Yeah, they said it wasnt the first time, he had 2 previous incidents. Most cops get away with DUIs because other cops let them off + the law is already too lenient on drunk drivers. This is def not the first time he has been drinking and driving... you dont get THAT hammered and suddenly decide to drive drunk for the first time.
For reference, being at 0.3 blood alcohol level, most people would be blacking out, throwing up & could completely lose consciousness. 0.4% or 0.5% and above, youll have blood poisoning & could die. This guy was driving at 0.28!!
The fact he didnt go to prison for at least a year and lose his job in the police force entirely, is very disappointing. He obviously has a drinking problem and needs rehab and therapy, I hope he got the help, alcoholism and addiction in general is always sad to see, its terrible to see someone throw their life away like that but its not an excuse and there needs to be some accountability. Do these people even care about their community? FFS. He couldve killed someone!

There is a long history of cops being denied advancement, given the worst jobs/shifts, and generally shunned by their fellow officers for turning in other bad cops. I hope none of that happened to this officer. If anything, cops should be held to a higher standard than the general public.

The 'we pay your salaries' argument is so overused, as if it gives anyone any real power. Everyone pays everyone's salaries, that's how living in a society works. The customers of my business pay for my services which in turn go to my salary, and yet that doesn't make me their slave. They pay for a particular service, a mutual contract. It doesn't grant them the power to act like an ass to me.
Most businesses and institutions are going to protect their workers before their customers. There's a better relationship there and frankly employees are more valuable. Both are needed, but workers take much more money, time and effort to replace. As such they tend to get the benefit of the doubt. The exception being where severe or continued misconduct is taking place, at which point the employee is terminated.
When severe or continuous misconduct occurs, officers should be fired. Unfortunately that doesn't happen as much as it should. But people are very quick to throw around this 'we pay you' argument like the police are somehow in the taxpayer's debt. They're not, it's a mutual service. They are paid to provide a service.

Their salaries come directly from our taxes, they work for us, and if they screw up and have to compensate a family because of an officer's negligence, it is US who also pay the compensation for the victim. So, we should be able to choose if we want an official with bad behaviour fired. Is funny that some people defend this, but don't we choose politicians and the president? Yes, because they work for us, and we pay their salaries, and if we don't want them there anymore we vote someone else.

If he had an otherwise good work record, he was probably offered alcohol treatment and a non sworn position to get him over the number of required years for retirement. Most civil service systems have certain "protections" in place. It is true that a police officer is held to a higher standard when it comes to public trust. But, just because he's a cop, he's not subject to being summarily terminated for something where the common person wouldn't lose their job. His new job is most likely a significant demotion in both stature and benefits but a DUI isn't really a "lose everything" offense. Does a janitor at the local tire factory lose everything for a DUI? Sorry, but that's just not true. Most employers are not going to go after an employee for a DUI if they are, by all other standards, a good employee. The only reason for a company to fire someone for a DUI is because there were some serious aggravating factors. A DUI all by itself typically doesn't have nexus with the person's job. However, if the guy had use of a company vehicle, got into a serious accident, the vehicle had the company logo, and/or the local news picked it up, now he might be jammed up.

    • @BobNietzsche

Hell, one of the biggest CYA recommendations for years has been to safeguard your social media from being accessed by employers so that they can't find reason to terminate. Still being conscious and driving (erratically to be sure) with a 0.28 BAC is evidence that this ex-Lieutenant has built up a tolerance to alcohol and is very likely an alcoholic of long standing. His roadside behavior is very much in keeping with the mental state of addiction. I have zero sympathy with the consequences of his actions. I do hope he sought help and has successfully achieved permanent sobriety.

ANY cop that thinks he is above the law should ALSO be investigated for other corruption! Public servants should face 10x's the penalty of a civilian!

I get your angry but this man wasn't using his police powers to commit the crime he committed it as a civilian and in his drunkenness was convinced he should be let go cause he's a cop. Cops should be treated the same way normal people are but they get preference. That's the unjust thing to me. Its different when they use their police powers illegally.
