Last month, Macron caused quite a stir when he suggested deploying Western troops against Russia. But, this seems to be quite a shift in how Macron sees the war in Ukraine, so in this video, we take a look at Macron's Ukraine strategy, how it's changed over time, and what explains this shift.

Describing him as anti NATO is rather strange. He made a comment about its cerebral death not because he didn't adhere to the idea, but because a member of the alliance (Turkey) was directly threatening another member (Greece) and the US was not giving a shit about it.
It's pretty clear when he meant brain dead he meant American leadership.
and also a member of NATO(The US) was supporting the seperatist in another member country(Turkey).
France always had the position of staying independant from NATO, since back to De Gaulle.

Macron blocked Turkey's offer to provide 155mm artillery shells to NATO (to assist Ukraine). He does not care about NATO. He only cares for French hegemony.
The indirect confrontation that Russia and France have had in Africa might have played a role too in this attitude change..

Exactly. France, who was plundering Africa, lost a LOT of money (Billions) when Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger kicked the French out and made friends with Russia. The French leadership are not doing this out of heroism.
I want to clarify that I doubt macron was ever pro Russia, but he was trying to keep dialogue open and try to achieve peace. It’s a huge difference and I fear that talking about being “pro” Russia is a very misleading statement
Well, yeah. But the issue of Russia gaining or exerting more influence in Africa just led to Macron having none of it.
He's been playing his part all along - that's all. The West is called the collective West for a reason. Everyone has a part to play (in the US's production).

This kind of switch is actually quite typical for Macron. He will be exceedingly diplomatic and patient, until options are exhausted, then he turns very resolute. He was the same way with Hungary and Orban. He was very patient and then he abruptly switched to focus on the possibility of suspending Hungary's EU voting rights.
Publicly, these switches seem abrupt but do not come out of the blue. They come after Macron has been patient for a long time and they are present throughout his career. One should not write this switch off as something whimsical, on the contrary. Based on previous switches, he is very likely dead serious and most politicians will know this about him.
Probably better in the long run, to try and resolve things diplomatically before trying to strong arm people. In any case, I hope he is serious

The difference is Putins Hubris has killed hundreds of thousands, hit the world economy and set back his country by at least 10 years. That's quite an achievement.
I don't think Macron ever intended to truly send any troops there in Ukraine, but his move was actually really clever. The war in ukraine was starting to get behind in the news, as the topic switched to Ghazza and other issues. But ever since his shock announcement, everyone is talking about Ukraine in Europe again, and everyone is realizing that Ukraine might be on the losing foot rn and needs help, and that we might not be able to count on USA to support them.
It was great PR: creating some sort of "strategic ambiguity" and putting the topic on the table

And yeah you aren't going to get support from us Americans if Europe keeps talking about Western troops in Ukraine. We said in the beginning there would never be Western troops in Ukraine, that it was Russian propaganda to say so. If we go back on that promise, we are telling the world we are untrustworthy and we are the problem in the Ukraine war and Russia is right to fear NATO. I'm not interested in proving the Russian narrative. Macron needs to shut up and send more weapons to Ukraine, they are at the bottom of the list of Ukraine contributors.

@@somethinglikethat2176he was actually asked by Zelenskyy himself to talk to putler. Watch that documentary about Macron, it has the call between him and Zelenskyy on the day of the invasion. Macron even looks very skeptical about whether that would work and asks Zelenskyy if he's ready to sit at a table with putler and talk. To which Zelenskyy answers "of course, we have to".
Zelenskyy also asked other politicians to talk to putler early on, eg. my own chancellor, Mr. Nehammer of Austria was one of the very first politicians to visit Kyiv after the invasion (I think only the Baltic leaders went there before him) and he went straight on to Moscow after. Which was clearly due to Zelenskyy asking for it. We're a tiny country that has no influence on the world's superpowers. Nehammer wouldn't have done that on his own out of some grandiose ideas about the "might of Austria".
But we're neutral, so our chancellor is a good choice to send to the enemy trying to get negotiations going.
Zelenskyy changed his mind about trying to talk with putler after Bucha. If you look at all the old interviews, it's very obvious. Because after that, how could you even talk? Ukrainians would have kicked Zelenskyy out of office if he had tried.

Something you kind of miss is that most of the military equipment sent to Ukraine by France is not disclosed publicaly, so we have no idea of the french contribution.
Very little French equipment on Oryx and recent claims of the amount of aid by the French government suggest its rather pathetic. Not Kiel Institute pathetic but 20-25% of Germanys aid pathetic.

Although I do believe that we should deliver much more, including the Taurus system and way more ammunition, I don't think it would be a good idea for Nato countries to send soldiers. I don't buy into that nuclear war rhetoric as that would assure Russias destruction as well. At the end of the day nuclear weapons are quite impotent at the end of the day. But I do believe that direct involvement of Nato will spiral things way more and possibly drag in other countries currently not involved.

What was so striking to me was how many media outlets just went from Macron's statement of "not ruling out anything" (in general terms) to full blown French-Troops driving in an blowing stuff up. Nothing like that was said by him if you watch the original, but hey escalating and overblown headlines still rule and even other higher ranking officals fell for these overblown reports as well.
Yep, the man even made the assembly take a vote, just to see exactly who is in putin pocket ^^. Unsurprisingly, the far right abstain (the cowards in the speech just before) and most of the far left opposed more help for Ukraine (don't remeber if it was the fools or the blinds in the speech ^^). Even entertaining the idea of France joining the war in some regard means Russia has to change its strategy. Plus hearing the new France's stand on the war could make other nations more open to supporting Ukraine with bigger aid packages. Macron wanted an EU army to guard against American Isolationism. This actually explains his stance remarkably consistantly. By going boots on the ground in Ukraine together with Poland, he gets a lot of leverage towards a joined military force with the countries in east europe that want it the most.
If he actually goes through with it. He has to convince Poland to join him and then ignore the many NATO countries that are against direct intervention. Then there is the issue that if he does that France will pay the lion's share of the cost. As they said in the video this is where France's actions do not match their words.
Seeking strategic autonomy is being pro Europe not being anti nato' strategic autonomy and NATO are perfectly compatible as Europe and US interests are mostly the same.
Being able to admit when he was wrong and change direction is so commendable and a sign of strength of character. You will never see Putin or any of the politicians favoured by his fan boys do that.

There's nothing commendable about Macron.
Putin is pretty clear and firm about what he wants to do. Boot NATO out of as much former Soviet nations as possible. Macron flip flops because he hardly knows what he wants. And he’s a coward, who barely cares about the native, french people and cares more about wasting time and money on the Ukraine war.
He's not Anti Nato, as much as Pro-EU sovereignty.

On the topic of France aid, until very recently, any aid sent was entirely classified. Another issue is that while Europe uses the same weapon platforms, France has it's own...
France cannot give to much équipements as French army has skills that they need to keep and cannot loose like Germany who is not ready for a future war or opération.

And not to mention the aerial variant and the 152 prestategic strike missiles (20 hiroshima per missile).
The French missiles are mirved and truly operational and all the tests of modernization were a success.
And it costs France 8 billion euros per year.
It should be remembered that "strategic ambiguity" is at the heart of much of French defence posture.

I hate when they use GDP % to Aid sent because they make it seem like a country sent less than other countries but in reality they sent more.
It's disingenious to say the least, never before has it been a metric, but as it happens to make the US, the UK and some Baltic states look good they can't stop yammering about it.
Note how that metric also leaves the EU out, which as an entity has given about 60% of what the US contrives Ukraine aid, and that contribution, proportionally higher now that the GOP is blocking a new bill. It should be understood that Germany and France are net contributors to the EU, and their seemingly low contributions are on top of that.

Honestly, I always assumed it had to do with the fact that he's the loudest voice for a European Army, or a European focuses alliance in a world without America.
The Ukraine War is probably the best example of why an European focused collective military might be important.

France is always been moody about US influence I’m just glad they finally realized Russia is an unserious negotiator and purely self interested nation.
France is moody because
(A) general culture distrust of the Anglo sphere.
(B)A drive for France to be player in world affair.
They've never liked the Western world being dominated by the US since WW2 ended, and always try to pass themselves off as an equally worthy alternative. However this generally has been met with mixed results. Like pushing for the EU so France can be the lynch pin, only to be soundly outdone by Germany.

To be fair to France, they might be right about the US, especially if Trump wins power.
Honestly, Macron is right, who best to look after European interest then ourselves? After all, some countries are blinded in thinking the US cares about our interest, but when you look closely, many of those countries come across as weak that do as they are told by the US, regardless of if it's in there interest or not.
So basically, Europeans in the US should be allies of the US but not dependent on them, especially as the US is becoming more erratic, polarised and less caring about the world.
The irony is, how Germany and France got it wrong on Russia, many in other European countries could get it wrong on the US if Trump wins power, the end result is, we in the EU need to pool our resources together so we can look after our own interest, regardless of what the US or others say.

I'm french and I fully oppose Macron, except in the case of the Ukraine-Russia war. I do not understand why people hate his stances. I, for one, fully agreed with his approach to the war. Basically he tried to appease the conflict with diplomacy at first, and once he realized it wasn't going to work, he made sure Putin knew he wouldn't back down either from supporting Ukraine.

Just in terms of the 80s the statement of Macron "We Europe, NATO should stop Russia before Kiev and thereby save Europe and our credibility" sounds like the voice from the institution which I prefer not to name...Mitterrand, Helmut Kohl, Thatcher and other leaders of the 80s etc. if they heard this their jaws would have dropped. The only person who would possibly agree is famous leader of Germany of 1933-1945. He might have said something like that in 1943 after Stalingrad. May be Europe and NATO has been wrong about something?
I think history will look back at Macron as a strong leader, he has his flaws but you can't say that he isn't persistent and guided in his ultimate view of a European identity and sovereignty.

Strategic ambiguity is a genuinely good idea and I think that more EU nations (and UK) should adopt this stance. Even if France has no actual intention of deploying troops to Ukraine, merely threatening to do so already forces Russia to reconsider it's strategic and diplomatic options with the mere possibility of such a move in mind.
Keeping the enemy guessing is extremely useful for Ukraine, and I think that others should emulate France in simply not letting the world know what their intentions are surrounding Ukraine.

When you get a chance look into what is going on in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali and how they've distanced themselves from French influences and how much France actually depends on the Africa for resources.

Macron was correct in his earlier assessments about Russia's place within the European history and despite his many flaws showed strong, cautious leadership while trying to negotiate with Putin and showing him that there was a way out of this mess. He has finally realised that Putin isn't a regular leader and can't be negotiated with which is why his stance changed. I absolutely agree that supporting Ukraine should be one of our top priorities right now because it is the only way to ensure a more peaceful Europe of tomorrow and that includes Russia. As long as Putin and his cronies are allowed to sit there executing their imperialist ambitions, none of us are safe and that includes their country's future which is currently headed towards a very dark path of Ruscism hell. I'm glad Macron changed his stance on this conflict, better late than never.

This is a big move ! French army isn't big enough to defeat russia in a conventional fight but can buy time for other countries to reinforce Ukraine. And Putin knows that the french nuclear submarines have hundreds of megatons of diplomacy aiming his head and Macron doesn't need the permission of the USA to press the button.
Macron cannot even establish security on his own French territory. Police and the army cannot enter the heated suburbs in France itself. How do you expect Putin to take him seriously?

You know what I think. I have seen this before and it is usually the person who has the most resolve to see a victory, who is the one who is more open to going to the perpetrator and asking them to negotiate, or cease hostilities. That is why Macron was not the least bit concerned about his many phone calls and trips to Russia to talk to Putler. I believe in the back of his mind he knew that if this did not go well, he would be ready to fight. That would be my way of handling it. Without giving Putler an ultimatum right from the start, but choosing to talk, he already had his mind made up. "Get out of Ukraine or you will be fighting us as well."

Problem is France is all talk and no action. They have contributed least in military aid to Ukraine out of the major countries.
It should be noted that Zelenskyy specifically asked Macron to call Putin to de-escalate when then Feb. invasion began.
As a Swede, I like the french. I know that Macron is not that popular in France, but I like his foreign policy. We need the great powers of Europe to take leader roles, and France has done well in that regard in the abscence of Britain in the EU and German's neglect of war. I don't agree fully with NATO troops, but we definetly need a more aggressive tone in Europe, aswell less dependence on the US.
France is far away from the front, but I respect that they still see the desperate situation of the matter. I would like for Britain to Join the EU so that we could get the classic Anglo-french alliance back into the Euro-sphere.
As a french, I appreciate. As far as I dislike our president and despise his interior policy, I'm pretty happy about his foreign one, and agree with you about europe and NATO. No one here wants war, but if war was to happen, I believe most of us will do what needs to be done and be able to put aside our internal fights for a while.

I think Britain rejoining the EU is a stretch at present but in the absence of the US some form of reconciliation with the rest of the continent will increasingly become the only reasonable option open to us, at least if we want any worthwhile security guarantees later down the line. Hopefully we'll have gotten over our little tantrum a decade ago by then.
Britain is already doing as much as any other country in the EU as it is. They donlt need to join the EU again. We don;t like them. We don;t like Russia , we are happy Britain is no longer in the EU, and want Hungary out of the EU too. If you cant get with the EU program , get out!

While the idea of looking at how much of their GDP each country gave in support, it's worth keeping in mind the actual worth of the support as well, since we all know the GDP of one country will vastly outweigh the GDP of another. As much as I love the idea that my country is among the top rankers based on the % of GDP support given to Ukraine, I would not say that we are helping more than countries ranking much farther down the list or expect that they necessarily can do more immediately.

As a Jerseyman and having had the French fishermen block our port a couple of years ago to bully us into issuing them fishing licenses for our waters, i have no love for the French and I support Russia.
Also Jersey once had Russian troops here defending us against the French and the only times we have ever had French troops here is on the multiple occasions that they tried invade us.
