I like “Victorian Clutter”. It feels very lounge-y and comfortable to me. It’s giving smoking jacket, pipe, and leather slippers. It’s falling asleep with the newspaper on your chest and your feet on an ottoman and the dog at your side. “Victorian Clutter” is extremely cozy and both casual and formal at the same time.
My new home officially became mine at noon today!!! After 6 years of being cramped in a tiny house, I can’t wait to not only have room to breathe, but also to have room to decorate!
😊 i just decorated my whole new little 700 sq ft house in the Victorian Eastlake furniture from my Great, great aunt's house. All 1850 to 1895 ish. And I've been looking at William Morris (one of Eastlake's contemporaries) fabric to reupholster it. Avert your eyes Nick, lol. Love your channel.
I wish I knew someone like you 5 years ago when I gave away Victorian gothic side chairs and a throne chair. I also gave away 2 double decker fireplace mantles, one was Eastlake. GAVE THEM AWAY because no one wanted them, not even for firewood. Broke my heart. Now that stuff is trending again? Figures. 😢
Eastlake and Morris are excellent examples of their era. I can't agree with Nick that Buckingham Palace, or Windsor or Balmoral, have Victorian decor. It is often quite French and goes farther back. Victorian isn't bright, sweepingly huge rooms with sparse furnishing. We know that when Victoria died, her son who despised her taste had them renovated. We could even drag in the White House which also isn't "Victorian," or "Gilded Age" as would have been more accurate in America. There were of course people, like Franklin Roosevelt's horrible mother, who modeled their home decor on what a sad, little widow in Britain liked, crowded, dark, perpetually looking backwards, but most opened the curtains and let in the sun, whether or not it faded something. What I want to know is when are we getting French styles again? French Provincial or any of the Louis clan?
Sounds fabulous ❤. A few years ago I got my hands on an original Victorian buffet from the 1880's with beautifull carvings for 300 bucks. The seller had to go down so much to the point where she said "Not getting any lower I would rather gift that thing to friends who enjoy it". Then I found it on marketplace and didn't dare to haggle, because it's worth every penny. I love the victorian style, though I try to mix it with more turn-of-the-century and pre-war pieces and style elements. I get what Nick sais about the Victorian style it can be to much if it's giving to "royal" vibes. But I go more for the Victorian apothecary/mad scientist vibes than something to elitist lol. So victorian really needs to be spread out well in a space I think
My grandparent's house was 1950s high gloss pink and green walls. God bless my grandpa for his plastering skills and letting my grandma have her high gloss walls for all those decades. 🤣
"Do I need a swing at home?" Yes. I didn't know I did, but when the question was posed to me, I immediately had my answer. Though sadly, not the structural support beams.
I once saw an interior that was outside-in, with astroturf on the floor, a picnic table instead of a dinner table and a swing. Not sure I'd want to live there, but it looked cool!
I mostly agree with Nick's point of view, but THIS is what I absolutely disagree with. Haha! I'm renovating my 1910 home, and my main concern is how I'll attach the hanging armchair (that I'm going to DIY) to my ceiling without ruining the original ceiling painting I plan to restore, and where the beams are. 😂 I have some motor restlessness issues and swinging is one thing that keeps my nervous system calm. As a kid, I used to swing for hours and it kept me grounded. I sold my rocking chair a few years back and have regretted it since. Also I collect Moomin mugs and plan to display them in my kitchen. I have 80 of them.
There was a Hollywood celeb that had their house up for sale and they actually left the sex sling still hanging in their "playroom" in the MLS pictures.
Beachy/coastal decor likely looks very natural and authentic in your home given your location. A big thing with so many styles is authenticity. Beachy/coastal in Kansas wouldn’t work as well since Kansas is basically flat farmland as far as the eye can see. So modern farmhouse (without the signs preferably) would likely work well there as a style. Another example would be trying super modern decor in an old Victorian mansion or Victorian stuff in a glass cube house. The outside doesn’t match the inside in other words.
Oh.. I could absolutely have that swing in my sunroom or out on the porch. No problem. Having a snooze during a thunderstorm.. You just got to love that! Inside the house?... Mmmm.. probably not!
I grew up with traditional design and a love for antiques just like my mom. A lot of my family decorates that way, although a lot less formal and even as a kid I loved it and I thought the pictures and old movies depicting the decked out formal spaces were so beautiful. So, even though the Victorian style is naturally so formal (perhaps even stuffy) to me, it's so cozy and homey. I don't want to go super formal and feel like I'm stepping into a museum but when I get my own house it will lean traditional/victorian with elements of dark academia and British colonial in there too. I've had a deep love for history and science my entire life.
Yess, I feel the same. Maybe cause growing up my grandparents had antique furniture that I found very beautiful even for casual use as a family dining/breakfast table or a bedroom bookcase. I just moved into my own apartment and am loving the direction it’s going with my modern style college furniture (black, sleek curves) and the new Victorian/vintage items I’ve been gathering (rug, dining table, curtain rods, my china set on display, an art deco lamp, etc.) Who doesn’t want to live in a Sherlock Holmes-esque flat with their own personal touch? Maybe not Nick but I’m in love and can’t wait to have everything in order and start a puzzle on my dining table. Ultimate cozy vibes
I wonder how much that relates to how you felt in those spaces. The traditional homes I've been in were not comfortable or welcoming spaces for me because the people were not welcoming or comfortable.
I tend towards glossier finishes (not often high gloss though) because while I love design and aesthetics, I’m a utilitarian at heart so if it’s not practical (easy to clean), I don’t want it 🙅🏼♂️
Egg shell is my favourite. Cleanable, light reflective and hides wall imperfections. A mix of furniture is interesting. 20's, 40's and contemporary is eye pleasing.
Ok, Nick, you'd have a meltdown if you saw my living/dining space. I've married vintage Victorian furniture with vintage Danish Mid Century Modern furniture. It was a challenge, but works out because I don't have clutter or foo-foo embellishments in the decor. I still think you'd pass out, though 🤣🤣🤣
My christmas wish is that these videos get less apologetic. Seems the spoken disclaimers take up a good deal of content. At least when I’m binging them regularily because they’re great 😊
Me too, I totally agree. I am a grown up. I can take it !! DO NOT APOLOGIZE. If other "grown ups" don`t like your opinion, then they can move on. I don't always agree with NICK and so what! I Love his honesty and humor.
Cacophony to describe Grand Millennial style of multi patterns is so appropriate. One paint type that never gets mentioned but I like to use is semi gloss. I like bright rooms and I like the little bit of sheen that helps reflect the light., to me it also helps warm up a room.
There are these Victorian chairs at an art museum I once visited not too long ago, that you could go sit on to appreciate the surrounding artwork. OMW!! The most comfortable chairs ever! Even better than modern stuff. Wouldn't mind a couple of those in my house. You could easily fall asleep in them 😊
Maximalism is like hoarding. People accumulate too much stuff, and the excessive mixing of patterns becomes overwhelming. A home should be a relaxing and calming space, and in my opinion, a lot of mixed patterns don't contribute to that feeling.
@ we are all different, to you pattern mixing is overwhelming but to someone else it could be cozy/homey. I personally love it. There is a fine line though between maximalism and hoarding. A maximalist space needs to be curated and intentional
Now here's what I didn't expect - I was feeling anxious about something, and tired, and SO not in any kind of Christmas 'spirit,' but as I watched/listened, I suddenly noticed my anxiety had calmed and I felt better and just a little happier. Yay! Thanks Nick! 😄
2:15 "And like, people had fun and it was a good time. I didn't have fun. I had to look at it."🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣These comments are why I click on his videos. Absolute gold material.
I’ve gone Dark Academia (I’m actually an academic) but I’ve taken inspiration from the Victorian/Edwardian era but also industrial. I have got an anchor on the wall cause I’m obsessed with Ocean liners, in particular the Titanic. My place isn’t finished yet but I’ll share some pics on instagram when it’s done
Here in CO (and the SW in general?) it's popular to texture walls rather than worry about making them smooth - cuz it's kind of stucco? Maybe? I'm trying to picture the horror that would result from painting them in high gloss. 😂
I agree with most everything here. I'm not big on pattern either. I prefer wood, stone, velvet & leather & a few plants. However I do like some of the Victorian formal settings, just not all the stuff that goes along w/it. The best part here is the sarcastic truth. Thanks Nick!
The swing in house is actually a very south asian touch. I recall those being in all my grandparents homes. But yes those were different times and style of homes. But we have actually carried them into our modern homes too! Not gonna lie those were absolutely fun you can just sit on one read A book or gossip with others. These arent like swings that you are supposed to swing too high they are more like rockers in air. I dont think they fit in kidult unless the swing is in absolutely kids aesthetics 😅 I met a couple of folks in nyc who did kidult styles. All im said was bye and never looked back.
Kidult honestly seems like an extremely New York thing to do. I'm out here near Seattle, and idk why, but it just doesn't seem like much of a west coast thing to me. Southern California is a bit more trendy, but I feel like Washington is still in the more minimalism mixed with industrial phase. Most coffee shops these days seem so bright and sterile...
@nicoletim8095 you might be right! I've never seen kidult in portland, Chicago or most Midwest. But the again nyc folks are quicker in adopting trends then they trickle late towards other cities. There are nerds around here in Midwest but they have designated area or rooms to nerd out it rarely spills all over the home. Although in my experience folks with kidult homes seem to have a very peculiar personality thats so overwhelming 😅 makes me feel adulting isn't a skill everyone can do.
I agree. We live in the hot tropics (northern Australia) and our elevated house is quite darkish inside - built 50 years ago and has wide overhangs to help mitigate heat. We recently renovated our main bathroom and added on an ensuite and both bathrooms are glossy subway tiles, but only halfway up the walls so it didn’t look like a New York Subway Station lol. We chose gloss as they bounce the light around the room and make the room brighter. They look really great. Have to say I do love the matte subway tiles though. If our bathroom had more light we would have had them.
Today I think I figured out that I think the reason I enjoy multiple patterns and decorate my own home with them (I go for an English cottage vibe) is because I am neurodivergent and like for there always to be something interesting going on around me. My eyes are hunting for visual sensory input and I love surrounding myself with something interesting everywhere. I do keep my patterns all in the same few muted colors, though! So it's interesting everywhere but still soothing and cozy, not overwhelming.
Would love to make Nick tour a house in Michigan lol Everybody's got maps of the great lakes and paintings of freighters, maybe a vintage life preserver or anchor hanging on the wall. (we love you Nick)
Paint: Eggshell finish on walls, semi gloss trim and doors. Classic for a reason. If children's hand prints and crayons are a part of your life, yes then semi gloss would be a good option for your lifestyle. Nick is correct, high gloss paints show all surface imperfections, not to mention the paint application definitely requires an experienced painter!
Oh, Nick ; your funniest video yet!. My Christmas shopping fatigue melted away. If someone like you came by to give me an interior design evaluation, my husband would be so happy because I would have to develop a sense of humor about my decorating. All the best!
That trend was sometimes called Provencial or Provencale. After WWI and WWII in Europe and most rural areas in the US, people decorated and repaired with what they could find or had. That explains the mismatched textures, colors, prints, and patterns within the house and odd materials used outside in the yards and gardens, like old toilets (cleaned) for flower planters; and old tires cut and painted white with flowers around the mailbox). People became very creative and recycled everything! Also, primary colors are best used in a baby's nursery as they learn about color. When the child is older and learns about colors and art; then, change their bedroom colors to their favorites. My attic apartment is so mix and match that I call it Eclectic Granny. Nothing actually matches but it is comfortable! LOL!
Hey Nick, can you please do a video on how to make the perfect bed? Like the really luxe , billowy kind. I see them in photos, but don't know how to recreate. 🙏🏻
Yess, please. For some hotels I had the blessing to sleep in, I think it has to do with multiple Mattress Toppers and buying a cover one size too big. But it still hard to recreate!
Omg😂😂😂I ADORE YOU😂😂. You would BURST INTO FLAMES in my house. I am a maximalist, "themer". Every room in my house is themed and decorated with antiques and vintage. From Arizona/Texas old west to kitch 1900's soda fountain to farmhouse😂😂😂😂😂😂, and on to turn of the century circus and Americana. I would LOVE for you to see my house😂😂😂😂😂.
@AP12360 hoarding is just stuff stuffed and piled with no rhyme or reason, to the point of despair and filth. I have none of that. My home is curated. I'm a collector and a seller. Things are well kept, clean, and everything has a place. Your comment was just to be an azzhole. Good luck with that as your personality trait.
Can you imagine seeing one of those kitschy glossy dressers from the earlier 2000s and thinking “You know what would make this better? If my whole entire house mirrored this” Those walls are offensive.
My house came with an old, beige jacuzzi tub that sits in sort of a box frame which has wall paper on the side. One day I noticed a little corner coming off and so of course I had to grab it and peel it off. AAAHHHHHHH! It has the shiny black lacquer of the 80s underneath.
I’m waiting to move back into my little home but waiting for the tenant to move out. I love colour, florals, vintage and a feminine vibe. This year I have come to the realisation I like quality vintage pieces a middle point between the hoarding, cluttered, cheap, uncomfortable spaces I grew up with and the minimalist and modern that’s popular. I happy to invest in pieces that bring me joy and comfort. I’ve got a modern boucle bed and will get a boucle couch but that’s as modern and trendy as it comes for me. My home will be a warm, bright, airy, cottage, coastal, traditional and feminine space.
When I downsized from a large 5 bedroom home to my small 1400 sq foot ranch. I had to use what I had. That is to say my living room and dining room are more formal and fit the Victorian colonial. I get it reads more formal but it was very expensive when it was purchased. I’ve used the same three colors throughout the house to mesh the formal traditional furniture to make it look more cohesive Very little pattern mostly solid colors
Isn't what you describe more like nerd culture than kidult? D&D, comic books, superheroes vs. swings, doodles, etc. I don't mean to judge - since Nick is much better at it.
I think having a house that reflect your interests in media is different than a house decorated like a preschool 🤔 Kidult style looks like toddlers were doodling on the walls more instead of learning the rules from D&D 😅
Oh no Nick! You’re killing me dead by dissing on coastal themed rooms! I live in a coastal area so I have seen tons of terrible coastal decor but have to admit that my living room is coastal themed and I thought I was doing it better. I will have to send you some photos so you can make fun of it.
Miles Redd is a master of high-gloss lacquer in his design. I am always blown away by his “stuff”. Sadly…I couldn’t afford for him to pick out so much as a pillow for me!
11:38. I always have to chuckle every time you talk about themed rooms. My teenage son’s bedroom/bathroom is themed with video games and the ocean. He loves it and it is really really really a bit much. 😂. He has a HUGE wall mural aquarium on the wall and a shark mirror in the bathroom. The vanity is filled with seashells and rocks. 😂😂😂. Mix this with a do not disturb, I’m gaming sign and a an over sized Minecraft gaming chair. Plus his gaming computer and colored neon LED lights. Nick, you would probably lose your mind in his bedroom. And even though I do agree with you about the themed rooms and art with words, especially neon glowing ones. 😂. I still always think of my son’s room when you talk about it these topics and I laugh. 😂😂😂. Fortunately his room is in the basement, so really only my son, spends time in his room.
I grew up in an old Victorian. They don’t have to be over complicated. You can make it inviting . We only “Decked” out the Dining room for Holiday Dinners.
You would definitely hate my house. My style is so different form yours, but I still really enjoy your video's! I live in a 1910's home, and I'm working on bringing it back to that time period. Including all antique furniture and stuff. I love mixing patterns, and have a lot of antique chairs. I agree, the style is formal, but for me that doesn't mean I can't relax in it. I find it easiest to relax in a space that I find beautiful, so I'm completely relaxed in my sweatpants, with my feet up, on my antique but comfortable sofa, eating a bag of chips.
Used to honestly love patterned things, now idk wht happened? ..I outgrown them. Those patterns makes room feel so messy, not harmony & not somethin I would wnt to get home to. Just noticed changes of taste started after finishing school & started working, stress of work etc made me just wanna go home to something simple quiet harmony relaxing, not eye-popping, just something that can make me feel good & unwind. Which definitely explained when people were in covid, they were losing their minds with boredom, would mix pattern up. Now I get why kids love big bold bright patterns, cos it's exciting, alluring & you got nothing to do but live in fantasy all day, cue to the future, when you grow up, drive to work, wait in jam etc, workload, people, you just want peace, that's all
I don’t always agree but I LOVE how you express your opinion. Please keep your thoughts coming. P.S. Not a fan of the high gloss paint. I don’t want my walls to look like hard candy
I did a color drench with Le Lux in high gloss in my bathroom and laundry room. I works in there because they have textured walls. I did high gloss because they were small spaces with limited natural light. I like the reflective quality in there. I use the matte everywhere else, though. But it’s fun to use high gloss if you don’t have smooth walls. Dark gloss plays well with textures.
I want a modern take on British colonial. I like the light furniture, the richness, I do grow much of my food bananas, coffee, cocoa, and not much power except generator. So a time before power is also nice
I do like high gloss on trim- around a door where everyone’s hands are all over it. I love using the different sheens where I use color drenching. Love it!!!
Good advice re paint. I was trying to save $ by using a semi-gloss paint I had purchased years ago for trim, the wall of the bathroom I am renovating. The walls have a lot of imperfections from original paint prep/job and the flaws I missed when prepping during renovation are magnified. I won’t do that again. I like the sheen because it brightens the windowless room, but I need a more forgiving medium to paint with.

I've been decorating my home in the Orkcore style. The Orkcore look is dominated by red, grey, and brown. Brown leather and (natural or lightly stained)brown wood. Grey concrete, grey stone, grey iron, occasionally grey stained wood(I've found that Aged Barrel Mw283 is the best shade of wood stain for this). Red leather, sedona red stained wood, a bit of red trim, red painted roof. Dark ages war/hunting weapons as decorations. Hide rugs and Navajo rugs. Raw materials and recycled materials such as barnwood. Exposed industrial elements such as large bolts where practical. Pointiness added everywhere it can be done safely, such as pyramid tacks & pointy plants.
Thank you, Nick, for talking about the iridescent trend. I appreciate that you don’t love it, but I adore it!. I didn’t know about it, because I depend on you to introduce me to trends, thank you for that, and I am so excited to see the photos that you, actually Eden, included. It fired up my imagination for my next facelift project in, say, a bathroom. I am not necessarily a fan of coastal, but I do like sparkle and shine, if it’s placed right. Hate the high shine painted walls and ceilings. Way too much frenetic energy. I can’t imagine anyone feeling relaxed and serene in any of those rooms, impressively designed as they are. Love your video posts. Keep going. Merry Christmas from the Niagara Peninsula.
Lol, and have fun painting *over* high gloss paint - you’re gonna go through gallons of primer, otherwise your new paint will peel off in sheets because it has nothing to stick to! (My late husband learned *that* one the hard way … another thing he didn’t listen to me about.)
I think Kidult came from the late Gen X and Elder Millennial... we taught our kids that what you love is what you love and you should own it. We heard "you're too old for that" soooo often, whether it be things or for behavior, that we decided that we were, in fact, not. That has been shown in our clothing, our hair, our jobs and we have passed it down... it was a discarding of the idea that you're ever "too old for that" if it is not hurting anyone or anything. A place for everything, even your weird action figures and that weird affinity for primaries. 😁 High gloss... noooo... fingerprints, dust, scratches, nose prints, dead bugs, dust, grease, a sneeze... dust... everything shows up on anything glossy. This makes as much sense as putting clear acrylic bars on a crib... which they did. Tell me you don't live in your house without telling me. Yikes.
The satin finish pale blue curved ceiling in my living room is lovely. It is 25 years old and will be prepped and painted a very similar color and finish next summer.
I am wondering if a lot of these fun, bright and cluttered designs are a reaction to the sad everything beige designs that a lot of people were doing???
I am in the beginning stages of redecorating my apartment and hearing that Victorian is coming back? I am STOKED to see that type of stuff out there! Specially for picture frames and drapes. Like Give me cheaper options out there for that!
Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy them, and I appreciate your design logic. Not demeaning enough for true sarcasm; your brand of humour lightens my day.
We have high gloss trim throughout our house in the same off white as our flat walls and ceilings.Every couple of months I touch up the walls do to paw prints, animal noses, little kids hands and my husband's habit of leaning on the walls to put on/take off his shoes. One time my husband decided to touch up the flat walls but used the high gloss paint on spots throughout the house. It has been 10 years since he did it and I am still sanding glossy spots off the walls. You paint your walls high gloss you will have glossy walls until you die or move.
I had a high gloss room. Beautiful dark Farrow & Ball green. My biggest problem was that sometimes the paint actually peeled off the wall. Maybe it was a prep problem, sheetrock problem, etc. It was also a pain in the ass to apply.
Yeah... Not a big fan of high gloss paint but I did use it as a "backsplash" in the kitchen. It's easier to clean and not as busy as tiles can be. My kitchen is so tiny that tiles would make it feel too cluttered!
Vegas deploys high gloss walls...... because they're wipe-clean. If you want Louis Theroux to pay you an unexpected journalistic visit where he casually questions your life choices, you go right ahead with that gloss! 😂
I have been around long enough to remember when high gloss paint was ALWAYS painted on all doors and trim and occasionally on walls. I hated it then, and I can't believe it's back now as a color drenching technique. Blech! Your sarcasm reads so much like mine--you make me laugh out loud often. Thank you.
I have some eclectic "kidult" pieces in my home office, like pink bookshelves, a lamp that looks like a cat and a side table that looks like a robot, along with a whole gallery wall of geeky prints (all framed beautifully, of course) and then my living room is a classic mid century modern style with beautiful wood furniture. I like to think of it as business in the front, and a party in the back!
Kidult, no thank you, no time for that silliness. But, a swing sounds good for our 4 season porch to stare at the ever changing water. Which brings to mind Zellige tiles. I'm fascinated by them, they're so pretty but honestly, I'd probably get tired of them quickly. That pattern mixing went out (to me) when everyone got over The Prince of Chintz, Mario Buatta! Remember that nightmare?? Merry Christmas Nick!
Victorian design was dominated by the concept of Horror vacui or fear of empty spaces. They loved their clutter. It wasn't all bad but minimalism was not a thing.
I'm here for the sarcasm more than the design trends....although I do pick up design ideas.😆
THIS!! ^ ^ ^
😂😂😂 "A strip Club!" He cracks me up!❤😊
I too come for the snark , I pick up design Ideas but i have a way smaller budget
I love his sense of humor 😅
the kind of video that makes me grab a glass of wine and chill lol
Kidult feels like a reaction against the sad beige children’s decor
thats makes sense, kidults might have sad beige moms
@@lenina61😂😂😂 “sad, beige moms”
being kid in 90s i do share the horror of beige and sun yellowed wood cabinets in the kitchen
Kidult is the result of children being robbed of the innocence of authentic childhood.
I was thinking the SAME thing!
High gloss paint is like a tight fitting satin dress… it will show every single imperfection!
Great comparison!
Or satin leggings
Oh my goodness, all the lumps and bumps 😮
Best simile ever...I am absolutely stealing this!
100% best comparison!
Same here! Also, when he said to have a specific vibe to aim for, I thought "Victorian Eccentric" would be right up my alley.
Living in the UK in an older house with high ceilings, Victorian clutter works for me, but more of the Victorian, less of the clutter.
My new home officially became mine at noon today!!! After 6 years of being cramped in a tiny house, I can’t wait to not only have room to breathe, but also to have room to decorate!
Congratulations!! 🏡 😊
Congrats and enjoy !!
@@amazonhippie7826 Yay!!! Congratulations!! Hope you are really happy in your new home 🏡
How wonderful! Wishing you a beautiful life in your new home.❤
Congrats!
I don’t need to decorate again, I watch these just because I love Nick!!
William Morris fabric designs are great for accent pieces.
Figures. 😢
William Morris and Eastlake won't go out of style, but they could lighten up a bit.

So victorian really needs to be spread out well in a space I think
My grandparent's house was 1950s high gloss pink and green walls. God bless my grandpa for his plastering skills and letting my grandma have her high gloss walls for all those decades. 🤣
That's true love
Nick bringing up adult swings and telling *_us_* to get our minds out of the gutter lol 😅
I wasn't even thinking it until he said it 😂
"Do I need a swing at home?"
Yes.
Haha! Don’t eat soup while watching one of Nicks videos. Just trust me.
I agree he cracks me up 😂
don't drink anything either
You should have told me that before I started watching this video… I have a wall splattered with soup now! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I live on a tropical island and choise to incorporate as many natural elements as i can as decor . So big shells are important to this.
More Victorian cottage than Victorian mansion, yes? I like that style too.
Yess, I feel the same. Maybe cause growing up my grandparents had antique furniture that I found very beautiful even for casual use as a family dining/breakfast table or a bedroom bookcase.
I just moved into my own apartment and am loving the direction it’s going with my modern style college furniture (black, sleek curves) and the new Victorian/vintage items I’ve been gathering (rug, dining table, curtain rods, my china set on display, an art deco lamp, etc.)
Who doesn’t want to live in a Sherlock Holmes-esque flat with their own personal touch? Maybe not Nick but I’m in love and can’t wait to have everything in order and start a puzzle on my dining table. Ultimate cozy vibes
I wonder how much that relates to how you felt in those spaces. The traditional homes I've been in were not comfortable or welcoming spaces for me because the people were not welcoming or comfortable.
Why did I watch your video after having dental surgery? It hurts when I laugh and this one was so funny, it was painful. I lost it at "adult swing". 😂
@@pjperdue1293 This is hilarious! Although not for your jaws!
About the high gloss paint . . . I must say it's great for wiping off fingerprints and scuffs. I use it on my wood trim, not on the walls.
It looks good with $20M apartments!😂
I tend towards glossier finishes (not often high gloss though) because while I love design and aesthetics, I’m a utilitarian at heart so if it’s not practical (easy to clean), I don’t want it 🙅🏼♂️
I’m imagining high gloss paint on my 1970 textured walls, O my! I think I’ll leave them in flat paint.
Put the disclaimers at the front of the video, then go hard on the opinions! Give us the spiciness 🌶️
I feel like it's a good idea to have a distinction between "this is not for me" and "this is a design rule". But half of the video are disclaimers!
god damn it i sometimes forget if i'm watching an interior design video or a stand up set lmaoooo
Cacophony to describe Grand Millennial style of multi patterns is so appropriate. One paint type that never gets mentioned but I like to use is semi gloss. I like bright rooms and I like the little bit of sheen that helps reflect the light., to me it also helps warm up a room.
"I didn't have fun. I had to look at it." 😂💀
Called me out hardcore with Victorian clutter. It is stuffy but for some reason I like that. I like feeling like I’m in a cluttered antique booth.
There are these Victorian chairs at an art museum I once visited not too long ago, that you could go sit on to appreciate the surrounding artwork. OMW!! The most comfortable chairs ever! Even better than modern stuff. Wouldn't mind a couple of those in my house. You could easily fall asleep in them 😊
Me loving all the maximalist/pattern mixing photo😍
Maximalism is like hoarding. People accumulate too much stuff, and the excessive mixing of patterns becomes overwhelming. A home should be a relaxing and calming space, and in my opinion, a lot of mixed patterns don't contribute to that feeling.
@ we are all different, to you pattern mixing is overwhelming but to someone else it could be cozy/homey. I personally love it. There is a fine line though between maximalism and hoarding. A maximalist space needs to be curated and intentional
i actually love kidult style because it makes it easy for me to know when to stop talking to someone once i come over to their place.
😆😆😆
Well put 😆
😂😂😂👆👍❤
💀💀💀🤣🤣🤣
I wasn't expecting a video from Nick today and I'm so grateful to get one!
Now here's what I didn't expect - I was feeling anxious about something, and tired, and SO not in any kind of Christmas 'spirit,' but as I watched/listened, I suddenly noticed my anxiety had calmed and I felt better and just a little happier. Yay! Thanks Nick! 😄
I agree about high-gloss paint--it shows every lump and bump.
Giggling as I imagine the walls in my 80 year old house done in high gloss. Any imperfections will be so magnified!
Here in CO (and the SW in general?) it's popular to texture walls rather than worry about making them smooth - cuz it's kind of stucco? Maybe? I'm trying to picture the horror that would result from painting them in high gloss. 😂
One patterned piece, then you’re done, you can calm down.
I dont think they fit in kidult unless the swing is in absolutely kids aesthetics 😅
I met a couple of folks in nyc who did kidult styles.
High gloss paint on walls and ceilings is the interior decor equivalent of wearing satin. Let me show the world my cellulite.
Agree with you on every point. Contrary to popular trends, I do like glossy tile in a bathroom.
The word "kidult" always causes me to make a face like I'm smelling something nasty.
That high gloss, oh my. It looks great on a piano, but ... yeah, feels like a video game or something on the walls.
looks like strip club to me
Never heard of kidult, but it looks like fine nightmare fuel. So thanks for that :)
Would love to make Nick tour a house in Michigan lol
Everybody's got maps of the great lakes and paintings of freighters, maybe a vintage life preserver or anchor hanging on the wall.
Lol. Maybe such beds are best left in hotels. I can imagine making them up every day/changing sheets would get old.
In my opinion, maximalism = hoarding.
I want to see your house. 👍😀
@@AP12360 There’s a clear difference between, just sounds like you have a negative bias not allowing you to see it
Wouldn't it be great fun to come along with Nick as he designs his new home!!?😊
Can you imagine seeing one of those kitschy glossy dressers from the earlier 2000s and thinking “You know what would make this better? If my whole entire house mirrored this” Those walls are offensive.
My house came with an old, beige jacuzzi tub that sits in sort of a box frame which has wall paper on the side. One day I noticed a little corner coming off and so of course I had to grab it and peel it off. AAAHHHHHHH! It has the shiny black lacquer of the 80s underneath.
@@1DanielleLouise
LOL!
Quite a swinging theme today...lol. 😊
I'm notmally pretty on board with you, but since I describe my ideal style as 'a jewel box of a victorian witch's cottage', this one hurt.
LOL
Really enjoy the quips. 😊😊 Happy holidays!
When I downsized from a large 5 bedroom home to my small 1400 sq foot ranch. I had to use what I had. That is to say my living room and dining room are more formal and fit the Victorian colonial. I get it reads more formal but it was very expensive when it was purchased. I’ve used the same three colors throughout the house to mesh the formal traditional furniture to make it look more cohesive
Very little pattern mostly solid colors
Lol.. the high gloss room....looks like a nightclub during the day
Kidult. This describes my husband and me to a tea! Our dining room is filled with framed comic books, Old Tabletop RPG books, and action figures.
tee. it's to a tee
@ LoL I wasn’t sure! I always get my phrases mixed up. Thank you 😝
Isn't what you describe more like nerd culture than kidult? D&D, comic books, superheroes vs. swings, doodles, etc.
I don't mean to judge - since Nick is much better at it.
I think having a house that reflect your interests in media is different than a house decorated like a preschool 🤔 Kidult style looks like toddlers were doodling on the walls more instead of learning the rules from D&D 😅
I have a collection of 80 Moomin mugs and I plan to display them on my kitchen wall :D
It sounds so much fun!
Nick doesn't see it so I'm sure he's fine with your son's basement style.
I grew up in an old Victorian. They don’t have to be over complicated. You can make it inviting . We only “Decked” out the Dining room for Holiday Dinners.
Okay for 2025 I am doing a full gray, high gloss, lots of cheap fake chrome, glam house. Have I learnt well?
Don't forget the wavy squiggles!
Don’t forget your “love, laugh, live” sign! 😁
😂 😂 😂
Bahahahha 🤣. Use a barn door for one of your rooms and I think you have it all the highlights 😀
Don't forget to bedazzle the pillows.
Now I get why kids love big bold bright patterns, cos it's exciting, alluring & you got nothing to do but live in fantasy all day, cue to the future, when you grow up, drive to work, wait in jam etc, workload, people, you just want peace, that's all
"I didn't have fun. I had to look at it." Bwahahahahaaaaaa!
I don’t always agree but I LOVE how you express your opinion. Please keep your thoughts coming.
P.S. Not a fan of the high gloss paint. I don’t want my walls to look like hard candy
This was very chaotic. I loved every second of it 😂
I did a color drench with Le Lux in high gloss in my bathroom and laundry room.
I 100% agree with everything you said! I do like Victorian, but only if it isn't overdone.. maybe a few Victorian touches, but that's it.
I agree with all! The glossy walls are the worst!!
I am SO glad that I didn’t fast forward through the beginning commercial. 🤣 Nick , you make watching sponsor watching fun. 😊
Right? That was cool.
semi-gloss/gloss paint: years ago I did a glossy 2-tone golden yellow faux finish in my little bathroom and it made me so happy!
Hit 240k today. Appreciate you for all the knowledge and nuggets you had thrown my way over the last months. Started with 24k in September 2024..
I would really love to know how much work you did put in to get to this stage

I enjoy french country decore.
I love the fact than even if its stuff he dont like, he covers them really well XD!! Im def getting a swing hahhaah!!!
High gloss... noooo... fingerprints, dust, scratches, nose prints, dead bugs, dust, grease, a sneeze... dust... everything shows up on anything glossy.
And high gloss paint just looks like plastic. It doesn’t look high end, it looks like an unpainted plastic model house.
Thank you for your videos. I really enjoy them, and I appreciate your design logic. Not demeaning enough for true sarcasm; your brand of humour lightens my day.
"Who am I? Im Nick Lewis, im gonna say no!" 😂😂😂
When you said “that wasn’t clear, sorry, welcome to the channel“ I spit out my drink laughing. Not kidding. Spit. It. Out. F**k that was funny!
Will you consider doing more videos on color? How to use it throughout rooms? How NOT to be matchy - matchy. Thanks.
“Get your mind out of the gutter people!” : I did not expect something like that on a interior decoration channel.
So is Victorian clutter appropriate in a Victorian home in England? Because there are a LOT of Victorian homes in the UK...
Thank you.
lol the pics for the first couple sections are all the things I save on pinterest
But Nick! Us quilters mix patterns ALL THE TIME and the result is (usually) gorgeous!
If you do high gloss walls you will have to sand it off before changing it later.
Victorian design was dominated by the concept of Horror vacui or fear of empty spaces. They loved their clutter. It wasn't all bad but minimalism was not a thing.
They also took care to cover those overtly sexy table legs.
Whoa, baby! 😂
