized my hair is really lovable as a person. but given that i scheduled a Deva cut and she did something opposite, that i’m now waiting 6 months to correct, she doesn’t get my business anymore. that’s just par for the course.
The last haircut I got, the stylist used thinning shears and now that I am embracing my curls, they look so stringy and separated. I guess I just have to keep growing them out :(
@@trinitymarleen5134 me too. My curls won't clump anymore and now I have to cut my hair short. I grew out my hair for 2 years from shaving it down to the scalp. Im so I upset. Now i have to hopefully cut out all the texturizing with just a shoulder hair cut :< I feel you. It sucks.
What drives me nuts is EVERY stylist I go to, after a cut or color, straightens my hair then curls it. It drives me nuts. I wear my hair naturally curly. And I tell them that, but they always think we should not wear our hair natural.
Ohmigosh, yeeeeees! I shouldn't be afraid to go and get a haircut! I've been scarred by past cuts hair stylists gave me because they were afraid to cut my curls. I mean, I had such a terrible cut 3 years ago that I had to blow it straight until it grew long enough *not* to look like Orphan Annie's brunette twin if I let it curl😔😣 I've been trimming my own hair ever since. It's awful. I can't remember the last time I was happy with my hair. Thank you so much for this video! Now I know EXACTLY what I've been doing wrong and for what to ask in the future.💜 I have fine hair, so it's easy to blow it dry with a large round brush. BUT, I haven't worn it straight since 2016; I'm a wash-n-air-dry gal-a-rino. (Probably bc I've been cutting it myself & KNOW it won't look evenly shaped.) This gives me the push to find the best stylist for my hair. You da best, ladykins!
I know this was filmed a while ago, but I need help with my hair. I hope you see this. I went to a hair stylist who has curly hair. So, I thought she would know what she was doing. I was going in to get a bad cut fixed, and she broke out thinning shears without asking me or informing me. Before I knew what was even happening she starting thinning my hair. After about two chops with the thinning shears I asked her what she was doing. That’s when she informed me she was thinning my hair. My heart dropped. My mother (who has extremely curly hair) has told me from a young age to never thin my hair. Well now I’m trying to grow out my thinned hair. But while doing that I have no idea how to style it or do anything with it. My curls have lost a lot of their natural curl pattern and just don’t look good. Do you have any advice?
I wish your salon was like an hour closer or that I found you channel before our trip to Niagara falls a few weeks ago. Good hair would be worth a 4 hour ride though
I've spent the last 20 years looking for someone who can cut my curly hair. Every stylist I've consulted with tells me what I want to hear "yes I can cut curly hair". Then EVERY TIME I sit in the chair I walk away with a straight hair haircut...either uneven on one side when dry or they insist on blow drying it out straight and running a straightener through it because they have no idea how to style it. I would LOVE to know how to identify a good curly hair stylist, what questions to ask them and how to know when I am being lied to just to get my business. Sorry for the rant....but it is a real frustration.
@ManesbyMel I am watching this video before meeting with a new stylist for the first time in 5 years. Nervous to say the least. I am leaving my last stylist due to her love of texturizing sheers and lack of styling/diffusing technique. Lovely person but her curly skills left my curls sad and broken 😩
I am devastated. I don't know what to do. I assumed the stylist is more knowledgeable. I showed a picture of what I wanted, a beautiful, voluminous, curly bob just below the chin. My hair ended up getting chopped all over to about 2-3" long on various parts of the back of my head, and then it was thinned out w the razor cut. The front looked a lot shorter than the picture but it had been styled w gel and from the front seemed ok. I didn't see the damage in the back until I felt it while washing and looked on the mirror. It was like concave w almost a short mullet at the nape that almost looks like claws over my neck. The razor cut left all these little pieces that sproing in weird ways all over, and it is so, so short that I can't tie it or get another cut to fix it. The damage from razors is all the way up. My hair went from curly and bouncy to stiff, ugly, mutilated short hair. I am mortified leaving the house and every time I see or feel it just waves of emotional pain and shock. I don't know how to live with this.
I'm so sorry for you, that must feel terrible! But don't worry we're living in 2020 and I believe there are many solutions to bad hairstyles; you have wigs, hats or even chopping your hair all off. It's been considered very fashionable lately. But if you don't think you can handle the bald look then wigs might be your best bet. Start trying some out and it's better to start with a cheap one before buying an expensive one. Once you settle down on what wig suits you best you should definitely invest on a good one that could be a bit expensive and wear it 'till your natural hair grows back! There are many videos on TH-cam about how to take care of your wigs and how to make them look as most presentable as possible.
Thanks! It's been a few weeks, I am feeling better and getting over it-been working with clips, headbands, wraps, and styling product while waiting it out
I'm so sorry girl I hope it grew out. Tbh I'd consider a wig no lie. I had a not great cut but yours sounds horrific. Or you are a really good descriptive writer .
"Did they ask you enough questions?" My hairdresser sure didn't after rebonding my hair (she also fried it to the point where it was suddenly a ball of hay-like dry spiky frizz after the first wash. NEVER happened before.). I asked her for an asymmetric bob. Showed her like 3 different pictures of the exact same cut, and told her I don't want the very end at the front to be a sharp tip. I ended up with a REVERSE-ASYMMETRIC BOB. It was LITERALLY long at the back and short at the front and she cut my hair shorter than I'd asked and then said she did it so it would last longer (I didn't ask for that!). When I came back a week later and told her that my hair was dry and frizzy and that I actually had to straighten it daily so it wouldn't look so damaged, she genuinely seemed offended and acted as if she'd done nothing wrong.
I feel that!! Back in April I got my haircut after growing it out for 7 months from a long pixie. I explained to her my issues with my hair (weighted down, flat at the top) mind you, my hair is already thin as is.. she THINNED MY HAIR OUT. I was mortified. I cried for the next few days because all my curl was gone. I messaged her and told her what she did wrong and she didn’t reply, she tells everyone I talked crap about her but I didn’t!! I was so nice about it lol
@@deefhead8440 I honestly don't get people like that. If I were a hairdresser and did something wrong, I'd feel so bad about it. I'm glad I've found a good hairdresser now who listens to me and I've grown my natural hair out so no more worrying about destroying it...
I might just flying up to canada to get my hair cut by you
@Joey Brodie why tf r y’all hacking ur gfs instagram. if ur gonna scam ppl at least seem realistic
@@maya-xt3oj they are bots
When your hair stylist says "Wow you have A LOT of hair!" with a concerned look on their face you know it probably won't end well. 😔
My stylist ALWAYS thins out my hair because it is so thick and heavy and I like how light it feels after but in the long run its very frizzy and gets tangled even tho it's a short cut. I just did a big chop and now I'm gonna have to wait a year to cut it again and this time without texturing it :(
Have you thought about an undercut?
Lmao yes!! I can't tell whether the stylists stare at me and my hair because they love it, or because they never see my type of hair. I don't like all the staring. The worst is when they blow dry it and I look like cousin it and everyone in the salon is staring. Hence why I never go
I get the same comments. They have to take breaks while doing my hair because I have so much.
I also used to get "you shouldn't cut your hair above the shoulders because it needs to be weighed down by the length"
I legit once had a hair stylist say to me, "Don't worry dear, curly hair will be back in style one day."
I actually lol'ed. I'm so tired of curly hair being looked down upon.. I feel like I have to constantly defend wearing my hair natural
My hair is straightened right now and yesterday my dad told me “keep your hair like that, don’t go and put curls in it.”
I had one tell me how unfortunate it was I was a natural redhead
Savage. Jelly, but savage.
@@amanday3103 That is so messed up! My family always tells me to stop straightening my hair because they like it better curly.
Literally no straight haired girl has done that
fia I’ve seen many bashing products in forums.
Then the scrunch it omg I have curly hair no you just put a shit ton of product in your hair
Mel you should do an update video on this! Getting ready to cut my hair again after this loooooong quarantine period! I’m wayyyy over due! Thank you!
🙏omg please don’t let me turn out like a silver clown 🤡 🤦🏻♀️
And... This is why I just do my own trims and cuts. Could you make a video with some basic does and donts for those of us who cut our own hair?
She really advices not to cut your own hair. But, she does give a few tips on how to give yourself bangs, maybe those tricks can kind of help too?
My old stylist told me she doesn't believe in curl types and that they are made up. I never went back.
Shocking 😱
Whoa! 😬🤯
Mrs Press same with me
I relate to this so much. I'm scared to go to the salon cause they screw up my haircut every single time
Mell has a video where she shows how to cut your own hair
Best explanation of why getting a dry vs wet cut. Thanks
We left.
👏👏👏👏👏👏 I wish I had done that last week 😭
Bring a picture of your own best hair day and pictures from others that aren't a perfect match but close and ask if its possible
Same here. I've never seen a pic with similar hair.
Honestly want to fly to Canada just to get my hair done by you! 😫

Still looking for a great stylist. Met too many that are scissor happy. Finally got my hair long after several months.

I grew it out and in June I went to a new salon and said the same thing this time with more photos and she texturized the ends
I went to a different place in July and asked her to fix the texture issue because it looked disgusting and finally got layers that compliment my 2a waves. Sometimes you gotta go through your duds to find your goddess
I've been concerned that my stylist has been texturising my 2c/3a hair. So glad you've confirmed texturising is a no-no.
I know i do 2.. It's sad that we have to be scared to go get her haircut cuz they're going to mess it up
omg, same!!!
Justme77 my hair is recovering from such a cut with thinning shears!
Once a "hairstylist" texturized my curly hair straight from the roots. :) Yeah. That was my last visit to a salon. I cut my hair ever since.
The pine tree layers!!! Omg same!! I really do not know what to ask for to fix this issue.
I live in Chicago where do you go?? I am desperate to find someone who cuts curly hair in the chi area.
Ready to hop on a plane to Canada to get my hair done by you
steffytard I’ve thought this too. I’ve had such a hard time getting my hair back to the way it was before some unfortunate damage that I’m ready to just pay for the upkeep. I wish she was in the US!!
bsperez07 ugh same, so much heat damage.
Well...my new hair dresser thinned out my hair when I cut it into a pixie and I was having so much trouble with Friz.
What is slide cutting? I thought my stylist used a razor it felt like it but she says she didnt. Does it look choppy? I dont like it either.
Lol I went to someone recently to get a curly cut and she straightened my hair haha. It doesn't look terrible but I do want to get a curly specialist.
Wish we have a curly hair stylist like you in India...love your hair girl...
Thank you so much for your kind comment and for watching 😍❤️
I knoww i might fly to Toronto just for my hair care
Im so depressed because my hair was down to my butt almost and I went in for a trim and they cut it all the way up to my ears. I literally have PTSD
Are you serious?
Was there a lack of communication or something?
I’m so sorry that happened to you :( my hair is down to my butt too so I would be so unhappy if that happens to me. But could you maybe not say you were “depressed” because of it and that you have ptsd? Those are serious mental illnesses which I think shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you actually do have ptsd or depression, I apologize. I don’t mean to be rude about this, I just see a lot of comments using mental illnesses very lightly. I hope you’re not offended by my request :(
How does that even happen
What is texturizing?
I really did how this lady cut my hair but I don’t like how she did process tho. She literally brushed my hair dry with a brush creating frizz on my hair
Can you do a video on growing out a cut? I’ve got a curly shag now that’s almost shoulder length, and I’d like to know the best way to grow it out.
Nikatronixx yes but curly hair experts are so damn rare that they wanna charge that much. We almost have no other choice.
The hair stylists in my city have no idea what to do with curly hair. They always make my hair look very frizzy and dry like a lions mane... I don't really know what to do, I thought of cutting my hair for myself but I'm scared of messing it up
Yeah, I have no idea where I'm going to go once salons open up again!
GIRL. You're the best hair TH-camr by farrr
Fuck she got me when she mentioned people who got thinned their hair out "you know what am saying" fuck yeah I do I just noticed everything you said is actually a fact lmfao
I just watch this and i feel you 😳. Now i have to wait and fix this mess lol
Yes, thinning is a JOKE, big no no
I don't like bangs on curly heads.
My cuts never look great :(
Ugh I wish u were in California! I need u to cut my low af density curls! No one can seem to get it quite right :/
could you give us advices for curly hair cut at regular hair salons, incase I don't have curly hairdresser around ? like what to say , what to be aware of not happening etc.
This! I'm in the middle of nowhere and there aren't any hairdressers around.
I'm thinking about getting a rëzo cut! Can you do a video on your thoughts on this type of cut?
I guess I just have to keep growing them out :(
Ahhhj, the trauma! My sidelocks look awful thanks to those damn thinning shears.
Damn, I just had a haircut yesterday. They used texturzing shears on me. Is that the same thing as thinning shears?
@@Babychimichannel yep
That happened to me and I'm still sad a couple months later. I'm going to cut my hair super short so I can get my curls back.
It sucks.
i'm just starting my curly hair journey, after straightening for decades.. thanks for these tips
What drives me nuts is EVERY stylist I go to, after a cut or color, straightens my hair then curls it. It drives me nuts. I wear my hair naturally curly. And I tell them that, but they always think we should not wear our hair natural.
Good Lord. I wish I had a great stylist like you.
Ohmigosh, yeeeeees! I shouldn't be afraid to go and get a haircut! I've been scarred by past cuts hair stylists gave me because they were afraid to cut my curls. I mean, I had such a terrible cut 3 years ago that I had to blow it straight until it grew long enough *not* to look like Orphan Annie's brunette twin if I let it curl😔😣
I've been trimming my own hair ever since. It's awful. I can't remember the last time I was happy with my hair.
Thank you so much for this video! Now I know EXACTLY what I've been doing wrong and for what to ask in the future.💜
I have fine hair, so it's easy to blow it dry with a large round brush. BUT, I haven't worn it straight since 2016; I'm a wash-n-air-dry gal-a-rino. (Probably bc I've been cutting it myself & KNOW it won't look evenly shaped.) This gives me the push to find the best stylist for my hair. You da best, ladykins!
Questions when use your natural state does that mean no products used?
Denise C naturally curly has a locator tool for curl specialists near you.
Yes! It is frustrating to drop a bunch of money on someone to make make your hair look worse than it did before
@ManesbyMel I am watching this video before meeting with a new stylist for the first time in 5 years. Nervous to say the least. I am leaving my last stylist due to her love of texturizing sheers and lack of styling/diffusing technique. Lovely person but her curly skills left my curls sad and broken 😩
One of the absolutely most useful videos I have EVER seen!!!! I might actually let someone trim my hair
Ah, perhaps this explains why the very back of my head gets the most knotty, that's where is consistently thinned out/texturized
Hats girl, hats and more hats. I am SO sorry! This is why I cut my own as I also have had terrible chops in the past
Start youtube searching how to grow out short curly hair or maybe how to grow out bad curly haircut
Or you are a really good descriptive writer .
that moment when you're about to schedule a curly hair cut so you check out the stylists instagram and only see straight haircuts .....yeah imma pass
OMG, I LOVE you, Mell! You always light up my day and make me laugh while giving the most immaculate tips!
