Girl, I watch your videos and feel like I'm coming to class completely unprepared. After about 2 minutes in I'm scrambling for a notebook and pen. I didnt know there was so much I needed to know. You are a Godsend!! Thank you!!
I have very heavy, very coarse, wavy-curly hair (2c-3a). Once I rinse out my conditioner, I absolutely cannot pull my curls in any way or else they stretch out too much and frizz up. I know "just scrunching" in product is supposed to be "bad" now, but it's literally the only thing that works for me. I can't use praying hands, raking, or finger coiling. Instead I kind of pat the product all over my head, and scrunch away. Do's and don'ts of curly hair are helpful, don't get me wrong, but I really think it's all about finding what works best for YOU. If you're trying a method that is supposed to be a "do" and it's not working or you don't like the result, do it how you think looks best! As long as you're taking care of your hair's health, you do you boo boo!
I’ve always doubted my hair but Mell spoke to me “fine hair” “curls frizz apart easily” and “fall flat” 😭😭😭 I watch these videos on repeat and I’m getting close to the perfect hair day
Thanks so much Mell! After 40 years walking on this planet and hating my curly hair, you made me like and fall in love with my hair for the first time in my life. In this last 2 weeks since discovering your channel and following your tutorials,I can say that my hair looks bomb.com. And I realized that I wasted so much time and energy to straighten my hair, when in reality I had my pot of gold in top of my head. Ps...hi seester!!
these are the comments that keep me going. I am so happy that my seester and I have helped you in such little time. We would like to welcome you to the channel and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support ❤️
Honestly, your videos have helped me sooo much. I got in a car accident and broke the bones in my wrist on my dominant hand. I went from straightening my hair all the time to forced to have my natural curly hair down. And I say forced because I wasn’t even able to put my hair in a ponytail at the time. Thank you so much you’ve made me fall back in love with my curls!
I love your videos. No offense to the other youtubers but you're the first one that I find that isn't self absorbed annoying. You give the best tips not because you want the game but because you are so passionate about curly hair! You're doing a great job keep it up!
Thanks for the professional level info and your sense of humor. I'd love to see more on fine curls. So hard to balance frizz reduction, body, definition, and keeping your style intact for more than a minute when each strand is so delicate.
The joy Mell gets from the squish of her hair is on a whole other level. My heart is telling me that I need to find something that simple that gives me that much happiness.
Oh Mell! I love your DON’T!!! It is so FULL!!!! So “fluffy”! So GORGEOUS!!! I would love to see it twice as long, and even more fluffy! You are so beautiful, so pretty! You steal my eyes and my heart! Thank you for your video!!! 🙂
My 5 year old daughter and I love watching your videos!!! You are teaching me how to deal with my own hair (my mom did not know what to do with my curls) so I can start teaching my daughter how to deal with her curls and be proud of them. Thank you!!!
I'm not one to comment online but you are my savior!!! I've struggled with my curly hair since forever... Growing up I'd have my mom spend hours straightening my hair, and as a young adult I'd chemically straighten it. If this pandemic has had one silver lining it's been finally having the time to educate myself on how to treat my curls. My hair now looks absolutely gorgeous. Today I finally completed my routine with a gel and oil and I look like I've just had my hair done professionally. Thank you so so much for everything you do!!!!
You always give such great info and tips. I just started wearing my natural curls at the age of 53, so i have a ton to learn. Thank you for ur generosity and hard work in making all these wonderful videos available. 😊
Who knew all I had to do was use ✨more✨ product to make my curls pop?? I thought more would just weigh my hair down... 23 years into this life and I’m just figuring this out lol ugh... Shoutout to Mell for saving my curls 🥳🤩
You literally give good tips and it works so good on my hair. For sooo many years I was taught to put product in drenching wet hair which is why I would give up on my hair. I started wrenching just a bit of water out of my hair first and then applying product. Turns out it dries so much faster and looks better !?!? Thank you so much. ❤️
The tip on applying the amount that is the size of the hair is genius! It helped me SO much after this long with natural hair, I never heard that tip before! It has really helped me! Thank you!
My hair looks exactly like your not side so I clicked on your video right away and I just realized I’ve been doing 80% of those things 😭😭 I can’t wait to try out these techniques .
I wanted to say thank you. I have been struggling with what is the right amount of product in my hair but seeing you do the twist thingy was exactly what i needed. Awesome x
I would love to see a video with advice for people trying to embrace their curls for the first time. I haven’t worn my curly hair down since I was a little girl, I always just throw it up in a braid or bun. I don’t even know where to begin with my hair. I think my hair is like a 3A but I’m not totally sure.
This video gave me my best wavy day yet! Thank you for the specifics, such as twisting a lock of hair to judge if you’re using the right amount of product. So clever!
You’re the first curly girl with my hair texture AND curl type and your videos are life. I’ve been taming the mane for 30 years and I was today years old when I learned how to properly style my curls for a beautiful frizz-free look. You’re amazing - keep them coming! Thank you, gorgeous!
I'm a fan! I feel so grateful for found you on this youtube world of curly girl method girls that never really teach you. I find your content SO educational and saved me from the pressure and crazines of CGM. I'm so glad that I can learn, laugh and realize that I gotta have fun with my hair and listen to it. Thank you, Greetings from latin america.
Gah!!! I literally did everything on the don’t side this morning. Results are accurate 😐, I walked around with don’t hair today. Thanks so much for this amazing video!!! Fixing this stat.
Mell, I know this sounds crazy, but I like my soaking wet. When I hear the squish sound I know the leave-in is in the hair. I add the gel then squish my hair let it air dry I live in south Florida and its freaking hot so I take advantage of the heat. By the time I get to work by 10 am my hair is completely dry. I get great curls and this method works for me.
This is that one tutorial everyone transitioning should watch FIRST. I love all the routine vids here and by other people, but the truth is those are their routines. Even if someone's hair is similar to ours we need to figure out what amounts and types suit our very own hair. Thank you :)
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. I got my curly textured hair from my momma and I was never taught the right things to do with my hair. I felt pretty embarrassed growing up because I kept using a curling iron to control my frizz. It was seriously damaging my hair. Now I’ve discovered a few things here & their such as product, washing, and brushing. Then, I literally TH-camd styling curly hair & I discovered your channel. I’m so happy for getting all my questions answered & I’ll start doing your advice 😊😊 Thank you 🙏🏼
So happy to have discovered your page, I've changed my cream application and added gel too, and the end results were amazing!!✨ Had definition till day 5🙌🙌🙌 which would have been impossible before😰 So thank you very much💕
Mel, PLEASE 🙏🏽 PLEASE do a tutorial with UK curly products! 🇬🇧 ❤ And thank you so so much for your amazing videos, you've helped me transform from a frizz ball to a curly qween 👩🏽🦱 x Lots of love from the UK and please keep up the good work x
I had to rewatch. I actually thought I was doing fine! I am almost 5mths into my curly hair journey and after watching this... DEF my hair is looking better!💜
I like the more fluffy part with volume, I think volume is more sexy. The right side looks good too but looks more wet as if it was just with a lot of styling oil. Also pretty but more romantic/ normal and less sexy. I think all girls who want less friz and less volume more defined curls over time even without using anything they should use organic mic of oils more often and do oil masks like Italian girls do. just buy oils on amazon peach kernel sweet almon argan and jojoba oil and mix them in a big bottle and add (rose dracena oil for smell or maybe organic vanilla oil for smell- add only few drops to the base oils because these are much potent should not be used alone on skin or hair. Put the oil mix after shower on moist hair they will absorb over time just don’t put too much unless before bed as a pre morning wash mask .. And collagen and keratin masks could be nice as well...
She hasn't scrunched out the crunch or picked out & fluffed the right side yet. Once she does, it won't look hard or wet. It will be soft, defined and voluminous. Plus it will last for days.
I have learnt so much more from you in a few videos than i have watching loads of other peoples videos. I love that youactually explain why you need to do it as well. Which i find really helpful. Thankyou you are a great teacher.
I'm just starting my natural wavy hair journey and I'm having this exact dilemma of not knowing how much product to apply. Thanks for making this video! And thanks for making all the videos you have because I binged watched all of them and started my natural hair journey! I even just uploaded my own video showing my routine this week! So excited to continue watching your vids and learning more! 💕
I've JUST started embracing my curls. I'm so glad I found your videos. I was/am doing everything wrong. My hair looks like the left side today and now I understand why. At least, I learned how to diffuse my hair correctly thanks to your other video.
Love your videos. Not only informative but fun to watch. I began my curly hair journey 6 months after 40 years of trying to wear it straight). I began my journey with dyed, highlighted with bleach, a supposedly Botox treatment that was to remove frizz and not the curl, and not to forget I’m 99% grey (started getting gray at 14). The supposedly Botox treatment (the Botox was about a 1 1/2 yrs ago) stripped most of my haircolor - from light brown to a horrible light orange blond and left my hair with no curl. Then it began breaking at the ends. I decided not to do the big chop and cut 1/2 inch every couple of months. I began with hair almost halfway down my back. It’s now a couple of inches under my shoulders. I have thick, course, dry high porosity hair. After watching MANY curly hair videos, trying many products, going to a Miami Deva Curl Salon, two local curly hair salons, I finally found what works in South Florida weather (humidity in the 90s). To help the damage I did the Olaplex 1 and 2 treatment at home. I used the Hot Heads bonnet and a plastic cap underneath for the 20 minutes suggested. Bought the DevaCurl No Poo Original conditioning cleanser and One Conditioner original. I just use the cleanser on my roots and any runoff for the rest followed by the conditioner beginning from just below my roots and raking and squeezing in my hair. I rinse with the coolest water I can stand and leave a little on. NOW what worked for me is not squeeze the water for my hair with a regular towel just blot with a t-shirt. I comb my hair carefully and section my hair beginning at the bottom. I add water to make it almost soaking wet and then a quarter size amount of Biotera alcohol free defining gel and rake it through and then comb it through. I make sure I have enough in from roots to end to get a good slip and no frizzes and per on of Mel’s video I further section vertically to get more volume at the roots and finger coil. I continue sectioning around my head about 1 inch at a time and repeating. THE KEY IS TO HAVE THE HAIR ALMOST SOAKING WET BEFORE APPLYING A GENEROUS AMOUNT OF GEL. Love this gel. Never leaves it hard but keeps the curl defined. Once whole head is done I take a bit more gel with a some water on the palm of my hand and scrunch it on my ends and little bit more gel on the roots (these are the areas that ten to frizz). Now I do not touch again and let air dry until end are pretty much dry and diffuse with hot air on medium setting the roots only pointing from top down (another suggestion on one of Mel’s video). I do not put my head down facing the floor because I have vertigo. I do move it from the side to side while diffusing to get some volume at the roots and a couple of clips on the front roots for volume. I end up with shiny frizz free soft defined curls that last 4 days or more. I get lots of compliments. To keep the curls frizz free I sleep on a satin pillow case and put my hair gently up so only the bottom hair is on the pillowcase. That includes the sides. This gives you additional volume at the roots. Again I am barely touching my hair. Maybe gently splitting up some curls. I tried numerous times until I found out what was the correct amount of gel for me. Which is substantial. It’s trial and error. BTW I did us the DevaCurl gel soft hold and the stronger hold but I felt it made my hair dry. It has protein. I just needed moisture. I tried many leave ins for moisture, definition, etc. They didn’t work for me. I felt they coated the hair but did not give me moisture and my hair frizzed the next day. ONLY WATER GIVES MOISTURE. I now bought the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner which continue to help the damage and makes my hair soft right out of the shower and do the Olaplex treatment 1 and 2 every month. I do rinse out the Olaplex conditioner and apply the DevaCurl one conditioner original like stated previously. I know I wrote a lot but I hope it helps someone.
Love love love your videos! From going to a bun for years! Literally years! Because I could not style my hair due to all my frizz, to being able to have it down for days! 😭 your moisturizing tips and deep conditioning has helped so much! Thank you Mel and your sister Amanda for all of it! I (and my fiancée 😂) are forever grateful! No more lion’s mane for this girl! ❤️
I've been using too little product lately. I was trying to find out how little I could use, because my hair is fine, and wanted to see if I could get it less weighed down. Well, it's been a giant frizz ball, and still just as heavy as before! Turns out it wasn't weighed down; it's just a bit heavy. I used more product yesterday, and it turned out SO much better! Thanks for this video, it's exactly what I needed when I needed it! The measuring guideline is genius!
So happy I found your channel!!! I have recently been trying the curly girl method and been in general trying to understand my hair and the curls more. I have definitely been guilty of the scrunch and go and all I’m left with is crunchy wet looking hair all day. I picked up some new products based on your suggestions for what might help the curls and I cannot wait to try them out!! Thank you thank you!!!!!
You have helped my curls so much. I appreciate you Mel! My hair loves to suck up product! Seems to just drink it all in!!! Went to a new hairdresser recently and they were surprised by it too lol. It's like the case of the amazing vanishing products, especially by my curls that grow out of the crown of my head. I've learned to put product on, go to another section, come back and "feel" for it lol. Usually, I have to add more!
Oh lord, lovely Mel - you saved my whole hair life with this video. And no, I didn't apply enough product in the past. But I did it today like you in the video - and badaboom, I love the result so much! 😍😍😍
i am watching almost all your videos and i don’t even have curl hair!! You are so charming!! 10/30 Update: after watching so many of your tutorials, had to try some it, and guess what? Turns out I have wavy hair.. I am so surprised!
Her "don't" side looks better than my hair does most of the time!!!! hahahaha Do you have a video for curly girls with seborrheic dermatitis? I find that if I don't wash frequently, my scalp flares up quite badly but all the curly advice is to wash LESS often. I don't know what to do!!!!!
Tiffany Morris It’s quite alright to wash daily! You should use daily shampoos (like Not Your Mother’s and Shesmoisture products) 𝐎𝐫 co-washing (just using conditioner) but, i’m not sure if you HAVE to actually wash it with shampoo. if you don’t have to, then i rlly recommend co-washing😊 i have to wash daily because of my oily hair, so it’s difficult for me to not wash it😅
AS I AM Dry and itchy shampoo and co-wash was my saving grace i use the shampoo once a week to cleanse my hair and the co-wash twice a week so monday shampoo, wednesday co-wash and friday co-wash
@@Joe-ds5nk I have tried the AS I AM before-and everything else designed for itchy scalp. I actually just got diagnosed with psoriasis so it’s medicated shampoo all the way now. Boo.
You have helped me so much with my curls. This week was the first time in the 6 months I've been taking care of my hair that I was able to get 3 days out of my wash day. I'm loving all of your tips and tricks! Keep it up.
I’m such a curly girl slacker! 😂😂 I’m learning though. I recently found your channel and truly appreciate you sharing your wisdom. I have super course, thick wavy/curly hair and I can’t stand not washing my hair every day. So I’m watching for tips to help my daily washing. Thanks again for the help!
my younger sister has autism and has 3C-4A long blonde hair. my hair type is 2B-3A but i had a keratin treatment done so i don’t have to take care of it that much. 2 months ago i started the CG method on her hair and the curls are getting more stunning day by day, but i am still learning. your videos are really helping me to help her so thank you so much💕
i wanna help curly girls that are struggling too! even wavy girls! i went through hell and back after heat damage and my curls have came to lifeeee just by simple products and reducing heat. and mel you’ve helped style my hair better too.
OH! MY! LORDT!!! I have not been applying enough product! Is this why my day 3 + hair loses it's bounce and definition?? Should thicker hair consider using a heavier gel? Does that make a difference? Will you do a review with different size Denman brushes? Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! These videos are changing my life! I am finally able to embrace my curls and love the big!
Mell help! I have a question on hair fall, honestly how much is too much? I only finger through/comb once or twice a week on wash days, and seem to have a mess of hair coming out when I do. Should I be combing more? Is there a way to reduce hair fall?
thank god i found your channel, you’re saving my hair! i have really thick and really long (to my butt) 3a/3b hair but unfortunately since i have colored them they don’t curl up like they used to :( btw you’re so young but you have a lot of experience and i love the way you explain how we should treat our hair, it makes me think i’m talking with a friend (who knows everything about my curly hair😍). actually i wish i was your friend hahahaha
Girl, you need a new TH-cam name...Curly Hair Whisperer 🙌🏼 Every time my hair is not doing what it’s suppose to, you always lead me back to the truth: -don’t half a$$ your wash day and product application -make sure your hair isn’t dry or drenched when applying products Your hair advice is probably the only one that actually gives me big results!
That is me on the left. I am going to go through all of your tutorials and I am going to try them! Mine lacks moisture and definition. I can't wait to get it right. Thanks for sharing these tips x
Another great curly hair tutorial, Mel. I have the same hair type as yours. I was lazy today and got my hair to look like a nest. The birds were ready to swoop in on it 🤣
Your "bad" side still looks good, but the "good" side is great! The tip to guesstimate how much product to use looks really helpful. I have lower density and I'm not as curly, and never know how much to use. I either go too much or too little. Especially since the bleached strands of my hair are much drier than the non-bleached areas. Looking forward to my first appointment with you this weekend!
Well, you were right. You knew it but I'm here to confirm it again; you were right. I went into that shower, washed & conditioned my thick, coarse, high-porosity, wavy hair and put on three times more leave-in conditioner/styling cream (that LUS 3-in-1 which is too light for my hair and I won't buy again) than previously. It took some serious number of pumps because that little bottle doesn't put out much, but I digress. Then I grabbed the Curlsmith In Shower Style Fixer and just SQUEEZED, spreading it out thoroughly (even used a wide-toothed comb) over my very wet hair and then followed the usual routine. Ok, I also diffused a lot longer than I usually have patience for. But yeah, amost no frizz, and my loose waves rose up about an inch (my hair's cut into a lob so it was noticeable) into well-defined, curls and waves. I also realized that I need a new dryer, darn it.
Love your videos! Please show us your hair moisturizing routine (how often, which kind of products you use, how long we should wait with the product on our hair, etc). Thank you!
even the wrong side is still 10x better than my curls lol
same!
me too! I WISH my hair looked as good as the 'bad side'!!

Same girl!

Thank you for mentioning us wavies 😭 Please more advice for 2a, b, c hair! ❤️

You’re one of the few people I don’t get bored watching when I need information about my hair :((💕
Your bad side is a good side for me. I'm transitioning (4 months) and I'm still amazed I have big curly hair after years of thinking it was straight.
I don't know where you've been for my whole ass curly hair journey but you're a game changer
I’ve always doubted my hair but Mell spoke to me “fine hair” “curls frizz apart easily” and “fall flat” 😭😭😭 I watch these videos on repeat and I’m getting close to the perfect hair day

I had to rewatch. I actually thought I was doing fine! I am almost 5mths into my curly hair journey and after watching this... DEF my hair is looking better!💜
Whats the best way to maintain curly hair while working out & post workout???
I like the frizzy side the only thing is that theres two harsh layers n thats what looks wild...
I like the fluffier side better. It's really flowy and natural looking. But you have great looking hair regardless.
The "good" side lookd a little crispy to me
I'm just starting my natural wavy hair journey and I'm having this exact dilemma of not knowing how much product to apply. Thanks for making this video! And thanks for making all the videos you have because I binged watched all of them and started my natural hair journey! I even just uploaded my own video showing my routine this week! So excited to continue watching your vids and learning more! 💕
I added your video to my "today" playlist. 😊
best channel I've discovered this month for sure! I'm learning so much thank to your vids!
okay mel i like the “wrong” side bc volume and it looks so big 😍
I've been using too little product lately. I was trying to find out how little I could use, because my hair is fine, and wanted to see if I could get it less weighed down. Well, it's been a giant frizz ball, and still just as heavy as before! Turns out it wasn't weighed down; it's just a bit heavy. I used more product yesterday, and it turned out SO much better!
Thanks for this video, it's exactly what I needed when I needed it! The measuring guideline is genius!
Would love to see more videos on wavy hair.
Not enough product - and lazily applied in patches, has definitely been my biggest problem. So looking forward to wash day this evening now!
Love that density measurement for products
Bless you Mel omg! I’ve been using products in the wrong way all my life, thanks for sharing this🥰
Oh lord, lovely Mel - you saved my whole hair life with this video.
I am so surprised!
wow good for you!
I'm so glad to have received this tips! Thank u so much! I have got 2a/2b wavy hair e this made it super defined and soft! 😍😍
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!! ☺️ My hair has volume but is frizzy almost all the time. Now I don’t have to worry about smoothing the frizz down.
Tiffany Morris
It’s quite alright to wash daily! You should use daily shampoos (like Not Your Mother’s and Shesmoisture products)
𝐎𝐫 co-washing (just using conditioner)
but, i’m not sure if you HAVE to actually wash it with shampoo. if you don’t have to, then i rlly recommend co-washing😊
i have to wash daily because of my oily hair, so it’s difficult for me to not wash it😅
jjay Editz Thanks for the advice! I love Shea Moisture products! I also found a video by Mell about washing after watching this video! Yay!
Tiffany Morris That’s great!!
I’m learning though.
2 months ago i started the CG method on her hair and the curls are getting more stunning day by day, but i am still learning. your videos are really helping me to help her so thank you so much💕
Even your "bad" side looks good!😂 Thank you for this. I am always afraid I'm going to use too much product, and usually fall short.
This took me forever to get right! I’m so glad I can reference this video to people now! Onto watching the rest!
This is THE BEST instruction I’ve ever heard about curly hair application. Thank you!!
i wanna help curly girls that are struggling too! even wavy girls! i went through hell and back after heat damage and my curls have came to lifeeee just by simple products and reducing heat. and mel you’ve helped style my hair better too.
There’s literally no way I’m not subscribing I learned so much here 😳😳
Both sides are great, but I prefer the fuller side. So glad I found your channel great information.
You must have read my mind; this was exactly what I was asking myself yesterday.
OH! MY!
WE ARE CURL FRIENDS!!! Thanks for the support and love 😍
Manes by Mell thank you for your answer!❤️
I kinda Love the big and fluffy “wrong” side more 💁♀️😁
i don't even have curly hair, maybe 1b at most, i just love how knowledgeable and informative you are!
Your curly hair tips are life saving (and I love your personality) THANK YOU
Girl, you need a new TH-cam name...Curly Hair Whisperer 🙌🏼
Every time my hair is not doing what it’s suppose to, you always lead me back to the truth:
-don’t half a$$ your wash day and product application
-make sure your hair isn’t dry or drenched when applying products
Your hair advice is probably the only one that actually gives me big results!
Any fine, wavy hair tips or planned videos?
Looking forward to my first appointment with you this weekend!
...but I love the left side 😍. My hair usually looks like the right side, but I want it as voluminous as the left ugh.
I have the same feeling! I think I am more about the volume than about the definition.
Omg! Just found you these days on youtube and I love the way you present things related to wavy and curly hair. I love your sense of humor! Fantastic!
Thanks!
Even her "bad" Side looks better than my efforts. I'd be happy with the bad side
Love your videos! Please show us your hair moisturizing routine (how often, which kind of products you use, how long we should wait with the product on our hair, etc). Thank you!
